Synergistic Cr(VI) reduction and adsorption of Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) by zerovalent iron-loaded hydroxyapatite

Transformation of As and Cd associated with Fe-Mn-modified biochar during simultaneous remediation on the contaminated soil

Here, Fe- and Mn-modified biochar (BC-Fe-Mn) was applied to simultaneously stabilize As and Cd in the contaminated soil. The removal efficiencies for NaHCO3-extractable As and DTPA-extractable Cd by BC-Fe-Mn were 60.8% and 49.6%, respectively. The speciation analyses showed that the transformation to low-crystallinity Fe-bound (F3) As, Fe-Mn oxide-bound (OX) of Cd, and residual As and Cd was primarily attributed to stabilizing the two metal(loid)s. Moreover, the correlation analyses showed that the increase of As in F3 fraction was significantly and positively associated with the increase of OX fraction Mn (r = 0.64). Similarly, OX fraction Cd was increased notably with increasing OX fraction Fe (r = 0.91) and OX fraction Mn (r = 0.76). In addition, a novel dialysis experiment was performed to separate the reacted BC-Fe-Mn from the soil for intensively investigating the stabilization mechanisms for As and Cd by BC-Fe-Mn. The characteristic crystalline compounds of (Fe0.67Mn0.33)OOH and Fe2O3 on the surface of BC-Fe-Mn were revealed by SEM-EDS and XRD. And FTIR analyses showed that α-FeOOH, R-COOFe/Mn+, and O-H on BC-Fe-Mn potentially served as the reaction sites for As and Cd. A crystalline compound of MnAsO4 was found in the soil treated by BC-Fe-Mn in the dialysis experiment. Thus, our results are beneficial to deeper understand the mechanisms of simultaneous stabilization of As and Cd by BC-Fe-Mn in soil and support the application of the materials on a large scale.

Minor chromium passivation of S-ZVI enhanced the long-term dechlorination performance of trichlorethylene: Effects of corrosion and passivation on the reactivity and selectivity

The corrosion and surface passivation of sulfidized zero-valent iron (S-ZVI) by common groundwater ions and contaminants are considered to be the most challenging aspects in the application of S-ZVI for remediation of chlorinated contaminants. This study investigated the impacts of corrosive chloride (Cl-) and passivation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) on the long-term reactivity, selectivity, corrosion behavior, and physicochemical properties during the 60-day aging process of S-ZVI. Although the co-existing of Cl- promoted the initial reactivity of S-ZVI, the rapid consumption of Fe° content shortened the reactive lifetime owing to the insufficient electron capacity. Severe passivation by Cr(VI) (30 mg L-1) preserved the Fe° content but significantly interfered with the reductive sulfur species, resulting in an increase in electron transfer resistance. In comparison, minor passivated S-ZVI (5.0 mg L-1 Cr(VI)) inhibited the hydrogen evolution while concurrently mitigating the further oxidation of the reductive iron and sulfur species, which significantly enhanced the long-term reactivity and selectivity of S-ZVI. Furthermore, the enhancement effect of minor passivation could be detected in the aging processes of one-step, two-step, and mechanochemically synthesized S-ZVI particles with different S/Fe ratios and precursors, which further verified the advantages of minor passivation. This observation is inspirable for the development of innovative strategies for environmental remediation by S-ZVI-based materials.

Degradation of reactive red 198 dye from aqueous solutions by combined technology advanced sonofenton with zero valent iron: Characteristics/ effect of parameters/kinetic studies

Dyes are one of the most common contaminants in industrial effluents, whose continuous release into the environment has become an increasing global concern. In this work, nanoparticles of zero-valent iron (NZVI) were synthesized using the chemical regeneration method ،and were utilized for the first time as a catalyst in the advanced Sono-Nano-Fenton hybrid method for the decomposition of Reactive Red 198 (RR198). The properties of zero-valent iron nanoparticles were analyzed using SEM and XRD. The effect of pH, initial dye concentration, nanoparticle dosage, zero-valent iron and H2O2 concentration on the decomposition efficiency of Red Reactive 198 was investigated. Comparing the efficiency of Reactivate 198 dye degradation in Sonolysis, Sono-NZVI, Sono-H2O2 and Sono-Nano Fenton processes showed that 97 % efficiency was achieved by the Sono-Nano Fenton process in 60 min. The kinetics of the removal process showed that this process follows pseudo-first-order kinetics and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. The results indicate that the effectiveness of the ultrasonic process in removing resistant organic pollutants such as dyes increases tremendously with the synergy of the Fenton process.

Efficient Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling mediated by L-cysteine functionalized zero-valent iron for enhancing Cr(VI) removal

Herein, L-cysteine (Cys) was modified on zero-valent iron (C-ZVI^bm) by using a mechanical ball-milling method to improve the surface functionality and the Cr(VI) removal efficiency. Characterization results indicated that Cys was modified on the surface of ZVI by the specific adsorption of Cys on the oxide shell to form a -COO-Fe complex. The Cr(VI) removal efficiency of C-ZVI^bm (99.6%) was much higher than that of ZVI^bm (7.3%) in 30 min. The attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis inferred that Cr(VI) was more likely to be adsorbed on the surface of C-ZVI^bm to form bidentate binuclear inner-sphere complexes. The adsorption process was well-matched to the Freundlich isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Electrochemical analysis and electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) spectroscopy revealed that Cys on the C-ZVI^bm lowered the redox potential of Fe(III)/Fe(II), and favored the surface Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling mediated by the electrons from Fe⁰ core. These electron transfer processes were beneficial to the surface reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Our findings provide new understandings into the surface modification of ZVI with a low-molecular weight amino acid to promote in-situ Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling, and have great potential for the construction of efficient systems for Cr(VI) removal.
