Catalytic removal of toluene using MnO2-based catalysts: A review

Toluene Oxidation: CO2 vs Benzaldehyde: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Toluene is a common and significant volatile organic compound (VOC). Although it finds extensive application in various industrial processes (chemical manufacturing, paint and adhesive production, and as a solvent), it creates a huge environmental impact when emitted freely into the atmosphere. Two solutions were found to mitigate the emission of this pollutant: the total oxidation to CO2 and H2O and the selective oxidation into benzaldehyde. This review discusses the two main alternatives for tackling this problem: converting the toluene into carbon dioxide by total oxidation or into benzaldehyde by selective oxidation. It presents new catalytic advances, new trends, and the advantages and disadvantages of both methods.

Preparation of Heterogeneous Fenton Catalysts Cu-Doped MnO2 for Enhanced Degradation of Dyes in Wastewater

Herein, a series of heterogeneous Fenton catalysts, Cu doped MnO2 (CDM), with different Cu/Mn molar ratios were prepared via a hydrothermal reaction. Meanwhile, detailed characterizations were used to study the structures of CDM, and it is amazing that the morphology of CDM changed from nanowires to nanoflowers with an increasing amount of Cu doped. Apart from this, both the specific surface area and oxygen vacancy increased obviously with the increasing Cu/Mn molar ratio. Then, the degradation of different dyes was utilized to evaluate the catalytic activity of different CDM with H2O2 used as the oxidizing agent, and the 50%-CDM with the highest content of Cu doped displayed the best catalytic activity. Herein, the degradation efficiency (D%) of Congo red (CR) solution with low concentration (60 mg/L) reached 100% in 3 min, while the D% of CR solution with a high concentration (300 mg/L) reached 99.4% after 5 min with a higher dosage of H2O2. Additionally, the 50%-CDM also displayed excellent reusability, for which the D% values were still higher than 90% after the 14th cycles. Based on the structure characteristics and mechanism analysis, the excellent catalytic capacity of 50%-CDM was due to the combined influence of large specific surface area and abundant oxygen vacancy. Thus, a promising heterogeneous Fenton catalyst was developed in this study, which proved the treatment efficiency of actual dye wastewater.

Tailoring the Electronic Metal-Support Interactions in Supported Silver Catalysts through Al modification for Efficient Ethylene Epoxidation

Metal-modified catalysts have attracted extraordinary research attention in heterogeneous catalysis due to their enhanced geometric and electronic structures and outstanding catalytic performances. Silver (Ag) possesses necessary active sites for ethylene epoxidation, but the catalyst activity is usually sacrificed to obtain high selectivity towards ethylene oxide (EO). Herein, we report that using Al can help in tailoring the unoccupied 3d state of Ag on the MnO2 support through strong electronic metal-support interactions (EMSIs), overcoming the activity-selectivity trade-off for ethylene epoxidation and resulting in a very high ethylene conversion rate (~100 %) with 90 % selectivity for EO under mild conditions (170 °C and atmospheric pressure). Structural characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that the EMSIs obtained by the Al modification tailor the unoccupied 3d state of Ag, modulating the adsorption of ethylene (C2H4) and oxygen (O2) and facilitating EO desorption, resulting in high C2H4 conversion. Meanwhile, the increased number of positively charge Ag+ lowers the energy barrier for C2H4(ads) oxidation to produce oxametallacycle (OMC), inducing the unexpectedly high EO selectivity. Such an extraordinary electronic promotion provides new promising pathways for designing advanced metal catalysts with high activity and selectivity in selective oxidation reactions.

Construction of a colorimetric sensor array for the identification of phenolic compounds by the laccase-like activity of N-doped manganese oxide

Phenolic compounds, widely distributed in nature, encompass a diverse array of bioactive and antioxidant properties. The detection of different phenolic compound types holds paramount importance in elucidating their bioactivity and health effects, ensuring the quality and safety of food and drugs. Consequently, the development of simple, rapid, and cost-effective colorimetric sensing arrays capable of simultaneous phenolic compound detection has emerged as a prominent research pursuit. In this study, we present a one-step hydrothermal synthesis of N-doped MnO2 nanoflowers (NMF). NMF possess an extensive specific surface area and abundant oxygen vacancies, effectively mimicking the activity of natural laccase. Leveraging this laccase-like activity, NMF demonstrates the ability to catalyze various phenolic compounds, generating distinctive fingerprint signals. Notably, the developed colorimetric sensing array exhibits remarkable efficacy in effectively identifying and differentiating phenolic compounds within complex mixtures. Furthermore, the NMF colorimetric sensing array demonstrates successful identification of phenolic compounds in diverse environments, including food and urine samples. Overall, this study provides new insights into the design of transition metal materials for the simulation of laccase and colorimetric sensing arrays. It provides a promising avenue for the development of advanced detection platforms for phenolic compounds.

Synthesis of xCe-MnO2 with three-dimensional ultra-thin nanosheet structure and its excellent low-temperature reducibility for toluene catalysis

A series of xCe-MnO2 (x = 0-1) catalysts were synthesized using ammonium oxalate as a precipitator via the redox precipitation method and hydrothermal synthesis method. The results indicate that 0.25Ce-MnO2 exhibited the highest catalytic activity for toluene oxidation, with the T99 of 240 °C. Characterization results from XRD, Raman, SEM, TEM, EDS-mapping, BET, and other techniques reveal that the 0.25Ce-MnO2 catalyst exhibited a three-dimensional multistage ultrathin nanosheet structure by adjusting the introduction amount of Ce, with abundant active sites, and effectively formed Ce-Mn homogeneous dispersion. The larger pore size and volume of 0.25Ce-MnO2 catalyst lead to it excellent toluene transfer ability. Furthermore, compared with MnO2, the crystal pattern of 0.25Ce-MnO2 shifted to the tetragonal cryptomelane type α-MnO2 phase and exposed more crystal planes which are beneficial to catalyze toluene. H2-TPR, O2-TPD, and XPS characterization further confirmed the strong interaction between Ce and Mn oxides, which exhibited better low-temperature reducibility and oxygen migration, along with abundant Ce3+ and Mn3+ species, where lattice oxygen played a major role. Moreover, in situ DRIFTS revealed that the 0.25Ce-MnO2 catalyst showed higher adsorption and desorption capacity for toluene than the MnO2 catalyst, and benzoate species were the key intermediates for catalytic oxidation. Additionally, benzoate and surface phenolic species were the key intermediates for catalytic oxidation of MnO2. Because 0.25Ce-MnO2 possesses better ability of converting toluene to benzoate species, it exhibits better activity.

Improved redox synthesis of Mn–Co bimetallic oxide catalysts using citric acid and their toluene oxidation activity

In this work, high-activity cobalt-doped α-MnO₂ hybrid materials were prepared using the citric acid oxidation reduction (CR) technique and applied to the catalytic oxidation of toluene. Compared to the traditional processes such as sol–gel, co-precipitation and our previous reported self-driving combustion process, the microstructure of Mn–Co bimetallic oxide catalyst is easier to regulated as well as the dispersion of active phase. Moreover, some accurate characterization techniques such as XRD, H₂-TPR, O₂-TPD, SEM, TEM, and XPS have been employed, to further illustrate the intrinsic factors for the efficient catalytic oxidation of toluene. It was ultimately found that the CR-Mn10Co1 prepared by citric acid oxidation reduction method could catalyze the oxidation of 90% of toluene at 232 °C, and its excellent catalytic performance was significantly related to its large specific surface area, excellent oxidation reduction ability, and abundant Mn³⁺ species and oxygen vacancy content. Therefore, citric acid oxidation reduction (CR) provides a convenient and effective route for the efficient and low-cost synthesis of Mn–Co catalysts for removing VOCs.

The CR method was used to synthesize a nanorod CoO₂/α-MnO₂ catalyst with large specific surface area and abundant oxygen vacancies.
