Improvement of dye and protein filtration efficiency using modified PES membrane with 2-mercaptoethanol capped zinc sulfide quantum dots

Green tea waste-derived carbon dots: efficient degradation of RhB dye and selective sensing of Cu2+ ions

Herein, we have synthesized carbon dots (CDs) using a one-step hydrothermal method from green tea waste, a biomass-derived source with high fluorescent properties and excellent solubility in water. The synthesis of CDs was confirmed through a comprehensive range of characterization techniques, including HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and EDX (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). The optical properties of the synthesized CDs were assessed using UV-Vis spectroscopy and fluorescence (FL) spectroscopy. The CDs displayed exceptional stability across a wide pH range and various concentrations. Moreover, these CDs exhibited a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 21.6%, indicating their efficiency in emitting fluorescent light upon excitation. The CDs also showcased their prowess in fluorometrically detecting Cu2+ ions, displaying high sensitivity and selectivity. They presented two distinct linear ranges: 0.02 to 50 µM and 50 to 100 µM, with recovery rates ranging from 94.2 to 104.06%. Moreover, under visible light irradiation, the CDs exhibited significant efficiency in the photocatalytic removal of dyes. Specifically, the CDs achieved degradation rate of 97.89% for Rhodamine B (RhB) within a 30-min irradiation period. In the context of RhB adsorption, it is evident that the experimental data align more closely with the Freundlich isotherm than the Langmuir isotherm. This is substantiated by a higher R2 value (0.97) for the Freundlich isotherm model compared to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model (0.93). Notably, the adsorption kinetics was effectively described by pseudo first-order kinetics models. Overall, these results highlight the promising potential of CDs in applications such as environmental remediation and waste treatment processes due to their photocatalytic and sensing capabilities.

Synthesis of PES membranes modified with polyurethane-paraffin wax nanocapsules and performance of bovine serum albumin and humic acid rejection

Membrane fouling is a serious handicap of membrane-based separation, as it reduces permeation flux and hence increases operational and maintenance expenses. Polyurethane-paraffin wax (PU/PW) nanocapsules were integrated into the polyethersulfone membrane to manufacture a composite membrane with higher antifouling and permeability performance against humic acid (HA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) foulants. All manufactured membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), and contact angle. The contact angle of the pristine polyethersulfone (PES) membrane was measured 73.40 ± 1.32. With the embedding of nanocapsules, the contact angle decreased to 64.55 ± 1.23 for PES/PU/PW 2.0 wt%, and the pure water flux of all composite membranes increased when compared to pristine PES. The pristine PES membrane also has shown the lowest steady-state fluxes at 45.84 and 46.59 L/m2h for BSA and HA, respectively. With the increase of PU/PW nanocapsule ratio from 0.5 to 1.0 wt%, steady-state fluxes increased from 51.96 to 71.61 and from 67.87 to 98.73 L/m2h, respectively, for BSA and HA. The results depicted that BSA and HA rejection efficiencies of PU/PW nanocapsules blended PES membranes increased when compared to pristine PES membranes.

An integrated MDC-FO membrane configuration for simultaneous desalination, wastewater treatment and energy recovery

A novel microbial desalination cell (MDC) configuration was developed by introducing a forward osmosis (FO) membrane, separating the cathode chamber from a fourth extra chamber. Wastewater is treated using a sequential anode-cathode feed. The new chamber then serves as a FO draw chamber, where a saline solution is used to recover freshwater from the adjacent cathode chamber. The diluted saline solution then goes to the MDC middle chamber for further desalination. Three identical cells were constructed and operated in cyclic-batch-flow mode at different initial wastewater and saline solution concentrations. Up to 84.8 ± 1.7% of the wastewater was recovered as freshwater. Freshwater recovery decreases at lower salt concentrations and higher wastewater COD concentrations due to the lower osmotic pressure difference. Salinity of saline water was decreased by up to 69.57 ± 3.85% at the highest initial salinity. COD removal up to 94.42 ± 4.15% was reached. COD removal rates were higher at higher COD concentrations. Polarization curves show the effect of COD on the internal resistance, where cells operated at lower COD experienced higher internal resistance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed the extent of fouling on the ion exchange membrane and biofilm formation on the FO membranes and the electrodes.

Chemical recycling of polyester textile wastes using silver-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles: an economical solution for circular economy

The waste management of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-derived polyester (PES) textile is a global issue, and material recovery through chemical recycling can restore a circular economy. In our investigation, microwave-induced catalytic aminolysis and glycolysis of PES textile wastes using Ag-doped ZnO nanoparticles have been proposed. Ag-doped ZnO is prepared by the sol-gel method and characterised by XRD, FT-IR, UV-Vis, SEM-EDX and TEM. The reaction parameters such as PET-to-catalyst ratio, microwave power and irradiation time, temperature and catalyst recycling have been optimised. The catalyst was found to be more stable and could be recycled up to six times without losing its activity. Both the aminolysis and glycolysis of PES showed 100% conversion and afforded of bis (2-hydroxy ethylene) terephthalamide (BHETA) and bis (2-hydroxy ethylene) terephthalate (BHET), respectively. The depolymerisation of PES wastes using Ag-doped ZnO afforded BHETA and BHET for about 95 and 90%, respectively. The monomers BHET and BHETA confirmed by FT-IR, ¹H NMR and mass spectroscopy. According to the findings, 2 mol% Ag-doped ZnO has higher catalytic activity.

The Effectiveness of Polyvinylidene Fluoride Membranes Modified with Poloxamer and Single/Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Lactalbumin Purification

The application of separation technology using ultrafiltration/nanofiltration membranes for protein purification and concentration has grown rapidly in the last decade. Innovations to synthesize membranes with properties and performance that suit the characteristics of the feed solution have been and will keep developing. This study aims to examine the strategies to improve the performance of the Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) membrane for lactalbumin protein isolation. The PVDF polymer membrane was modified by adding Poloxamer 188 (Po1) copolymer and a combination of two types of nanocarbons, i.e., single-walled carbon nanotubes (S-CnT) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (M-CnT). The following membrane characteristics were examined: mechanical properties, morphological structure, porosity, elemental composition and functional groups, and surface hydrophilicity. The membrane’s filtration performance was analyzed in terms of its ability to pass water (flux) and concentrate lactalbumin protein. The results showed that the changes in the membrane morphological structure were clearly visible in the SEM test, which exposed more open membrane pores after adding Pol and S-CnT/M-CnT additives. The mechanical properties of the membrane also increased, as indicated by the increase in the tensile strength from 12.1 MPa to 16.07 MPa. In general, it was found that the composition of the PVDF/Pol/S-CnT/NMP polymer solutions resulted in better filtration performance compared to the membranes made of only the PVDF/NMP polymer solution.

Natural Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastic ENR/PVC Composites as Potential Membrane Technology in Industrial Wastewater Treatment: A Review

Membrane separation processes are prevalent in industrial wastewater treatment because they are more effective than conventional methods at addressing global water issues. Consequently, the ideal membranes with high mechanical strength, thermal characteristics, flux, permeability, porosity, and solute removal capacity must be prepared to aid in the separation process for wastewater treatment. Rubber-based membranes have shown the potential for high mechanical properties in water separation processes to date. In addition, the excellent sustainable practice of natural fibers has attracted great attention from industrial players and researchers for the exploitation of polymer composite membranes to improve the balance between the environment and social and economic concerns. The incorporation of natural fiber in thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) as filler and pore former agent enhances the mechanical properties, and high separation efficiency characteristics of membrane composites are discussed. Furthermore, recent advancements in the fabrication technique of porous membranes affected the membrane's structure, and the performance of wastewater treatment applications is reviewed.

Different metal-doped ZnS quantum dots photocatalysts for enhancing the permeability and antifouling performances of polysulfone membranes with and without UV irradiation

In this study, the effect of three different transition metal ion dopants (Mn²⁺, Fe^2+, and Co²⁺) on the characteristics of zinc sulfide (ZnS) quantum dots (QDs) was investigated and the obtained QDs photocatalysts were applied for the modification of polysulfone (PSf) mixed matrix membranes to reduce membrane fouling. The synthesized QDs and fabricated membranes were fully identified with SEM, TEM, AFM, FTIR analyses, and also underwent porosity and contact angle tests. Flux recovery ratios (FRR) significantly increased from 69.8% (bare) to 85.0% (1% Fe-doped ZnS QDs) after modification of membranes with metal-doped QDs. The contact angles of the prepared membranes decreased with doping of dissimilar metals, therefore hydrophilicity increased, and reversible/non-reversible blockages were improved. Besides, the use of UV irradiation during the washing of the membranes increased the FRR of the photocatalytic activated membranes to 91.2%. Compared to the bare PSf membrane in dye solution filtration, 1% Fe-doped ZnS QDs membrane yielded twice as much flux and 15% higher FRR results. Therefore, the results proved that metal-doped QDs can be used in the modification of PSf membranes with high efficiency.

Antimicrobial Hydrophilic Membrane Formed by Incorporation of Polymeric Surfactant and Patchouli Oil

Membrane properties are highly affected by the composition of the polymer solutions that make up the membrane material and their influence in the filtration performance on the separation or purification process. This paper studies the effects of the addition of pluronic (Plu) and patchouli oil (PO) in a polyethersulfone (PES) solution on the membrane morphology, membrane hydrophilicity, and filtration performance in the pesticide removal compound in the water sample. Three types of membranes with the composition of PES, PES + Plu, and PES + Plu + patchouli oil were prepared through a polymer phase inversion technique in an aqueous solvent. The resulting membranes were then analyzed and tested for their mechanical properties, hydrophilicity, antimicrobial properties, and filtration performance (cross-flow ultrafiltration). The results show that all of the prepared membranes could reject 75% of the pesticide. The modification of the PES membrane with Plu was shown to increase the overall pore size by altering the pore morphology of the pristine PES, which eventually increased the permeation flux of the ultrafiltration process. Furthermore, patchouli oil added antimicrobial properties, potentially minimizing the biofilm formation on the membrane surface.

Synthesis and Characterization of Sr-Doped ZnSe Nanoparticles for Catalytic and Biological Activities

The development of cost-effective and ecofriendly approaches toward water purification and antibacterial activity is a hot research topic in this era. Purposely, strontium-doped zinc selenide (Sr-doped ZnSe) nanoparticles, with different molar ratios of Sr2+ cations (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1), were prepared via the co-precipitation method, in which sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and 2-mercaptoethanol were employed as reducing and stabilizing agents, respectively. The ZnSe cubic structure expanded by Sr2+ cations was indicated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The absorption of the chemical compounds on the surface was observed via Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The optical orientation was measured by ultraviolet–visible diffused reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS) analysis. The surface area, morphology, and elemental purity were analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses. The oxidation state and valency of the synthesized nanoparticles were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Sr-doped ZnSe nanoparticles were investigated for photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO), and their antibacterial potential was investigated against different bacterial strains. The antibacterial activity examined against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli implied the excellent biological activity of the nanoparticles. Moreover, the Sr-doped ZnSe nanoparticles were evaluated by the successful degradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation. Therefore, Sr-doped ZnSe nanoparticles have tremendous potential in biological and water remediation fields.
