Direct filtration procedure to attain antibacterial TFC membrane: A facile developing route of membrane surface properties and fouling resistance

High durability of food due to the flow cytometry proved antibacterial and antifouling properties of TiO2 decorated nanocomposite films

Although polymeric membrane has superior properties, its applications in biomedical and food industrial fields are minimal. Biofouling is a significant concern in the membrane, created from particular interactions between the membrane and untreated water content. This research showed that a careful superhydrophilic modification of polyethersulfone membrane could address those drawbacks that have hindered their utility. Hence, a combination of chemical and physical modification showed far-reaching effects on surface behavior, affecting manifold aspects of its bacterial attachment, protein adsorption resistance, and hydrophilicity. The contact angle measurement results decreased from 30° to 0° in 26 s, and surface free energy increased by 33%, demonstrating the shifting surface wettability behavior toward the Superhydrophilicity. Besides, increasing the average surface roughness on the nanoscale and forming 70-110 nm jagged structures results in a marked reduction in protein adsorption, bacterial adhesion, and biofouling formation, confirmed by the results of Flow cytometry analysis and microtiter plate assay. An improved understanding of antifouling and antibacterial properties will greatly assist in food industries since it can be applied to enhance the durability of food and chemical materials. This is important as it gives us a simple way of improving packing reliability, reducing costs and amounts of undesirable waste products.

Novel Biodegradable Poly (Lactic Acid)/Wood Leachate Composites: Investigation of Antibacterial, Mechanical, Morphological, and Thermal Properties

This research aimed to investigate the effects of using wood leachate (WL) powder as a cost-effective filler added to novel poly (lactic acid) biocomposites and evaluate their mechanical, thermal, morphological, and antibacterial properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), tensile test, Charpy impact test, Shore hardness, scanning electron microscope (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), contact angle, and bacterial growth inhibition tests were employed to characterize the developed biocomposites. The SEM results indicated a proper filler dispersion in the polymer matrix. WL powder improved the hydrophobic nature in the adjusted sample’s contact angle experiment. Markedly, the results showed that the addition of WL filler improved the mechanical properties of the fabricated biocomposites. The thermal analysis determined the development in crystallization behavior and a decline in glass transition temperature (Tg) from 60.1 to 49.3 °C in 7% PLA-WL biocomposites. The PLA-WL biocomposites exhibited an antibacterial activity according to the inhibition zone for Escherichia coli bacteria. The developed novel PLA-WL composites can be effectively utilized in various value-added industrial applications as a sustainable and functional biopolymer material.

Multifunctional Properties of Binary Polyrhodanine Manganese Ferrite Nanohybrids-From the Energy Converters to Biological Activity

The PRHD@MnFe₂O₄ binary hybrids have shown a potential for applications in the biomedical field. The polymer cover/shell provides sufficient surface protection of magnetic nanoparticles against adverse effects on the biological systems, e.g., it protects against Fenton’s reactions and the generation of highly toxic radicals. The heating ability of the PRHD@MnFe₂O₄ was measured as a laser optical density (LOD) dependence either for powders as well as nanohybrid dispersions. Dry hybrids exposed to the action of NIR radiation (808 nm) can effectively convert energy into heat that led to the enormous temperature increase ΔT 170 °C (>190 °C). High concentrated colloidal suspensions (5 mg/mL) can generate ΔT of 42 °C (65 °C). Further optimization of the nanohybrids amount and laser parameters provides the possibility of temperature control within a biologically relevant range. Biological interactions of PRHD@MnFe₂O₄ hybrids were tested using three specific cell lines: macrophages (RAW 264.7), osteosarcoma cells line (UMR-106), and stromal progenitor cells of adipose tissue (ASCs). It was shown that the cell response was strongly dependent on hybrid concentration. Antimicrobial activity of the proposed composites against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was confirmed, showing potential in the exploitation of the fabricated materials in this field.

Photocatalytic study of nanocomposite membrane modified by CeF3 catalyst for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment

Cerium fluoride (CeF₃) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and applied in polysulfone (PS) membrane fabricated by phase inversion method. The produced nanocomposite membranes (PS/CeF₃) with different contents of CeF3 NPS (0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75% and 1% w/w) were used to treat pharmaceutical wastewaters. The membranes were characterized by FESEM, EDX, XRD, FTIR, porosity, and water contact angle analyses. Evaluation of the characteristics and performance of the nanocomposite membranes confirmed that utilizing photocatalytic CeF₃ NPs in membrane structure could effectively decompose organic contaminants in pharmaceutical wastewaters. It also improves the hydrophilicity and antifouling ability of membrane during filtration especially, in the presence of UV irradiation. The permeate flux of the PS membrane increased from 35.1 to 63.77 l/m²h by embedding 0.75% of CeF₃ NPs in membrane structure due to the porosity enhancement from 71.36-78.42% and the decrease in contact angle from 62.9º to 53.73º. Moreover, the flux decline of PS/CeF₃-0.75% membrane under UV irradiation was from 63.6 to 46.1 l/m²h that considerably lower than that of the neat PS membrane (from 34.7 to 4.9). On the other hand, the degradation efficiency of PS/CeF₃-0.75% membrane was more than 97%, and COD removed was more than 65% while they were 75% and 31%, respectively for the nascent PS membrane. Therefore, applying the appropriate amount of CeF₃ NPs in PS membranes not only greatly increased the permeate flux but also significantly enhanced the degradation efficiency and COD removal. This indicates that nanocomposite membranes can be confidently applied for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment UV irradiation.

Obtainment and Characterization of Hydrophilic Polysulfone Membranes by N-Vinylimidazole Grafting Induced by Gamma Irradiation

Polysulfone (PSU) film and N-vinylimidazole (VIM) were used to obtain grafted membranes with high hydrophilic capacity. The grafting process was performed by gamma irradiation under two experiments: (1) different irradiation doses (100-400 kGy) and VIM 50% solution; (2) different concentration of grafted VIM (30-70%) and 300 kGy of irradiation dose. Characteristics of the grafted membranes were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle, swelling degree, desalination test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Both experiments indicated that the absorbed dose 300 kGy and the VIM concentration, at 50% v/v, were effective to obtain PSU grafted membranes with 14.3% of grafting yield. Nevertheless, experimental conditions, 400 kGy, VIM 50% and 300 kGy, VIM 60-70% promoted possible membrane degradation and VIM homopolymerization on the membrane surface, which was observed by SEM images; meanwhile, 100-200 kGy and VIM 30-50% produced minimal grafting (2 ± 0.5%). Hydrophilic surface of the grafted PSU membranes by 300 kGy and VIM 50% v/v were corroborated by the water contact angle, swelling degree and desalination test, showing a decrease from 90.7° ± 0.3 (PSU film) to 64.3° ± 0.5; an increment of swelling degree of 25 ± 1%, and a rejection-permeation capacity of 75 ± 2%. In addition, the thermal behavior of grafted PSU membranes registered an increment in the degradation of 20%, due to the presence of VIM. However, the normal temperature of the membrane operation did not affect this result; meanwhile, the glass transition temperature (T_g) of the grafted PSU membrane was found at 185.4 ± 0.5 °C, which indicated an increment of 15 ± 1%.
