Two-in-one metallaphotoredox cross-couplings enabled by a photoactive ligand

De Novo Synthesis of 2,2'-Bipyridines and Related Bis-azines via Cascade Coupling and Double Pyridannulation of Isocyanides

Herein, we present a new and general protocol for the assembly of 2,2'-bipyridyls from nonpyridine substrates without using any metal catalysts or organometallic reagents. The process starts from the coupling of two 1,3-dienyl isocyanides followed by a 6π-electrocyclization/aromatization cascade featuring the simultaneous formation of two pyridine rings in a single operation. Notably, this strategy is also applicable to the construction of nonsymmetrical 2-(2-pyridyl)-quinolines/-quinoxalines. Furthermore, the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics endow our approach with great potential in biorelevant fields.

Insulated π-conjugated 2,2'-bipyridine transition-metal complexes: enhanced photoproperties in luminescence and catalysis

2,2'-Bipyridine has been identified as a privileged ligand scaffold for photofunctional transition metal complexes. We herein report on the synthesis and photoproperties of an insulated π-conjugated 2,2'-bipyridine with a linked rotaxane structure consisting of permethylated α-cyclodextrin (PM α-CD) and oligo(p-phenylene ethynylene). The insulated π-conjugated 2,2'-bipyridine exhibited enhanced ligand performance in the solid-state emitting biscyclometalated Ir complexes and visible-light-driven Ni catalysts owing to π-extension and remote steric effects based on the linked rotaxane structure.

Synthetic Chemistry in Flow: From Photolysis & Homogeneous Photocatalysis to Heterogeneous Photocatalysis

Photocatalytic synthesis of value-added chemicals has gained increasing attention in recent years owing to its versatility in driving many important reactions under ambient conditions. Selective hydrogenation, oxidation, coupling, and halogenation with a high conversion of the reactants have been realized using designed photocatalysts in batch reactors with small volumes at a laboratory scale; however, scaling-up remains a critical challenge due to inefficient utilization of incident light and active sites of the photocatalysts, resulting in poor catalytic performance that hinders its practical applications. Flow systems are considered one of the solutions for practical applications of light-driven reactions and have experienced great success in photolytic and homogeneous photocatalysis, yet their applications in heterogeneous photocatalysis are still under development. In this perspective, we have summarized recent progress in photolytic and photocatalytic synthetic chemistry performed in flow systems from the view of reactor design with a special focus on heterogeneous photocatalysis. The advantages and limitations of different flow systems, as well as some practical considerations of design strategies are discussed.

Excited-State Nickel-Catalyzed Amination of Aryl Bromides: Synthesis of Diphenylamines and Primary Anilines

Excited-state nickel-catalyzed C-N cross-coupling of aryl bromides with sodium azide enables the synthesis of diarylamines and primary anilines under mild reaction conditions. The oxidative addition of electron-rich aryl bromides with low-valent Ni under the photochemical conditions is endothermic. Herein, we demonstrate a light-mediated nickel-catalyzed reaction of electronically rich aryl bromides that yields diarylamines, while the reaction with electron-deficient aryl bromides gives access to anilines at room temperature.

Bottom-Up Construction of Ni(II)-Incorporated Covalent Organic Framework for Metallaphotoredox Catalysis

The construction of an all-in-one catalyst, in which the photosensitizer and the transition metal site are close to each other, is important for improving the efficiency of metallaphotoredox catalysis. However, the development of convenient synthetic strategies for the precise construction of an all-in-one catalyst remains a challenging task due to the requirement of precise installation of the catalytic sites. Herein, we have successfully established a facile bottom-up strategy for the direct synthesis of Ni(II)-incorporated covalent organic framework (COF), named LZU-713@Ni, as a versatile all-in-one metallaphotoredox catalyst. LZU-713@Ni showed excellent activity and recyclability in the photoredox/nickel-catalyzed C-O, C-S, and C-P cross-coupling reactions. Notably, this catalyst displayed a better catalytic activity than its homogeneous analogues, physically mixed dual catalyst system, and, especially, LZU-713/Ni which was prepared through post-synthetic modification. The improved catalytic efficiency of LZU-713@Ni should be attributed to the implementation of bottom-up strategy, which incorporated the fixed, ordered, and abundant catalytic sites into its framework. This work sheds new light on the exploration of concise and effective strategies for the construction of multifunctional COF-based photocatalysts.

Cerium Photocatalyst in Action: Structural Dynamics in the Presence of Substrate Visualized via Time-Resolved X-ray Liquidography

[Ce(III)Cl6]3-, with its earth-abundant metal element, is a promising photocatalyst facilitating carbon-halogen bond activation. Still, the structure of the reaction intermediate has yet to be explored. Here, we applied time-resolved X-ray liquidography (TRXL), which allows for direct observation of the structural details of reaction intermediates, to investigate the photocatalytic reaction of [Ce(III)Cl6]3-. Structural analysis of the TRXL data revealed that the excited state of [Ce(III)Cl6]3- has Ce-Cl bonds that are shorter than those of the ground state and that the Ce-Cl bond further contracts upon oxidation. In addition, this study represents the first application of TRXL to both photocatalyst-only and photocatalyst-and-substrate samples, providing insights into the substrate's influence on the photocatalyst's reaction dynamics. This study demonstrates the capability of TRXL in elucidating the reaction dynamics of photocatalysts under various conditions and highlights the importance of experimental determination of the structures of reaction intermediates to advance our understanding of photocatalytic mechanisms.

A π-conjugated covalent organic framework enables interlocked nickel/photoredox catalysis for light-harvesting cross-coupling reactions

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an outstanding platform for heterogeneous photocatalysis. Herein, we synthesized a pyrene-based two-dimensional C[double bond, length as m-dash]C linked π-conjugated COF via Knoevenagel condensation and anchored Ni(ii)-centers through bipyridine moieties. Instead of traditional dual metallaphotoredox catalysis, the mono-metal decorated Ni@Bpy-sp2c-COF interlocked the catalysis mediated by light and the transition metal. Under light irradiation, enhanced energy and electron transfer in the COF backbone, as delineated by the photoluminescence, electrochemical, and control experiments, expedited the excitation of Ni centers to efficiently catalyze diverse photocatalytic C-X (X = B, C, N, O, P, S) cross-coupling reactions with efficiencies orders of magnitude higher than the homogeneous controls. The COF catalyst tolerated a diverse range of coupling partners with various steric and electronic properties, delivering the products with up to 99% yields. Some reactions were performed on a gram scale and were applied to diversify pharmaceuticals and complex molecules to demonstrate the synthetic utility.

Enhanced Energy Transfer in A π-Conjugated Covalent Organic Framework Facilitates Excited-State Nickel Catalysis

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have received broad interest owing to their permanent porosity, high stability, and tunable functionalities. COFs with long-range π-conjugation and photosensitizing building blocks have been explored for sustainable photocatalysis. Herein, we report the first example of COF-based energy transfer Ni catalysis. A pyrene-based COF with sp² carbon-conjugation was synthesized and used to coordinate Ni^II centers through bipyridine moieties. Under light irradiation, enhanced energy transfer in the COF facilitated the excitation of Ni centers to catalyze borylation and trifluoromethylation reactions of aryl halides. The COF showed two orders of magnitude higher efficiency in these reactions than its homogeneous control and could be recovered and reused without significant loss of catalytic activity.

Direct deoxygenative borylation

Direct deoxygenative borylation is a highly enabling chemical transformation considering the attractive synthetic features of oxygenous feedstocks and organoboron compounds. Despite ranking among the synthetic ideality in different settings, such chemical space remained largely uncharted and underutilized until recent decades. This short review will summarize some key advances in the field of direct deoxy-borylation of alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids and organize these contributions based on substrate classes. In each representative, the general features, including reaction conditions, product scopes and mechanistic insights, will be highlighted and discussed.

Intraligand Charge Transfer Enables Visible-Light-Mediated Nickel-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions

We demonstrate that several visible-light-mediated carbon-heteroatom cross-coupling reactions can be carried out using a photoactive Ni^II precatalyst that forms in situ from a nickel salt and a bipyridine ligand decorated with two carbazole groups (Ni(Czbpy)Cl₂ ). The activation of this precatalyst towards cross-coupling reactions follows a hitherto undisclosed mechanism that is different from previously reported light-responsive nickel complexes that undergo metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Theoretical and spectroscopic investigations revealed that irradiation of Ni(Czbpy)Cl₂ with visible light causes an initial intraligand charge transfer event that triggers productive catalysis. Ligand polymerization affords a porous, recyclable organic polymer for heterogeneous nickel catalysis of cross-coupling reactions. The heterogeneous catalyst shows stable performance in a packed-bed flow reactor during a week of continuous operation.

Shining Visible Light on Reductive Elimination: Acridine-Pd-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling of Aryl Halides with Carboxylic Acids

Despite the recent tremendous progress on transition-metal/photoredox dual catalysis in organic synthesis, single transition-metal catalysis under visible-light irradiation, which can utilize light energy more efficiently, is still underdeveloped. Herein, we report the design of photosensitizing phosphinoacridine bidentate ligands for visible-light-induced transition-metal catalysis, expecting that the electron-accepting acridine moiety would create a highly reactive electron-deficient metal center toward reductive elimination via metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT). Using these ligands, we have achieved a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of aryl halides with carboxylic acids under visible-light irradiation. Electronic tuning of the phosphinoacridine ligands not only enabled the use of a variety of aryl halides as the coupling partner, including less reactive aryl chlorides, under blue light irradiation, but also realized the employment of lower-energy green and red light for the cross-coupling. Experimental mechanistic studies have proved that the reductive elimination of aryl esters is induced by photoirradiation of phosphinoacridine-ligated arylpalladium(II) carboxylate complexes. The theoretical calculation suggests that the reductive elimination in the excited state is promoted by decreasing the electron density of the Pd center through photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer, i.e., MLCT, in the transition state owing to the electron-deficient acridine scaffold. This is a very rare example of photoinduced reductive elimination on palladium(II) complexes.
