A new potential energy surface and state-to-state quantum dynamics of the Li + HF → H + LiF reaction

Li + HF and Li + HCl Reactions Revisited I: QCT Calculations and Simulation of Experimental Results

The Li + HF and Li + HCl reactions share some common features. They have the same kinematics, relatively small barrier heights, bent transition states, and are both exothermic when the zero point energy is considered. Nevertheless, the pioneering crossed beam experiments by Lee and co-workers in the 80s (Becker et al., J. Chem. Phys. 1980, 73, 2833) revealed that the dynamics of the two reactions differ significantly, especially at low collision energies. In this work, we present theoretical simulations of their results in the laboratory frame (LAB), based on quasiclassical trajectories and obtained using accurate potential energy surfaces. The calculated LAB angular distributions and time-of-flight spectra agree well with the raw experimental data, although our simulations do not reproduce the experimentally derived center-of-mass (CM) differential cross section and velocity distributions. The latter were derived by forward convolution fitting under the questionable assumption that the CM recoil velocity and scattering angle distribution were uncoupled, while our results show that the coupling between them is relevant. Some important insights into the reaction mechanism discussed in the article by Becker et al. had not been contrasted with those that can be extracted from the theoretical results. Among them, the correlation between the angular momenta involved in the reactions has also been examined. Given the kinematics of both systems, the reagent orbital angular momentum, l , is almost completely transformed into the rotation of the product diatom, j'. However, contrary to the coplanar mechanism proposed in the original paper, we find that the initial and final relative orbital angular momenta are not necessarily parallel. Both reactions are found to be essentially direct, although about 15% of the LiFH complexes live longer than 200 fs.

Current Status of the X + C2H6 [X ≡ H, F(2P), Cl(2P), O(3P), OH] Hydrogen Abstraction Reactions: A Theoretical Review

This paper is a detailed review of the chemistry of medium-size reactive systems using the following hydrogen abstraction reactions with ethane, X + C₂H₆ → HX + C₂H₅; X ≡ H, F(²P), Cl(²P), O(³P) and OH, and focusing attention mainly on the theoretical developments. These bimolecular reactions range from exothermic to endothermic systems and from barrierless to high classical barriers of activation. Thus, the topography of the reactive systems changes from reaction to reaction with the presence or not of stabilized intermediate complexes in the entrance and exit channels. The review begins with some reflections on the inherent problems in the theory/experiment comparison. When one compares kinetics or dynamics theoretical results with experimental measures, one is testing both the potential energy surface describing the nuclei motion and the kinetics or dynamics method used. Discrepancies in the comparison may be due to inaccuracies of the surface, limitations of the kinetics or dynamics methods, and experimental uncertainties that also cannot be ruled out. The paper continues with a detailed review of some bimolecular reactions with ethane, beginning with the reactions with hydrogen atoms. The reactions with halogens present a challenge owing to the presence of stabilized intermediate complexes in the entrance and exit channels and the influence of the spin-orbit states on reactivity. Reactions with O(³P) atoms lead to three surfaces, which is an additional difficulty in the theoretical study. Finally, the reactions with the hydroxyl radical correspond to a reactive system with ten atoms and twenty-four degrees of freedom. Throughout this review, different strategies in the development of analytical potential energy surfaces describing these bimolecular reactions have been critically analyzed, showing their advantages and limitations. These surfaces are fitted to a large number of ab initio calculations, and we found that a huge number of calculations leads to accurate surfaces, but this information does not guarantee that the kinetics and dynamics results match the experimental measurements.

Quantum Wave Packet Treatment of Cold Nonadiabatic Reactive Scattering at the State-To-State Level

Cold and ultracold collisions are dominated by quantum effects, such as resonances, tunneling, and nonadiabatic transitions between different electronic states. Due to the extremely long de Broglie wavelength in such processes, quantum reactive scattering is most conveniently characterized using the time-independent close-coupling (TICC) methods. However, the TICC approach is difficult for systems with a large number of channels because of its steep numerical scaling laws. Here, a recently proposed quantum wave packet (WP) approach for solving adiabatic reactive scattering problems at low collision energies is extended to include nonadiabatic transitions. To impose the outgoing boundary conditions, the total scattering wavefunction is split into three parts, the interaction, the asymptotic, and the long-range regions. Each region is associated with a different set of basis functions, which could be optimized separately. In this way, an extremely long grid can be used to accommodate the characteristic long de Broglie wavelengths in the scattering coordinate. The better numerical scaling laws of the WP approach have the potential for handling larger nonadiabatic reactive systems at low temperatures in the future.

Time-dependent quantum mechanical wave packet dynamics

Starting from a model study of the collinear (H, H₂) exchange reaction in 1959, the time-dependent quantum mechanical wave packet (TDQMWP) method has come a long way in dealing with systems as large as Cl + CH₄. The fast Fourier transform method for evaluating the second order spatial derivative of the wave function and split-operator method or Chebyshev polynomial expansion for determining the time evolution of the wave function for the system have made the approach highly accurate from a practical point of view. The TDQMWP methodology has been able to predict state-to-state differential and integral reaction cross sections accurately, in agreement with available experimental results for three dimensional (H, H₂) collisions, and identify reactive scattering resonances too. It has become a practical computational tool in predicting the observables for many A + BC exchange reactions in three dimensions and a number of larger systems. It is equally amenable to determining the bound and quasi-bound states for a variety of molecular systems. Just as it is able to deal with dissociative processes (without involving basis set expansion), it is able to deal with multi-mode nonadiabatic dynamics in multiple electronic states with equal ease. We present an overview of the method and its strength and limitations, citing examples largely from our own research groups.
