Simulation of the photodetachment spectrum of the pyrrolide anion

The anion photoelectron spectrum and diabatization of tetrazolyl

The potential energy surface of tetrazolyl [cyclic (N4CH)] has a conical intersection seam between the two lowest-energy electronic states near the ground state minimum geometry. This work treats that molecule. The potential energy surfaces used in this study are based on a least-squares fitting procedure that includes ab initio energies, energy gradients, and derivative couplings described using polynomials up to fourth-order and ab initio data obtained from multireference configuration interaction wave functions. A five-electronic-state description was generated with a root mean square absolute energy error of 9.6 cm-1, compared to 326.8 cm-1 when only second-order terms were used. The time-independent multimode vibronic coupling in the KDC approximation was used to simulate and analyze the anion ultraviolet photoelectron spectrum of tetrazolide.

Unraveling the Photoelectron Spectrum of 1-Phospha-2,3,4-triazolate Anion, HCPN3-, A Theoretical Approach

The first five low-lying electronic states of HCPN₃ are probed through extensive ab initio electronic structure and quantum dynamics studies to reproduce the 193 nm photoelectron spectrum. Vibronic Hamiltonian is constructed and availed for time-dependent (TD) and time-independent (TI) quantum dynamical studies. The presence of numerous conical intersections (CIs) and crossings among electronic states yielded interesting nonadiabatic effects in the photoelectron bands of the overall spectrum. Moreover, the theoretical bands corresponding to five electronic states have reproduced all three experimental spectral bands. Among these, the first two bands originated due to a combination of four electronic states as predicted by previous studies. The third band corresponds to the fifth electronic state. The results calculated via TD and TI approaches exhibited satisfying agreement with the experimental results.

Dipole-Bound State, Photodetachment Spectroscopy, and Resonant Photoelectron Imaging of Cryogenically-Cooled 2-Cyanopyrrolide

Valence-bound anions with polar neutral cores can have diffuse dipole-bound excited states just below the electron detachment threshold. Because of the similarity in geometry and vibrational frequencies between the dipole-bound states (DBSs) and the corresponding neutrals, DBSs have been exploited as intermediate states to conduct resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), resulting in highly non-Franck-Condon photoelectron spectra via vibrational autodetachment and providing much richer vibrational information than conventional PES. Here, we report a photodetachment and high-resolution photoelectron imaging study of the 2-cyanopyrrolide anion, cooled in a cryogenic ion trap. The electron affinity of the 2-cyanopyrrolyl radical is measured to be 3.0981 ± 0.0006 eV (24 988 ± 5 cm^-1). A DBS is observed for 2-cyanopyrrolide at 240 cm^-1 below its detachment threshold using photodetachment spectroscopy. Twenty-three above-threshold vibrational resonances (Feshbach resonances) of the DBS are observed. Resonant PES is conducted at each Feshbach resonance, yielding a wealth of vibrational information about the 2-cyanopyrrolyl radical. Resonant two-photon PES confirms the s-like dipole-bound orbital and reveals a relatively long lifetime of the bound zero-point level of the DBS. Fundamental frequencies for 19 vibrational modes (out of a total of 24) are obtained for the cyanopyrrolyl radical, including six out-of-plane modes. The current work provides important spectroscopic information about 2-cyanopyrrolyl, which should be valuable for the study of this radical in combustion or astronomical environments.

Probing the Strong Nonadiabatic Interactions in the Triazolyl Radical Using Photodetachment Spectroscopy and Resonant Photoelectron Imaging of Cryogenically Cooled Anions

Although the adiabatic potential energy surfaces defined by the Born-Oppenheimer approximation are the cornerstones for understanding the electronic structure and spectroscopy of molecular systems, nonadiabatic effects due to the coupling of electronic states by nuclear motions are common in complex molecular systems. The nonadiabatic effects were so strong in the 1,2,3-triazolyl radical (C₂H₂N₃) that the photoelectron spectrum of the triazolide anion was rendered unassignable and could only be understood using nonadiabatic calculations, involving the four low-lying electronic states of triazolyl. Using photodetachment spectroscopy and resonant photoelectron imaging of cryogenically cooled anions, we are able to completely unravel the complex vibronic levels of the triazolyl radical. Photodetachment spectroscopy reveals a dipole-bound state for the triazolide anion at 172 cm^-1 below the detachment threshold and 32 vibrational Feshbach resonances. Resonant photoelectron imaging is conducted by tuning the detachment laser to each of the Feshbach resonances. Combining the photodetachment spectrum and the resonant photoelectron spectra, we are able to assign all 28 vibronic peaks resolved for the triazolyl radical. Fundamental frequencies for 12 vibrational modes of the ground state of the triazolyl radical are measured experimentally. The current study provides unprecedented experimental vibronic information, which will be valuable to verify theoretical models to treat nonadiabatic effects involving multiple electronic states.

Coupled Cluster Characterization of 1-, 2-, and 3-Pyrrolyl: Parameters for Vibrational and Rotational Spectroscopy

Pyrrolyl (C₄H₄N) is a nitrogen-containing aromatic radical that is a derivative of pyrrole (C₄H₅N) and is an important intermediate in the combustion of biomass. It is also relevant for chemistry in Titan's atmosphere and may be present in the interstellar medium. The lowest-energy isomer, 1-pyrrolyl, has been involved in many experimental and theoretical studies of the N-H photodissociation of pyrrole, yet it has only been directly spectroscopically detected via electron paramagnetic resonance and through the photoelectron spectrum of the pyrrolide anion, yielding three vibrational frequencies. No direct measurements of 2- or 3-pyrrolyl have been made, and little information is known from theoretical calculations beyond their relative energies. Here, we present an ab initio quantum chemical characterization of the three pyrrolyl isomers at the CCSD(T) level of theory in their ground electronic states, with an emphasis on spectroscopic parameters relevant for vibrational and rotational spectroscopy. Equilibrium geometries were optimized at the CCSD(T)/cc-pwCVTZ level of theory, and the quadratic, cubic, and partial quartic force constants were evaluated at CCSD(T)/ANO0 for analysis using second-order vibrational perturbation theory to obtain harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies. In addition, zero-point-corrected rotational constants, electronic spin-rotation tensors, and nuclear hyperfine tensors are calculated for rotational spectroscopy. Our computed structures and energies agree well with earlier density functional theory calculations, and spectroscopic parameters for 1-pyrrolyl are compared with the limited existing experimental data. Finally, we discuss strategies for detecting these radicals using rotational and vibrational spectroscopy on the basis of the calculated spectroscopic constants.

Compact Bases for Vibronic Coupling in Spectral Simulations: The Photoelectron Spectrum of Cyclopentoxide in the Full 39 Internal Modes

We report an algorithm to automatically generate compact multimode vibrational bases for the Köppel-Domcke-Cederbaum (KDC) vibronic coupling wave function used in spectral simulations of moderate-sized molecules. As a full quantum method, the size of the vibronic expansion grows exponentially with respect to the number of vibrational modes, necessitating compact bases for moderate-sized systems. The problem of generating such a basis consists of two parts: one is the choice of vibrational normal modes, and the other is the number of phonons allowed in each mode. A previously developed final-state-biased technique addresses the former part, and this work focuses on the latter part: proposing an algorithm for generating an optimal phonon distribution. By virtue of this phonon distribution, compact and affordable bases can be automatically generated for systems with on the order of 15 atoms. Our algorithm is applied to determine the nonadiabatic photoelectron spectrum of cyclopentoxide in the full 39 internal modes.

The simulated photoelectron spectrum of 1-propynide

The negative ion photoelectron spectrum of 1-propynide is computed by employing the multimode vibronic coupling approach. A three-state quasidiabatic Hamiltonian, H(d), is reported, which accurately represents the ab initio determined equilibrium geometries and harmonic frequencies of the ground X (2)A(1) state as well as the low-lying Jahn-Teller distorted components of the A (2)E excited state. It also reproduces both the minimum energy crossing point (MECP) on the symmetry-required (2)E(x)-(2)E(y) conical intersection seam and the MECP on the same symmetry (2)A(1)-(2)E(x) conical intersection seam. H(d) includes all terms through second order in internal coordinates for both the diagonal and off-diagonal blocks. It is centered at the (2)E(x)-(2)E(y) MECP and is determined using ab initio gradients and derivative couplings near both the (2)E(x)-(2)E(y) MECP and the X (2)A(1) equilibrium geometry. This construction is enabled by a recently reported normal equation based algorithm. The C(3v) symmetry of the system is used to significantly reduce the computational cost of the ab initio treatment. This H(d) is then expressed in a vibronic basis that is chosen for its ability to reduce the dimension of the vibronic expansion. The vibronic Hamiltonian matrix is diagonalized to obtain a negative ion photoelectron spectrum for 1-propynide-h(3). The determined spectrum compares favorably with previous spectroscopic results. In particular, the lines attributable to the (2)E state are found to be much weaker than those corresponding to the (2)A(1) state of 1-propynyl. This diminution of the (2)E state is attributable principally to the (2)E(x)-(2)A(1) conical intersection rather than an intrinsically small electronic transition moment for the production of the (2)E state.
