Abstract
Depression is a common mental disorder that may lead to major mental health problems, and antidepressant drugs have been used as a treatment of choice to mitigate symptoms of major depressive disorders by ameliorating the chemical imbalances of neurotransmitters in brain. Since abusing antidepressant drugs such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressant drugs can cause severe adverse effects, continuous toxicological monitoring of the parent compounds as well as their metabolites using numerous analytical methods appears pertinent. Among them, capillary electrophoresis has been popularly utilized since the method has a lot of advantages viz. using small amounts of sample and solvents, ease of operation, and rapid analysis. This review paper brings a survey of more than 30 papers on capillary electrophoresis of antidepressant drugs published approximately from 1999 until 2018. It focuses on the reported capillary electrophoresis techniques and their applications and challenges for determining antidepressant drugs and their metabolites. It is organized according to the commonly used capillary zone electrophoresis method, followed by non-aqueous capillary electrophoresis and micellar electrokinetic chromatography, with details on breakthrough findings. Where available, information is given about the background electrolyte used, detector utilized, and sensitivity obtained.

Determination of brompheniramine enantiomers in rat plasma by cation-selective exhaustive injection and sweeping cyclodextrin modified electrokinetic chromatography method. Abstract
A method consisting of cation-selective exhaustive injection and sweeping (CSEI-sweeping) as online preconcentration followed by a cyclodextrin modified electrokinetic chromatography (CDEKC) enantioseparation has been developed for the simultaneous determination of two brompheniramine enantiomers in rat plasma. In this method, analytes were electrokinetically injected at a voltage of 8 kV for 80 s in a fused-silica capillary. Prior to the injection, the capillary was rinsed with 50 mM phosphate buffer of pH 3.5, followed by a plug of a higher conductivity buffer (150 mM phosphate pH 3.5, 20 psi, 6 min) and a plug of water (0.5 psi, 5 s). Separation was carried out applying -20 kV in 50 mM phosphate buffer, pH 3.5, containing 10% v/v ACN and 30 mg/mL sulfated-β-cyclodextrin (S-β-CD). Analytical signals were monitored at 210 nm. The detection sensitivity of brompheniramine enantiomers was enhanced by about 2400-fold compared to the normal injection mode (hydrodynamic injection for 3 s at 0.5 psi, with a BGE of 50 mM phosphate buffer containing 20 mg/mL S-β-CD at pH 3.5), and LLOQ of two enantiomers were both 0.0100 μg/mL. In addition, this method had fairly good repeatability and showed promising capabilities in the application of stereoselective pharmacokinetic investigations for brompheniramine enantiomers in rat.

Abstract
Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction was combined with acetonitrile stacking in capillary electrophoresis for the identification of three selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (citalopram, fluoxetine, and fluvoxamine) in human fluids such as urine and plasma. Parameters that affect the extraction and stacking efficiency, such as the type and volume of the extraction and disperser solvent, extraction time, salt addition for dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction, and sample matrices, pH, and concentration of the separation buffer for stacking, were investigated and optimized. Under optimum conditions, the enrichment factors were in the range of 1195-1441. Limits of detection ranged from 1.4 to 1.7 nM for the target analytes. Calibration graphs displayed satisfied linearity with R2 greater than or equal to 0.9978, and relative standard deviations of the peak area analysis were in the range of 2.9-5.0% (n = 3). The recoveries of all tricyclic antidepressant drugs from urine and plasma were in the range of 77-117 and 79-106%, respectively. The findings of this study show that dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction acetonitrile-stacking capillary electrophoresis is a rapid and convenient method for identifying tricyclic antidepressant drugs in urine and plasma.

Abstract
AbstractCapillary electrophoresis (CE) has become one of the most useful tools in separation science because of its high separation efficiency, low cost, versatility, ease of sample preparation and automation. However, some limitations of CE, such as poor concentration sensitivity due to its lower sample loading and shorter optical path length, limits its further applications in separation science. In order to solve this problem, various on-line sample preconcentration techniques such as transient isotachophoresis preconcentration, field-enhanced sample stacking, micelle to solvent stacking, micelle collapse, dynamic pH junction, sweeping, solid phase extraction, single drop microextraction and liquid phase microextraction have been combined with CE. Recent developments, applications and some variants together with different combinations of these techniques integrating in CE are reviewed here and our discussions will be confined to the past three years (2008–2011).

Abstract
Capillary electrophoresis has been alive for over two decades now; yet, its sensitivity is still regarded as being inferior to that of more traditional methods of separation such as HPLC. As such, it is unsurprising that overcoming this issue still generates much scientific interest. This review continues to update this series of reviews, first published in Electrophoresis in 2007, with an update published in 2009 and covers material published through to June 2010. It includes developments in the fields of stacking, covering all methods from field-amplified sample stacking and large volume sample stacking, through to ITP, dynamic pH junction and sweeping. Attention is also given to on-line or in-line extraction methods that have been used for electrophoresis.

Abstract
In this paper, a micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) method combined with cation-selective exhaustive injection (CSEI) and sweeping was developed to separate and concentrate four tobacco-specific N-nitrosamines (TSNAs) including N'-nitrosoanabasine (NAB), 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK), 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-4-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (iso-NNAL). Experimental parameters affecting separation efficiency and enhancement factors were investigated in detail. Under the optimum MEKC condition, NAB, NNK, NNAL and iso-NNAL were baseline separated with high separation efficiencies and good peak shapes. Furthermore, with the preconcentration by CSEI-sweeping-MEKC, the sensitivity enhancement factors for NAB, NNK, NNAL and iso-NNAL in terms of peak areas ranged from 6.0×10(3) to 1.5×10(4), and the detection limits (LOD, S/N=3) of four TSNAs were in the range of 0.004-0.016μg/mL. In addition, this method had fairly good repeatability, and the RSDs of retention time and peak area were less than 1% and 5%, respectively. Finally, this method showed promising capabilities in the application of detecting and analyzing TSNAs in human urine samples.

Abstract
Sweeping is a powerful on-line sample preconcentration technique that improves the concentration sensitivity of capillary electrophoresis (CE). This approach is designed to focus the analyte into narrow bands within the capillary, thereby increasing the sample volume that can be injected, without any loss of CE efficiency. It utilizes the interactions between an additive [i.e., a pseudostationary phase (PS) or complexing agent] in the separation buffer and the sample in a matrix that is devoid of the additive used. The accumulation occurs due to chromatographic partitioning, complexation or any interaction between analytes and the additive through electrophoresis. The extent of the preconcentration is dependent on the strength of interaction involved. Both charged and neutral analytes can be preconcentrated. Remarkable improvements--up to several thousandfold--in detection sensitivity have been achieved. This suggests that sweeping is a superior and general approach to on-line sample preconcentration in CE. The focusing mechanism of sweeping under different experimental conditions and its combination with other on-line preconcentration techniques are discussed in this review. The recently introduced techniques of transient trapping (tr-trapping) and analyte focusing by micelle collapse (AFMC) as well as other novel approaches to on-line sample preconcentration are also described.
