Effect of storage states on stability of three organophosphorus insecticide residues on cowpea samples

BACKGROUND

The stability of pesticide residues in stored samples is very important to ensure the quality of data about the residues. The evaluation of pesticide residues in food and environment samples is an important means to ensure food quality and protect consumers against potential dietary risks. Improper storage of pesticide residue samples may result in loss of pesticide and unreliable data, which could affect safety assessments.

RESULTS

The influences of storage conditions, including temperature (-20 °C, 4 °C, and ambient temperature) and sample state (homogenized state and coarsely chopped state) on the storage stability of dichlorvos, malathion, and diazinon on cowpea were studied. Dichlorvos and malathion were more stable in an homogenized state than in a coarsely chopped state. At 4 °C, the residual dichlorvos in the coarsely chopped state and the homogenized state, respectively, was 12% and 69%; the residual malathion was 26% and 92%, respectively. Dichlorvos suffered a large loss of 89% and 59% for coarsely chopped and homogenized cowpea, even at -20 °C. It was obvious that the stability of dichlorvos and malathion were more affected by storage state than diazinon. The stability of diazinon was significantly affected by temperature. The effect of storage state and temperature on stability is likely to be correlated with enzymes in the matrix, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD).

CONCLUSION

The optimal stable storage conditions for three organophosphorus insecticides residues on cowpea were in the homogenized state and under a lower temperature. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Development of a Water Matrix Certified Reference Material for Volatile Organic Compounds Analysis in Water

Water matrix certified reference material (MCRM) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is used to provide quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) during the analysis of VOCs in water. In this research, a water MCRM of 28 VOCs was developed using a “reconstitution” approach by adding VOCs spiking, methanol solution into pure water immediately prior to analysis. The VOCs spiking solution was prepared gravimetrically by dividing 28 VOCs into seven groups, then based on ISO Guide 35, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to investigate the homogeneity and long-term stability. The studies of homogeneity and long-term stability indicated that the batch of VOCs spiking solution was homogeneous and stable at room temperature for at least 15 months. Moreover, the water MCRM of 28 VOCs was certified by a network of nine competent laboratories, and the certified values and expanded uncertainties of 28 VOCs ranged from 6.2 to 17 μg/L and 0.5 to 5.3 μg/L, respectively.

An interlaboratory study to evaluate potential matrix reference materials for herbicides in water

Matrix reference materials (MRM) are essential tools for the validation of analytical protocols. Nowadays, there are no such materials for the determination of herbicides in water. Pesticides stored in acetonitrile and stored on solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridges previously percolated with a water sample spiked with triazines and phenylureas have proven to be good candidates for reference materials because of their satisfactory stability under appropriate temperature conditions. To evaluate the behaviors of these materials containing pesticides and to be analyzed by liquid chromatography, a collaborative study including 15 laboratories has been organized. Observed reproducibility on candidate materials after the removal of extreme results was 16.1% for the vials with pesticides in acetonitrile (at around 0.125 mg/L) directly analyzed, 29.2% for a water sample spiked with the pesticides (at around 0.5 microg/L) analyzed after preconcentration on a cartridge and 26.7% for the cartridges previously percolated with a water containing the pesticides (250 mL at around 0.5 microg/L for each pesticide) analyzed after elution. Such dispersion values are quite compatible with the requirement of a further certification for such materials.
