Atomically dispersed Ni induced by ultrahigh N-doped carbon enables stable sodium storage

Pentafluoro(phenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene Stabilizes Electrode/Electrolyte Interfaces for Sodium-Ion Pouch Cells of 145 Wh Kg-1

Sodium-ion batteries are competitive candidates for large-scale energy storage batteries due to the abundant sodium resource. However, the electrode interface in the conventional electrolyte is unstable, deteriorating the cycle life of the cells. Introducing functional electrolyte additives can generate stable electrode interfaces. Here, pentafluoro(phenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene (FPPN) serves as a functional electrolyte additive to stabilize the interfaces of the layered oxide cathode and the hard carbon anode. The fluorine substituting groups and the π-π conjugated ─PN─ structure decrease the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and increase the highest occupied molecular orbital of FPPN, respectively, realizing the preferential reduction and oxidization of FPPN on the anode and cathode simultaneously, which results in the formation of a uniform, ultrathin, and inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interlayer and cathode electrolyte interphase. The sodium-ion pouch cells of 5 Ah capacity rather than coin cells are assembled to evaluate the effect of FPPN. It can retain a high capacity of 4.46 Ah after 1000 cycles, corresponding to a low decay ratio of 0.01% per cycle. The pouch cell also achieves a high energy density of 145 Wh kg-1 and a wide operating temperature of -20-60 °C. This work can attract more attention to the rational electrolyte design for practical applications.

Controllable synthesis of electric double-layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance coupled porous carbon cathode material for zinc-ion hybrid capacitors

The designability of the porous structure of carbon material makes it a popular material for zinc-ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs). However, the micropore confinement effect leads to sluggish kinetics and is not well resolved yet. In this work, a pore-size controllable carbon material was designed to enhance ion accessibility. The experimental and calculated results revealed that suitable pore sizes and defects were beneficial to ion transfer/adsorption. Meanwhile, oxygen-containing functional groups could introduce a pseudocapacitance reaction. Its large specific surface area and interconnecting network structure could shorten the ion/electron transfer length to reach high ion adsorption capacity and fast kinetic behavior. When used as a zinc-ion hybrid capacitor cathode material, it showed 9.9 kW kg-1 power density and 100 W h kg-1 energy density. Even at 5 A g-1, after 50 000 cycles, there was still 93% capacity retention. Systemic ex situ characterization and first-principles calculations indicated that the excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to the electric double layer capacitance (EDLC) - pseudocapacitance coupled mechanism via the introduction of an appropriate amount of oxygen-containing functional groups. This work provides a robust design for pore engineering and mechanistic insights into rapid zinc-ion storage in carbon materials.

Enhanced Sodium Ion Batteries' Performance: Optimal Strategies on Electrolytes for Different Carbon-based Anodes

Carbon-based materials have emerged as promising anodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to the merits of cost-effectiveness and renewability. However, the unsatisfactory performance has hindered the commercialization of SIBs. During the past decades, tremendous attention has been put into enhancing the electrochemical performance of carbon-based anodes from the perspective of improving the compatibility of electrolytes and electrodes. Hence, a systematic summary of strategies for optimizing electrolytes between hard carbon, graphite, and other structural carbon anodes of SIBs is provided. The formulations and properties of electrolytes with solvents, salts, and additives added are comprehensively presented, which are closely related to the formation of solid electrolyte interface (SEI) and crucial to the sodium ion storage performance. Cost analysis of commonly used electrolytes has been provided as well. This review is anticipated to provide guidance in future rational tailoring of electrolytes with carbon-based anodes for sodium-ion batteries.

Synergetic Sn Incorporation-Zn Substitution in Copper-Based Sulfides Enabling Superior Na-Ion Storage

Transition-metal sulfides have been regarded as perspective anode candidates for high-energy Na-ion batteries. Their application, however, is precluded severely by either low charge storage or huge volumetric change along with sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, an effective synergetic Sn incorporation-Zn substitution strategy is proposed based on copper-based sulfides. First, Na-ion storage capability of copper sulfide is significantly improved via incorporating an alloy-based Sn element. However, this process is accompanied by sacrifice of structural stability due to the high Na-ion uptake. Subsequently, to maintain the high Na-ion storage capacity, and concurrently improve cycling and rate capabilities, a Zn substitution strategy (taking partial Sn sites) is carried out, which could significantly promote Na-ion diffusion/reaction kinetics and relieve mechanical strain-stress within the crystal framework. The synergetic Sn incorporation and Zn substitution endow copper-based sulfides with high specific capacity (≈560 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 ), ultrastable cyclability (80 k cycles with ≈100% capacity retention), superior rate capability up to 200 A g-1 , and ultrafast charging feature (≈4 s per charging with ≈190 mAh g-1 input). This work provides in-depth insights for developing superior anode materials via synergetic multi-cation incorporation/substitution, aiming at solving their intrinsic issues of either low specific capacity or poor cyclability.

Electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide by non-noble metal-doped g-C3N4 under a neutral electrolyte

Electrochemical oxygen reduction (ORR) for the production of clean hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an effective alternative to industrial anthraquinone methods. The development of highly active, stable, and 2e- ORR oxygen reduction electrocatalysts while suppressing the competing 4e- ORR pathway is currently the main challenge. Herein, bimetallic doping was successfully achieved based on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with the simultaneous introduction of K and Co, whereby 2D porous K-Co/CNNs nanosheets were obtained. The introduction of Co promoted the selectivity for H2O2, while the introduction of K not only promoted the formation of 2D nanosheets of g-C3N4, but also inhibited the ablation of H2O2 by K-Co/CNNs. Electrochemical studies showed that the selectivity of H2O2 in K-Co/CNNs under neutral electrolyte was as high as 97%. After 24 h, the H2O2 accumulation of K-Co/CNNs was as high as 31.7 g L-1. K-Co/CNNs improved the stability of H2O2 by inhibiting the ablation of H2O2, making it a good 2e- ORR catalyst and providing a new research idea for the subsequent preparation of H2O2.

Constructing S-deficient nickel sulfide/N-doped carbon interface for improved water splitting activity

Transition-metal sulfides are an intriguing family of electrocatalysts, yet their water-splitting applications are severely hampered by uncontrollable phase reconstruction and unsatisfactory in-service durability. Herein, we developed an efficient method to construct nickel sulfide (NiS) nanoarrays on foam nickel (NF) while being protected by highly N-doped formamide-derived carbon (termed NiS-NC@NF). The NiS nanocrystals were transformed in situ from highly dispersed Ni-N-C deposited on NF, ensuring a strong coupling effect that tunes the surface properties of NiS nanocrystals via the in situ constructed NiS/N-doped carbon interface. Electrochemical measurements reveal that very low overpotentials of 88.0 and 170.0 mV (vs. RHE) are required to achieve a current density of 10.0 mA cm-2 for hydrogen and oxygen evolution, respectively. The highly N-doped carbon matrix additionally regulates the potential-driven reconstruction of NiS in a controlled extent. Remarkably, the water electrolyzer built with NiS-NC@NF as both anode and cathode delivers an extremely low cell voltage of 1.51 V to initiate water splitting in the alkaline medium.

From Li to Na: Exploratory Analysis of Fe-Based Phosphates Polyanion-Type Cathode Materials by Mn Substitution

Both LiFePO4 (LFP) and NaFePO4 (NFP) are phosphate polyanion-type cathode materials, which have received much attention due to their low cost and high theoretical capacity. Substitution of manganese (Mn) elements for LFP/NFP materials can improve the electrochemical properties, but the connection between local structural changes and electrochemical behaviors after Mn substitution is still not clear. This study not only achieves improvements in energy density of LFP and cyclic stability of NFP through Mn substitution, but also provides an in-depth analysis of the structural evolutions induced by the substitution. Among them, the substitution of Mn enables LiFe0.5 Mn0.5 PO4 to achieve a high energy density of 535.3 Wh kg-1 , while NaFe0.7 Mn0.3 PO4 exhibits outstanding cyclability with 89.6% capacity retention after 250 cycles. Specifically, Mn substitution broadens the ion-transport channels, improving the ion diffusion coefficient. Moreover, LiFe0.5 Mn0.5 PO4 maintains a more stable single-phase transition during the charge/discharge process. The transition of NaFe0.7 Mn0.3 PO4 to the amorphous phase is avoided, which can maintain structural stability and achieve better electrochemical performance. With systematic analysis, this research provides valuable guidance for the subsequent design of high-performance polyanion-type cathodes.

Titanium Doping Induced the Suppression of Irreversible Phase Transformation at High Voltage for V-based Phosphate Cathodes of Na-Ion Batteries

Polyanionic material, specifically the NASICON-type material, is considered a promising cathode material for Na-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its stable structure and high operating voltage. Further, it improves the energy density correlated with the well utilization of all Na in the compound. For Na3 V2 (PO4 )2 F3 (NVPF), the extraction of the third Na, reported as the electrochemical inactivated, can be realized at a high voltage region while forming an irreversible tetragonal phase. In this study, we introduce Ti doping to the Na2 VTi(PO4 )2 F3 (NVTPF) material; we reveal that the Ti-doped NVTPF could effectively suppress the irreversible phase transformation, thus successfully harnessing Na in a wide voltage range. Experimental study discloses that the Ti-substituted Na2 VTi(PO4 )2 F3 could take up the Na+ from Amam phase to Cmc21 phase between 1.0 V and 4.8 V reversibly accounting for the 2 Na+ transportation that shows favorable Na+ kinetics and structural stability. Our research provides the strategy to stabilize the polyanion structure upon charging at a high voltage range and inspires the utilization of full sodium in the polyanionic materials, which could be considered as a material design for future conventional applications.

Bridging multiscale interfaces for developing ionically conductive high-voltage iron sulfate-containing sodium-based battery positive electrodes

Non-aqueous sodium-ion batteries (SiBs) are a viable electrochemical energy storage system for grid storage. However, the practical development of SiBs is hindered mainly by the sluggish kinetics and interfacial instability of positive-electrode active materials, such as polyanion-type iron-based sulfates, at high voltage. Here, to circumvent these issues, we proposed the multiscale interface engineering of Na_2.26Fe_1.87(SO₄)₃, where bulk heterostructure and exposed crystal plane were tuned to improve the Na-ion storage performance. Physicochemical characterizations and theoretical calculations suggested that the heterostructure of Na₆Fe(SO₄)₄ phase facilitated ionic kinetics by densifying Na-ion migration channels and lowering energy barriers. The (11-2) plane of Na_2.26Fe_1.87(SO₄)₃ promoted the adsorption of the electrolyte solution ClO₄^- anions and fluoroethylene carbonate molecules, which formed an inorganic-rich Na-ion conductive interphase at the positive electrode. When tested in combination with a presodiated FeS/carbon-based negative electrode in laboratory- scale single-layer pouch cell configuration, the Na_2.26Fe_1.87(SO₄)₃-based positive electrode enables an initial discharge capacity of about 83.9 mAh g^-1, an average cell discharge voltage of 2.35 V and a specific capacity retention of around 97% after 40 cycles at 24 mA g^-1 and 25 °C.

Sulfur-Bridged Bonds Heightened Na-Storage Properties in MnS Nanocubes Encapsulated by S-Doped Carbon Matrix Synthesized via Solvent-Free Tactics for High-Performance Hybrid Sodium Ion Capacitors

The exploitation of electrode materials with ability to balance capacity and kinetics between cathode and anode is a challenge for sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs). Mn-based anode materials are limited by poor electrical conductivity, sluggish reaction kinetics, large volume variation, weak cycling stability, and inferior reversible capacity. Herein, MnS nanocubes encapsulated in S-doped porous carbon matrix (MSC) with strong sulfur-bridged bond interactions (CSMn) are successfully synthesized by solvent-free tactics. The CSMn bonds generated between MnS and carbon significantly inhibit the aggregation of nanostructural MnS cubes, restrict the volume expansion, and stabilize the nanostructure, which improves the Na⁺ storage reversibility and stability. Moreover, S-doped porous carbon enhances the electrical conductivity and electrons/ions diffusion rate, which boosts a fast kinetic reaction. As expected, MSC anode presents an outstanding reversible capacity of 600 mAh g^-1 at 0.2 A g^-1 and a long-term stable capacity of 357 mAh g^-1 for 1000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A g^-1 in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The as-assembled SIHCs deliver a high energy density of 109 W h kg^-1 and a high power output of 98 W kg^-1 , with 88% capacity retention at 2 A g^-1 after 2000 cycles and practical applications (55 LEDs can be lighted for 10 min).

Functionalized Halloysite Scaffold Controls Sodium Dendrite Growth

Sodium metal is one of the most promising anodes for the prospective low-cost rechargeable batteries. Nevertheless, the commercialization of Na metal anodes remains restricted by sodium dendrite growth. Herein, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were chosen as the insulated scaffolds, and Ag nanoparticles were introduced as sodiophilic sites to achieve uniform sodium deposition from bottom to top under the synergistic effect. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results demonstrated that the presence of Ag greatly increased the binding energy of sodium on HNTs/Ag (-2.85 eV) vs HNTs (-0.85 eV). Meanwhile, thanks to the opposite charges on the inner and outer surfaces of HNTs, faster Na⁺ transfer kinetics and selective adsorption of SO₃CF₃^- on the inner surface of HNTs were achieved, thus avoiding the formation of space charge. Accordingly, the coordination between HNTs and Ag afforded a high Coulombic efficiency (about 99.6% at 2 mA cm^-2), long lifespan in a symmetric battery (for over 3500 h at 1 mA cm^-2), and remarkable cycle stability in Na metal full batteries. This work offers a novel strategy to design a sodiophilic scaffold by nanoclay for dendrite-free Na metal anodes.

Ultrathin CuF2 -Rich Solid-Electrolyte Interphase Induced by Cation-Tailored Double Electrical Layer toward Durable Sodium Storage

Solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) seriously affects battery's cycling life, especially for high-capacity anode due to excessive electrolyte decomposition from particle fracture. Herein, we report an ultrathin SEI (3-4 nm) induced by Cu⁺ -tailored double electrical layer (EDL) to suppress electrolyte consumption and enhance cycling stability of CuS anode in sodium-ion batteries. Unique EDL with SO₃ CF₃ -Cu complex absorbing on CuS in NaSO₃ CF₃ /diglyme electrolyte is demonstrated by in situ surface-enhanced Raman, Cyro-TEM and theoretical calculation, in which SO₃ CF₃ -Cu could be reduced to CuF₂ -rich SEI. Dispersed CuF₂ and F-containing compound can provide good interfacial contact for formation of ultrathin and stable SEI film to minimize electrolyte consumption and reduce activation energy of Na⁺ transport. As a result, the modified CuS delivers high capacity of 402.8 mAh g^-1 after 7000 cycles without capacity decay. The insights of SEI construction pave a way for high-stability electrode.

Doping Regulation in Polyanionic Compounds for Advanced Sodium-Ion Batteries

It has long been the goal to develop rechargeable batteries with low cost and long cycling life. Polyanionic compounds offer attractive advantages of robust frameworks, long-term stability, and cost-effectiveness, making them ideal candidates as electrode materials for grid-scale energy storage systems. In the past few years, various polyanionic electrodes have been synthesized and developed for sodium storage. Specifically, doping regulation including cation and anion doping has shown a great effect in tailoring the structures of polyanionic electrodes to achieve extraordinary electrochemical performance. In this review, recent progress in doping regulation in polyanionic compounds as electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is summarized, and their underlying mechanisms in improving electrochemical properties are discussed. Moreover, challenges and prospects for the design of advanced polyanionic compounds for SIBs are put forward. It is anticipated that further versatile strategies in developing high-performance electrode materials for advanced energy storage devices can be inspired.

Decorating MnO2 nanosheets on MOF-derived Co3O4 as a battery-type electrode for hybrid supercapacitors

Metal–organic framework-derived materials are now considered potential next-generation electrode materials for supercapacitors. In this present investigation, Co₃O₄@MnO₂ nanosheets are synthesized using ZIF-67, which is used as a sacrificial template through a facile hydrothermal method. The unique vertically grown nanosheets provide an effective pathway for rapidly transporting electrons and ions. As a result, the ZIF-67 derived Co₃O₄@MnO₂-3 electrode material shows a high specific capacitance of 768 C g⁻¹ at 1 A g⁻¹ current density with outstanding cycling stability (86% retention after 5000 cycles) and the porous structure of the material has a good BET surface area of 160.8 m² g⁻¹. As a hybrid supercapacitor, Co₃O₄@MnO₂-3//activated carbon exhibits a high specific capacitance (82.9 C g⁻¹) and long cycle life (85.5% retention after 5000 cycles). Moreover, a high energy density of 60.17 W h kg⁻¹ and power density of 2674.37 W kg⁻¹ has been achieved. This attractive performance reveals that Co₃O₄@MnO₂ nanosheets could find potential applications as an electrode material for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors.

Performance comparison of distinct bismuth molybdate single phases for asymmetric supercapacitor applications

The enticing features of metal molybdates make them an attractive candidate for energy storage systems. This report describes the synthesis of three distinct single-phase bismuth molybdates (Bi₂Mo_xO_y; α-Bi₂Mo₃O₁₂, β-Bi₂Mo₂O₉, and γ-Bi₂MoO₆) using the gel matrix particle growth method and their application in high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors. The single phase and purity of the synthesized Bi₂Mo_xO_y particles were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and further verified by Raman analysis. The UV-visible spectra show the electronic and optical behaviours of the as-synthesized α, β, and γ Bi₂Mo_xO_y. The morphologies of the as-synthesized three different Bi₂Mo_xO_y phases were analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The particle formation was further investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the interplanar spacings of the Bi₂Mo_xO_y phases were in accordance with the planes. The surface area and pore volume of the prepared samples were analysed using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The electrochemical properties of the products were confirmed by various tests, including cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3 M KOH. Among the three phases, α-Bi₂Mo₃O₁₂ exhibits a huge specific capacitance (Cs) of 714 F g^-1 at a current density of 1 A g^-1. Furthermore, it displays an admirable cycling stability of 86.55% after 5000 cycles. The chosen α-Bi₂Mo₃O₁₂ electrode possesses an increased energy density of 47.5 W h kg^-1 at 1 A g^-1 with a capacitive retention rate of 71.90% at 5 A g^-1 after 10 000 cycles. A remarkable electrochemical performance of Bi₂Mo₃O₁₂ with an exceptional power density of 750 W kg^-1 was observed for the prepared asymmetric device. Bismuth molybdate's notable performance indicates that it can be an active material for energy storage applications.

Achieving Sustainable and Stable Potassium-Ion Batteries by Leaf-Bioinspired Nanofluidic Flow

In nature, living systems have evolved integrated structures, matching optimized nanofluidics to adapt to external conditions. In rechargeable batteries, high-capacity electrodes are often plagued by the crucial and universal bottleneck of dissolution and shuttle of active substance into electrolyte, posing obstacles of inevitable capacity degradation. Introducing the concept of intelligent nanofluidics to electrodes, a leaf-bioinspired electrode configuration with hierarchical architecture to tackle this problem is proposed. This integrated structure with fine-tuned surface pores and unobstructed interior porous media, can spatially control the anisotropic nanofluidic flux, in an efficient and self-protectable way: tailoring the outflow across the electrode's surface and free transport in interior, to ensure speedy and stable energy conversion. As proofs of concept, applications of sustainable electrodes rejuvenated from fallen leaf and spent commercial batteries, are designed with leaf-bioinspired architecture. Both KCoS₂ and KS battery systems show advanced steady cycling with effectively mitigated shuttle issues in this smart architecture (0.15% and 0.21% capacity decay per cycle), even at high areal mass loading, when compared with open porous structure (0.60% and 0.39%). This work may pave a new way from a biomimetic view to integrated electrode engineering with regulated surface shielding to conquer the universal dissolution-shuttle problems facing high-capacity materials.

MAX-phase Derived Tin Diselenide for 2D/2D Heterostructures with Ultralow Surface/Interface Transport Barriers toward Li-/Na-ions Storage

2D tin diselenide and its derived 2D heterostructures have delivered promising potentials in various applications ranging from electronics to energy storage devices. The major challenges associated with large-scale fabrication of SnSe₂ crystals, however, have hindered its engineering applications. Herein, a tin-extraction synthetic method is proposed for producing large-size SnSe₂ bulk crystals. In a typical synthesis, a Sn-containing MAX phase (V₂ SnC) and a Se source are heat-treated under a reducing atmosphere, by which Sn is extracted from the V₂ SnC phase as a rectified Sn source to form SnSe₂ crystals in the cold zone. After the following liquid exfoliation, the obtained 2D SnSe₂ nanosheets have a lateral size of a few centimeters and an atomic thickness. Furthermore, by coupling with 2D graphene to form 2D/2D SnSe₂ /graphene heterostructured electrodes, as validated by theoretical calculation and experimental studies, the superior Li-/Na-ion storage performance with ultralow surface/interface ion transport barriers are achieved for rechargeable Li-/Na-ion batteries. This innovative synthetic strategy opens a new avenue for the large-scale synthesis of selenides and offers more options into the practical application of emerging 2D/2D heterostructure for electrochemical energy storage.

Sandwich-type CoSe2-CNWs@rGO/S composites with efficient trapping and catalytic conversion of polysulfides in lithium-sulfur batteries

Although lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are very promising in energy storage devices, their low conductivity, shuttle effect, and volume expansion unfavorably lead to sluggish kinetics and worsening electrochemical performance. To address these problems, we firstly prepared conductive carbon nanowires embedded with lithiophilic CoSe₂ nanoparticles (CoSe₂-CNWs), and utilized CoSe₂-CNWs to construct reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets; thereby, sandwich-type CoSe₂-CNWs@rGO composites were assembled. CoSe₂-CNWs@rGO composites were taken as the sulfur host. Due to the alternating rGO sheets and active sulfur, the special sandwich structure can maximize the use of sulfur, confine polysulfides physically, favor electron transport, and cushion the volume change during cycling. The interlayer CoSe₂-CNWs network also can entrap polysulfides chemically, promote the electron transfer, and improve the reaction kinetics, owing to the synergetic merits of high polarity and conductivity. Compared with CoSe₂-CNWs/S and Co-CNWs/S, the CoSe₂-CNWs@rGO/S cathode shows a significant improvement in cell performance. Its specific capacity decreases from 1137.9 mA h g^-1 at 0.1 C to 649.7 mA h g^-1 at 2 C, demonstrating the optimal rate performance. The cycling capacity also slowly reduces from 975.4 mA h g^-1 to 839.7 mA h g^-1 after 150 cycles at 0.5 C, showing a high retention of 86.1% with a tiny average fading rate (0.093%).

A 3D-Printed, Freestanding Carbon Lattice for Sodium Ion Batteries

Increasing mass loadings of battery electrodes critically enhances the energy density of an overall battery by eliminating much of the inactive components, while compacting the battery size and lowering the costs of the ingredients. A hard carbon microlattice, digitally designed and fabricated by stereolithography 3D-printing and pyrolysis, offers enormous potential for high-mass-loading electrodes. In this work, sodium-ion batteries using hard carbon microlattices produced by an inexpensive 3D printer are demonstrated. Controlled periodic carbon microlattices are created with enhanced ion transport through microchannels. Carbon microlattices with a beam width of 32.8 µm reach a record-high areal capacity of 21.3 mAh cm^-2 at a loading of 98 mg cm^-2 without degrading performance, which is much higher than the conventional monolithic electrodes (≈5.2 mAh cm^-2 at 92 mg cm^-2 ). Furthermore, binder-free, pure-carbon elements of microlattices enable the tracking of structural changes in hard carbon that support the hypothesized intercalation of ions at plateau regions by temporal ex situ X-ray diffraction measurements. These results will advance the development of high-performance and low-cost anodes for sodium-ion batteries as well as help with understanding the mechanisms of ion intercalations in hard carbon, expanding the utilities of 3D-printed carbon architectures in both applications and fundamental studies.

Active material and interphase structures governing performance in sodium and potassium ion batteries

Development of energy storage systems is a topic of broad societal and economic relevance, and lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are currently the most advanced electrochemical energy storage systems. However, concerns on the scarcity of lithium sources and consequently the expected price increase have driven the development of alternative energy storage systems beyond LIBs. In the search for sustainable and cost-effective technologies, sodium ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium ion batteries (PIBs) have attracted considerable attention. Here, a comprehensive review of ongoing studies on electrode materials for SIBs and PIBs is provided in comparison to those for LIBs, which include layered oxides, polyanion compounds and Prussian blue analogues for positive electrode materials, and carbon-based and alloy materials for negative electrode materials. The importance of the crystal structure for electrode materials is discussed with an emphasis placed on intrinsic and dynamic structural properties and electrochemistry associated with alkali metal ions. The key challenges for electrode materials as well as the interface/interphase between the electrolyte and electrode materials, and the corresponding strategies are also examined. The discussion and insights presented in this review can serve as a guide regarding where future investigations of SIBs and PIBs will be directed.

Regulating Sodium Deposition through Gradiently-Graphitized Framework for Dendrite-Free Na Metal Anode

Na metal anode (NMA) is one of the most promising candidate materials for next-generation low-cost sodium metal batteries. However, the preferred deposition of Na metal at the anode/separator interface increases the risk of dendrite penetration of the separator, consequently, reduces safety and life of batteries with NMA. In this study, a Na deposition-regulating strategy is shown by designing a gradiently graphitized 3D carbon fiber (CF) framework as host (grad-CF), whereby Na is guided to deposit preferentially at the bottom of the anode, safely away from the separator. The obtained Na anode significantly reduces the probability of dendrite-induced short circuits. The grad-CF host enables NMA stable cycling at a high current density of 6 mA cm^-2 . When the Na@grad-CF is applied as anode in full cells pared with Na₃ V₂ (PO₄ )₃ (NVP) cathode, it exhibits a reversible capacity of 73 mA h g^-1 after 500 cycles with a low decay rate of 0.13%.

Highly Stable Potassium-Ion Battery Enabled by Nanoengineering of an Sb Anode

We present the nanoengineering of Sb particles assisted by a conductive and stress-relieving network of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), in the proper design of anode materials with high specific capacity and excellent stability for potassium-ion batteries (KIBs). The nanosized Sb particles are prepared by the CQDs as functional tuners in the morphology and surface, which tune the size to nanolevel and provide fast ionic channels and a soft matrix to relieve the volume changes. As the additional conductive and stress-relieving network layer, PEDOT:PSS offers enhanced electron/ion pathways and maintains the integrity of the Sb@CQD composite electrode. In the KIB, the prepared Sb anode exhibits battery performance with a high specific capacity of 480 mA h g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1 and a high-capacity retention of 95.4% over 350 cycles.

Constructing Heterostructured Bimetallic Selenides on an N-Doped Carbon Nanoframework as Anodes for Ultrastable Na-Ion Batteries

Transition-metal selenides have been recognized as a class of promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) on account of their high capacity. Nevertheless, the sluggish conversion kinetics and rapid capacity decay caused by insufficient conductivity and volume change restrain their applications. Herein, hollow heterostructured bimetallic selenides embedded in an N-doped carbon nanoframework (H-CoSe₂/ZnSe@NC) were prepared via a facile template-engaged method. Benefiting from the rich defect at the phase boundary of the CoSe₂/ZnSe heterostructure, pre-reserved cavity, and enhanced structure rigidity, the abovementioned issues are resolved at once, and the accelerated charge transportation kinetics traced by spectroscopy techniques and theoretical calculations certify the interface effect in the capacity release. In addition, ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy all confirm the high-reversible electrochemical conversion mechanism in H-CoSe₂/ZnSe@NC. Together with a reasonable structural architecture and the highly reversible conversion reaction, H-CoSe₂/ZnSe@NC displays a prominent rate capacity (244.8 mA h g^-1 at 10 A g^-1) as well as an ultralong lifespan (10,000 cycles at 10 A g^-1), highlighting the significance of structure control in fabricating high-performance anodes for SIBs.
