Initial degradation mechanism of salicylic acid via electrochemical process

Oxidation of Mesalamine under Phenoloxidase- or Peroxidase-like Enzyme Catalysis

Mesalamine, also called 5-ASA (5-aminosalicylic acid), is a largely used anti-inflammatory agent and is a main choice to treat Ulcerative Colitis. This report is aimed to investigate enzymatic processes involved in the oxidation of mesalamine to better understand some of its side-effects. Oxidation with oxygen (catalyzed by ceruloplasmin) or with hydrogen peroxide (catalyzed by peroxidase or hemoglobin) showed that these oxidases, despite their different mechanisms of oxidation, could recognize mesalamine as a substrate and trigger its oxidation to a corresponding quinone-imine. These enzymes were chosen because they may recognize hydroquinone (a p-diphenol) as substrate and oxidize it to p-benzoquinone and that mesalamine, as a p-aminophenol, presents some similarities with hydroquinone. The UV-Vis kinetics, FTIR and 1H NMR supported the hypothesis of oxidizing mesalamine. Furthermore, mass spectrometry suggested the quinone-imine as reaction product. Without enzymes, the oxidation process was very slow (days and weeks), but it was markedly accelerated with the oxidases, particularly with peroxidase. Cyclic voltammetry supported the hypothesis of the oxidative process and allowed a ranking of susceptibility to oxidizing mesalamine in comparison with other oxidizable drug molecules with related structures. The susceptibility to oxidation was higher for mesalamine, in comparison with Tylenol (acetaminophen) and with aspirin (salicylic acid).

Cu/Nb2O5, Fe/Nb2O5 and Cu-Fe/Nb2O5 applied in salicylic acid degradation: Parameters studies and photocatalytic activity

This study describes the synthesis of Cu/Nb₂O₅, Fe/Nb₂O₅, and Cu-Fe/Nb₂O₅ catalysts obtained by incorporating copper and/or iron metals into niobium pentoxide (Nb₂O₅). The new materials were characterized by the following techniques: Thermogravimetric Analysis (TA), surface and pore analysis, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The catalyst was applied in the photocatalytic degradation of salicylic acid (SA). The influence of different parameters (calcined temperature, pH, and metal addition) on the photocatalytic reaction was evaluated. The results indicated that catalysts containing copper were more active and pH influenced the SA degradation process. SA removal results indicated that Cu/Nb₂O₅ photocatalyst presented a 1.5 fold higher degradation after 120 min in comparison to Cu-Fe/Nb₂O₅ and 4.6 fold higher than Fe/Nb₂O₅ catalyst, all them calcined at 400 °C. In tests carried out in the presence of formic acid, increasing the pH from about 3 to 7 allowed an almost 3.4-fold increase in SA degradation for the Cu-Fe/Nb₂O₅ catalyst calcined at 400 °C.

Removal of salicylic acid by electrochemical processes using stainless steel and platinum anodes

Salicylic acid is an important pharmaceutic and widely used in plant hormones and personal care products. Peroxicoagulation (PC) method has recently been employed in treatment of various pollutants. In general, carbon-based cathode materials such as graphite and carbon fiber are used for in situ H₂O₂ production and stainless steel (SS316-L) anode for low iron production in PC studies as an efficient system modification. This study was conducted to investigate salicylic acid removal efficiency of electrochemical processes. Stainless steel was used as anode in this study. It was believed that the oxidation effect of stainless steel could be responsible for partial removal of salicylic acid. In this study, stainless steel anode and graphite or carbon fiber cathodes were employed in PC treatments for removing salicylic acid from aqueous solution, and some model trials were also made to investigate the in-situ Fe²⁺ and H₂O₂ production performance. Present findings revealed a total organic carbon (TOC) removal of 30.5% and salicylic acid removal of 69.5% at optimized conditions. The EF system modification used in the study can be proposed as an easy, low-cost and effective treatment alternative for treatment of pharmaceutical industry wastes such as salicylic acid.
