Ultrafast excited state dynamics of the bi- and termolecular stilbene-viologen charge-transfer complexes assembled via host–guest interactions

A novel fluorescent sensor for diammonium and metal ions based on a supramolecular charge-transfer complex of bis(aza-18-crown-6)-containing dienone

A bis(aza-18-crown-6)-containing 2,5-di(benzylidene)cyclopentanone and a bis(ammoniopropyl) derivative of 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene in MeCN were found to form a supramolecular charge-transfer complex, which can act as an "off-on" fluorescent sensor for the Ca2+ and 1,12-dodecanediammonium ions. The molecular structure of this complex in solution was studied by density functional theory calculations.

Back electron transfer rates determine the photoreactivity of donor-acceptor stilbene complexes in a macrocyclic host

Host-guest 2 : 1 complexation of photoreactive alkene guests improves the selectivity of [2 + 2] photodimerizations by templating alkene orientation prior to irradiation. Host-guest chemistry can also provide 1 : 1 : 1 complexes through the inclusion of electronically complementary donor and acceptor guests, but the photoreactivity of such complexes has not been investigated. We imagined that such complexes could enable selective cross-[2 + 2] photocycloadditions between donor and acceptor stilbenes. In pursuit of this strategy, we investigated a series of stilbenes and found 1 : 1 : 1 complexes with cucurbit[8]uril that exhibited charge-transfer (CT) absorption bands in the visible and near-IR regions. Irradiation of the CT band of an azastilbene, 4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylate, and cucurbit[8]uril ternary complex led to a selective cross-[2 + 2] photocycloaddition, while other substrate pairs exhibited no productive chemistry upon CT excitation. Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we were able to understand the variable photoreactivity of different stilbene donor-acceptor complexes. We found that back electron transfer following CT excitation of the photoreactive complex is positioned deep in the Marcus inverted region due to electrostatic stabilization of the ground state, allowing [2 + 2] to effectively compete with this relaxation pathway. Control reactions revealed that the cucurbit[8]uril host not only serves to template the reaction from the ground state, but also protects the long-lived radical ions formed by CT from side reactions. This protective role of the host suggests that donor-acceptor host-guest ternary complexes could be used to improve existing CT-initiated photochemistry or access new reactivity.

Pseudodimeric Complexes of an (18-Crown-6)stilbene with Styryl Dyes Containing an Ammonioalkyl Group: Synthesis, Structure, and Stereospecific [2 + 2] Cross-Photocycloaddition

A new efficient method was proposed for the synthesis of (18-crown-6)stilbene; the structure of the product was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. In MeCN, this compound forms pseudodimeric complexes with N-(2-ammonioethyl)-4-styrylpyridinium and N-(3-ammoniopropyl)-4-styrylpyridinium diperchlorates via hydrogen bonding between the ammonium group and the crown ether oxygen atoms. The ammonioethyl derivative was synthesized for the first time. The stability constants and spectral characteristics of the complexes were measured by spectrophotometric and fluorescence titration. Photoirradiation of the pseudodimeric complex of (18-crown-6)stilbene with the ammoniopropyl dye resulted in the stereospecific [2 + 2] cross-photocycloaddition reaction. The replacement of the stilbene moiety in the crown compound by a styrylpyridine moiety led to a 5-fold increase in the quantum yield of the photoprocess. The most probable cause for this effect is the presence of photoinduced electron transfer in (18-crown-6)stilbene complexes. This assumption is confirmed by fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations.

Highly Stable Supramolecular Donor-Acceptor Complexes Involving a Bis(18-Crown-6)azobenzene as Weak Donor: Structure-Property Relationships

The physicochemical properties of highly stable supramolecular donor-acceptor (D-A) complexes of a bis(18-crown-6)azobenzene (weak π-donor) with a series of bis(ammonioalkyl) derivatives of viologen-like molecules (π-acceptors) in acetonitrile were studied using cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, ¹H NMR spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The crystalline structures of the bis(crown)azobenzene and its complex with a bis(ammoniopropyl) derivative of 2,7-diazapyrene were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. In solution, all of the supramolecular D-A complexes studied have a pseudocyclic structure owing to ditopic coordination of the ammonium groups of the acceptor to the crown ether moieties of the donor. These complexes show somewhat lower stability as compared with the previously studied complexes of the related derivative of stilbene (strong π-donor), which is explained by the relatively weak intermolecular charge-transfer (CT) interactions. Time-dependent DFT calculations predict that the low-energy CT transition in the D-A complex of the bis(crown)azobenzene with a bis(ammoniopropyl) derivative of 4,4'-bipyridine lies between the local ππ* and nπ* transitions of the azobenzene. The absorption band associated with the CT transition is indiscernible in the spectrum since it is overlapped with broad and more intense ππ* and nπ* bands. It was found that the E → Z photoisomerization quantum yield of the bis(crown)azobenzene decreases by almost an order of magnitude upon the complexation with the 4,4'-bipyridine derivative. This effect was tentatively attributed to the intermolecular electron transfer that occurs in the ¹ππ* excited state of the azobenzene and competes with the ¹ππ* → ¹ nπ* internal conversion.

Femtosecond excited state dynamics of stilbene-viologen complexes with a weakly pronounced charge transfer

The femtosecond dynamics of photoinduced electron transfers in supramolecular donor-acceptor complexes between (E)-bis(18-crown-6)stilbene (D) and tetraperchlorates of 2,7-di(2-ammonioethyl)(2,7-diazapyrenium) (A1), 3,3'-(E)-ethene-1,2-diylbis[1-(3-ammoniopropyl)pyridinium] (A2) and 4,4'-ethane-1,2-diylbis[1-(3-ammoniopropyl)pyridinium] (A3) was studied. The acceptors A2 and A3 are weak electron acceptors whose first reduction potentials are equal to -1.0 and -1.2 V (Ag), respectively, while A1 is a strong acceptor with a reduction potential of -0.42 V. It was shown that the back electron transfer time in CT-states of the complexes D·A2 and D·A3 is 30-40 ps, which is approximately 50 times greater than the analogous time for the charge transfer complexes studied earlier. The complex D·A1 is characterized by ultrafast back electron transfer (770 fs). The relaxation pathway of excited states of D·A1 depends on the wavelength of the excitation light. When excited at 356 nm, the accumulation of a transient locally excited (LE) state with a 250 fs lifetime was observed. But when excited at 425 nm, the formation of the LE-state was not observed.

PSI-SMALP, a Detergent-free Cyanobacterial Photosystem I, Reveals Faster Femtosecond Photochemistry

Cyanobacterial photosystem I (PSI) functions as a light-driven cyt c6-ferredoxin/oxidoreductase located in the thylakoid membrane. In this work, the energy and charge transfer processes in PSI complexes isolated from Thermosynechococcus elongatus via conventional n-dodecyl-β-D-maltoside solubilization (DM-PSI) and a, to our knowledge, new detergent-free method using styrene-maleic acid copolymers (SMA-PSI) have been investigated by pump-to-probe femtosecond laser spectroscopy. In DM-PSI preparations excited at 740 nm, the excitation remained localized on the long-wavelength chlorophyll forms within 0.1-20 ps and revealed little or no charge separation and oxidation of the special pair, P700. The formation of ion-radical pair P700+A1- occurred with a characteristic time of 36 ps, being kinetically controlled by energy transfer from the long-wavelength chlorophyll to P700. Quite surprisingly, the detergent-free SMA-PSI complexes upon excitation by these long-wave pulses undergo an ultrafast (<100 fs) charge separation in ∼45% of particles. In the remaining complexes (∼55%), the energy transfer to P700 occurred at ∼36 ps, similar to the DM-PSI. Both isolation methods result in a trimeric form of PSI, yet the SMA-PSI complexes display a heterogenous kinetic behavior. The much faster rate of charge separation suggests the existence of an ultrafast pathway for charge separation in the SMA-PSI that may be disrupted during detergent isolation.

Formation of a supramolecular charge-transfer complex. Ultrafast excited state dynamics and quantum-chemical calculations

The relaxation scheme of the 1·3 singlet state excited by a 25 fs laser pulse was proposed. It includes very fast vibrational relaxation, and direct and back electron transfer resulting in complete fluorescence quenching.

Dynamics of excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer in 2-amino-3-(2'-benzazolyl)quinoline cations

It was found that cations formed by the protonation of 2-amino-3-(2'-benzoxazolyl)-quinoline (ABO) and 2-amino-3-(2'-benzothiazolyl)-quinoline (ABT) at the nitrogen atom of the quinoline ring exhibit excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). The two-band fluorescence of these cations is due to the emission from two species: the initial tautomer (short-wavelength band) and the ESIPT product (long-wavelength band). The relative intensity of the long-wavelength band depends on the basicity of the proton-accepting moiety and temperature. Quantum-chemical calculations demonstrated that ESIPT in cations involves overcoming a significant potential barrier, which increases with the decreasing basicity of the proton-accepting benzazole moiety. Using femtosecond absorption spectroscopy and nanosecond fluorescence spectroscopy, the effective ESIPT time in the studied cations was determined, which increased with decreasing temperature.

Femtosecond excited state dynamics of a stilbene–viologen charge transfer complex assembled via host–guest interaction

Femtosecond primary charge separation in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 photosystem I

The ultrafast (<100 fs) conversion of delocalized exciton into charge-separated state between the primary donor P700 (bleaching at 705 nm) and the primary acceptor A0 (bleaching at 690 nm) in photosystem I (PS I) complexes from Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 was observed. The data were obtained by application of pump-probe technique with 20-fs low-energy pump pulses centered at 720 nm. The earliest absorbance changes (close to zero delay) with a bleaching at 690 nm are similar to the product of the absorption spectrum of PS I complex and the laser pulse spectrum, which represents the efficiency spectrum of the light absorption by PS I upon femtosecond excitation centered at 720 nm. During the first approximately 60 fs the energy transfer from the chlorophyll (Chl) species bleaching at 690 nm to the Chl bleaching at 705 nm occurs, resulting in almost equal bleaching of the two forms with the formation of delocalized exciton between 690-nm and 705-nm Chls. Within the next approximately 40 fs the formation of a new broad band centered at approximately 660 nm (attributed to the appearance of Chl anion radical) is observed. This band decays with time constant simultaneously with an electron transfer to A1 (phylloquinone). The subtraction of kinetic difference absorption spectra of the closed (state P700+A0A1) PS I reaction center (RC) from that of the open (state P700A0A1) RC reveals the pure spectrum of the P700+A0- ion-radical pair. The experimental data were analyzed using a simple kinetic scheme: An*-->k1[(PA0)*A1--><100 fs P+A0-A1]-->k2P+A0A1-, and a global fitting procedure based on the singular value decomposition analysis. The calculated kinetics of transitions between intermediate states and their spectra were similar to the kinetics recorded at 694 and 705 nm and the experimental spectra obtained by subtraction of the spectra of closed RCs from the spectra of open RCs. As a result, we found that the main events in RCs of PS I under our experimental conditions include very fast (<100 fs) charge separation with the formation of the P700+A0-A1 state in approximately one half of the RCs, the approximately 5-ps energy transfer from antenna Chl* to P700A0A1 in the remaining RCs, and approximately 25-ps formation of the secondary radical pair P700+A0A1-.

Primary light-energy conversion in tetrameric chlorophyll structure of photosystem II and bacterial reaction centers: II. Femto- and picosecond charge separation in PSII D1/D2/Cyt b559 complex

In Part I of the article, a review of recent data on electron-transfer reactions in photosystem II (PSII) and bacterial reaction center (RC) has been presented. In Part II, transient absorption difference spectroscopy with 20-fs resolution was applied to study the primary charge separation in PSII RC (DI/DII/Cyt b 559 complex) excited at 700 nm at 278 K. It was shown that the initial electron-transfer reaction occurs within 0.9 ps with the formation of the charge-separated state P680(+)Chl(D1)(-), which relaxed within 14 ps as indicated by reversible bleaching of 670-nm band that was tentatively assigned to the Chl(D1) absorption. The subsequent electron transfer from Chl(D1)(-) within 14 ps was accompanied by a development of the radical anion band of Pheo(D1) at 445 nm, attributable to the formation of the secondary radical pair P680(+)Pheo(D1)(-). The key point of this model is that the most blue Q(y) transition of Chl(D1) in RC is allowing an effective stabilization of separated charges. Although an alternative mechanism of charge separation with Chl(D1)* as a primary electron donor and Pheo(D1) as a primary acceptor can not be ruled out, it is less consistent with the kinetics and spectra of absorbance changes induced in the PSII RC preparation by femtosecond excitation at 700 nm.

Long-lived coherent oscillations of the femtosecond transients in cyanobacterial photosystem I

The pulsed excitation of electronic levels coupled to specific nuclear modes by a 26 fs laser pulse at 706 nm creates a wavepacket in the nuclear space of photopystem I (PS I) of Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 both in the ground state and in the one-exciton manifold. Fourier transform of transient decay curves shows several low frequency peaks. The most prominent Power Spectral Density (PSD) peaks are at omega = 49 cm(-1) and omega = 88 cm(-1). The peculiarity of the coherent wavepacket in the PS I of S. sp. strain PCC 6803 is the unique, long-lived 49 cm(-1) and 88 cm(-1) oscillations with decay times up to 10 ps. It was suggested that such a long-lived coherence is determined by a contribution of the ground state wavepacket. The dependence of these two PSD peaks on the probe wavelength resembles the profile of the transient absorption spectra of PS I. The pump-probe signal in the Soret region reflects the dynamics of the ground state wavepacket created by pulsed excitation of the Q(y)-band. It was shown that the multimode Brownian oscillator model allows a quantitative fit of the oscillatory patterns of the pump-probe signal to be obtained.

Evidence for the mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of the bacterial wall membrane at the TiO2 interface by ATR-FTIR and laser kinetic spectroscopy

The photocatalytic peroxidation of E. coli cell, lipo-polysaccharide (LPS), phosphatidyl-ethanolcholine (PE), and peptidoglycan (PGN) of the E. coli membrane wall has been investigated on TiO2 porous films by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The fast reactions of the photogenerated charge carriers in TiO2 with E. coli, LPS, and PE were monitored by laser kinetic spectroscopy. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy allowed the identification of E. coli, LPS, PE, and PGN as photocatalytic peroxidation products. The PGN was observed to be the most resistant membrane wall component. Shorter peroxidation times were observed for LPS and PE. Laser photolysis shows that E. coli, LPS, and PE compete in the scavenging of a surface trapped holes (h+) with the recombination reaction of h+ with the generated electrons (e-) within times > 50 ns. This scavenging leads to the formation of organic radicals initiating the radical chain peroxidation of E. coli, LPS, PE, and PE.
