Photofragmentation of C, F and S K-shell excited CF3SF5 studied by PEPICO and PIPICO spectroscopy

Fragmentation dynamics of nitrogen trifluoride induced by electron collision

The fragmentation dynamics of nitrogen trifluoride (NF₃) in collisions with a 500 eV electron is studied by using a momentum imaging spectrometer. The kinetic energy releases of two-body, three-body, and four-body fragmentation channels of NF₃ ^q+ (q = 2, 3) are investigated. The fragmentation dynamics of three-body, as well as four-body, dissociation channels is analyzed by the Dalitz plot and the Newton diagram. It is found that for all of the dissociation channels, the fragment including N atom (ion) always shares significant momenta, regardless of whether it is charged. For F atom, however, it is always emitted with negligible momenta.

Photoexcitation, photoionization, and photofragmentantion of CF3CF2CF2C(O)Cl using synchrotron radiation between 13 and 720 eV

The main inner shell ionization edges of gaseous CF3CF2CF2C(O)Cl, including Cl 2p, C 1s, O 1s, and F 1s, have been measured in Total Ion Yield (TIY) mode by using tunable synchrotron radiation, and several resonance transitions have been assigned with the help of quantum chemical calculations. Interestingly, resonance transitions observed in the C 1s region can be assigned to different carbon atoms in the molecule according to the degree of fluorine substitution. Ionic photofragmentation processes have been studied by time-of-flight mass spectrometry in the Photoelectron-Photoion-Coincidence (PEPICO) and Photoelectron-Photoion-Photoion-Coincidence (PEPIPICO) modes. These techniques revealed a "memory-lost" effect especially around the C 1s region, since the fragmentation events are independent of the energy range considered. Moreover, different fragmentation mechanisms were inferred from these spectra in the valence (13.0-21.0 eV) as well as in the inner (180.0-750.0 eV) electronic energy regions. The vibrational spectral features of CF3CF2CF2C(O)Cl have been interpreted in terms of a conformational equilibrium between two conformations (gauche and anti of the CC single bond with respect to the CCl one) at room temperature, as determined from quantum chemical calculations and the detailed analysis of the infrared spectrum.

Effect of fluoro substitution on the fragmentation of the K-shell excited/ionized pyridine studied by electron impact

Fragmentation of the pyridine ring followed by K-shell excitation/ionization has been studied with 2-fluoropyridine (2FPy) by electron impact. Ab initio molecular orbital (MO) calculations were also carried out to investigate the electronic states correlating with specific fragment ions. The fragment ions are produced characteristically at the N 1s edge, while the spectra observed at the F 1s and C 1s edges exhibit a small difference from that at the valence ionization. The production of the C(4)H(2)(+), C(4)H(3)(+) and C(4)H(2)F(+) ions indicates that the cleavage of the N-C6 and C2-C3 bonds or the N-C2 and C5-C6 bonds is likely to occur after the N 1s excitation/ionization. Ab initio MO calculations indicate that the former fission is likely to proceed through the n(N)(1)π(2)(1)π(3)(2) and n(N)(0)π(2)(2)π(3)(2) excited states of the parent molecular dication. On the other hand, the breakage of the N-C2 and C4-C5 bonds, which specifically proceeds at the N 1s edge for 2-methylpyridine, does not occur for 2FPy. The present calculation reveals that the products of this channel are unstable by the electronegativity of fluorine and that the relative energy of the Auger-final states of 2FPy is lowered by the reorganization and electron correlation effects.

Specific fragmentation of the K-shell excited/ionized pyridine derivatives studied by electron impact: 2-, 3- and 4-methylpyridine

Fragmentation of the pyridine ring upon K-shell excitation/ionization has been studied with gaseous 2-, 3- and 4-methylpyridine by the electron-impact method. Ab initio molecular orbital (MO) calculations were also carried out to explore electronic states correlating with specific fragments. Some specific fragmentation channels were identified from the ionic fragments enhanced characteristically at the N 1s edge. Yields of the C(2)HN(+) and C(5)H(5)(+)/C(5)H(6)(+) ions show that the fission of the N-C2 and C4-C5/C5-C6 bonds of the ring is likely to occur after the N 1s excitation and ionization. Ab initio MO calculations for the 2-methylpyridine molecule indicate that the dissociation channels to produce these ions are only accessible through the excited states of the parent molecular dication, which can be formed by Auger decays after the N 1s ionization. Fragment ions via hydrogen rearrangement are produced as well, but the rearrangement is not a phenomenon specific to the K-shell excitation/ionization.

F 1s spectroscopy and ionic fragmentation of trifluoropropyne

The F 1s excitation spectroscopy and ionic fragmentation of 3,3,3-trifluoro-1-propyne have been studied using synchrotron radiation and ion time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The total ion yield spectrum and photoionization branching ratios in the vicinity of the F 1s ionization threshold are reported. Core excited state calculations using the static exchange approximation are used to aid in the interpretation of the experimental results. The F 1s excitation spectrum consists of a number of broad overlapping bands below threshold, attributed to excitations to mixed σ*(C-F)/π*(C-C) molecular orbitals and unresolved Rydberg states, and a continuum shape resonance 12.5 eV above threshold. Ionic fragmentation following F 1s excitation or ionization results overwhelmingly in singly charged ionic fragments, primarily via cleavage of bonds to the fluorinated carbon atom adjacent to the core-excited atom.Key words: F 1s excitation, XANES, photoelectron-photoion coincidence, ionic fragmentation, static exchange approximation.

Data acquisition schemes for continuous two-particle time-of-flight coincidence experiments

Three data acquisition schemes for two-particle coincidence experiments with a continuous source are discussed. The single-start/single-stop technique, implemented with a time-to-pulse-height converter, results in a complicated spectrum and breaks down severely at high count rates. The single-start/multiple-stop setup, based on a time-to-digital converter and the first choice in today's similar coincidence experiments, performs significantly better at high count rates, but its performance is still hampered if the time-of-flight range is large, and the false coincidence background is variable if the event frequency and the collection efficiency of the starts are both high. A straightforward, multistart/multistop setup is proposed for coincidence experiments. By collecting all detector data, it ensures the highest signal-to-noise ratio, constant background, and fast data acquisition and can now be easily constructed with commercially available time-to-digital converters. Analytical and numerically evaluated formulas are derived to characterize the performance of each setup in a variety of environments. Computer simulated spectra are presented to illustrate the analytically predicted features of the various raw time-of-flight distributions obtained with each technique.
