Photochemical reactions of electron-deficient olefins with N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylbenzidine via photoinduced electron-transfer

Improved Oxidase Mimetic Activity by Praseodymium Incorporation into Ceria Nanocubes

Ceria nanocubes (NC) modified with increasing concentrations of praseodymium (5, 10, 15, and 20 mol %) have been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized Pr-modified ceria nanocubes exhibit an enhanced oxidase-like activity on the organic dye TMB within a wide range of concentrations and durations. The oxidase activity increases with increasing Pr amounts in Pr-modified ceria nanocubes within the investigated concentration range. Meanwhile, these Pr-modified ceria nanocubes also show higher reducibility than pure ceria nanocubes. The kinetics of their oxidase mimetic activity is fitted with the Michaelis-Menten equation. A mechanism has been proposed on how the Pr incorporation could affect the energy level of the bands in ceria and hence facilitate the TMB oxidation reaction. The presence of Pr³⁺ species on the surface also contributes to the increasing activity of the Pr-modified ceria nanocubes present higher oxidase activity than pure ceria nanocubes.

Influence of the electronic characteristics of N-donor ligands in the excited state of heteronuclear gold(I)-copper(I) systems

By reaction of the heterometallic gold-silver complexes [{AuAg(C(6)F(5))(2)(N≡C-Me)}(2)](n) or [{AuAg(C(6)Cl(5))(2)(N≡C-Me)}(2)](n) and CuCl in the presence of pyrimidine and different nitrile ligands (acetonitrile, benzonitrile, and cinnamonitrile), the heteronuclear complexes {[Au(C(6)X(5))(2)][Cu(L)(μ(2)-C(4)H(4)N(2))]}(n) (X = F and L = N≡C-Me (1), L = N≡C-Ph (2) or N≡C-CH═CH-Ph (3); X = Cl and L = N≡C-Me (4), N≡C-Ph (5), N≡C-CH═CH-Ph (6)) have been prepared. The crystal structures of complexes {[Au(C(6)X(5))(2)][Cu(L)(μ(2)-C(4)H(4)N(2))]}(n) (X = F; L = N≡C-CH═CH-Ph (3), X = Cl; L = N≡C-Ph (5)) have been determined by X-ray diffraction studies. The crystal structures of both complexes consists of polymeric chains formed by the repetition of [Au(C(6)X(5))(2)][Cu(L)(μ(2)-C(4)H(4)N(2))] units through copper-pyrimidine bonds. Complexes 1, 2, 4, and 5 are brightly luminescent in the solid state at room temperature and at 77 K with lifetimes in the microseconds range. These compounds are also luminescent in solution, displaying different photophysical behaviors depending on the donor characteristics of the solvents used. The distortion in the excited state allows an associative attack by donor solvents quenching one of the emitting excited states. DFT optimizations of the ground (S(0)) and lowest triplet excited state (T(1)) display the structure distortion of the complexes upon electronic excitation. The molecular orbitals involved in the electronic transitions responsible for the phosphorescence in the case of the complexes 1, 2, 4, and 5 are related to metal (gold-copper) to ligand (pyrimidine) charge transfer transitions, while in the case of the nonluminescent complexes 3 and 6, the nonradiative electronic transition arises from metal (gold-copper) to ligand (cinnamonitrile) charge transfer transitions.

Studies on Photoinduced H-Atom and Electron Transfer Reactions of o-Naphthoquinones by Laser Flash Photolysis

The quenching of the triplets of 1,2-naphthoquinone (NQ) and 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonic acid sodium salt (NQS) by various electron and H-atom donors was investigated by laser flash photolysis measurement in acetonitrile and benzene. The results showed that the reactivities and configurations of 3NQ* (3NQS*) are governed by solvent polarity. All the quenching rate constants (kq) measured in benzene are larger than those in acetonitrile. The SO3Na substituent at the C-4 position of NQS makes 3NQS* more reactive than 3NQ* in electron/H-atom transfer reactions. Large differences of kq values were discovered in H-atom transfer reactions for alcohols and phenols, which can be explained by different H-abstraction mechanisms. Detection of radical cations of amines/anilines in time-resolved transient absorption spectra confirms an electron transfer mechanism. Triplets are identified as precursors of formed radical anions of NQ and NQS in photoinduced reactions. The dependence of electron transfer rate constants on the free energy changes (DeltaG) was treated by using the Rehm-Weller equation. For the four anilines with different substituents on the para or meta position of amidocyanogen, good correlation between log kq values with Hammett sigma constants testifies the correctness of empirical Hammett equation. Charge density distributions, adiabatic ionization/affinity potentials and redox potentials of NQ (NQS) and some quenchers were studied by quantum chemistry calculation.
