Nonadiabatic quantum dynamics of Br2 in solid Ar: A four-dimensional study of the B to C state predissociation

Effective Phase Space Representation of the Quantum Dynamics of Vibrational Predissociation of the ArBr2(B,ν =16···25) Complex

We perform trajectory-based simulations of the vibrational predissociation of the ArBr₂(B,ν=16···25) van der Waals triatomic complex, constrained to the T-shape geometry. To this aim, we employ a 2-fold mapping of the quantum dynamics into classical-like dynamics in an extended phase space. The effective phase space comprises two distinct sets of degrees of freedom, namely a collection of coupled harmonic oscillators and an ensemble of quantum trajectories. The time evolution of these variables represent bound and unbound motions of the quantum system, respectively. Quantum trajectories are propagated within the interacting trajectory representation. The comparison between the lifetimes of the predissociating complexes computed using the trajectory-based approach and the experimental results available for the target systems indicates that the present method is competitive with wavepacket propagation techniques. The competition between several simultaneous vibrational relaxation pathways was found to have a direct impact on the time scales of vibrational predissociation. Likewise, the analysis of the time evolution of the trajectories reveals the existence of regions in the effective phase space where transitions to vibrational states of higher energy are more likely to occur. The size and location of these regions influence the transient vibrational distributions and therefore the computed lifetimes. Furthermore, the mechanisms of energy redistribution along the dissociation coordinate are analyzed.

Rotationally adiabatic pair interactions of para- and ortho-hydrogen with the halogen molecules F2, Cl2, and Br2

The present work is concerned with the weak interactions between hydrogen and halogen molecules, i.e., the interactions of pairs H2-X2 with X = F, Cl, Br, which are dominated by dispersion and quadrupole-quadrupole forces. The global minimum of the four-dimensional (4D) coupled cluster with singles and doubles and perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) pair potentials is always a T shaped structure where H2 acts as the hat of the T, with well depths (De) of 1.3, 2.4, and 3.1 kJ/mol for F2, Cl2, and Br2, respectively. MP2/AVQZ results, in reasonable agreement with CCSD(T) results extrapolated to the basis set limit, are used for detailed scans of the potentials. Due to the large difference in the rotational constants of the monomers, in the adiabatic approximation, one can solve the rotational Schrödinger equation for H2 in the potential of the X2 molecule. This yields effective two-dimensional rotationally adiabatic potential energy surfaces where pH2 and oH2 are point-like particles. These potentials for the H2-X2 complexes have global and local minima for effective linear and T-shaped complexes, respectively, which are separated by 0.4-1.0 kJ/mol, where oH2 binds stronger than pH2 to X2, due to higher alignment to minima structures of the 4D-pair potential. Further, we provide fits of an analytical function to the rotationally adiabatic potentials.

Vibrational relaxation of chloroiodomethane in cold argon

Electronically exciting the C-I stretch in the molecule chloroiodomethane CH2ClI embedded in a matrix of argon at 12 K can lead to an isomer, iso-chloroiodomethane CH2Cl-I, that features a chlorine iodine bond. By temporally probing the isomer at two different frequencies of 435 nm and 485 nm, multiple timescales for isomerization and vibrational energy relaxation were inferred [T. J. Preston, et al., J. Chem. Phys. 135, 114503 (2011)]. This relaxation is studied theoretically using molecular dynamics by considering 2 and 3 dimensional models. Multiple decay rate constants of the same order of magnitude as the experiment are observed. These decay rate constants are interpreted within the context of the Landau-Teller theory. Sensitivity of the decay rate constants on the bath and system parameters shed more light into the mechanism of vibrational energy relaxation.

Tracing, amplifying, and steering chromophore-bath coherences by ultrashort pulse trains

With a train of 5 phase controlled ultrashort pulses, we enhance a coherent vibronic transition to exceed a dominant incoherent background. The interference in the chromophore generates a spectral comb which is adjusted to a progression of internal Br2 vibrations coupled to phonons of the surrounding Ar lattice. It steers the mode-specific phase evolution of the system. The trains are generated by straightforward programing of the spectral comb in a pulse shaper unit. Excitations involving several hundred degrees of freedom remain coherent on a picosecond time scale.
