Van der Waals organic/inorganic heterostructures in the two-dimensional limit

Lattice-guided assembly of optoelectronically active π-conjugated peptides on 1D van der Waals single crystals

The deployment of organic molecules in high-performance devices strongly relies on the formation of well-ordered domains, which is often complicated by the dynamic and sensitive nature of supramolecular interactions. Here, we engineered the assembly of water-processable, optoelectronic π-conjugated peptides into well-defined organic-inorganic heterointerfaced assemblies by leveraging the long-range anisotropic ordering of 1D van der Waals (vdW) crystals composed of subnanometer-thick transition metal sulfide chains (MS3; M = Nb, Ta) as assembly templates. We found that the monomers can readily form 1D supramolecular assemblies onto the underlying crystal surface, owing to the structural correspondence between the π-π interactions of the quaterthiophene (4T)-based peptide units (DDD-4T) and sulfur atom ordering along the NbS3 (100) surface. The heterointerfaced assemblies exhibited substantially red-shifted photoluminescence and enhanced visible-range photocurrent generation compared to solution-assembled films. Our results underscore the role of lattice matching in forming ordered supramolecular assemblies, offering an emergent approach to assembling organic building blocks endowed with improved physical properties.

Utilizing excited-state proton transfer fluorescence quenching mechanism, layered rare earth hydroxides enable ultra-sensitive detection of nitroaromatic

Convenient, rapid, and accurate detection of nitroaromatic organic toxins and harmful substances is of great significance in research. In the present study, two-dimensional layered rare-earth hydroxides (LYH) were used as ion-exchange matrix materials, and the anionic fluorescent dye molecules (HPTS) were successfully introduced into the LYH structures in situ via a simple and effective "plug-and-play" strategy, which gave the compounds ultra-sensitive fluorescence sensing detection of nitrobenzene, p-nitrotoluene and p-nitrophenol (Fluorescence response time < 1 sec, and the LOD for nitrobenzene, p-nitrophenol and p-nitrotoluene reached an impressive 349 ppb, 22 ppb and 98 ppb, respectively). Combined with theoretical calculations, we elucidated in detail the fluorescence quenching response mechanism of the LYH-HPTS towards nitroaromatic. Additionally, we also constructed fluorescent paper sensor, which effectively transformed the LYH-HPTS from theoretical detection to device application. The LYH-HPTS material is not only simple to synthesize, cost-effective and stable, but also has the features of fast response, excellent sensitivity and selectivity, and good reproducibility, which provides a new approach for the rapid and accurate detection of nitroaromatic.

Self-Assembly of Molecular Landers Equipped with Functional Moieties on the Surface: A Mini Review

The bottom-up fabrication of supramolecular and self-assembly on various substrates has become an extremely relevant goal to achieve prospects in the development of nanodevices for electronic circuitry or sensors. One of the branches of this field is the self-assembly of functional molecular components driven through non-covalent interactions on the surfaces, such as van der Waals (vdW) interactions, hydrogen bonding (HB), electrostatic interactions, etc., allowing the controlled design of nanostructures that can satisfy the requirements of nanoengineering concepts. In this context, non-covalent interactions present opportunities that have been previously explored in several molecular systems adsorbed on surfaces, primarily due to their highly directional nature which facilitates the formation of well-ordered structures. Herein, we review a series of research works by combining STM (scanning tunneling microscopy) with theoretical calculations, to reveal the processes used in the area of self-assembly driven by molecule Landers equipped with functional groups on the metallic surfaces. Combining these processes is necessary for researchers to advance the self-assembly of supramolecular architectures driven by multiple non-covalent interactions on solid surfaces.

Strong Covalent Coupling in Vertically Layered SnSe2/PTAA Heterojunctions Enabled High Performance Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Photodetectors

Controllable large-scale integration of two-dimensional (2D) materials with organic semiconductors and the realization of strong coupling between them still remain challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a wafer-scale, vertically layered SnSe2/PTAA heterojunction array with high light-trapping ability via a low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy method and a facile spin-coating process. Conductive probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) measurements reveal strong rectification and photoresponse behavior in the individual SnSe2 nanosheet/PTAA heterojunction. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that vertically layered SnSe2/PTAA heterojunctions exhibit stronger C-Se covalent coupling than that of the conventional tiled type, which could facilitate more efficient charge transfer. Benefiting from these advantages, the SnSe2/PTAA heterojunction photodetectors with an optimized PTAA concentration show high performance, including a responsivity of 41.02 A/W, an external quantum efficiency of 1.31 × 104%, and high uniformity. The proposed approach for constructing large-scale 2D inorganic-organic heterostructures represents an effective route to fabricate high-performance broadband photodetectors for integrated optoelectronic systems.

A Molecular Coordination Strategy for Regulating the Interface of MoS2 Field Effect Transistors

Chemically modifying monolayer two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with organic molecules provides a wide range of possibilities to regulate the electronic and optoelectronic performance of both materials and devices. However, it remains challenging to chemically attach organic molecules to monolayer TMDs without damaging their crystal structures. Herein, we show that the Mo atoms of monolayer MoS2 (1L-MoS2) in defect states can coordinate with both catechol and 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) groups, affording a facile route to chemically modifying 1L-MoS2. Through the design of two isomeric molecules (LA2 and LA5) comprising catechol and Phen groups, we show that attaching organic molecules to Mo atoms via coordinative bonds has no negative effect on the crystal structure of 1L-MoS2. Both theoretical calculation and experiment results indicate that the coordinative strategy is beneficial for (i) repairing sulfur vacancies and passivating defects; (ii) achieving a long-term and stable n-doping effect; and (iii) facilitating the electron transfer. Field effect transistors (FETs) based on the coordinatively modified 1L-MoS2 show high electron mobilities up to 120.3 cm2 V-1 s-1 with impressive current on/off ratios over 109. Our results indicate that coordinatively attaching catechol- or Phen-bearing molecules may be a general method for the nondestructive modification of TMDs.

Exciton Dynamics of TiOPc/WSe2 Heterostructure

The van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures composed of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and organic semiconductors demonstrate numerous compelling optoelectronic properties. However, the influence of the vdW epitaxial effect and temperature on the optoelectronic properties and interface exciton dynamics of heterostructures remains unclear. This study systematically investigates the fluorescence properties of TiOPc/WSe2 heterostructure. Comprehensive spectral characterization elucidates that the emission behavior of the TiOPc/WSe2 heterostructure arises from charge/energy transfer at the heterostructure interfaces and the structural ordering of the organic layer on the 2D monolayer WSe2 induced by vdW epitaxy. The interface exciton dynamic features probed by ultrafast transient spectroscopy reveal that the face-to-face molecular stacking configuration of TiOPc exhibits ultrafast exciton dynamics. In particular, we observe picosecond-scale absorption of organic molecular dimer cations, providing direct evidence of interface charge transfer at room temperature. Moreover, energy transfer from the TiOPc to WSe2 may exist based on the tunability in the fluorescence emission of the TiOPc/WSe2 heterostructure as the temperature changes. This study unveils the critical role of vdW epitaxy and temperature in the exciton dynamics of organic/2D TMDs hybrid systems and provides guidance for studying interlayer charge and energy transfer in organic/inorganic heterostructures.

Recent progress in emerging two-dimensional organic-inorganic van der Waals heterojunctions

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted significant attention in recent decades due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Among them, to meet the growing demand for multifunctional applications, 2D organic-inorganic van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions have become increasingly popular in the development of optoelectronic devices. These heterojunctions demonstrate impressive capability to synergistically combine the favourable characteristics of organic and inorganic materials, thereby offering a wide range of advantages. Also, they enable the creation of innovative device structures and introduce novel functionalities in existing 2D materials, avoiding the need for lattice matching in different material systems. Presently, researchers are actively working on improving the performance of devices based on 2D organic-inorganic vdW heterojunctions by focusing on enhancing the quality of 2D materials, precise stacking methods, energy band regulation, and material selection. Therefore, this review presents a thorough examination of the emerging 2D organic-inorganic vdW heterojunctions, including their classification, fabrication, and corresponding devices. Additionally, this review offers profound and comprehensive insight into the challenges in this field to inspire future research directions. It is expected to propel researchers to harness the extraordinary capabilities of 2D organic-inorganic vdW heterojunctions for a wider range of applications by further advancing the understanding of their fundamental properties, expanding the range of available materials, and exploring novel device architectures. The ongoing research and development in this field hold potential to unlock captivating advancements and foster practical applications across diverse industries.

Rational Design of Stimuli-Responsive Inorganic 2D Materials via Molecular Engineering: Toward Molecule-Programmable Nanoelectronics

The ability of electronic devices to act as switches makes digital information processing possible. Succeeding graphene, emerging inorganic 2D materials (i2DMs) have been identified as alternative 2D materials to harbor a variety of active molecular components to move the current silicon-based semiconductor technology forward to a post-Moore era focused on molecule-based information processing components. In this regard, i2DMs benefits are not only for their prominent physiochemical properties (e.g., the existence of bandgap), but also for their high surface-to-volume ratio rich in reactive sites. Nonetheless, since this field is still in an early stage, having knowledge of both i) the different strategies for molecularly functionalizing the current library of i2DMs, and ii) the different types of active molecular components is a sine qua non condition for a rational design of stimuli-responsive i2DMs capable of performing logical operations at the molecular level. Consequently, this Review provides a comprehensive tutorial for covalently anchoring ad hoc molecular components-as active units triggered by different external inputs-onto pivotal i2DMs to assess their role in the expanding field of molecule-programmable nanoelectronics for electrically monitoring bistable molecular switches. Limitations, challenges, and future perspectives of this emerging field which crosses materials chemistry with computation are critically discussed.

Revealing the key role of molecular packing on interface spin polarization at two-dimensional limit in spintronic devices

Understanding spinterfaces between magnetic metals and organic semiconductors is essential to unlock the great potentials that organic materials host for spintronic applications. Although plenty of efforts have been devoted to studying organic spintronic devices, exploring the role of metal/molecule spinterfaces at two-dimensional limit remains challenging because of excessive disorders and traps at the interfaces. Here, we demonstrate atomically smooth metal/molecule interfaces through nondestructively transferring magnetic electrodes on epitaxial grown single-crystalline layered organic films. Using such high-quality interfaces, we investigate spin injection of spin-valve devices based on organic films of different layers, in which molecules are packed in different manners. We find that the measured magnetoresistance and the estimated spin polarization increase markedly for bilayer devices compared with their monolayer counterparts. These observations reveal the key role of molecular packing on spin polarization, which is supported by density functional theory calculations. Our findings provide promising routes toward designing spinterfaces for organic spintronic devices.

Reconfiguring band-edge states and charge distribution of organic semiconductor-incorporated 2D perovskites via pressure gating

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor heterostructures are key building blocks for many electronic and optoelectronic devices. Reconfiguring the band-edge states and modulating their interplay with charge carriers at the interface in a continuous manner have long been sought yet are challenging. Here, using organic semiconductor-incorporated 2D halide perovskites as the model system, we realize the manipulation of band-edge states and charge distribution via mechanical-rather than chemical or thermal-regulation. Compression induces band-alignment switching and charge redistribution due to the different pressure responses of organic and inorganic building blocks, giving controllable emission properties of 2D perovskites. We propose and demonstrate a "pressure gating" strategy that enables the control of multiple emission states within a single material. We also reveal that band-alignment transition at the organic-inorganic interface is intrinsically not well resolved at room temperature owing to the thermally activated transfer and shuffling of band-edge carriers. This work provides important fundamental insights into the energetics and carrier dynamics of hybrid semiconductor heterostructures.

Synthetic Nanoarchitectonics of Functional Organic-Inorganic 2D Germanane Heterostructures via Click Chemistry

Succeeding graphene, 2D inorganic materials made of reactive van der Waals layers, like 2D germanane (2D-Ge) derivatives, have attracted great attention because their physicochemical characteristics can be entirely tuned by modulating the nature of the surface substituent. Although very interesting from a scientific point of view, almost all the reported works involving 2D-Ge derivatives are focused on computational studies. Herein, a first prototype of organic-inorganic 2D-Ge heterostructure has been synthesized by covalently anchoring thiol-rich carbon dots (CD-SH) onto 2D allyl germanane (2D-aGe) via a simple and green "one-pot" click chemistry approach. Remarkably, the implanted characteristics of the carbon nanomaterial provide new physicochemical features to the resulting 0D/2D heterostructure, making possible its implementation in yet unexplored optoelectronic tasks-e.g., as a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) sensing system triggered by supramolecular π-π interactions-that are inaccessible for the pristine 2D-aGe counterpart. Consequently, this work builds a foundation toward the robust achievement of functional organic-inorganic 2D-Ge nanoarchitectonics through covalently assembling thiol-rich carbon nanoallotropes on commercially available 2D-aGe.

Microwave Facilitated Covalent Organic Framework/Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Heterostructures

Organic/inorganic heterostructures present a versatile platform for creating materials with new functionalities and hybrid properties. In particular, junctions between two dimensional materials have demonstrated utility in next generation electronic, optical, and optoelectronic devices. This work pioneers a microwave facilitated synthesis process to readily incorporate few-layer covalent organic framework (COF) films onto monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC). Preferential microwave excitation of the monolayer TMDC flakes result in selective attachment of COFs onto the van der Waals surface with film thicknesses between 1 and 4 nm. The flexible process is extended to multiple TMDCs (MoS₂, MoSe₂, MoSSe) and several well-known COFs (TAPA-PDA COF, TPT-TFA-COF, and COF-5). Photoluminescence studies reveal a power-dependent defect formation in the TMDC layer, which facilitates electronic coupling between the materials at higher TMDC defect densities. This coupling results in a shift in the A-exciton peak location of MoSe₂, with a red or blue shift of 50 or 19 meV, respectively, depending upon the electron donating character of the few-layer COF films. Moreover, optoelectronic devices fabricated from the COF-5/TMDC heterostructure present an opportunity to tune the PL intensity and control the interaction dynamics within inorganic/organic heterostructures.

Interfacial Coupling and Modulation of van der Waals Heterostructures for Nanodevices

In recent years, van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) of two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted extensive research interest. By stacking various 2D materials together to form vdWHs, it is interesting to see that new and fascinating properties are formed beyond single 2D materials; thus, 2D heterostructures-based nanodevices, especially for potential optoelectronic applications, were successfully constructed in the past few decades. With the dramatically increased demand for well-controlled heterostructures for nanodevices with desired performance in recent years, various interfacial modulation methods have been carried out to regulate the interfacial coupling of such heterostructures. Here, the research progress in the study of interfacial coupling of vdWHs (investigated by Photoluminescence, Raman, and Pump-probe spectroscopies as well as other techniques), the modulation of interfacial coupling by applying various external fields (including electrical, optical, mechanical fields), as well as the related applications for future electrics and optoelectronics, have been briefly reviewed. By summarizing the recent progress, discussing the recent advances, and looking forward to future trends and existing challenges, this review is aimed at providing an overall picture of the importance of interfacial modulation in vdWHs for possible strategies to optimize the device's performance.

Direct Detection of Near-Infrared Circularly Polarized Light via Precisely Designed Chiral Perovskite Heterostructures

Chiral metal halide perovskites (CMHPs) have recently shown great potential for direct circularly polarized light (CPL) detection. However, owing to the limited cutoff wavelength edge of these CMHPs, most of the detectors presented thus far are characterized only in the ultraviolet and visible range; CMHPs that target at the near-infrared (NIR) region are still greatly desired. Here, we design a novel CMHP heterostructure, synthesized via solution-processed epitaxial growth of crystalline 3D MAPbI₃ on a 2D chiral (R-BPEA)₂PbI₄ (R-BPEA = (R)-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethylammonium) crystal, and provide the first demonstration of self-powered direct NIR-CPL detection. Compared with individual chiral (R-BPEA)₂PbI₄, the heterostructure not only retains the spin selectivity but also allows much broader absorbance, especially beyond 780 nm, where the (R-BPEA)₂PbI₄ cannot absorb. Furthermore, the built-in electric potential in the heterojunction forces spontaneous separation/transport of photogenerated carriers, enabling the fabrication of devices operating without external energy supply. By making use of the abovementioned advantages, the self-powered CPL detectors of the (R-BPEA)₂PbI₄/MAPbI₃ heterostructures hence show competitive circular polarization sensitivity at 785 nm with a high anisotropy factor of up to 0.25. In addition, a large on/off switching ratio of ∼10⁵ and an impressive detectivity of ∼10¹⁰ Jones are also achieved. As a pioneer study, our results may broaden the material scope for future chiroptical devices based on CMHPs.

Nanoscale Double-Heterojunctional Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution

The active sites and charge/mass transfer properties in electrocatalysts play vital roles in kinetics and thermodynamics of electrocatalysis, and impose direct impacts on electrocatalytic performance, which cannot be achieved by a simplex structure. As a prototype, the authors propose a double-heterojunctional nanostructure of NiS₂ /Ni₃ C@C containing NiS₂ /Ni₃ C and Ni₃ C/C heterojunctions as a general model to optimize the above issues and boost electrocatalytic performance. During the thermal reorganization, the in situ reaction between NiS₂ nanoparticles and carbon induces the formation of Ni₃ C between them and constructs tightly contacted two kinds of interfaces among the three components. The TEM and XPS reveal the intimately contacted three components and the as-constructed interacted dual interfaces, further confirming the formation of a porous double-heterojunctional nanostructure. Theoretical calculations uncover that the electron density redistribution occurs at Ni₃ C/C interface by spontaneous electron transfer from defected carbon to Ni₃ C and lower ΔG_H* achieves at NiS₂ /Ni₃ C interface by the concentrated interfacial charge density, which favors the simultaneous realization of high catalytic activity and rapid charge/mass transfer. When applied for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the porous double-heterojunctional NiS₂ /Ni₃ C@C exhibits excellent HER activity and durability among all pH values. Profoundly, this special double-heterojunctional structure can provide a new model for high-performance electrocatalysts and beyond.

Atomic-Resolution Imaging of Small Organic Molecules on Graphene

Here, we demonstrate atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) imaging of light elements in small organic molecules on graphene. We use low-dose, room-temperature, aberration-corrected STEM to image 2D monolayer and bilayer molecular crystals, followed by advanced image processing methods to create high-quality composite images from ∼10²-10⁴ individual molecules. In metalated porphyrin and phthalocyanine derivatives, these images contain an elementally sensitive contrast with up to 1.3 Å resolution─sufficient to distinguish individual carbon and nitrogen atoms. Importantly, our methods can be applied to molecules with low masses (∼0.6 kDa) and nanocrystalline domains containing just a few hundred molecules, making it possible to study systems for which large crystals cannot easily be grown. Our approach is enabled by low-background graphene substrates, which we show increase the molecules' critical dose by 2-7×. These results indicate a new route for low-dose, atomic-resolution electron microscopy imaging to solve the structures of small organic molecules.
