Sustainable competitive advantage in maternal and child health institutions: a dynamic capability approach

China's government has always attached great importance to protecting women and children's rights and has made a consistent effort to promote their all-round health. The on-going medical reforms in the country have resulted in a falling birth rate and rising demand for increasingly diversified, multi-level healthcare services. Maternal and child health (MCH) institutions have had to implement more extensive changes and deal with greater challenges in order to survive and develop. MCH organizations thus need to find ways to improve their competitiveness. This study integrates qualitative and quantitative business analytics methods by conducting empirical research using varied techniques, namely the Delphi method and analytic hierarchy process (AHP). A panel of experts were consulted in three rounds of surveys, and the results were processed with AHP in order to develop an evaluation indicator model of MCH institutions' competitive advantages. Ten hospitals were selected to verify the model's applicability. Sensitivity analysis confirmed that the model has good stability. The proposed model highlights that human resources have the greatest weight as a determinant of competitive advantage. The findings, therefore, concentrate on people as the core resource, suggesting that MCH institutions can acquire and maintain competitive advantages based on three dimensions: department leader development, improved scientific research capacity, and a more flexible hospital culture.

What's In It for Me? Motivating the Untreated Abuser to Consider Treatment

This paper presents findings of a second trial evaluating telephone-based motivational enhancement therapy (MET) to motivate untreated and unadjudicated men who abuse their intimate partners to explore treatment options. Participants' perceptions of how their abuse is negatively affecting them personally are a highlight of the paper. One hundred forty-one adult men were recruited through social marketing and randomly assigned to the intervention (MET) or comparison (Mail) group. The MET condition consisted of two feedback sessions guided by a personalized feedback report on participants' intimate partner violence (IPV) and substance use. The Mail condition included a mailed educational brochure on IPV and substance use. Results supported the likely effectiveness of MET in short-term reduction of IPV behavior, marijuana use, and increasing motivation for treatment seeking particularly for participants who reported more adverse consequences of IPV to themselves. Findings emphasize the importance of including a focus in interventions on IPV's impact on the abusers themselves. The study's virtual participation and success in reaching and retaining a diverse population of male abusers can contribute to transformative justice and communities looking for alternative early interventions for men of color prior to encountering the criminal justice system.

Threads of Practice: Enhanced Maternal and Child Health Nurses Working With Women Experiencing Family Violence

Family violence is a serious public health issue with significant health consequences for women and children. Enhanced Maternal and Child Health nurses (EMCH) in Victoria, Australia, work with women experiencing family violence; however, scholarly examination of the clinical work of nurses has not occurred. This qualitative study explored how EMCH nurses work with women experiencing abuse, describing the personal and professional challenges for nurses undertaking family violence work. Twenty-five nurses participated in semi-structured interviews. Using interpretive description methodology has enabled an insight into nurses' family violence work. Threads of practice identified included (1) Validating/Reframing; (2) Non-judgmental support/Safeguarding and (3) Following/Leading. The nurses highlighted the diversity of experience for women experiencing abuse and nurses' roles in family violence nurse practice. The research contributes to understanding how EMCH nurses traverse threads of practice to support women experiencing family violence.
