The Stabilization of Three-Coordinate Formal Mn(0) Complex with NHC and Alkene Ligation

Pushing the Limits of Organometallic Redox Chemistry with an Isolable Mn(-I) Dianion

We report an incredibly reducing and redox-active Mn-I dianion, [Mn(CO)3(Ph2B(tBuNHC)2)]2- (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene), furnished via 2e- reduction of the parent 16e- MnI complex with Na0 or K0. Cyclic voltammograms show a Mn0/-I redox couple at -3.13 V vs Fc+/0 in tetrahydrofuran (THF), -3.06 V in 1,2-dimethoxyethane, and -2.85 V in acetonitrile. The diamagnetic Mn-I dianion is stable in solution and solid-state at room temperature, tolerating a wide range of countercations ([M(2.2.2)crypt]+, [M(18-crown-6)]+, [nBu4N]+; M = Na, K). Countercation identity does not significantly alter 13C NMR spectral signatures with [nBu4N]+ and Na+, suggesting minimal ion pairing in solution. IR spectroscopy reveals a significant decrease in CO stretching frequencies from MnI to Mn-I (ca. 240 cm-1), consistent with a drastic increase in electron density at Mn. State-of-the-art DFT calculations are in excellent agreement with the observed IR spectral data. Moreover, the Mn-I dianion behaves as a chemical reductant, smoothly releasing 1e- or 2e- to regenerate the oxidized Mn0 or MnI species in solution. The reducing potential of [Mn(CO)3(Ph2B(tBuNHC)2)]2- surpasses the naphthalenide anion in THF (-3.09 V) and represents one of the strongest isolable chemical redox agents.

Site-Isolated Rhodium(II) Metalloradicals Catalyze Olefin Hydrofunctionalization

Rh(II) porphyrin complexes display pronounced metal-centered radical character and the ability to activate small molecules under mild conditions, but catalysis with Rh(II) porphyrins is extremely rare. In addition to facile dimerization, Rh(II) porphyrins readily engage in kinetically and thermodynamically facile reactions involving two Rh(II) centers to generate stable Rh(III)-X intermediates that obstruct turnover in thermal catalysis. Here we report site isolation of Rh(II) metalloradicals in a MOF host, which not only protects Rh(II) metalloradicals against dimerization, but also allows them to participate in thermal catalysis. Access to PCN-224 or PCN-222 in which the porphyrin linkers are fully metalated by Rh(II) in the absence of any accompanying Rh(0) nanoparticles was achieved via the first direct MOF synthesis with a linker containing a transition-metal alkyl moiety, followed by Rh(III)-C bond photolysis.

Reductive Retrocyclization of a Mangana(II)cyclopentasilane to Form Manganese(0) Bis(η2-disilene) Complexes

Ligand-exchange reactions on a mangana(II)cyclopentasilane complex that contains two THF ligands with aryl isocyanides led to the formation of manganese(0) bis(η2-disilene) complexes via a retrocyclization. In stark contrast, ligand-exchange reactions with CNtBu, an N-heterocyclic carbene, or pyridine-based ligands furnished manganese(II) complexes wherein the manganacyclopentasilane framework remained intact. The thermolysis of the obtained bis(η2-disilene) complex in the presence of mesityl isocyanide led to the formation of a cyclotetrasilane via the formal dimerization of the two η2-disilene moieties. The insertion of a mesityl isocyanide into the Mn-Siβ bond results in the formation of a manganese(II) complex supported by a [SiCSi]-type tridentate ligand scaffold.

A one-pot reduction route to bimetallic manganese 1,8-naphthyridine complexes

Reaction of the dinucleating ligand 2,7-bis(6-methyl-2-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine (MeL) with the MnI and MnII precursors MnBr(CO)5 and MnCl2 resulted in the formation of the monometallic complexes [MnBr(CO)3(MeL)] (1) and [MnCl2(MeL)] (3). In both cases, formation of bimetallic manganese complexes could be achieved by reduction with KC8, yielding the carbonyl-bridged complex [Mn2(CO)6(MeL)] (2) and the helicate complex [Mn2(MeL)2] (4), respectively. EPR results demonstrate that 4 represents a novel, weakly antiferromagnetically coupled homovalent dimer (J = -0.85 cm-1). The two formally Mn0 ions are both high spin (S = 3/2) and exhibit a zero-field splitting of ≈1 cm-1, suggesting reduction of the complex is substantially ligand centered, and may be better described as a MnII complex coupled to two open shell singlet ligands [MnII2(MeL2-)2]. X-ray crystallography, UV-Vis spectroscopy and DFT analysis support this finding.

Organic Photovoltaic Catalyst with σ-π Anchor for High-Performance Solar Hydrogen Evolution

Efficient in situ deposition of metallic cocatalyst, like zero-valent platinum (Pt), on organic photovoltaic catalysts (OPCs) is the prerequisite for their high catalytic activities. Here we develop the OPC (Y6CO), by introducing carbonyl in the core, which is available to σ-π coordinate with transition metals, due to the high-energy empty π* orbital of carbonyl. Y6CO exhibits a stronger capability to anchor Pt species and reduce them to metallic state, resulting in more Pt⁰ deposition, relative to the control OPC without the central σ-π anchor. Single-component and heterojunction nanoparticles (NPs) employing Y6CO show enhanced average hydrogen evolution rates of 230.98 and 323.22 mmol h^-1  g_[OPC] ^-1 , respectively, under AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm^-2 for 10 h, and heterojunction NPs yield the external quantum efficiencies of ca. 10 % in 500-800 nm. This work demonstrates that σ-π anchoring is one efficient strategy for integrating metallic cocatalyst and OPC for high-performance photocatalysis.

A bis(silylene)pyridine pincer ligand can stabilize mononuclear manganese(0) complexes: facile access to isolable analogues of the elusive d7-Mn(CO)5 radical

Using the potentially tridentate N,N'-bis(N-heterocyclic silylene)pyridine [SiNSi] pincer-type ligand, 2,6-N,N'-diethyl-bis[N,N'-di-tert-butyl(phenylamidinato)silylene] diaminopyridine, led to the first isolable bis(silylene)pyridine-stabilized manganese(0) complex, {κ3-[SiNSi]Mn(dmpe)} 4 (dmpe = (Me2P)2C2H4), which represents an isolobal 17 VE analogue of the elusive Mn(CO)5 radical. The compound is accessible through the reductive dehalogenation of the corresponding dihalido (SiNSi)Mn(ii) complexes 1 (Cl) and 2 (Br) with potassium graphite. Exposing 4 towards the stronger π-acceptor ligands CO and 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide afforded the related Mn(0) complexes κ2-[SiNSi]Mn(CO)3 (5) and κ3-[SiNSi]Mn(CNXylyl)2(κ1-dmpe) (6), respectively. Remarkably, the stabilization of Mn(0) in the coordination sphere of the [SiNSi] ligand favors the d7 low-spin electronic configuration, as suggested by EPR spectroscopy, SQUID measurements and DFT calculations. The suitability of 4 acting as a superior pre-catalyst in regioselective hydroboration of quinolines has also been demonstrated.

A redox-active Mn(0) dicarbene metalloradical

A rare redox-active Mn(0) dicarbene anion with solvent-dependent electrochemical behaviour has been synthesized and thoroughly characterized.

Zeise, Liebig, Jensen, Hückel, Dewar, and the Olefin π-Complex Bonds

Zeise's salt, KPt(C₂ H₄ )Cl₃ , was the first characterized organometallic compound; it was also the first olefin π-complex. It was published in 1825-1830 in the middle of a fight between Dumas on the one hand and Berzelius and Liebig on the other, who defended the etherin (ethylene) and radical theories, respectively. Although Zeise's formulation as a compound containing ethylene was vindicated, the fight went on for many years. This was a time when the theories of organic chemistry were being developed, before any clear understanding of the nature of molecules, bonding, and structure. Zeise thought of the structure of his salt as a product of the addition of PtCl₂ to ethylene. Jensen assumed a central bonding to ethylene but needed theoretical assistance to explain it. His attempt to obtain such an explanation from Hückel failed, and it was Dewar who explained the nature of π-complexes in molecular orbital terms in 1951.

Three-Coordinate Rhodium Complexes in Low Oxidation States

The isolation of simultaneously low-coordinate and low-valent compounds is a timeless challenge for preparative chemists. This work showcases the preparation and full characterization of tri-coordinate rhodium(-I) and rhodium(0) complexes as well as a rare rhodium(I) complex. Reduction of [{Rh(μ-Cl)(IPr)(dvtms)}₂ ] (1, IPr=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolyl-2-ylidene; dvtms=divinyltetramethyldisiloxane) with KC₈ gave the trigonal complexes K[Rh(IPr)(dvtms)] and [Rh(IPr)(dvtms)], whereas the cation [Rh(IPr)(dvtms)]⁺ results from their oxidation or by abstraction of chloride from 1 with silver salts. The paramagnetic Rh⁰ complex is a unique fully metal-centered radical with the unpaired electron in the d_z2 orbital. The Rh(-I) complex reacts with PPh₃ with replacement of the NHC ligand, and behaves as a nucleophile, which upon reaction with [AuCl(PPh₃ )] generates the trigonal pyramidal complex [(IPr)(dvtms)Rh-Au(PPh₃ )] with a metal-metal bond between two d¹⁰ metal centers.

Three-Coordinate Formal Cobalt(0), Iron(0), and Manganese(0) Complexes with Persistent Carbene and Alkene Ligation

Low-coordinate transition-metal species, i.e., metal species with coordination numbers of less than 4, represent a category of ubiquitous reactive intermediates in metal-catalyzed reactions that take place in solution, in metalloenzymes, on supported nanomaterials and single-atom catalysts, and so on. While reactive intermediates are usually transient and hard to isolate, which makes detailed investigation challenging, molecular representatives of low-coordinate transition-metal intermediates can be synthesized by the judicious use of supporting ligands, allowing detailed study of their inherent chemical and physical properties. By the use of bulky nitrogen- and oxygen-based anionic ligands, plenty of three- and two-coordinate group 4-10 metal complexes with the oxidation states of the metal centers being +3, + 2, and +1 have been prepared and subjected to extensive study. Much less known are low-coordinate zero-valent metal complexes, and knowledge about them had been restricted to group 10 metal complexes until very recently. In this Account, we summarize the studies of the synthesis, spectroscopic features, electronic structures, and reactivities of three-coordinate formal cobalt(0), iron(0), and manganese(0) complexes with persistent carbene and alkene ligation. The introduction of the π-accepting alkene ligands 1,3-divinyl-1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (dvtms) and vinyltrimethylsilane (vtms) into the reduction reactions of MCl₂ (M = Co, Fe, Mn) with persistent carbenes and alkaline metals effectively suppresses ligand C-H bond activation reactions, leading to the successful preparation of three-coordinate formal cobalt(0), iron(0), and manganese(0) complexes LM(η²:η²-dvtms), LM(η²-vtms)₂, and L₂M(η²-vtms) (M = Co, Fe, Mn; L = N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC), cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (cAAC)). These three-coordinate metal complexes feature pronounced back-donation from the filled metal 3d orbitals to the alkene π* orbital(s), resulting in electronic configurations of (d_xy+π_alkene^*)²(d_x²-y²+π'_alkene^*)²(d_z²,d_xz,d_yz)ⁿ (the coordination plane was chosen as the xy plane; n = 5, 4, and 3 for Co, Fe, and Mn, respectively) for the bis(alkene) complexes LM(η²:η²-dvtms) and LM(η²-vtms)₂. The alkene ligands in the low-coordinate formal zero-valent metal complexes are amenable to undergo ligand-exchange reactions with better π-accepting ligands. In reactions with organic azides, hydrosilanes, nitrosoarenes, alkynes, etc., the alkene ligands dissociate from the metal coordination sphere, and three-coordinate formal zero-valent metal complexes function as synthons of L_nM⁰ (L = NHC, cAAC; n = 1, 2; M = Co, Fe, Mn) to perform redox reactions with these substrates, affording divalent and tetravalent cobalt, iron, or manganese complexes. These electronic structure and reactivity features hint at the potential of low-coordinate zero-valent group 7-9 metal complexes for the development of new 3d metal catalysts and magnetic materials.

Three-Coordinate Iron(0) Complexes with N-Heterocyclic Carbene and Vinyltrimethylsilane Ligation: Synthesis, Characterization, and Ligand Substitution Reactions

Low-coordinate iron(0) species are implicated as intermediates in a range of iron-catalyzed organic transformations. Isolable iron(0) complexes with coordination numbers of less than four, however, are rarely known. In continuing with our interests in three-coordinate iron(0) complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and alkene ligation, we report herein the synthesis and ligand substitution reactivity of three-coordinate iron(0) complexes featuring monodentate alkene ligands, [(NHC)Fe(η²-vtms)₂] (vtms = vinyltrimethylsilane, NHC = 1,3-bis(2',6'-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene (IPr), 1; 1,3-bis(2',6'-diisopropylphenyl)-4,5-tetramethylene-imidazol-2-ylidene (cyIPr), 2; 1,3-bis(2',6'-diisopropylphenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-1,3-diazepin-2-ylidene (7-IPr), 3). Complexes 1-3 were synthesized from the one-pot reactions of ferrous dihalides with the N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-substituted NHC ligands, vtms, and KC₈. Reactivity study of 1 revealed its facile ligand substitution reactions with terminal aryl alkynes, ketones, isocyanides, and CO, by which iron(0) complexes [(IPr)Fe(η²-HCCAr)] (Ar = Ph, 5; p-CH₃C₆H₄, 6; 3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃, 7), [(IPr)Fe(η²-OCPh₂)₂] (8), [(IPr)Fe(CNR)₄] (R = 2,6-Me₂C₆H₃, 9; Bu^t, 10), and (IPr)Fe(CO)₄ (11) were prepared in good yields. These iron(0) complexes have been characterized by ¹H NMR, solution magnetic susceptibility measurement, single-crystal X-ray diffraction study, ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Characterization data and computational studies suggest S = 1 ground-spin states for three-coordinate iron(0) complexes 1-3 and 5-8 and S = 0 ground states for 9-11. Theoretical studies on the three-coordinate complexes 1, 6, and 8 indicated pronounced metal-to-ligand backdonation from occupied Fe 3d orbitals to the π* orbitals of the C═C, C≡C, and C═O moieties of the π ligands. In addition, 1 proved an effective precatalyst for the cyclotrimerization reaction of alkynes.
