Multifunctional cobalt oxide nanocomposites for efficient removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions

High efficiency of treated-phengite clay by sodium hydroxide for the Congo red dye adsorption: Optimization, cost estimation, and mechanism study

Wastewater textile dye treatment is a challenge that requires the development of eco-friendly technology to avoid the alarming problems associated with water scarcity and health-environment. This study investigated the potential of phengite clay as naturally low-cost abundant clay from Tamgroute, Morocco (TMG) that was activated with a 0.1 M NaOH base (TMGB) after calcination at 850 °C for 3 h (TMGC) before its application in the Congo red (CR) anionic dye from the aqueous solution. The effect of various key operational parameters: adsorbent dose, contact time, dye concentration, pH, temperature, and the effect of salts, was studied by a series of adsorption experiments in a batch system, which affected the adsorption performance of TMG, TMGC, and TMGB for CR dye removal. In addition, the properties of adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics were also studied. Experimental results showed that optimal adsorption occurred at an acidic pH. At a CR concentration of 100 mg L-1, equilibrium elimination rates were 68%, 38%, and 92% for TMG, TMGC, and TMGB, respectively. The adsorption process is rapid, follows pseudo-second-order kinetics, and is best described by a Temkin and Langmuir isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption of CR onto TMGB is endothermic and spontaneous. The experimental values of CR adsorption on TMGB are consistent with the predictions of the response surface methodology. These led to a maximum removal rate of 99.97% under the following conditions: pH = 2, TMGB dose of 7 g L-1, and CR concentration of 50 mg L-1. The adsorbent TMGB's relatively low preparation cost of around $2.629 g-1 and its ability to regenerate in more than 6 thermal calcination cycles with a CR removal rate of around 56.98%, stimulate its use for textile effluent treatment on a pilot industrial scale.

HANCs exhibit selective adsorption properties, showcasing the ability to discriminate between different contaminants. The eco-friendly synthesis methods and potential for recyclability position the HANCs as environmentally friendly solutions for adsorption processes. The review acknowledges the dynamic nature of the field, which is characterized by continuous innovation and a robust focus on ongoing research endeavors. The paper highlights the HANCs' selective adsorption capabilities of various HMs and OPs through various interactions, including hydrogen and electrostatic bonding. These materials are also used for aquatic pollutants' photocatalytic degradation, where reactive hydroxyl radicals are generated to oxidize organic pollutants quickly. Future perspectives explore novel compositions, fabrication methods, and applications, driving the evolution of HANCs for improved adsorption performance. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of the state-of-the-art HANCs, offering insights into their diverse applications, sustainability aspects, and pivotal role in advancing adsorption technologies for HMs and OPs.

A critical and comprehensive review of the current status of 17β-estradiol hormone remediation through adsorption technology

Even at low concentrations, steroid hormones pose a significant threat to ecosystem health and are classified as micropollutants. Among these, 17β-estradiol (molecular formula: C18H24O2; pKa = 10.46; Log Kow = 4.01; solubility in water = 3.90 mg L-1 at 27 °C; molecular weight: 272.4 g mol-1) is extensively studied as an endocrine disruptor due to its release through natural pathways and widespread use in conventional medicine. 17β-estradiol (E2) is emitted by various sources, such as animal and human excretions, hospital and veterinary clinic effluents, and treatment plants. In aquatic biota, it can cause issues ranging from the feminization of males to inhibiting plant growth. This review aims to identify technologies for remediating E2 in water, revealing that materials like graphene oxides, nanocomposites, and carbonaceous materials are commonly used for adsorption. The pH of the medium, especially in acidic to neutral conditions, affects efficiency, and ambient temperature (298 K) supports the process. The Langmuir and Freundlich models aptly describe isothermal studies, with interactions being of a low-energy, physical nature. Adsorption faces limitations when other ions coexist in the solution. Hybrid treatments exhibit high removal efficiency. To mitigate global E2 pollution, establishing national and international standards with detailed guidelines for advanced treatment systems is crucial. Despite significant advancements in optimizing technologies by the scientific community, there remains a considerable gap in their societal application, primarily due to economic and sustainable factors. Therefore, further studies are necessary, including conducting batch experiments with these adsorbents for large-scale treatment along with economic analyses of the production process.

Adsorptive removal of heavy metals from wastewater using Cobalt-diphenylamine (Co-DPA) complex

Heavy metals like Cadmium, Lead, and Chromium are the pollutants emitted into the environment through industrial development. In this work, a new diphenylamine coordinated cobalt complex (Co-DPA) has been synthesized and tested for its efficiency in removing heavy metals from wastewater, and its adsorption capacity was investigated. The effectiveness of heavy metals removal by Co-DPA was evaluated by adjusting the adsorption parameters, such as adsorbent dose, pH, initial metals concentration, and adsorption period. Heavy metal concentrations in real sample were 0.267, 0.075, and 0.125 mg/L for Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cr3+ before using as-synthesized Co-DPA to treat wastewater. After being treated with synthesized Co-DPA the concentration of heavy metals was reduced to 0.0129, 0.00028, 0.00054 mg/L for Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cr3+, respectively, in 80 min. The removal efficiency was 95.6%, 99.5%, and 99.5% for the respective metals. The adsorption process fitted satisfactorily with Freundlich isotherm with R2(0.999, 0.997, 0.995) for Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cr3+, respectively. The kinetic data obeyed the pseudo-second order for Cd2+ and Cr2+ and the pseudo-first order for Pb2+. Based on the results obtained within the framework of this study, it is concluded that the as-synthesized Co-DPA is a good adsorbent to eliminate heavy metal ions like Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cr3+from wastewater solution. In general, Co-DPA is a promising new material for the removal of heavy metal ions from water.

Sunlight mediated removal of toxic pollutants from Yamuna wastewater using efficient nano TeO2-ZnO nanocomposites

We have utilised our TeO2-ZnO nanocomposites for Yamuna wastewater treatment in natural sunlight wherein the sampling site was Nigam Bodh Ghat, Kashmere Gate, Delhi. In BET isotherm, TZ NCs exhibited type IV isotherm forming a H3 like hysteric loop sustaining mesoporous characteristic with an increase in surface area, pore volume and pore diameter of 56.76 m2/g, 0.257 cc/g and 17.18 nm respectively, when compared to pristine ZnO NPs. Yamuna wastewater treatment was carried out using various concentrations of TZ NCs (range 0.1-0.3 g/500 mL) under natural sunlight. Post-treatment, all the physicochemical parameters such as DO, BOD, COD, Nitrates, Ammonia and Phenolic contents were found to be reduced to 10 times bringing Yamuna water parameters within safe limits. Our TZ NCs have shown to have high selectivity for the removal of Chromium from water. Out of all the three concentrations 0.2 g/500 mL or 0.4 mg/mL is the most optimum concentration of TZ NCs for complete Yamuna wastewater treatment. Also, the bacterial culture present in Yamuna water was killed by 90% using TZ having MIC of 0.1 mg/mL. The antibiofilm activity of TZ against K.pneumoniae MTCC 109 was also checked using Congo Red Agar Assay. The presence of heavy metals, their corresponding degradation and leaching studies were analysed using ICP-OES. TZ NCs showed a very minimal leaching rate of Zinc into the water, proving no toxicity associated with these nanocomposites. Further, to observe the safe disposal of TZ NCs into the soil, TZ NCs were utilised for ecotoxicity studies.

Regulating steric hindrance in difunctionalized porous aromatic frameworks for the selective separation of Pb(II)

Efficient and selective removal of Pb(II) from wastewater with complex matrix remains a challenging task. Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with predesigned functional building blocks provide a favorable platform for the selective separation of Pb(II). Herein, the bifunctional SPAFs with the introduction of -OH and -SO3H were synthesized through rationally optimizing their steric hindrance. As a result, the SPAF-0.75 exhibits favorable adsorption capacity of Pb(II) (212.34 mg g-1), which is 22 times larger than pristine framework. Competition experiment indicates that SPAF-0.75 possess the selective removal of Pb(II) without interfering from co-existing metal ions. The removal rate of SPAF-0.75 still retain at 100% after six successive cycles. The DFT calculation illustrates that -OH and -SO3H are co-participate in the process of capturing Pb(II), revealing SPAF-0.75 preferred removal of Pb(II) owing to the lowest adsorption energy (ΔEab = -3.99 eV). This study extend the understanding of the structure-property relationship and facilitate new possibilities for PAFs.

Adsorption potential of orange rind-based nanosorbents for the removal of cadmium(II) and chromium(VI) from contaminated water

Heavy metals (HMs) in water are highly poisonous and carcinogenic agents for human health. To alleviate the toxic impacts of HMs, green remediation technologies are the need of the hour. In this regard, different nanosorbents (CMCG@ORP, ORAC, NiO/NPs, and NiO@ORAC/NCs) were synthesized in the present study, and the percentage removal of heavy metals [chromium(VI) and cadmium(II) ions] was evaluated. The nanosorbents were characterized by using FTIR, SEM, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and XRD. UV-Vis spectroscopy confirmed the synthesis of nanosorbents such as NiO/NPs and NiO@ORAC/NCs at 330.5 nm and 352.55 nm, respectively. The characterization studies show that the surface of synthesized nano-sorbents was highly coarse, uneven, and abrasive. XRD pattern deduced that the sample was of single phase, and no other impurity was detected except the face-centered cubic-phase peak of NiO. The maximum adsorption of Cd (91%) and Cr (92%) was found at initial concentrations of 100 and 60 ppm respectively at contact time = 180 min, temperature 25 °C, and with an adsorbent dose of 0.5 g. Isothermal, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies were also performed to evaluate the adsorption mechanisms and feasibility of the process. Adsorption mostly followed Freundlich isotherm which indicates the multilayer adsorption phenomenon and the negative value of Gibb's free energy showed the spontaneous nature and feasibility of the adsorption reaction. Surface complexation, ion exchange, surface precipitation, and the phenomenon of physical adsorption occurred on the sorbent surface which led to the attachment of Cd and Cr to the tested nanosorbents. In conclusion, NiO@ORAC/NCs were the most effective in the alleviation of Cd(II) and Cr(VI) ions in contaminated water.

Novel Concepts for Graphene-Based Nanomaterials Synthesis for Phenol Removal from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME)

In recent years, the global population has increased significantly, resulting in elevated levels of pollution in waterways. Organic pollutants are a major source of water pollution in various parts of the world, with phenolic compounds being the most common hazardous pollutant. These compounds are released from industrial effluents, such as palm oil milling effluent (POME), and cause several environmental issues. Adsorption is known to be an efficient method for mitigating water contaminants, with the ability to eliminate phenolic contaminants even at low concentrations. Carbon-based materials have been reported to be effective composite adsorbents for phenol removal due to their excellent surface features and impressive sorption capability. However, the development of novel sorbents with higher specific sorption capabilities and faster contaminant removal rates is necessary. Graphene possesses exceptionally attractive chemical, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties, including higher chemical stability, thermal conductivity, current density, optical transmittance, and surface area. The unique features of graphene and its derivatives have gained significant attention in the application of sorbents for water decontamination. Recently, the emergence of graphene-based adsorbents with large surface areas and active surfaces has been proposed as a potential alternative to conventional sorbents. The aim of this article is to discuss novel synthesis approaches for producing graphene-based nanomaterials for the adsorptive uptake of organic pollutants from water, with a special focus on phenols associated with POME. Furthermore, this article explores adsorptive properties, experimental parameters for nanomaterial synthesis, isotherms and kinetic models, mechanisms of nanomaterial formation, and the ability of graphene-based materials as adsorbents of specific contaminants.

Preparation of Fe/Ni-MOFs for the Adsorption of Ciprofloxacin from Wastewater

This work studies the use of Fe/Ni-MOFs for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in wastewater. Fe/Ni-MOFs are prepared by the solvothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and a thermal gravimetric analyzer (TG). Under the conditions of the concentration of 50 ppm, a mass of 30 mg, and a temperature of 30 °C, the maximum adsorption capacity of ciprofloxacin removal within 5 h was 232.1 mg/g. The maximum removal rate was 94.8% when 40 mg of the Fe/Ni-MOFs was added to the solution of 10 ppm ciprofloxacin. According to the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model, the R² values were all greater than 0.99, which proved that the adsorption theory of ciprofloxacin by Fe/Ni-MOFs was consistent with the practice. The adsorption results were mainly affected by solution pH and static electricity, as well as other factors. The Freundlich isotherm model characterized the adsorption of ciprofloxacin by Fe/Ni-MOFs as multilayer adsorption. The above results indicated that Fe/Ni-MOFs were effective in the practical application of ciprofloxacin removal.

Using deep eutectic solvent dissolved low-value cotton linter based efficient magnetic adsorbents for heavy metal removal

In this study, a novel magnetic bio-adsorbent was synthesized by modifying cotton linter (CL) cellulose with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles. The adsorption capacity of CL, Fe₃O₄/CL, Fe₃O₄/CL-oxidation, and Fe₃O₄/CL-DES for Cu²⁺ was 11.0, 66.1, 85.7, and 93.1 mg g^-1, respectively, under the optimal adsorption conditions of an initial pH value of 6.0, stirring rate of 300 rpm, and a temperature of 30 °C. The presence of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles increased the proportion of hydroxyl groups and thus improved the ion-exchange ability of Cu²⁺. The dissolution of DES significantly decreased fiber crystallinity and increased the number of hydroxyl group (amorphous regions increased), thus improving the chelation reaction of Cu²⁺, which was favorable for surface adsorption. In addition, we used the Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal models to simulate the adsorption behavior of Fe₃O₄/CL-DES, and the results indicated that Cu²⁺ follows a Freundlich isotherm model of multilayer adsorption. The fitting of the adsorption kinetics model indicated that the adsorption process involves multiple adsorption mechanisms and can be described by a quasi-second-order model. These results provide a potential method for the preparation of high-efficiency adsorbents from low-value cotton linter, which has broad application prospects in wastewater treatment.
