Shear rate and mass transfer coefficient in internal loop airlift reactors involving non-Newtonian fluids

Microbubbles intensification and mechanism of wet air oxidation process of MDEA-containing wastewater

In order to the intensification of gas-liquid mass transfer of MDEA-containing wastewater during wet air oxidation (WAO) process, the microbubbles and millimetre bubbles were applied by fine-pore sparger (5 and 20-30 μm) and single pore sparger (6.35 mm), respectively. Effect of the superficial gas velocity on the average microbubble size, gas holdup and oxygen mass transfer coefficient (K_La) of MDEA-containing wastewater at the ambient conditions was studied. The results showed that the microbubbles (less than 1 mm) were beneficial to enhance mass transfer process and had a higher dissolved oxygen concentration during WAO process of MDEA-containing wastewater owing to higher gas holdup and larger oxygen mass transfer coefficient. The COD removal ratio was 66% at low superficial gas velocity (u_g= 0.3 cm/s) in WAO process by microbubbles, while it achieved at high superficial gas velocity (u_g= 3.0 cm/s) by millimetre bubbles. The critical oxygen mass transfer coefficient K_La was 0.183 min^-1 of MDEA-containing wastewater by 20-30 and 5 μm fine pore sparger, which was 2∼5 times more than that of single pore sparger (<0.1 min^-1). The microbubbles could improve dissolved oxygen concentration and enhance the formation of hydroxyl radical at short time with atmospheric pressure. During the WAO process, the MDEA would be converted into intermediates including formic acid, acetic acid, ammonium, nitrite and nitrate. The WAO process with microbubbles could significantly improve the gas-liquid mass transfer performance at low superficial gas velocity and greatly reduce air consumption for MDEA-containing wastewater.

Hydrodynamics and mass transfer of concentric-tube internal loop airlift reactors: A review

The concentric-tube internal loop airlift reactor is a typical reactor configuration which has been adopted for a myriad of chemical and biological processes. The reactor hydrodynamics (including mixing) and the mass transfer between the gas and liquid phases remarkably affect the operational conditions and thus are crucial to the overall reactor performance. Hence, this study aims at providing a thorough description of the basic concepts and a comprehensive review of the relevant reported studies on the hydrodynamics and mass transfer of the concentric-tube internal loop airlift reactors, taking microalgae cultivation as an exemplary application. In particular, the reactor characteristics, geometry, CFD modeling, experimental characterization, and scale up considerations are elucidated. The research gaps for future research and development are also identified.

Enhanced Biodesulfurization with a Microbubble Strategy in an Airlift Bioreactor with Haloalkaliphilic Bacterium Thioalkalivibrio versutus D306

Biodesulfurization under haloalkaline conditions requires limiting oxygen and additional energy in the system to deliver high mixing quality control. This study considers biodesulfurization in an airlift bioreactor with uniform microbubbles generated by a fluidic oscillation aeration system to enhance the biological desulfurization process and its hydrodynamics. Fluidic oscillation aeration in an airlift bioreactor requires minimal energy input for microbubble generation. This aeration system produced 81.87% smaller average microbubble size than the direct aeration system in a bubble column bioreactor. The biodesulfurization phase achieved a yield of 94.94% biological sulfur, 84.91% biological sulfur selectivity, and 5.06% sulfur oxidation performance in the airlift bioreactor with the microbubble strategy. The biodesulfurization conditions of thiosulfate via Thioalkalivibrio versutus D306 are revealed in this study. The biodesulfurization conditions in the airlift bioreactor with the fluidic oscillation aeration system resulted in the complete conversion of thiosulfate with 27.64% less sulfate production and 10.34% more biological sulfur production than in the bubble column bioreactor. Therefore, pleasant hydrodynamics via an airlift bioreactor mechanism with microbubbles is favored for biodesulfurization under haloalkaline conditions.

Enhancing biomass, lipid production, and nutrient utilization of the microalga Monoraphidium sp. QLZ-3 in walnut shell extracts supplemented with carbon dioxide

Microalgae are a promising biofuel resource, but their high cost and low productivity hinder their commercial applications. In the present study, Monoraphidium sp. QLZ-3 was cultivated in walnut shell extracts (WSE) supplemented with carbon dioxide (CO₂). Biomass was enhanced from 0.40 g L^-1 to 1.18 g L^-1, and lipid content reached 49.54% in WSE-12% CO₂ media. Biomass and lipid productivity reached 196.88 and 97.52 mg L^-1 d^-1, which were 1.33- and 1.57-fold higher than those of the control, respectively. The amount of carbohydrates increased, but the protein contents decreased. Furthermore, the application of CO₂ promoted nutrient and polyphenol absorption and upregulated the expression levels of lipid biosynthetic genes of this WSE-cultivated alga. These results indicated that coupling WSE and CO₂ could be an efficient strategy to enhance biofuel production by microalgae.
