Hydrodynamic behaviors and mixing characteristics in an internal loop airlift reactor based on CFD simulation

A novel electrolytic gas lift reactor for efficient microbial electrosynthesis of acetate from carbon dioxide

The low current density impedes the practical application of microbial electrosynthesis for CO2 fixation. Engineering the reactor design is an effective way to increase the current density, especially for H2-mediated microbial electrosynthesis reactors. The electrolytic bubble column microbial electrosynthesis reactor has shown great potential for scaling up, but the mixing and gas mass transfer still need to be enhanced to further increase the current density. Here, we introduced an inner draft tube to the bubble column to tackle the problem. The addition of draft tube resulted in a 76.6% increase in the volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa) of H2, a 40% increase in the maximum current density (337 A/m2) and a 72% increase in average acetate production rate (3.1 g/L/d). The computational fluid dynamics simulations showed that the addition of draft tube enhanced mixing efficiency by enabling a more ordered cyclic flow pattern and a more uniform gas/liquid distribution. These results indicate that the electro-bubble column reactor with draft tube holds great potential for industrial implementation.

Photobioreactors for utility-scale applications: effect of gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient and other critical parameters

Cultivation of microalgae and controlling its growth and performance in closed photobioreactors (PBRs) are easier than open pond systems for wastewater treatment. The performance of PBRs is influenced by geometry, hydrodynamic behavior, and mass transfer. Horizontal and vertical configurations as common designs of PBR are reviewed based on their features, advantages, and disadvantages. However, vertically operated PBRs like bubble columns are preferably used for utility-scale applications of microalgae-based processes. Moreover, an appropriate reactor design reduces the inhibitory effect of dissolved oxygen concentration produced by microalgae and consequently increases the level of available CO₂ in the medium. Medium properties, superficial gas velocity, gas holdup, bubble sizes, shear stress, mixing time, sparger design, and the ratio of inner diameter to effective height are shown to influence the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient (K_La) and PBR's performance. The vertical PBRs like bubble columns provide a high mass transfer, a short liquid circulation time, and a long frequency of light/dark cycle for utility application of microalgae. Different flow regimes are obtained in PBRs based on the gas flow rate, inner diameter, and medium properties. Hydraulic retention time as the main operational parameter is determined in a batch mode for continuous wastewater treatment.

Achieving superior nitrogen removal in an air-lifting internal circulating reactor for municipal wastewater treatment: Performance, kinetic analysis, and microbial pathways

Anticipated growth in living standards has accentuated higher requirements for effluent quality from municipal wastewater treatment. In this study, an air-lifting internal circulating reactor with a high internal circulation ratio (36:1) was established to treat municipal wastewater with a long-term operation. In the bioreactor, the average effluent chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen could be 13.1, 5.7, and lower than 1 mg/L, respectively. Further analysis of nitrogen removal showed that traditional nitrification and denitrification, simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND), and nitrogen assimilation accounted for 27.4 %, 68.7 %, and 3.9 % respectively. The proportion of aerobic bacteria (Saprospiraceae) and facultative bacteria (Comamonadaceae) were significantly increased, indicating a higher capacity for organic degradation in the reactor. The relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria and bacterial groups with SND (Comamonadaceae) increased. These results suggested the air-lifting internal circulating reactor could be a viable and efficient option for superior nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment.

A Turbulent Mass Diffusivity Model for Predicting Species Concentration Distribution in the Biodegradation of Phenol Wastewater in an Airlift Reactor

In this study, a three-dimensional CFD transient model is established for predicting species concentration distribution in the biodegradation of phenol in an airlift reactor (ALR). The gas–liquid flow in the ALR is determined by the Euler–Euler method coupled with the standard k-ε model, and the bubble size is predicted by the population balance model (PBM). A turbulent mass diffusivity model is developed to simulate the turbulent mass transfer process and to predict the species concentration distribution. No empirical methods are needed as the turbulent mass diffusivity can be expressed by the concentration variance c2¯ and its dissipation rate εc. A good agreement is found between simulated and experimental results in the literature. It is not reasonable to assume a constant turbulent Schmidt number because the calculated distribution of turbulent mass diffusivity is not identical to that of turbulent viscosity. Finally, the hydrodynamic characteristics and biodegradation performance of the proposed model in a novel ALR are compared with that in the original ALR.

Hydrodynamics and mass transfer of concentric-tube internal loop airlift reactors: A review

The concentric-tube internal loop airlift reactor is a typical reactor configuration which has been adopted for a myriad of chemical and biological processes. The reactor hydrodynamics (including mixing) and the mass transfer between the gas and liquid phases remarkably affect the operational conditions and thus are crucial to the overall reactor performance. Hence, this study aims at providing a thorough description of the basic concepts and a comprehensive review of the relevant reported studies on the hydrodynamics and mass transfer of the concentric-tube internal loop airlift reactors, taking microalgae cultivation as an exemplary application. In particular, the reactor characteristics, geometry, CFD modeling, experimental characterization, and scale up considerations are elucidated. The research gaps for future research and development are also identified.

Investigation of Hydrodynamic Parameters in an Airlift Photobioreactor on CO2 Biofixation by Spirulina sp

The rise of CO2 concentration on Earth is a major environmental problem that causes global warming. To solve this issue, carbon capture and sequestration technologies are becoming more and more popular. Among them, cyanobacteria can efficiently sequestrate CO2, which is an eco-friendly and cost-effective way of reducing carbon dioxide, and algal biomass can be harvested as valuable products. In this study, the hydrodynamic parameters of an airlift photobioreactor such as gas holdup, mean bubble diameter and liquid circulation velocity were measured to investigate CO2 biofixation by Spirulina sp. The total gas holdup was found to increase linearly with the increase in the gas velocity from 0.185 to 1.936 cm/s. The mean bubble velocities in distilled water only and in the cyanobacterial culture on the first and sixth days of cultivation were 109.97, 87.98, and 65.89 cm/s, respectively. It was found that shear stress at gas velocities greater than 0.857 cm/s led to cyanobacterial death. After 7 days of batch culture, the maximum dry cell weight reached 1.62 g/L at the gas velocity of 0.524 cm/s, whereas the highest carbon dioxide removal efficiency by Spirulina sp. was 55.48% at a gas velocity of 0.185 cm/s, demonstrating that hydrodynamic parameters applied in this study were suitable to grow Spirulina sp. in the airlift photobioreactor and remove CO2.

A Detailed Hydrodynamic Study of the Split-Plate Airlift Reactor by Using Non-Invasive Gamma-Ray Techniques

This study focused on detailed investigations of selected local hydrodynamics in split airlift reactor by using an unconventional measurements facility: computed tomography (CT) and radioactive particle tracking (RPT). The local distribution in a cross-sectional manner with its radial’s profiles for gas holdup, liquid velocity flow field, shear stresses, and turbulent kinetic energy were studied under various gas velocity 1, 2 and 3 cm/s with various six axial level z = 12, 20, 40, 60, 90 and 112 cm. The distribution in gas–liquid phases in the whole split reactor column, the riser and downcomer sides, including their behavior at the top and bottom sections of the split plate was also described. The outcomes of this study displayed an exemplary gas–liquid phases dispersion approximately in all reactor’s zones and had large magnitude over the ring of the sparger as well as upper the split plate. Furthermore, the outcomes pointed out that the distribution of this flow may significantly impacts the performance of the split reactor, which may have essential influence on its performance particularly for microorganisms culturing applications. These outcomes are dependable as benchmark information to validate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and other models.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation of Hydrodynamics in a Two-Stage Internal Loop Airlift Reactor with Contraction-Expansion Guide Vane

Global circulation and liquid back mixing adversely affect the continuous production of a multistage internal airlift loop reactor. A contraction-expansion guide vane (CEGV) is proposed and combined with a two-stage internal loop airlift reactor (TSILALR) to suppress the liquid back mixing between stages. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is conducted to evaluate the performance of the CEGV in the TSILALR. The bubble size distribution and turbulent flow properties in the TSILALR are considered in the CFD simulation by using the population balance model and RNG k-ε turbulence model. The CFD model is validated against the experimental results. The deviations in the gas holdup and mean bubble diameter between the simulation and experimental results are less than 8% and 6%, respectively. The streamlines, flow pattern, bubble size distribution, and axial liquid velocity in the TSILALRs with and without the CEGV at superficial velocities of 0.04 and 0.08 m/s are obtained by CFD simulation. It has been shown that the CEGV generated local circulation flows at each stage instead of a global circulation flow in the TSILALR. The average global gas holdup in the TSILALR with a CEGV increased up to 1.98 times. The global gas holdup increased from 0.045 to 0.101 and the average axial velocity in the riser decreased from 0.314 to 0.241 m/s when the width of the CEGV increased from 50 to 75 mm at the superficial gas velocity of 0.08 m/s.

Computational fluid dynamics modeling of carbon dioxide capture from air using biocatalyst in an airlift reactor

In this work, a novel three-phase and three dimensional CFD model based on the Euler-Euler approach developed for modeling the hydrodynamic, mass transfer and CO₂ fixation using microalgae in an internal loop airlift reactor with internal sparger. The main objective of this work was to development of CFD codes in order to simulate the CO₂ biofixation process under different input gas velocity during 11 days of culture time and simulate the unsteady state mass transfer based on Surface-Renewal-Stretch (SRS) model. The CFD results were compared with the our previous experimental work and they showed good agreement with a margin of less than 10%. This paper illustrated the ability of the CFD in complex process simulation such as CO₂ biofixation in the airlift reactor and provided a useful basis for further study.
