Abstract
In this study, an antidroplet flame retardant system based on FRPET (phosphorus-containing copolyester) is constructed with DOPO-POSS (polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane containing DOPO) as an additive flame retardant. It is demonstrated that DOPO-POSS has good dispersibility at a lower amount. When the amount of DOPO-POSS is 9 wt %, the residual char of DOPO-POSS/FRPET at 700 °C increases to 23.56 from 18.16% of FRPET, and the maximum thermal weight loss rate also reduces. What is more is that the limiting oxygen index increases to 33 from 26% of FRPET. The flame burning time is shortened to 4.95 from 20.8 s, the phenomenon of self-extinguishing of the fire occurs, and the vertical combustion level is increased from V-2 to V-0. Compared with FRPET, the peak of the heat release rate decreases by 66.0%, the total heat release decreases by 32.4%, the flame retardancy index (FRI) reaches an excellent value, and the condensed-phase products significantly improve. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDX), thermogravimetric-FTIR (TG-FTIR), and pyrolysis-gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) results indicate that DOPO-POSS contributes to the formation of char layers and decomposes to generate free radicals with a quenching effect. In a word, DOPO-POSS is an effective radical trapper and charring agent for PET and exerts a flame retardancy effect in gaseous and condensed phases simultaneously.

Phosphorylated Metal-Organic Framework for Reducing Fire Hazards of Poly(Methyl Methacrylate). Polymers (Basel) 2022; 14:polym14224871. [PMID: 36432999 PMCID: PMC9697107 DOI: 10.3390/polym14224871] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/19/2022] [Revised: 11/04/2022] [Accepted: 11/08/2022] [Indexed: 11/16/2022] Open
Abstract
The low fire safety performance (flame retardant and antistatic properties) of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has severely limited practical applications. Here, a phosphorylated Zn-based metal-organic framework (ZIF-8-P) is employed as an effective flame retardant and antistatic agent to reduce the fire risk of PMMA. Encouragingly, the as-prepared PMMA/ZIF-8-P composite demonstrated not merely better mechanical properties (e.g., a rise of ca. 136.9% and 175.0% in the reduced modulus and hardness; a higher storage modulus), but also efficient fire safety properties (e.g., lower surface resistance; a decrease of ca. 73.1% in the peak heat release rate; a lower amount of total pyrolysis products), surpassing those of pure PMMA and a PMMA/ZIF-8 composite without phytic acid modification. Mechanism analysis is conducted to reveal the critical role of catalytic charring, char reinforcing, and the dilution of nonflammable gases from ZIF-8 additives during the combustion and pyrolysis process. Our study paves a promising way to achieve high performance PMMA composites.

Abstract

An optical control
of many working optoelectronic systems (real-time
sensors, optical modulators, light amplifiers, or phase retarders)
giving efficient optical gain or remote signal modulation is currently
included as scientifically and industrially interesting. In here,
an oxazolone derivative as the multifunctional organic system is given
in this contribution. The molecule possesses a stilbene group and
an oxazolone heteroatomic ring, which implies effective refractive
index manipulation and multimode lasing action, respectively. The
light modulation is repeatable and stable, also in the hundreds of
Hz regime. On the other hand, the amplified optical signal can be
easily generated by an external optical pumping source. Thus, signal
control is fully available, as is read-in and read-out of the information
in real time. Furthermore, this third-order, nonlinear, optical phenomenon
using a third harmonic generation technique was also observed. We
discovered that only by changing the energy and time regime of the
supplied optical signal is the optical or nonlinear optical response
observed. Two heteroenergetic molecular states (trans (E) and cis (Z)) can efficiently operate in modern multifunctional optoelectronic
systems, which can provide and generate an optical signal. Such functionalities
are commonly used in all-optical photonic switchers and logic gates
and can be utilized in optical-core networks and computers.

Abstract
Theoretical studies of molecular structure and electric charge distribution were carried out for three epoxy compounds with different mesogenic cores. The compounds exhibit a nematic phase and form polymer networks that are potential bases for various composites. Results were compared to analogous materials with non-polar chains. A customized process involving geometry optimization of a series of conformations was employed to greatly increase likelihood of reaching global energy minimum for each molecule. All computations used Density Functional Theory (DFT) electron correlation model with the B3LYP hybrid functional. Molecular structure calculations yielded several parameters, including the magnitude and direction of the dipole moment, polarizability (α), first hyperpolarizability (β), and highest-occupied/lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energies. These parameters can help predict electronic properties of the nematic phase and the polymer network and assess their predisposition for application in electrooptical devices. In particular, the magnitude and direction of the dipole moment determine molecular alignment of liquid crystal phases in electric field, which enables controlling molecular order also in cured networks. Theoretical results were supplemented with observations of the nematics and their behavior in electric field. It was demonstrated for the studied compounds that a change in aliphatic chain polarity helps preserve and reinforce perpendicular alignment of molecules induced by electric field.

Synthetic Routes to Silsesquioxane-Based Systems as Photoactive Materials and Their Precursors. Polymers (Basel) 2019; 11:polym11030504. Abstract
Over the past two decades, organic optoelectronic materials have been considered very promising. The attractiveness of this group of compounds, regardless of their undisputable application potential, lies in the possibility of their use in the construction of organic–inorganic hybrid materials. This class of frameworks also considers nanostructural polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) with “organic coronae” and precisely defined organic architectures between dispersed rigid silica cores. A significant number of papers on the design and development of POSS-based organic optoelectronic as well as photoluminescent (PL) materials have been published recently. In view of the scientific literature abounding with numerous examples of their application (i.e., as OLEDs), the aim of this review is to present efficient synthetic pathways leading to the formation of nanocomposite materials based on silsesquioxane systems that contain organic chromophores of complex nature. A summary of stoichiometric and predominantly catalytic methods for these silsesquioxane-based systems to be applied in the construction of photoactive materials or their precursors is given.
