Abstract
Biomarkers are significant indicators to assist the early diagnosis of diseases and assess the therapeutic response. However, due to the low-abundance of biomarkers in complex biological fluids, it is highly desirable to explore efficient techniques to attain their selective recognition and capture before the detection. Molecularly imprinted monoliths integrate the high selectivity of imprinted polymers and the rapid convective mass transport of monoliths, and as a result are promising candidates to achieve the specific enrichment of biomarkers from complex samples. This review summarizes the various imprinting approaches for the preparation of molecularly imprinted monoliths. The state-of-art advances as an effective platform for applications in the selective capture of biomacromolecules related biomarkers were also outlined. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract
In this study, five adsorption isotherm models, that is, the Langmuir, Freundlich, Langmuir-Freundlich, Temkin and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller isotherms, were utilized for the analysis of the experimental adsorption data for six classes of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based thermo-responsive copolymer-grafted Sepharose Fast Flow sorbents of different copolymer compositions with two structurally related proteins, namely bovine holo-lactoferrin and bovine holo-transferrin at 20 and 50°C. The experimental data for bovine holo-lactoferrin could be mathematically fitted to the Freundlich and Temkin isotherms when the protein feed concentrations were in the range of 1-40 mg/mL at both 20 and 50°C. Similar analysis of the binding of the homologous protein, bovine holo-transferrin, to the same thermo-responsive copolymer-grafted sorbents revealed that the experimental data could be fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms with coefficients of determination value over 0.90.

Novel controllable hydrophilic thermo-responsive molecularly imprinted resin adsorbent prepared in water for selective recognition of alkaloids by thermal-assisted dispersive solid phase extraction. J Pharm Biomed Anal 2018; 160:386-396. Abstract
A novel controllable hydrophilic thermo-responsive molecularly imprinted resin (T-MIR) with a switchable zipper-like architecture was synthesized in the aqueous phase and applied to the selective recognition and extraction of alkaloids by positive temperature regulation. In this synthesis process of T-MIR, 2-acrylamide-2- methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) and acrylamide (AAm) were coupled as zipper-like thermo-responsive monomers, resorcinol, and melamine as hydrophilic monomers, formaldehyde as a cross-linker, and berberine chloride (BerbC) as the template. The resulting T-MIR achieved the controlled rebinding and release of BerbC from temperature stimuli (25-45 °C) and the adsorption process followed the Langmuir isotherm (R2>0.99856) and pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2>0.98138). The highest theory adsorption ability (33.44 mg/g) and recognition ability (imprinting factor: 4.71) of T-MIR was activated between poly(AMPS) and poly(AAm) in the zipper-like architecture at 35 °C. T-MIR was then applied to the selective recognition alkaloids by dispersive solid phase extraction. The limit of detection and limit of quantitation of the method were less than 0.025 mg/L and 0.082 mg/mL, respectively. The recoveries of the proposed method at three spiked levels were 96.8-100.8%, with a relative standard deviation of less than 4.8%. In contrast to previous thermo-responsive materials, this switchable zipper-like hydrophilic T-MIR with good adsorption, specificity recognition, and excellent temperature controllable properties provides a unique alternative to the selective recognition and controlled rebind-release alkaloids by the temperature signal.

Abstract
A hydrophobic ionic liquid modified thermoresponsive molecularly imprinted monolith was synthesized using N-isopropylacrylamide as a thermoresponsive monomer and a long-chain hydrophobic ionic liquid as an auxiliary modification monomer. The ionic-liquid-modified thermoresponsive molecularly imprinted polymer was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. When the column temperature was 50°C, the synthesized monolithic column was successfully applied to the selective separation of homologue tanshinones within 7 min and eluted only by water (mobile phase) (theoretical plates more than 1.00 × 105 per meter). The negative Gibbs free energy (≤-2.37) values showed that the transfer of the tanshinones from the mobile phase to the stationary phase on this monolithic column was a thermodynamically spontaneous process. Good linearity of the five tanshinones by thermoresponsive monolith was obtained in the range of 0.100-25.0 μg/mL. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) and limit of quantitation (S/N = 10) were less than 0.0390 and 0.0630 μg/mL, respectively, with a relative standard deviation of <4.8%. In this proposed thermoresponsive chromatography method, the separation of homologue analytes can be achieved by changing the column temperature, and the use of water as the mobile phase would decrease the economic cost and organic pollution.

Abstract
The quest for higher column efficiency is one of the major research areas in polymer-based monolithic column fabrication. In this research, two novel polymer-based HILIC monolithic columns with 400μm I.D.×800μm O.D. were prepared based on the thermally initiated co-polymerization of N,N-dimethyl-N-(3-methacrylamidopropyl)-N-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium betaine (SPP) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) or N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA). In order to obtain a satisfactory performance in terms of column permeability, mechanical stability, efficiency and selectivity, the polymerization parameters were systematically optimized. Column efficiencies as high as 142, 000 plates/m and 120, 000 plates/m were observed for the analysis of neutral compounds at 0.6mm/s on the poly(SPP-co-MBA) and poly(SPP-co-EDMA) monoliths, respectively. Furthermore, the Van Deemter plots for thiourea on the two monoliths were compared with that on a commercial silica based ZIC-HILIC column (3.5μm, 200Å, 150mm×300μm I.D.) using ACN/H2O (90/10, v/v) as the mobile phase at room temperature. It was noticeable that the Van Deemter curves for both monoliths, particularly the poly(SPP-co-MBA) monolith, are significantly flatter than that obtained for the ZIC-HILIC column, which indicates that in spite of their larger internal diameters, they yield better overall efficiency, with less peak dispersion, across a much wider range of usable linear velocities. A clearly better separation performance was also observed for nucleobases, nucleosides, nucleotides and small peptides on the poly(SPP-co-MBA) monolith compared to the ZIC-HILIC column. It is particularly worth mentioning that these 400μm I.D. polymer-based HILIC monolithic columns exhibit enhanced mechanical strength owing to the thicker capillary wall of the fused-silica capillaries.

Abstract
Natural bone consists of apatite and collagen fiber. Bioactive materials capable to bonding to bone tissue are clinically used as bone-repairing materials. Apatite-organic polymer composites exhibit bone-bonding abilities and mechanical properties similar to those of natural bone, and these materials can be prepared using biomimetic processes in simulated body fluid (SBF). Specific functional groups such as sulfonic and carboxylic acid groups are known to induce the heterogeneous nucleation of apatite in SBF. However, it remains unclear whether structurally related sulfinic acid groups can contribute to apatite formation in the same way, despite sodium sulfonate being used in biomedical applications as a radical polymerization promoter in adhesive dental resin. Herein, we report the preparation of a new hydrogel containing sulfinic acid groups from sodium 4-vinylbenzenesulfinate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate using a radical polymerization reaction and the subsequent incorporation of Ca2+ ions into this material. We also investigated the apatite-forming behavior of these hydrogels in SBF. Hydrogels containing sulfinic acid groups showed higher apatite-forming ability than those without sulfinic acid groups. In addition, the apatite layer formed on the former showed tight adhesion to the hydrogel. This phenomenon was attributed to the heterogeneous nucleation of apatite, induced by the sulfinic acid groups. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract
Macroporous polymer monoliths based on poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) with varied styrene/divinylbenzene ratios have been prepared by organotellurium-mediated living radical polymerization. The well-defined cocontinuous macroporous structure can be obtained by polymerization-induced spinodal decomposition, and the pore structures are controlled by adjusting the starting composition. The separation efficiency of small molecules (alkylbenzenes) in the obtained monoliths has been evaluated in the capillary format by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) under the isocratic reversed-phase mode. Baseline separations of these molecules with a low pressure drop (∼2 MPa) have been achieved because of the well-defined macropores and to the less-heterogeneous cross-linked networks.
