Iron-dependent autotrophic denitrification as a novel microbial driven and iron-mediated denitrification process: A critical review

Based on previous research results, iron-dependent autotrophic denitrification (IDAD) was evaluated in an all-around way to provide a theoretical basis for further research. First, this review systematically and comprehensively summarizes the development of IDAD technology and describes the physiological properties of relevant functional microorganisms and their potential mechanisms from different perspectives. Second, the possible Fe-N pathways involved in the reaction of different iron-based materials are discussed in detail. Then, the theoretical advantages of the IDAD process and potential problems are described, and the corresponding control strategies are summarized. The influence of key factors on denitrification is discussed in terms of operational and water quality parameters. In addition, the application and research direction of this technology in engineering are summarized. Finally, the latest development trends and prospects for future applications are discussed to promote an in-depth understanding of IDAD and its practical application in sewage treatment.

Performance and mechanisms of nitrogen removal from low-carbon source wastewater in an iron-carbon coupled biofilm airlift internal circulation sequencing batch reactor

An iron-carbon coupled biofilm airlift internal circulation sequencing batch reactor (IC-SBR) was constructed to treat low-carbon source wastewater. Single-factor experiments were used to determine the optimal operating conditions for the IC-SBR, with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 h, a dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of 3 mg/L, a C/N ratio of 3, and an influent NH4+-N concentration of 50 mg/L, with average removal efficiencies of total nitrogen (TN) and total organic carbon (TOC) of 78.06% and 97.15%, respectively. Mechanistic studies of the IC-SBR indicated that iron-carbon selectively enriched nitrogen removal microorganisms and promoted nitrogen removal efficiency. Carbon sources affected the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), enzyme activities, electron transport system activity, nitrogen removal gene abundance, and community structure of microorganisms in the IC-SBR. Microorganisms use EPS as a supplementary carbon source to ensure nitrogen removal efficiency when the carbon source is insufficient.

Insights into micro-and nano-zero valent iron materials: synthesis methods and multifaceted applications

The growing threat of environmental pollution to global environmental health necessitates a focus on the search for sustainable wastewater remediation materials coupled with innovative remediation strategies. Nano and micro zero-valent iron materials have attracted substantial researchers' attention due to their distinct physiochemical properties. This review article delves into novel micro- and nano-zero valent iron (ZVI) materials, analysing their synthesis methods, and exploring their multifaceted potential as a powerful tool for environmental remediation. This analysis contributes to the ongoing search of effective solutions for environmental remediation. Synthesis techniques are analysed based on their efficacy, scalability, and environmental impact, providing insights into existing methodologies, current challenges, and future directions for optimisation. Factors influencing ZVI materials' physicochemical properties and multifunctional engineering applications, including their role in wastewater and soil remediation, are highlighted. Environmental concerns, pros and cons, and the potential industrial applications of these materials are also discussed, accenting the importance of understanding the synthesis methods, materials' applications and their impacts on humans and the environment. The review is designed to provide insights into nano-and micro-ZVI materials, and their potential engineering applications, as well as guide researchers in the choice of ZVI materials' synthesis methods from a variety of nanoparticle synthesis strategies fostering nexus between these methods and industrial applications.

Enhancing total nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands: A Comparative study of iron ore and biochar amendments

Efficient nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands (CWs) remains challenging when treating agricultural runoff with a low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N). However, using biochar, iron ore, and FeCl3-modified biochar (Fe-BC) as amendments could potentially improve total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency in CWs, but the underlying mechanisms associated with adding these substrates are unclear. In this study, five CWs: quartz sand constructed wetland (Control), biochar constructed wetland, Fe-BC constructed wetland, iron ore constructed wetland, and iron ore + biochar constructed wetland, were built to compare their treatment performance. The rhizosphere microbial community compositions and their co-occurrence networks were analyzed to reveal the underlying mechanisms driving their treatment performance. The results showed that iron ore was the most efficient amendment, although all treatments increased TN removal efficiency in the CWs. Ammonia-oxidizing, heterotrophic denitrifying, nitrate-dependent anaerobic ferrous oxidizing (NAFO), and Feammox bacteria abundance was higher in the iron ore system and led to the simultaneous removal of NH4+-N, NO3--N, and NO2--N. Visual representations of the co-occurrence networks further revealed that there was an increase in cooperative mutualism (the high proportion of positive links) and more complex interactions among genera related to the nitrogen and iron cycle (especially ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria, NAFO bacteria, and Feammox bacteria) in the iron ore system, which ultimately contributed to the highest TN removal efficiency. This study provides critical insights into how different iron ore or biochar substrates could be used to treat agricultural runoff in CWs.

A novel simultaneous short-course nitrification, denitrification and fermentation process: bio-enhanced phenol degradation and denitrification in a single reactor

The feasibility of a simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and fermentation process (SNDF) under electric stirrer agitation conditions was verified in a single reactor. Enhanced activated sludge for phenol degradation and denitrification in pharmaceutical phenol-containing wastewater under low dissolved oxygen conditions, additional inoculation with Comamonas sp. BGH and optimisation of co-metabolites were investigated. At a hydraulic residence time (HRT) of 28 h, 15 mg/L of substrate as strain BGH co-metabolised substrate degraded 650 ± 50 mg/L phenol almost completely and was accompanied by an incremental increase in the quantity of strain BGH. Strain BGH showed enhanced phenol degradation. Under trisodium citrate co-metabolism, strain BGH combined with activated sludge treated phenol wastewater and degraded NO2--N from 50 ± 5 to 0 mg/L in only 7 h. The removal efficiency of this group for phenol, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and TN was 99.67%, 90.25% and 98.71%, respectively, at an HRT of 32 h. The bioaugmentation effect not only promotes the degradation of pollutants, but also increases the abundance of dominant bacteria in activated sludge. Illumina MiSeq sequencing research showed that strain BGH promoted the growth of dominant genera (Acidaminobacter, Raineyella, Pseudarcobacter) and increased their relative abundance in the activated sludge system. These genera are resistant to toxicity and organic matter degradation. This paper provides some reference for the activated sludge to degrade high phenol pharmaceutical wastewater under the action of biological enhancement.

Microbially driven Fe-N cycle: Intrinsic mechanisms, enhancement, and perspectives

The iron‑nitrogen (FeN) cycle driven by microbes has great potential for treating wastewater. Fe is a metal that is frequently present in the environment and one of the crucial trace elements needed by microbes. Due to its synergistic role in the microbial N removal process, Fe goes much beyond the essential nutritional needs of microorganisms. Investigating the mechanisms behind the linked Fe-N cycle driven by microbes is crucial. The Fe-N cycle is frequently connected with anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox), nitrification, denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), Feammox, and simultaneous nitrification denitrification (SND), etc. Although the main mechanisms of Fe-mediated biological N removal may vary depending on the valence state of the Fe, their similar transformation pathways may provide information on the study of certain element-microbial interactions. This review offers a thorough analysis of the facilitation effect and influence of Fe on the removal of nitrogenous pollutants in various biological N removal processes and summarizes the ideal Fe dosing. Additionally, the synergistic mechanisms of Fe and microbial synergistic N removal process are elaborated, covering four aspects: enzyme activity, electron transfer, microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion, and microbial community interactions. The methods to improve biological N removal based on the intrinsic mechanism were also discussed, with the aim of thoroughly understanding the biological mechanisms of Fe in the microbial N removal process and providing a reference and thinking for employing Fe to promote microbial N removal in practical applications.

Effect of Fe3+ on the nutrient removal performance and microbial community in a biofilm system

In this study, the influence of Fe3+ on N removal, microbial assembly, and species interactions in a biofilm system was determined. The results showed that maximum efficiencies of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN), phosphorus (P), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal were achieved using 10 mg/L Fe3+, reaching values of 100, 78.85, 100, and 95.8%, respectively, whereas at concentrations of 15 and 30 mg/L Fe3+ suppressed the removal of NH4+-N, TN, and COD. In terms of absolute abundance, the expression of bacterial amoA, narG, nirK, and napA was maximal in the presence of 10 mg/L Fe3+ (9.18 × 105, 8.58 × 108, 1.09 × 108, and 1.07 × 109 copies/g dry weight, respectively). Irrespective of Fe3+ concentrations, the P removal efficiency remained at almost 100%. Candidatus_Competibacter (10.26–23.32%) was identified as the most abundant bacterial genus within the system. Determinism (50%) and stochasticity (50%) contributed equally to microbial community assembly. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that in the presence of Fe3+, 60.94% of OTUs in the biofilm system exhibited positive interactions, whereas 39.06% exhibited negative interactions. Within the OTU-based co-occurrence network, fourteen species were identified as key microbes. The stability of the system was found to be predominantly shaped by microbial cooperation, complemented by competition for resources or niche incompatibility. The results of this study suggested that during chemical P removal in wastewater treatment plants using biofilm methods, the concentration of supplemental Fe3+ should be maintained at 10 mg/L, which would not only contribute to P elimination, but also enhance N and COD removal.
