Abstract
This study investigated the modification of polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes with TiO2 and Fe2O3-TiO2 nanoparticles to enhance their hydrophilicity and biofouling resistance against the marine microalgae Chlorella vulgaris. It is a common freshwater and marine microalga that readily forms biofilms on membrane surfaces, leading to significant flux decline and increased operational costs in ultrafiltration processes. The microalgae cells and their extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) adhere to the membrane surface, creating a dense fouling layer that impedes water permeation. The modified membranes were characterized using contact angle measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and pure water flux/resistance tests. Short-term ultrafiltration experiments evaluated the membranes' antifouling performance by measuring flux decline, flux recovery ratio, and relative flux reduction during C. vulgaris filtration. The TiO2 membrane showed improved hydrophilicity and antifouling over the pristine PES membrane, while the Fe2O3-TiO2 nanocomposite membrane exhibited the best performance. It reduced the water contact angle and showed only a 5% relative flux reduction compared to 60% for the pristine membrane. SEM images confirmed reduced microalgal deposition on the nanocomposite surface. Long-term tests with microalgal cells under dark and visible light conditions in saline water further assessed the membranes' biofouling resistance. The Fe2O3-TiO2 membrane maintained 59 L/m2 h water flux under visible light after immersion in the microalgal solution, outperforming the pristine (38 L/m2 h) and TiO2 (52 L/m2 h) membranes. This superior antifouling was attributed to photocatalytic generation of reactive oxygen species inhibiting microalgal adhesion. This study demonstrates a promising strategy for mitigating biofouling in membrane-based water treatment and desalination processes.

Abstract
In this study, the dual strategy of 1-butyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide ionic liquid (IL) grafting and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanocomposition was applied to modify poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based membranes. The highly hydrophilic/oleophobic and fouling-resistant PVDF-g-IL/CNTs membranes with excellent separation efficiency were obtained by the nonsolvent-induced phase separation method with ethanol-water mixed solution as the coagulation bath. The grafted IL not only generated hydrophilic groups on PVDF chains but also acted together with the CNTs to induce the formation of hydrophilic β-crystalline phase of PVDF, which significantly improved the hydrophilicity and pore structure of the modified PVDF membranes. As a result, the pure water flux of the optimal membrane increased up to 294.2 L m-2 h-1, which was 5.2 times greater than that of the pure PVDF membrane. Simultaneously, the electrostatic interaction of the positive IL and the integration of CNTs enhanced adsorption sites of the membranes, producing exceptional retention and adsorption of dye wastewater and oil-water emulsion. This study presents a straightforward and efficient approach for fabricating PVDF separation membranes, which have potential applications in the purification of various polluted wastewater.

Effectiveness of different CuO morphologies nanomaterials on the permeability, antifouling, and mechanical properties of PVDF/PVP/CuO ultrafiltration membrane for water treatment. Abstract
The hydrophobic nature of Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is a significant barrier to use in ultrafiltration, resulting in fouling, flux decline, and reduced lifespan in water treatment. This study examines the effectiveness of different morphologies of CuO nanomaterials (NMs) (spherical, rod, plate, and flower), synthesized by the facile hydrothermal method, to modify PVDF membrane with PVP additive for improving the performance of water permeability and antifouling. Such membrane configurations with different morphologies of CuO NMs improved hydrophilicity with a maximum water flux of 222-263 L m-2h-1 compared to 195 L m-2h-1 for the bare membrane and exhibited excellent thermal and mechanical strengths. The characterization results exhibited that plate-like CuO NMs were dispersed uniformly in the membrane matrix, and their incorporation as a composite improved the membrane properties. From the antifouling test with the bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution, the membrane with plate-like CuO NMs had the highest flux recovery ratio (FRR) (∼91%) and the lowest irreversible fouling ratio (∼10%). The antifouling enhancement was due to less interaction between modified membranes and foulant. Further, the nanocomposite membrane showed excellent stability and negligible Cu2+ ion leaching. Overall, our findings provide a new strategy for developing inorganic nanocomposite PVDF membranes for water treatment.

Abstract
Membrane separation processes are promising methods for wastewater treatment. Membrane fouling limits their wider use; however, this may be mitigated using photocatalytic composite materials for membrane preparation. This study aimed to investigate photocatalytic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based nanocomposite membranes for treating model dairy wastewater containing bovine serum albumin (BSA). Membranes were fabricated via physical coating (with TiO2, and/or carbon nanotubes, and/or BiVO4) and blending (with TiO2). Another objective of this study was to compare membranes of identical compositions fabricated using different techniques, and to examine how various TiO2 concentrations affect the antifouling and cleaning performances of the blended membranes. Filtration experiments were performed using a dead-end cell. Filtration resistances, BSA rejection, and photocatalytic cleanability (characterized by flux recovery ratio (FRR)) were measured. The surface characteristics (SEM, EDX), roughness (measured by atomic force microscopy, AFM), wettability (contact angle measurements), and zeta potential of the membranes were also examined. Coated PVDF membranes showed higher hydrophilicity than the pristine PVDF membrane, as evidenced by a decreased contact angle, but the higher hydrophilicity did not result in higher fluxes, unlike the case of blended membranes. The increased surface roughness resulted in increased reversible fouling, but decreased BSA retention. Furthermore, the TiO2-coated membranes had a better flux recovery ratio (FRR, 97%) than the TiO2-blended membranes (35%). However, the TiO2-coated membrane had larger total filtration resistances and a lower water flux than the commercial pristine PVDF membrane and TiO2-blended membrane, which may be due to pore blockage or an additional coating layer formed by the nanoparticles. The BSA rejection of the TiO2-coated membrane was lower than that of the commercial pristine PVDF membrane. In contrast, the TiO2-blended membranes showed lower resistance than the pristine PVDF membrane, and exhibited better antifouling performance, superior flux, and comparable BSA rejection. Increasing the TiO2 content of the TiO2-blended membranes (from 1 to 2.5%) resulted in increased antifouling and comparable BSA rejection (more than 95%). However, the effect of TiO2 concentration on flux recovery was negligible.

Application of BiVO4/TiO2/CNT Composite Photocatalysts for Membrane Fouling Control and Photocatalytic Membrane Regeneration during Dairy Wastewater Treatment. Catalysts 2023. Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the performance of composite photocatalytic membranes fabricated by incorporating multiple nanoparticles (TiO2, carbon nanotubes, BiVO4) into polyvinylidene fluoride membrane material for real dairy wastewater treatment. The composite photocatalytic membranes exhibited superior antifouling behavior, lower filtration resistance, better flux, and higher flux recovery ratio than the pristine membrane. Salinity, pH, and lactose concentration are determinant factors that affect filtration resistance and rejection performance during the ultrafiltration of dairy wastewater. Generally, higher irreversible and total resistances and slightly lower chemical oxygen demand (COD) rejections were found at higher salinity (expressed by electric conductivity values of >4 mS/cm) than lower salinity (<4 mS/cm) levels. The presence of lactose in dairy wastewater increased irreversible resistance and severely reduced COD rejection during ultrafiltration due to the ability of lactose to pass through the membranes. It was ascertained that membranes require further treatment after filtrating such wastewater. Lower resistances and slightly better COD rejections were observed at pH 7.5 and pH 9.5 compared to those observed at pH 4. Photocatalytic membranes fouled during the ultrafiltration of real dairy wastewater were regenerated by visible light irradiation. The membrane containing all constituents (i.e., TiO2, carbon nanotubes, and BiVO4) showed the best regeneration performance, exceeding that of the pristine membrane by 30%.

Abstract
Membrane technology is an essential tool for water treatment and biomedical applications. Despite their extensive use in these fields, polymeric-based membranes still face several challenges, including instability, low mechanical strength, and propensity to fouling. The latter point has attracted the attention of numerous teams worldwide developing antifouling materials for membranes and interfaces. A convenient method to prepare antifouling membranes is via physical blending (or simply blending), which is a one-step method that consists of mixing the main matrix polymer and the antifouling material prior to casting and film formation by a phase inversion process. This review focuses on the recent development (past 10 years) of antifouling membranes via this method and uses different phase-inversion processes including liquid-induced phase separation, vapor induced phase separation, and thermally induced phase separation. Antifouling materials used in these recent studies including polymers, metals, ceramics, and carbon-based and porous nanomaterials are also surveyed. Furthermore, the assessment of antifouling properties and performances are extensively summarized. Finally, we conclude this review with a list of technical and scientific challenges that still need to be overcome to improve the functional properties and widen the range of applications of antifouling membranes prepared by blending modification.
