Associations between motor proficiency in children with history of maltreatment and living in social economically vulnerability

Repeated maternal non-responsiveness to baby's crying during postpartum and infant neuropsychological development: The Japan Environment and Children's Study

BACKGROUND

Longitudinal adverse effects of neglect-related behaviors during postpartum, especially repeated maternal non-responsiveness to the crying baby on their neuropsychological developmental trajectory, have not been fully clarified.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to examine the association between postpartum maternal neglect-related behaviors and infant neuropsychological outcomes using the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).

PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING

JECS data on 100,286 mother-child pairs were analyzed. Explanatory variables were "frequency of leaving the baby alone at home" (i.e., leaving the baby alone at home) and "frequency of ignoring the baby when he or she cries" (i.e., ignoring the crying baby) at one month postpartum. The outcomes were measured using the Japanese version of the Ages & Stages Questionnaires-Third Edition (J-ASQ-3).

METHODS

After multiple imputations, logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between neglect-related behaviors and the J-ASQ-3 domains at each age.

RESULTS

The "sometimes or more" group of "ignoring the crying baby" from six months to three years reported relatively consistent significant associations with developmental delay in communication (maximum adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.456, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.261-1.682), gross motor (maximum aOR: 1.279, 95% CI: 1.159-1.411), fine motor (maximum aOR: 1.274, 95% CI: 1.113-1.457), problem-solving (maximum aOR: 1.178, 95% CI: 1.104-1.256), and personal-social domains (maximum aOR: 1.326, 95% CI: 1.255-1.402). The adverse effects of "leaving the baby alone at home" disappeared in many domains by the age of one.

CONCLUSIONS

Repeated maternal non-responsiveness to baby's crying during postpartum may suppress multiple neuropsychological development during early childhood.

The Relationship between Social Environmental Factors and Motor Performance in 3- to 12-Year-Old Typically Developing Children: A Systematic Review

Motor performance during childhood is important for prosperity in life, and the social environment may contain potentially important and modifiable factors associated with motor performance. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to identify social environmental factors associated with motor performance in 3- to 12-year-old typically developing children. Four electronic databases were searched, which resulted in 31 included studies. The methodological quality was determined using the Quality of Prognosis Studies in Systematic Reviews tool. Most studies were conducted in 3-6-year-old children. In the home environment, parental beliefs in the importance of physical activity and parental behaviors matching these beliefs were related to better motor performance of children, although these relationships were often sex-dependent. The school and sports environments were investigated much less, but some preliminary evidence was found that being better liked by peers, attending a classroom with a smaller age range, having more interaction with the teacher and classmates, and having a higher educated teacher was related to better motor performance. Further research is required to further unravel the relationship between the social environment and motor skills, with a specific focus on 6-12-year-old children and environments outside of the home environment.

Interfaces of vulnerability dimensions in violence against children

OBJECTIVE

present and discuss the potential use of the concept of vulnerability for the development of practices to address violence against children.

METHOD

this is a theoretical study that presents the characteristics of the phenomenon of violence against children, to which the concept of vulnerability is applied.

RESULTS

proposal of a framework for the analysis of violence against children in the perspective of vulnerability, creating individual and collective dimensions. Violence against children, when analyzed in the perspective of this concept, broadens the understanding of this phenomenon, as it exposes aspects and conditions from outside the family that are co-responsible for the occurrence of this phenomenon.

CONCLUSION

developing studies to identify the vulnerability of children to violence is essential for the development of practices to address this issue.

Girls From Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Schools Exhibit Greater Object Control Skills Than Girls From Schools on the Upper Levels of Socioeconomic Development

This study compared fundamental movement skills (FMS) in children from schools on the lower and upper levels of socioeconomic status. Data were collected from 228 schoolchildren across five schools in Ireland. There were 147 children from schools of social disadvantage (Mage  = 7.67 [SD = 0.62] years; 55% boys) and 81 children from schools considered in the normal range for socioeconomic development (Mage  = 7.34 [SD = 0.26] years; 56% boys). FMS were assessed using the Test of Gross Motor Development–2. Mixed models were used to estimate differences in FMS, while controlling for the nested structure of the data and for sex, age, body mass index, and class size. There was a substantial sex×school interaction, with girls from schools of social disadvantage exhibiting greater object-control skills proficiency than their counterparts in schools on the upper tertiles of socioeconomic development (standardized effect size = 0.66 [±95% confidence limits, ±0.50]; p = .02). The suggestion that children from social disadvantage are delayed in FMS is unsupported in this cohort. Differences in the structure of physical education and types of sports undertaken by children in schools of social disadvantage in Ireland are considered as explanations for this departure from previous studies.

Developmental abnormalities of the brain exposed to childhood maltreatment detected by diffusion tensor imaging

Objective: This study aimed to investigate brain developmental alterations in individuals exposed to childhood maltreatment (CM) with dissociative experiences and motor coordination symptoms using diffusion tensor imaging on a 3Tesla (3T) magnetic resonance (MR) system. Methods: Five individuals exposed to CM who manifest behavioral and developmental problems with dissociative experiences and motor coordination symptoms (age range: 14-18 years; all female), as well as seven age- and gender-matched normal control individuals, participated in the study using a 3T MR system. Diffusion characteristics, as indexed by fractional anisotropy (FA), were assessed for cerebral white matter structures. A preliminary whole brain analysis was performed complementary to an anatomically guided region of interest (ROI) analysis. Results: In individuals exposed to CM, scattered decreases in FA were detected in multiple brain regions over the frontoparietal and temporal areas in the whole brain map. ROI analysis subsequently identified significant decreases in FA (p < 0.05) in the right parietal white matter area as well as in the right prefrontal, bilateral premotor, bilateral orbitofrontal, and temporal white matter areas in CM-exposed individuals compared to that in controls. Conclusion: The observed altered diffusion characteristics indicate attendant developmental abnormalities within the white matter structures, which are associated with the observed clinical and behavioral patterns including dissociative experiences and coordination symptoms in individuals exposed to CM. The study provides objective evidence regarding the effects of CM on brain microstructure.
