Determination and speciation of arsenic in drinking water samples by X-ray spectrometry technique

Arsenic is ranked as the first compound in the Substance Priority List 2023 by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). The most prominent entrance to the human body is through drinking water wherein the predominant species are arsenite and arsenate. The more toxic As(III) has rigorously threatened human health worldwide; hence, speciation and separation are the need of the hour. In this article, we have reported a simple method of arsenic speciation by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) spectrometer. Valence to core (VtC) electronic transitions, i.e., AsKβ2,5 fluorescence lines were used for arsenic speciation. This speciation study by WD-XRF entails direct measurement of activated alumina pellets containing arsenate and arsenite species adsorbed from water sample without separation of the trivalent and pentavalent species. This is the first report wherein the X-ray technique has been explored for speciation analysis of arsenic and the biggest advantage of the method lies in its applicability to direct analysis of synthesized nanotubes or other solid-phase extraction sorbents entrapping both the arsenic species. For determination of total arsenic using activated alumina as adsorbent, the most intense AsKα1,2 analytical lines were used and the instrumental limit of detection and the lower limit of quantification were 0.23 μg/L and 0.89 μg/L, respectively. For speciation, these limits were calculated to be 50 μg/L and 200 μg/L, respectively.

Polymeric Materials in Speciation Analysis Based on Solid-Phase Extraction

Speciation analysis is a relevant topic since the (eco)toxicity, bioavailability, bio (geo)chemical cycles, and mobility of a given element depend on its chemical forms (oxidation state, organic ligands, etc.). The reliability of analytical results for chemical species of elements depends mostly on the maintaining of their stability during the sample pretreatment step and on the selectivity of further separation step. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a matter of choice as the most suitable and widely used procedure for both enrichment of chemical species of elements and their separation. The features of sorbent material are of great importance to ensure extraction efficiency from one side and selectivity from the other side of the SPE procedure. This review presents an update on the application of polymeric materials in solid-phase extraction used in nonchromatographic methods for speciation analysis.

Novel covalent organic frameworks based electrospun composite nanofiber membranes as pipette-tip strong anion exchange sorbent for determination of inorganic arsenic in rice

Novel covalent organic frameworks (COFs) based PAN@TpBD(NH₂)₂ electrospun composite nanofiber membranes (ECNMs) were fabricated as strong anion exchange sorbent by implementing electrospinning technology. The finished sorbent was characterized, and key parameters of pipette-tip solid phase extraction (PTSPE) procedures were investigated. Inorganic arsenic (iAs) was successfully separated from rice under the optimal precondition conditions, and quantified by hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HG-AFS). This PTSPE-HG-AFS methodology achieved 0.015 μg L^-1 detection limit, 4.67 % relative standard deviation, and 86.48～99.11 % recoveries. In this work, preparation and characterization of this novel COFs-based anion exchange sorbent, PAN@TpBD(NH₂)₂ ECNMs, is described and its suitability for PTSPE applications is demonstrated.
