The characterization of a novel magnetic biochar derived from sulfate-reducing sludge and its application for aqueous Cr(Ⅵ) removal through synergistic effects of adsorption and chemical reduction

Enhanced microbial remediation of uranium tailings through red soil utilization

Seepage of uranium tailings has become a focus of attention in the uranium mining and metallurgy industry, and in-situ microbial remediation is considered an effective way to treat uranium pollution. However, this method has the drawbacks of easy biomass loss and unstable remediation effect. To overcome these issues, spare red soil around the uranium mine was used to enhance the efficiency and stability of bioremediation. Furthermore, the bioremediation mechanism was revealed by employing XRD, FTIR, XPS, and 16S rRNA. The results showed that red soil, as a barrier material, had the adsorption potential of 8.21-148.00 mg U/kg soil, but the adsorption is accompanied by the release of certain acidic and oxidative substances. During the dynamic microbial remediation, red soil was used as a cover material to neutralize acidity, provide a higher reduction potential (<-200 mV), and increase the retention rate of microbial agent (19.06 mL/d) compared to the remediation group without red soil. In the presence of red soil, the anaerobic system could maintain the uranium concentration in the solution below 0.3 mg/L for more than 70 days. Moreover, the generation of new clay minerals driven by microorganisms was more conducive to the stability of uranium tailings. Through alcohol and amino acid metabolism of microorganisms, a reducing environment with reduced valence states of multiple elements (such as S2-, Fe2+, and U4+) was formed. At the same time, the relative abundance of functional microbial communities in uranium tailings improved in presence of red soil and Desulfovirobo, Desulfocapsa, Desulfosporosinus, and other active microbial communities reconstructed the anaerobic environment. The study provides a new two-in-one solution for treatment of uranium tailings and resource utilization of red soil through in-situ microbial remediation.

Synthesis of magnetic biochar composite using Vateria indica fruits through in-situ one-pot hydro-carbonization for Fenton-like catalytic dye degradation

The present study reports the synthesis, characterization, and application of sustainable magnetic biochar composite. The inedible fruits of Vateria indica, a powerful ayurvedic plant were hydrothermally transformed into magnetic biochar (BC-Fe3O4) in a single step and characterized by several sophisticated techniques. FESEM analysis portrayed fibrous irregular mesh-like biochar with surface clustered Fe3O4 nanoparticles, while the incidence of carbon, oxygen, and iron in the elemental analysis by EDS established magnetic biochar formation. Numerous peaks consistent with planes of (220), (311), (400), (422), (511), (440), and (120) also substantiated the occurrence of magnetite nanoparticles and biochar respectively, as analyzed by XRD. XPS analysis showed signals at 285.65 eV, 533.28 eV, 711.08 eV, and 724.68 eV corroborating a strong C-O bond, O1s orbit, Fe2+, and Fe3+ respectively. BC-Fe3O4 was superparamagnetic with saturation magnetization of 4.74 emu/g, as per VSM studies, while its specific surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter were 5.74 m2/g, 0.029 cm3/g, and 20.86 nm respectively. The Fenton-like degradation of methylene blue (5.0-25.0 ppm) was accomplished by synthesized BC-Fe3O4, in the presence of H2O2. Within 180 min, almost complete degradation was achieved, with first-order kinetics having rate constants between 0.0299 and 0.0167 min-1. Stability and recyclability studies performed over 7 cycles exhibited unaltered degradation between 93.98 and 97.59%. This study exhibits the exceptional characteristics and degradation capabilities of BC-Fe3O4 synthesized from a sustainable plant biomass.

Enhancing Cr (VI) Adsorption of Chestnut Shell Biochar through H3PO4 Activation and Nickel Doping

A high-efficiency nickel-doped porous biochar (PCNi3) has been successfully synthesized from chestnut shell waste via a two-step chemical activation treatment with H3PO4. The influences of microstructure, surface morphology, elemental composition, surface functional groups, specific surface area, porosity, pore-size distribution, and chemical properties of the surface state on the removal of Cr (VI) from water were thoroughly investigated by using XRD, FESEM, FTIR, Raman, BET, and XPS testing methods, N2 adsorption, and XPS testing techniques respectively. The results indicate that the treatment of H3PO4 activation and nickel doping can effectively improve microstructure characteristics, thus promoting Cr (VI) adsorption capacity. The effects of initial solution pH, solution concentration, time, and temperature on remediation are revealed. The Cr (VI) uptake experiments imply that the adsorption curves of PCNi3 fit well with the Freundlich model, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the Elovich model. The adsorption process of PCNi3 can be regarded as a spontaneous endothermic reaction limited by diffusion among particles and porosity. The adsorption mechanisms of PCNi3 are ion exchange, complexation, electrostatic adsorption, and coprecipitation with the assistance of surface active sites, porosity, Ni0 particles, and Ni7P3. With these advantages, PCNi3 reveals an extraordinary Cr (VI) removal capacity and a strong ability to reduce Cr (VI) to Cr (III).

A new approach to explore and assess the sustainable remediation of chromium-contaminated wastewater by biochar based on 3E model

As a cost-effective material, biochar, known as 'black gold', has been widely used for environmental applications (EA), including chromium-contaminated wastewater remediation. However, limited reports focused on the multiple impacts of biochar, including energy consumption (EC) and environmental risk (ER). Hence, to recommend biochar as a green material for sustainable development, the three critical units were explored and quantitatively assessed based on an adapted 3E model (EA-EC-ER). The tested biochar was produced by limited-oxygen pyrolysis at 400-700 °C by using three typical biomasses (Ulva prolifera, phoenix tree, and municipal sludge), and the optimal operational modulus of the 3E model was identified using six key indicators. The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between EC and biochar yield (p < 0.05). The biochar produced by phoenix tree consumed more energy due to having higher content of unstable carbon fractions. Further, high-temperature and low-temperature biochar demonstrated different chromium removal mechanisms. Notably, the biochar produced at low temperature (400 °C) achieved better EA due to having high removal capacity and stability. Regarding ER, pyrolysis temperature of 500 °C could effectively stabilize the ecological risk in all biochar and the biochar produced by Ulva prolifera depicted the greatest reduction (37-fold). However, the increase in pyrolysis temperature would lead to an increase in global warming potential by nearly 22 times. Finally, the 3E model disclosed that the biochar produced by Ulva prolifera at 500 °C with low EC, high EA, and low ER had the most positive recommendation index (+78%). Importantly, a rapid assessment methodology was established by extracting parameters from the correlation. Based on this methodology, about eight percent of biochar can be the highest recommended from more than 100 collected peer-related data. Overall, the obtained findings highlighted that the multiple impacts of biochar should be considered to efficiently advance global sustainable development goals.

Influence of elevated temperature on the species and mobility of chromium in ferrous sulfate-amended contaminated soil

Ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) combined with acid pretreatment is usually employed to remediate contaminated soils containing Cr(VI). However, the long-term efficiency of this stabilization method is important for its sustainability. In this study, a gradient temperature-elevating exposure test was employed to investigate the stability of Cr in FeSO4-remediated soil when exposed to elevated temperatures (40 °C, 120 °C, and 500 °C), possibly caused by hot weather and/or wildfires. The results of chemical extraction and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) showed that the Cr(VI) in contaminated soil was successfully transformed to Cr(III) after stabilization, resulting in the dramatic decrease of water-leachable Cr(VI). The stabilization efficiency was further improved under 40 °C treatment after 30 days. Subsequently, the 120 °C treatment (7 days) had relatively little effect on the Cr speciation and mobility in soils. However, even one day of 500 °C calcination resulted in the deterioration of stabilization efficiency, and the water-leachable Cr(VI) re-increased and became higher than the Chinese environmental standards (total Cr 15 mg/L, Cr(VI) 5 mg/L) for the classification of hazardous solid wastes. XANES results reflected that heating at 500 °C facilitate the formation of Cr2O3, which was mainly caused by thermal decomposition and dehydration of Cr(OH)3 in the soil. Besides, the transformation of Cr species resulted in the enhanced association of Cr with the most stable residual fraction (88.3%-91.6%) in soil. Based on chemical extraction results, it was suggested that the oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) contributed to the re-increased mobility of Cr(VI) in soil. However, the XANES results showed that almost no significant re-oxidization of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) happened after heating at 500 °C, which was probably caused by XANES linear combination fits (LCF) uncertainties. Moreover, the changes in soil properties, including a rise in pH to a slightly alkaline range and/or the decomposition of organic matter, possibly contributed to the enhanced mobility of Cr(VI) in soil. This study contributes to clarifying the mobility and transformation of Cr in contaminated soils and provides a support for the sustainable management of remediated soils.

Synergistic effects of adsorption and chemical reduction towards the effective Cr(VI) removal in the presence of the sulfur-doped biochar material

In this study, the anaerobic sludge withdrawn from thickener in a sewage treatment plant served as the precursor for sludge-based biochar fabrication, which was further modified via sulfur (S) heteroatom doping (i.e., S-BC). The S atom doping resulted in the adjustment of the physicochemical properties towards the carbon material, endowment of abundant functional groups on biochar surface, and increasing the binding sites between biochar and Cr(VI). Compared to the primary biochar (i.e., biochar without heteroatomic doping, named BC), S-BC exhibited a rough surface and possessed remarkable advantages in ash content, specific surface area, and pore volume. The existence of graphene carbon crystal structure for S-BC was confirmed through S-BC by XRD and FTIR analysis. The studies of adsorption kinetics and isotherms showed that pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model more fitted the Cr(VI) removal behavior in the presence of S-BC. Therefore, the chemisorption and monolayer adsorption were the primary mechanisms involved in the Cr(VI) removal process. Additionally, XPS analysis results illustrated the aqueous Cr(VI) was efficiently eliminated through the synergistic effect of chemisorption and reduction to Cr(III) in the presence of S-BC. Moreover, S-BC could still achieve the Cr(VI) eliminating efficiency of 85.31% undergoing five cycles with unchanged functional group and crystal structure via FTIR and XRD analysis. Thus, the results of this study may shed light on a new approach for simultaneous economical sludge disposal and the sustainable remediation of the Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater.

Simultaneously Cationic and Anionic Dyes Elimination via Magnetic Hydrochar Prepared from Copper Slag and Pinewood Sawdust

In practical wastewater, cationic and anionic dyes usually coexist, while synergistic removal of these pollutants is difficult due to their relatively opposite properties. In this work, copper slag (CS) modified hydrochar (CSHC) was designed as functional material by the one-pot method. Based on characterizations, the Fe species in CS can be converted to zero-valent iron and loaded onto a hydrochar substrate. The CSHC exhibited efficient removal rates for both cationic dyes (methylene blue, MB) and anionic dyes (methyl orange, MO), with a maximum capacity of 278.21 and 357.02 mg·g^-1, respectively, which was significantly higher than that of unmodified ones. The surface interactions of MB and MO between CSHC were mimicked by the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order model. In addition, the magnetic properties of CSHC were also observed, and the good magnetic properties enabled the adsorbent to be quickly separated from the solution with the help of magnets. The adsorption mechanisms include pore filling, complexation, precipitation, and electrostatic attraction. Moreover, the recycling experiments demonstrated the potential regenerative performance of CSHC. All these results shed light on the co-removal of cationic and anionic contaminates via these industrial by-products derived from environmental remediation materials.

The modified properties of sludge-based biochar with ferric sulfate and its effectiveness in promoting carbon release from particulate organic matter in rural household wastewater

The scarcity of carbon sources presents a significant challenge for the bio-treatment of rural domestic wastewater (RDW). This paper presented an innovative approach to address this issue by investigating the supplementary carbon source through in-situ degradation of particulate organic matter (POM) facilitated by ferric sulfate modified sludge-based biochar (SBC). To prepare SBC, five different contents of ferric sulfate (0%, 10%, 20%, 25%, and 33.3%) were added to sewage sludge. The results revealed that the pore and surface of SBC were enhanced, providing active sites and functional groups to accelerate the biodegradation of protein and polysaccharide. During the 8-day hydrolysis period, the concentration of soluble chemical oxidation demand (SCOD) increased and peaked (1087-1156 mg L^-1) on the fourth day. The C/N ratio increased from 3.50 (control) to 5.39 (25% ferric sulfate). POM was degraded the five dominant phyla, which were Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, Synergistota, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Although the relative abundance of dominant phyla changed, the metabolic pathway remained unchanged. The leachate of SBC (<20% ferric sulfate) was beneficial for microbes, but an excessive amount of ferric sulfate (33.3% ferric sulfate) could have inhibition effects on bacteria. In conclusion, ferric sulfate modified SBC holds the potential for the carbon degradation of POM in RDW, and further improvements should be made in future studies.

Research on the performance of modified blue coke in adsorbing hexavalent chromium

To solve the issue of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contamination in water bodies, blue coke powder (LC) was chemically changed using potassium hydroxide to create the modified material (GLC), which was then used to treat a Cr(VI)-containing wastewater solution. The differences between the modified and unmodified blue coke's adsorption characteristics for Cr(VI) were studied, and the impact of pH, starting solution concentration, and adsorption period on the GLC's adsorption performance was investigated. The adsorption behavior of the GLC was analyzed using isothermal adsorption models, kinetic models, and adsorption thermodynamic analysis. The mechanism of Cr(VI) adsorption by the GLC was investigated using characterization techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). With the biggest difference in removal rate at pH = 2, which was 2.42 times that of LC, batch adsorption experiments revealed that, under the same adsorption conditions, the GLC always performed better than LC. With a specific surface area that was three times that of LC and an average pore diameter that was 0.67 times that of LC, GLC had a more porous structure than LC. The alteration significantly increased the number of hydroxyls on the surface of GLC by altering the structural makeup of LC. The ideal pH for removing Cr(VI) was 2, and the ideal GLC adsorbent dosage was 2.0 g/L. Pseudo-second-order kinetic (PSO) model and Redlich-Peterson (RP) model can effectively describe the adsorption behavior of GLC for Cr(VI). Physical and chemical adsorption work together to remove Cr(VI) by GLC in a spontaneous, exothermic, and entropy-increasing process, with oxidation-reduction processes playing a key role. GLC is a potent adsorbent that can be used to remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions.

Improved Cr (VI) adsorption performance in wastewater and groundwater by synthesized magnetic adsorbent derived from Fe3O4 loaded corn straw biochar

This work developed an easy method to utilize corn straw (CS) waste for sustainable development and reduce the volume of waste volume as well as bring value-added. The magnetic adsorbent was prepared by loading Fe₃O₄ onto biochar derived from corn straw (Fe@CSBC), then used for capturing Cr (VI) in groundwater and wastewater samples. The characterization of adsorbents showed that Fe3O4 was successfully loaded on corn straw biochar (CSBC) and contributed to the improvement of the surface area, and surface functional groups like Fe-O, Fe-OOH, CO, and O-H. The presence of iron oxide was further confirmed by XPS and XRD analysis and a magnetization value of 35.6 emu/g was obtained for Fe@CSBC. The highest uptake capacity of Cr (VI) onto Fe@CSBC and CSBC by monolayer were 138.8 and 90.6 mg/g, respectively. By applying magnetic adsorbent Fe@CSBC for the treatment of groundwater and wastewater samples, the chromium could be removed up to 90.3 and 72.6%, respectively. The remaining efficiency of Cr (VI) was found to be 84.5% after four times reused Fe@CSBC, demonstrating the great recyclable ability of the adsorbent. In addition, several interactions between Cr (VI) and Fe@CSBC like ion exchange, complexation, and reduction reaction were discussed in the proposed adsorption mechanism. This study brings an efficient method to turn corn straw biomass into an effective magnetic adsorbent with high adsorption performance and good reusability of Cr (VI) in groundwater as well as in wastewater.
