Abstract
![]()
We
report the first gas-phase vibrational spectra of the hydrocarbon
ions C3H+ and C3H2+. The ions were produced by electron impact ionization of
allene. Vibrational spectra of the mass-selected ions tagged with
Ne were recorded using infrared predissociation spectroscopy in a
cryogenic ion trap instrument using the intense and widely tunable
radiation of a free electron laser. Comparison of high-level quantum
chemical calculations and resonant depletion measurements revealed
that the C3H+ ion is exclusively formed in its
most stable linear isomeric form, whereas two isomers were observed
for C3H2+. Bands of the energetically
favored cyclic c-C3H2+ are in excellent
agreement with calculated anharmonic frequencies, whereas for the
linear open-shell HCCCH+ (2Πg) a detailed theoretical description of the spectrum remains challenging
because of Renner–Teller and spin–orbit interactions.
Good agreement between theory and experiment, however, is observed
for the frequencies of the stretching modes for which an anharmonic
treatment was possible. In the case of linear l-C3H+, small but non-negligible effects of the attached Ne on the
ion fundamental band positions and the overall spectrum were found.

Abstract
The spin-vibronic energy levels of the cyanoacetylene cation have been measured using the one-photon zero-kinetic energy (ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopic method. All three degenerate vibrational modes showing vibronic coupling, i.e., Renner-Teller (RT) effect, have been observed. All the splitting spin-vibronic energy levels of the fundamental H-C≡C bending vibration (v5) have been determined. The spin-vibronic energy levels of the degenerate vibrational modes have also been calculated using a diabatic model in which the harmonic terms as well as all the second-order vibronic coupling terms are used. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data and are used to assign the ZEKE spectrum. It is found that the RT effects for the H-(CC)-CN bending (v7) and the C-C≡N bending (v6) vibrations are weak, whereas they are strong for the H-C≡C bending (v5) vibration. The cross-mode RT couplings between any of the two degenerate vibrations are strong. The spin-orbit resolved fundamental vibrational energy levels of the C≡N stretching (v2) and C-H stretching (v1) vibrations have also been observed. The spin-orbit energy splitting of the ground state has been determined for the first time as 43 ± 2 cm(-1), and the ionization energy of HCCCN is found to be 93 903.5 ± 2 cm(-1).

Abstract
High-resolution anion photoelectron spectra of cryogenically cooled C5(-) clusters are reported using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy. We resolve vibronic transitions to the ν2 stretching mode and multiply excited ν5, ν6, and ν7 bending modes of neutral C5 with significantly higher accuracy than previous experiments. Weak transitions to Franck-Condon (FC) forbidden singly excited bending modes are made possible by Herzberg-Teller coupling between electronic states of the neutral cluster. In addition, we resolve vibrational fine structure corresponding to different angular momentum states of multiply excited bending modes. The observation of this multiplet structure, some of which is FC forbidden, is attributed to Renner-Teller coupling between vibrational levels in the C5(-) ground electronic state.

Abstract
In this study we employ the recently developed model for handling the Renner-Teller effect in Pi electronic states of six-atomic molecules with linear equilibrium geometry to calculate the vibronic spectrum in the X(2)Pi(u) electronic state of the C(6)(+) ion. The applied model Hamiltonian excludes the stretching vibrations and end-over-end rotations. On the other hand, it considers the interplay between the vibronic and spin-orbit couplings. The parameters determining the shape of the bending potential energy surfaces are computed by means of a Density functional theory, and the spin-orbit coupling constant by the Multireference CI program using state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) wavefunctions. The results of the present study are expected to motivate and help future experimental investigations on C(6)(+).
