Development of negligible depletion hollow fiber membrane-protected liquid-phase microextraction for simultaneous determination of partitioning coefficients and acid dissociation constants

Large-volume constant-concentration sampling technique coupling with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for rapid on-site gas analysis

In this work, a portable large-volume constant-concentration (LVCC) sampling technique coupling with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was developed for the rapid on-site gas analysis based on suitable derivatization methods. LVCC sampling technique mainly consisted of a specially designed sampling cell including the rigid sample container and flexible sampling bag, and an absorption-derivatization module with a portable pump and a gas flowmeter. LVCC sampling technique allowed large, alterable and well-controlled sampling volume, which kept the concentration of gas target in headspace phase constant during the entire sampling process and made the sampling result more representative. Moreover, absorption and derivatization of gas target during LVCC sampling process were efficiently merged in one step using bromine-thiourea and OPA-NH₄⁺ strategy for ethylene and SO₂ respectively, which made LVCC sampling technique conveniently adapted to consequent SERS analysis. Finally, a new LVCC sampling-SERS method was developed and successfully applied for rapid analysis of trace ethylene and SO₂ from fruits. It was satisfied that trace ethylene and SO₂ from real fruit samples could be actually and accurately quantified by this method. The minor concentration fluctuations of ethylene and SO₂ during the entire LVCC sampling process were proved to be <4.3% and 2.1% respectively. Good recoveries for ethylene and sulfur dioxide from fruit samples were achieved in range of 95.0-101% and 97.0-104% respectively. It is expected that portable LVCC sampling technique would pave the way for rapid on-site analysis of accurate concentrations of trace gas targets from real samples by SERS.

Simultaneous determination of the lipophilicity and dissociation constants of dialkyl phosphinic acids by negligible depletion hollow fiber membrane-protected liquid-phase microextraction

Determination of the physicochemical properties, especially the lipophilicity (expressed as the logarithm of distribution coefficient, log D) and dissociation constant (pK_a), is of great importance in the early stage of environmental risk assessment for an ionizable compound without these data. Currently, the log D and pK_a values of dialkyl phosphinic acids (DPAs), the environmental hydrolysates of aluminum dialkyl phosphinates (ADPs) that is one class of emerging phosphorus-containing flame retardants, are not available. In this study, the log D and pK_a values of three DPAs including methylethylphosphinic acid (MEPA), diethylphosphinic acid (DEPA) and methylcyclohexyl phosphinic acid (MHPA), were simultaneously determined by negligible depletion hollow fiber supported liquid phase microextraction (nd-HF-LPME) followed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The pK_a and log D of DPAs were determined by curve-fitting the experimental data with equations derived on the basis of the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation and compared with model calculated data. For MEPA, DEPA and MHPA, the pK_a values were close and around 3, but the log Ds were strongly pH-dependent with values from -5.01 to 1.01. The log K_OW of the neutral form (logK_OW,HA) and ionic form (logK_OW,A) were in the range of -0.67-1.02 and -3.86--1.33, respectively. The experimentally determined pK_a values were highly in good agreement with ACD/pK_a predicted values and the measured log K_OW,HA values were closely related to KOWWIN calculated ones, suggesting ACD/pK_a and KOWWIN are good alternative methods to estimate pK_a and log K_OW of DPAs, respectively. As far as we know, this is the first report on the pK_a and log D data for DPAs, which are fundamental for the product design and evaluating the environmental behavior and effects of DPAs and ADPs.

Estimation of the toxicity of sulfadiazine to Daphnia magna using negligible depletion hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction independent of ambient pH

The toxicity of ionizable organic compounds to organisms depends on the pH, which therefore affects risk assessments of these compounds. However, there is not a direct chemical method to predict the toxicity of ionizable organic compounds. To determine whether hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME) is applicable for this purpose, a three-phase HF-LPME was used to measure sulfadiazine and estimate its toxicity to Daphnia magna in solutions of different pH. The result indicated that the sulfadiazine concentrations measured by HF-LPME decreased with increasing pH, which is consistent with the decreased toxicity. The concentration immobilize 50% of the daphnids (EC50) in 48 h calculated from nominal concentrations increased from 11.93 to 273.5 mg L⁻¹ as the pH increased from 6.0 to 8.5, and the coefficient of variation (CV) of the EC50 values reached 104.6%. When calculated from the concentrations measured by HF-LPME (pH 12 acceptor phase), the EC50 ranged from 223.4 to 394.6 mg L⁻¹, and the CV decreased to 27.60%, suggesting that the concentrations measured by HF-LPME can be used to estimate the toxicity of sulfadiazine irrespective of the solution pH.

pK(a) values of the monohydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyls (OH-PCBs), polybrominated biphenyls (OH-PBBs), polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (OH-PCDEs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs)

The SPARC software program aqueous pK(a) prediction module was validated against corresponding experimental acidity constants for chlorinated and brominated phenols and the limited experimental aqueous pK(a) data sets for monohydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyls (OH-PCBs), polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (OH-PCDEs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs). pK(a) values were then estimated for all 837 monohydroxylated mono- through nona-halogenated congeners in each of the OH-PCB, OH-PCDE, and OH-PBDE classes, as well as for the monohydroxylated polybrominated biphenyls (OH-PBBs), giving a total of 3348 compounds. Large intrahomolog pK(a) variation by up to six units is expected within each contaminant class, with pK(a) values ranging from about 4 to 11 dependent on the degree and pattern of halogenation. Increasing halogenation generally decreased the average pK(a) within each homolog group. Significant intrahomolog differences in pK(a) values exist between OH-PCB, OH-PBB, OH-PCDE, and OH-PBDE congeners, including large acidity constant variation between isomers with equivalent halogenation patterns but varying location of the hydroxy moiety. Congener specific pH dependent investigations into the partitioning and degradation behaviors of these compounds are necessary, including greater consideration of analyte ionization effects during their extraction and analysis.
