Lattice Mismatch at the Heterojunction of Perovskite Solar Cells

Lattice mismatch significantly influences microscopic transport in semiconducting devices, affecting interfacial charge behavior and device efficacy. This atomic-level disordering, often overlooked in previous research, is crucial for device efficiency and lifetime. Recent studies have highlighted emerging challenges related to lattice mismatch in perovskite solar cells, especially at heterojunctions, revealing issues like severe tensile stress, increased ion migration, and reduced carrier mobility. This review systematically discusses the effects of lattice mismatch on strain, material stability, and carrier dynamics. It also includes detailed characterizations of these phenomena and summarizes current strategies including epitaxial growth and buffer layer, as well as explores future solutions to mitigate mismatch-induced issues. We also provide the challenges and prospects for lattice mismatch, aiming to enhance the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells, and contribute to renewable energy technology advancements.

Recent advances in organolead halide crystalline materials for photocatalytic H2 evolution and CO2 reduction applications

The photocatalytic technique has been widely recognized as a feasible technological route for sustainable energy conversion of solar energy into chemical energy. Photocatalysts play a vital role in the whole catalytic process. In particular, organolead halide perovskites have become emerging photocatalysts, owing to their precisely tunable light absorption range, high carrier diffusion mobility, and longer carrier lifetime and diffusion length. Nevertheless, their intrinsic structural instability and high carrier recombination rate are the major bottlenecks for further development in photocatalytic applications. This Frontier is focused on the recent research about the instability mechanism of organolead halide perovskites. Then, we summarize the recently developed strategies to improve the structural stability and photocatalytic activity of organolead halide materials, with an emphasis on the construction of organolead halide crystalline catalysts with high intrinsic structural stability. Finally, an outlook and challenges of organometal halide photocatalysts are presented, demonstrating the irreplaceable role of this class of emergent materials in the field of photo-energy conversion.

In situ imaging of the atomic phase transition dynamics in metal halide perovskites

Phase transition dynamics are an important concern in the wide applications of metal halide perovskites, which fundamentally determine the optoelectronic properties and stabilities of perovskite materials and devices. However, a more in-depth understanding of such a phase transition process with real atomic resolution is still limited by the immature low-dose electron microscopy and in situ imaging studies to date. Here, we apply an emergent low-dose imaging technique to identify different phase structures (α, β and γ) in CsPbI3 nanocrystals during an in-situ heating process. The rotation angles of PbI6 octahedrons can be measured in these images to quantitatively describe the thermal-induced phase distribution and phase transition. Then, the dynamics of such a phase transition are studied at a macro time scale by continuously imaging the phase distribution in a single nanocrystal. The structural evolution process of CsPbI3 nanocrystals at the particle level, including the changes in morphology and composition, is also visualized with increasing temperature. These results provide atomic insights into the transition dynamics of perovskite phases, indicating a long-time transition process with obvious intermediate states and spatial distribution that should be generally considered in the further study of structure-property relations and device performance.

Microstructure of the Li-Al-O Second Phases in Garnet Solid Electrolytes

The microstructure of the Li₇La₃Zr₂O₁₂ (LLZO) garnet solid electrolyte is critical for its performance in all-solid-state lithium-ion battery. During conventional high-temperature sintering, second phases are generated at the grain boundaries due to the reaction between sintering aids and LLZO, which have an enormous effect on the performances of LLZO. However, a detailed structure study of the second phases and their impact on physical properties is lacking. Here, crystal structures of the second phases in LLZO pellets are studied in detail by transmission electron microscopy. Three different crystal structures of Li-Al-O second phases, γ-LiAlO₂, α-Li₅AlO₄, and β-Li₅AlO₄ were identified, and atomic-scale lattice information was obtained by applying low-dose high-resolution imaging for these electron-beam-sensitive second phases. On this basis, the structure-property relationship of these structures was explored. It was found that sintering aids with a higher Li/Al ratio are beneficial to form Li-rich second phases, which result in more highly ionic conductive LLZO.
