Manganese-doped hydroxyapatite as an effective adsorbent for the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II)

Assembly of core-shell Fe3O4 @CD-MOFs derived hollow magnetic microcubes for efficient extraction of hazardous substances: Plausible mechanisms for selective adsorption

Hazardous heavy metals and organic substances removal is of great significance for ensuring the safety of aquatic-ecosystem, yet the highly effective and selective extraction always remains challenging. To address this problem, magnetic hollow microcubes were fabricated through thermal carbonization of Fe3O4-COOH@ γ-CD-MOFs, and core-shell structured precursors were in-situ greenly constructed on a large scale via microwave-assisted self-assembly strategy. As noted, the development of secondary crystallization was utilized to achieve uniform dispersion of cores within MOFs frameworks and thus improved magnetic and adsorption ability of composites. Acquired magnetic Fe3O4 @HC not only can harvest excellent extraction of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, and Cu of 129.87, 151.05, and 106.98 mg·g-1) but also exhibit highly selective adsorption ability for cationic organics (separation efficiency higher than 95.0 %). Impressively, Fe3O4 @HC achieved outstanding adsorption (60-80 %) of Cd in realistic mussel cooking broth with no obvious loss in amino acid. Characterizations better offer mechanistic insight into the enhanced selectivity of positively charged pollutants can be attributed to synergistic effect of ions exchange and electrostatic interaction of abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. Our study provides a feasible route by rationally developing core-shell structured composites to promote the practical applications of sustainable water treatment and value-added utilization of processing by-products.

Advanced applications of hydroxyapatite nanocomposite materials for heavy metals and organic pollutants removal by adsorption and photocatalytic degradation: A review

This comprehensive review delves into the forefront of scientific exploration, focusing on hydroxyapatite-based nanocomposites (HANCs) and their transformative role in the adsorption of heavy metals (HMs) and organic pollutants (OPs). Nanoscale properties, including high surface area and porous structure, contribute to the enhanced adsorption capabilities of HANCs. The nanocomposites' reactive sites facilitate efficient contaminant interactions, resulting in improved kinetics and capacities. HANCs exhibit selective adsorption properties, showcasing the ability to discriminate between different contaminants. The eco-friendly synthesis methods and potential for recyclability position the HANCs as environmentally friendly solutions for adsorption processes. The review acknowledges the dynamic nature of the field, which is characterized by continuous innovation and a robust focus on ongoing research endeavors. The paper highlights the HANCs' selective adsorption capabilities of various HMs and OPs through various interactions, including hydrogen and electrostatic bonding. These materials are also used for aquatic pollutants' photocatalytic degradation, where reactive hydroxyl radicals are generated to oxidize organic pollutants quickly. Future perspectives explore novel compositions, fabrication methods, and applications, driving the evolution of HANCs for improved adsorption performance. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of the state-of-the-art HANCs, offering insights into their diverse applications, sustainability aspects, and pivotal role in advancing adsorption technologies for HMs and OPs.

Biogenic calcium improved Cd2+ and Pb2+ immobilization in soil using the ureolytic bacteria Bacillus pasteurii

Bioremediation based on microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) was conducted in cadmium and lead contaminated soil to investigate the effects of MICP on Cd and Pb in soil. In this study, soil indigenous nitrogen was shown to induce MICP to stabilize heavy metals without inputting exogenous urea. The results showed that applying Bacillus pasteurii coupled with CaCl2 reduced Cd and Pb bioavailability, which could be clarified through the proportion of exchangeable Cd and Pb in soil decreasing by 23.65 % and 12.76 %, respectively. Moreover, B. pasteurii was combined separately with hydroxyapatite (HAP), eggshells (ES), and oyster shells (OS) to investigate their effects on soil heavy metals' chemical fractions, toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP)-extractable Cd and Pb as well as enzymatic activity. Results showed that applying B. pasteurii in soil significantly decreased the heavy metals in the exchangeable fraction and increased them in the carbonate phase fraction. When B. pasteurii was combined with ES and OS, the content of carbonate-bound Cd increased by 114.72 % and 118.81 %, respectively, significantly higher than when B. pasteurii was combined with HAP, wherein the fraction of carbonate-bound Cd increased by 86 %. The combination of B. pasteurii and biogenic calcium effectively reduced the leached contents of Cd and Pb in soil, and the TCLP-extractable Cd and Pb fractions decreased by 43.88 % and 30.66 %, respectively, in the BP + ES group and by 52.60 % and 41.77 %, respectively, in the BP + OS group. This proved that MICP reduced heavy metal bioavailability in the soil. Meanwhile, applying B. pasteurii and calcium materials significantly increased the soil urease enzyme activity. The microstructure and chemical composition of the soil samples were studied, and the results from scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction demonstrated the MICP process and identified the formation of CaCO3, Ca0.67Cd0.33CO3, and PbCO3 in heavy metal-contaminated soil.

Risedronate-functionalized manganese-hydroxyapatite amorphous particles: A potent adjuvant for subunit vaccines and cancer immunotherapy

The cGAS-STING pathway and the Mevalonate Pathway are druggable targets for vaccine adjuvant discovery. Manganese (Mn) and bisphosphonates are known to exert adjuvant effects by targeting these two pathways, respectively. This study found the synergistic potential of the two pathways in enhancing immune response. Risedronate (Ris) significantly amplified the Mn adjuvant early antibody response by 166-fold and fortified its cellular immunity. However, direct combination of Mn2+ and Ris resulted in increased adjuvant toxicity (40% mouse mortality). By the combination of doping property of hydroxyapatite (HA) and its high affinity for Ris, we designed Ris-functionalized Mn-HA micro-nanoparticles as an organic-inorganic hybrid adjuvant, named MnHARis. MnHARis alleviated adjuvant toxicity (100% vs. 60% survival rate) and exhibited good long-term stability. When formulated with the varicella-zoster virus glycoprotein E (gE) antigen, MnHARis triggered a 274.3-fold increase in IgG titers and a 61.3-fold surge in neutralization titers while maintaining a better long-term humoral immunity compared to the aluminum adjuvant. Its efficacy spanned other antigens, including ovalbumin, HPV18 VLP, and SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Notably, the cellular immunity elicited by the group of gE + MnHARis was comparable to the renowned Shingrix®. Moreover, intratumoral co-administration with an anti-trophoblast cell surface antigen 2 nanobody revealed synergistic antitumor capabilities. These findings underscore the potential of MnHARis as a potent adjuvant for augmenting vaccine immune responses and improving cancer immunotherapy outcomes.

Hydroxyapatite and its composite in heavy metal decontamination: Adsorption mechanisms, challenges, and future perspective

Nanohydroxyapatite (n-HAP), recognized by its peculiar crystal architecture and distinctive attributes showcased the underlying potential in adsorbing heavy metal ions (HMI). In this paper, the intrinsic mechanism of HMI adsorption by n-HAP was first revealed. Subsequently, the selectivity and competitiveness of n-HAP for HMI in a variety of environments containing various interferences from cations, anions, and organic molecules are elucidated. Next, n-HAP was further categorized according to its morphological dimensions, and its adsorption properties and intrinsic mechanisms were investigated based on these different morphologies. It was shown that although n-HAP has excellent adsorption capacity and cost-effectiveness, its application is often challenging to realize due to its inherent fragility and agglomeration, the technical problems required for its handling, and the difficulty of recycling. Finally, to address these issues, this paper discusses the tendency of n-HAP and its hybridized/modified materials to adsorb HMI as well as the limitations of their applications. By summarizing the limitations and future directions of hybridization/modification HAP in the field of HMI contamination abatement, this paper provides insightful perspectives for its gradual improvement and rational application.

Recent progress in magnetic polydopamine composites for pollutant removal in wastewater treatment

Various water pollution issues pose a significant threat to human water safety. Magnetic polydopamine composites (MPCs), which can be separated by magnetic fields after the adsorption process, exhibit outstanding adsorption capacity and heterogeneous catalytic properties, making them promising materials for water treatment applications. In particular, by modifying the polydopamine (PDA) coating, MPCs can acquire enhanced high reactivity, antibacterial properties, and biocompatibility. This also provides an attractive platform for further fabrication of hybrid materials with specific adsorption, catalytic, antibacterial, and water-oil separation capabilities. To systematically provide the background knowledge and recent research advances in MPCs, this paper presents a critical review of MPCs for water treatment in terms of both structure and mechanisms of effect in applications. Firstly, the impact of different PDA positions within the composite structure is investigated to summarize the optimization of properties contributed by PDA when acting as the shell, core, or bridge. The roles of various secondary modifications of magnetic materials by PDA in addressing water pollution problems are explored. It is anticipated that this work will be a stimulus for further research and development of magnetic composite materials with real-world application potential.

Facet-Controlled Growth of Hydroxyapatite for Effectively Removing Pb from Aqueous Solutions

To address the growing concerns regarding severe water pollution, effective and environmentally friendly adsorbents must be identified. In this study, we prepared hydroxyapatite (HAp, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) as an eco-friendly absorbent via simple precipitation and obtained rod- (r-HAp) and plate-shaped HAp (p-HAp). The approach to obtaining p-HAp involved a low pH titration rate, promoting growth along the c-axis due to the adsorption of OH- on the (110) facet. Conversely, r-HAp was obtained by maintaining a high concentration of OH- during the initial stage through rapid pH titration, leading to a stronger restrictive effect on the growth of positively charged a(b)-planes. p-HAp demonstrated superior adsorption capacity, removing Pb through dissolution and recrystallization, achieving an impressive 625 mg/g within a 60 min reaction time compared to r-HAp. Our findings afford insights into the Pb removal mechanisms of HAp with different morphologies and can aid in the development of water purification strategies against heavy metal contamination.

Mechanistic insight into lead immobilization on bone-derived carbon/hydroxyapatite composite at low and high initial lead concentration

The contamination of heavy metal lead has a serious impact on the natural environment and organisms. Among various materials for lead removal, animal bone derived hydroxyapatite has received extensive attention. However, there are different opinions among researchers regarding the mechanism of lead removal by hydroxyapatite, possibly due to varying initial lead concentrations used in different studies and lack of accuracy in the study of lead removal mechanisms. In present work, we synthesized a carbon-containing hydroxyapatite (CHAP) through pyrolysis of bovine bone with excellent lead removal efficiency, and further investigated the lead removal mechanism of CHAP under high and low initial lead concentrations by combining XRD Rietveld refinement, FTIR, XPS, HRTEM etc. methods. The results showed that under low initial Pb2+ concentration condition, the main mechanism of lead removal by CHAP was chemical precipitation (94.1 %), with small contributions of lead complexation with carbon functional groups and cation-π interactions on the amorphous carbon in CHAP, and surface adsorption on the precipitates. Under high initial Pb2+ concentration condition, chemical precipitation remained the main mechanism (74.68 %), but the contributions of the other three mechanisms increased, and ion exchange appeared in the later stage of the removal process. This study provides new insights on the lead immobilization mechanism by CHAP at different initial Pb2+ concentrations in water.

Regulating steric hindrance in difunctionalized porous aromatic frameworks for the selective separation of Pb(II)

Efficient and selective removal of Pb(II) from wastewater with complex matrix remains a challenging task. Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with predesigned functional building blocks provide a favorable platform for the selective separation of Pb(II). Herein, the bifunctional SPAFs with the introduction of -OH and -SO3H were synthesized through rationally optimizing their steric hindrance. As a result, the SPAF-0.75 exhibits favorable adsorption capacity of Pb(II) (212.34 mg g-1), which is 22 times larger than pristine framework. Competition experiment indicates that SPAF-0.75 possess the selective removal of Pb(II) without interfering from co-existing metal ions. The removal rate of SPAF-0.75 still retain at 100% after six successive cycles. The DFT calculation illustrates that -OH and -SO3H are co-participate in the process of capturing Pb(II), revealing SPAF-0.75 preferred removal of Pb(II) owing to the lowest adsorption energy (ΔEab = -3.99 eV). This study extend the understanding of the structure-property relationship and facilitate new possibilities for PAFs.
