A Critical Review on Electric Field-Assisted Membrane Processes: Implications for Fouling Control, Water Recovery, and Future Prospects

Electrofiltration, an electric field-assisted membrane process, has been a research topic of growing popularity due to its ability to improve membrane performance by providing in situ antifouling conditions in a membrane system. The number of reports on electrofiltration have increased exponentially over the past two decades. These reports explored many innovations, such as novel configurations of an electric field, engineered membrane materials, and interesting designs of foulant compositions and membrane modules. Recent electrofiltration literature focused mainly on compiling results without a comprehensive comparative analysis across different works. The main objective of this critical review is to, first, organize, compare and contrast the results across various electrofiltration studies; second, discuss various types of mechanisms that could be incorporated into electrofiltration and their effect on membrane system performance; third, characterize electrofiltration phenomenon; fourth, interpret the effects of various operational conditions on the performance of electrofiltration; fifth, evaluate the state-of-the-art knowledge associated with modeling efforts in electrofiltration; sixth, discuss the energy costs related to the implementation of electrofiltration; and finally, identify the current knowledge gaps that hinder the transition of the lab-scale observations to industry-scale electrofiltration as well as the future prospects of electrofiltration.

Influence of oil droplet behavior in electrochemical micromembrane cells on treating oil/water emulsions with low-salt concentrations

Although flow-through electrode has demonstrated its potential in treating oily wastewater, few studies noted influence of oil droplet behavior on treating oil/water emulsions. In order to explore the influence of oil droplet behavior in a flow-through electrode cell on treating oil/water emulsions with low-salt concentrations, an electrochemical micromembrane cell was applied to treat oil/water emulsions with 0-0.8 g/L NaCl. High chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction (80-90%) was obtained in treating Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) or Tween 80 emulsion by flow-through electrode, while the later had the higher permeate flux (900 mL/min around). The low salt concentration (0.5 g/L NaCl) achieved high COD reduction (87%) and good permeate flux (600 mL/min). Observations using optical microscopy revealed severe deformation of the shape of the charged oil droplet at the flow-through electrode interface. The wetting of oil droplets at the electrode interface occurred when the membrane acted as an anode, which resulted in flow-through electrode fouling, and subsequently, the reduction in permeate flux and treatment efficiency. The results of this study offer an attractive option when using flow-through electrode to treat oil-in-water emulsions under low-salinity conditions.

Adsorptive removal of oil spill from sea water surface using magnetic wood sawdust as a novel nano-composite synthesized via microwave approach

Water pollution by oil is a serious environmental problem. Developing new generation of benign adsorbents satisfying several criteria required for real practical application is of great need. This work introduces an effort in this direction, by utilizing a facile synthesis of wood sawdust coated magnetite nanoparticles functionalized stearic acid (WSD@Fe₃O₄NPs/SA) as a novel nano composite along with its precursor WSD@Fe₃O₄NPs. SA was covalently bonded to the precursor by amide bond formation via the interaction with the silylating agent 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (3-APTS). This mode of binding is more stronger than the conventional ester bond. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X- ray powder diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Transmittance electron microscope (TEM) were employed for characterization and follow up the synthesis process. Application of the newly synthesized magnetic nano composite adsorbent under optimized parameters of contact time (min) and composite dosage (g) reveal high removal capacity values (g/g) evaluated to be 28.32 g/g, 5 min and 0.1 g for used motor oil removal and 41.22 g/g, 10 min and 0.1 g for crude oil. The high removal efficiency exhibited by WSD@Fe₃O₄NPs/SA was mainly argued to the long hydrocarbon chain of SA moiety and additional ـــ (CH₂)₃ ـــ groups incorporated 3-ATPS. Moreover, Analysis of the oil adsorption experimental equilibrium data were well fitted with Freundlish model with correlation coefficients r² = 0.9788 and 0.9896 for used motor oil and crude oil, respectively. The kinetic data were correlated using two kinetic models and the results were in harmony with pseudo-second order.
