Recent advances in perovskite-based Z-scheme and S-scheme heterojunctions for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Bi-functional NiFe2O4/SrTiO3 S-scheme heterojunction for eminent performance photocatalytic treatment of sewage effluent and electrochemical hydrazine determination

Devising of materials that afforded dual applicability in decontamination and pollutant detection were still a towering challenge owing to the increasing flux of discharge toxic contaminants over the years. Herein, the NiFe2O4 nanoparticles-loaded on cube-like SrTiO3 (NiFe2O4/SrTiO3) composite was fabricated by a two-step hydrothermal approach providing remarkable photocatalytic treatment and electrochemical sensing of noxious pollutants in wastewater. The material traits of the fabricated composite were scrutinized by myriad characterization approaches. The NiFe2O4/SrTiO3 hybrid material demonstrated high surface area of 19.81 m2/g, adequate band gap energy of 2.75 eV, and prominent photoluminescence characteristics. In the presence of visible light, the NiFe2O4/SrTiO3 exhibited profound photocatalysis capability to eliminate sewage effluent-bearing chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTCH) with 88.6% COD removal in 120 min, outperforming other pure materials. Meanwhile, the toxicity examination of effluent, the possible degradation pathway of CTCH and the proposed photocatalysis mechanism were also divulged. More importantly, the glassy carbon electrode was modified with synergized NiFe2O4/SrTiO3 (NiFe2O4/SrTiO3-GCE) was adopted for the precise quantification of Hydrazine (Hz). The NiFe2O4/SrTiO3-GCE obeyed first-order response for the Hz detection within the range of 1-10 mM: cyclic voltametric: limit of detection (LOD) of 0.119 μM with sensitivity of 18.9 μA μM-1 cm-2, and linear sweep voltametric: LOD of 0.222 μM with a sensitivity of 12.05 μA μM-1 cm-2. The stability and interference of modified electrode were also inspected. This work furnished valuable insights to yield a composite with the prominent S-scheme heterojunction system for quenching of charge carrier recombination and consequently contributing to the future realization into the domains of environmental clean-up and toxic chemical detection.

WO3/BiOBr S-Scheme Heterojunction Photocatalyst for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The photocatalytic CO2 reduction strategy driven by visible light is a practical way to solve the energy crisis. However, limited by the fast recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes in photocatalysts, photocatalytic efficiency is still low. Herein, a WO3/BiOBr S-scheme heterojunction was formed by combining WO3 with BiOBr, which facilitated the transfer and separation of photoinduced electrons and holes and enhanced the photocatalytic CO2 reaction. The optimized WO3/BiOBr heterostructures exhibited best activity for photocatalytic CO2 reduction without any sacrificial reagents, and the CO yield reached 17.14 μmol g-1 after reaction for 4 h, which was 1.56 times greater than that of BiOBr. The photocatalytic stability of WO3/BiOBr was also improved.

Recent progress in ZnCr and NiCr layered double hydroxides and based photocatalysts for water treatment and clean energy production

In pursuit of advancing photocatalysts for superior performance in water treatment and clean energy generation, researchers are increasingly focusing on layered double hydroxides (LDHs) which have garnered significant attention due to their customizable properties, morphologies, distinctive 2D layered structure and flexible options for modifying anions and cations. No review has previously delved specifically into ZnCr and NiCr LDH-based photocatalysts and therefore, this review highlights the recent surge in ZnCr and NiCr-based LDHs as potential photocatalysts for their applications in water purification and renewable energy generation. The structural and fundamental characteristics of layered double hydroxides and especially ZnCr-LDHs and NiCr-LDHs are outlined. Further, the various synthesis techniques for the preparation of ZnCr-LDHs, NiCr-LDHs and their composite and heterostructure materials have been briefly discussed. The applicability of ZnCr-LDH and NiCr-LDH based photocatalysts in tackling significant issues in water treatment and sustainable energy generation is the main emphasis of this review. It focuses on photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater, elucidating the principles and advancements for enhancing the efficiency of these materials. It also explores their role in H2 production through water splitting, conversion of CO2 into valuable fuels and NH3 synthesis from N2, shedding light on their potential for clean energy solutions. The insights presented herein offer valuable guidance for researchers working towards sustainable solutions for environmental remediation and renewable energy generation.

Charge transfer in TiO2-based photocatalysis: fundamental mechanisms to material strategies

Semiconductor-based photocatalysis has attracted significant interest due to its capacity to directly exploit solar energy and generate solar fuels, including water splitting, CO2 reduction, pollutant degradation, and bacterial inactivation. However, achieving the maximum efficiency in photocatalytic processes remains a challenge owing to the speedy recombination of electron-hole pairs and the limited use of light. Therefore, significant endeavours have been devoted to addressing these issues. Specifically, well-designed heterojunction photocatalysts have been demonstrated to exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity through the physical distancing of electron-hole pairs generated during the photocatalytic process. In this review, we provide a systematic discussion ranging from fundamental mechanisms to material strategies, focusing on TiO2-based heterojunction photocatalysts. Current efforts are focused on developing heterojunction photocatalysts based on TiO2 for a variety of photocatalytic applications, and these projects are explained and assessed. Finally, we offer a concise summary of the main insights and challenges in the utilization of TiO2-based heterojunction photocatalysts for photocatalysis. We expect that this review will serve as a valuable resource to improve the efficiency of TiO2-based heterojunctions for energy generation and environmental remediation.

Construction of a stable S-scheme NiSnO3/g-C3N4 heterojunction on activated carbon fibre for the degradation of glyphosate in water under flow condition

Creating light-harvesting heterojunctions as a photocatalyst is critical for efficiently treating organics-laden wastewater. Yet the materials stabilization and limited reusability hinder their practical applications. In this study, an S-scheme heterojunction in the Sn-based perovskite and g-C3N4 (gCN) composite, supported on an activated carbon fiber (ACF) substrate, is developed for glyphosate (GLP) degradation under water under flow conditions. The reusable NiSnO3-gCN/ACF photocatalyst was synthesized using a simple wet impregnation and calcination method. The supported photocatalyst achieved 99% GLP-removal at 4 mL/min water flowrate and 1.25 g/m2 of photocatalyst loading in ACF. The photocatalyst showed a stable structure and repeat photocatalytic performance across 5 cycles despite prolonged visible light exposure under flow conditions. The materials stability is attributed to the effective dispersion of NiSnO3-gC3N4 in ACF, preventing the photocatalyst from elution in water flow. Radical trapping experiment revealed the superoxide and hydroxyl radicals as the primary reactive species in the GLP-degradation pathway. A plausible S-scheme mechanism was proposed for heterojunction formation, based on the high resolution deconvoluted spectra of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the radical trapping experimental results. The inexpensive Sn-based perovskite synthesized in this study is indicated as an alternative to Ti-based perovskites for wastewater remediation application.
