Abstract
A new solid-phase extraction (SPE) method for the extraction, enrichment, and analysis of eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in water was developed. The current approach involves using a cross-linked starch-based polymer as an extraction adsorbent and determining the PBDE analytes of interest using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in negative chemical ionization mode (GC-NCI-MS). The starch-based polymer was synthesized by the reaction of soluble starch with 4,4'-methylene-bis-phenyldiisocyanate as a cross-linking agent in dry dimethylformamide. Various parameters impacting extraction efficiencies, such as adsorbent quantity, sample volumes, elution solvents and volumes, and methanol content, were carefully optimized. The 500 mg of starch-based polymer as an adsorbent used to extract 1000 mL of spiked water, presented high extraction recoveries of eight PBDEs. The linearity of the extraction process was investigated in the range of 1-200 ng L-1 for BDE-28, 47, 99, 100, and 5-200 ng L-1 for BDE-153, 154, 183, and 209, with coefficients of determination (r2) exceeding 0.990 for all PBDEs. The limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.06 to 1.42 ng L-1 (S/N = 3) and the relative standard deviation values (RSD) were between 3.6 and 9.5 percent (n = 5) under optimum conditions. The method was successfully used to analyze river and lake water samples, where it exhibited acceptable recovery values of 71.3 to 104.2%. Considering the excellent analytical performance and comparative cost advantage, we recommend the developed starch-based SPE method for routine extraction and analysis of PBDEs in water media.

Abstract
AbstractEpoxy resins are important industrial polymers due to their versatile properties and ease of preparation. They are used on a large scale in coating and adhesives applications. Epoxy resins are prepared by photo-curing technique or thermal curing method in presence of different hardeners. The first method is used for small areas while the latter is utilized mainly for coating applications. Graphene and its oxide have proved themselves as good fillers for epoxy resin since the formed composites demonstrated enhanced mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. This article gives insight view for synthesis techniques and properties of these composites with a deep discussion for electrical and dielectric investigations of epoxy resins loaded with threshold concentration of graphene oxide. A case study of dielectric properties of epoxy resin/modified graphene oxide composite, is presented in which effect of curing technique on dielectric behavior is explored. Although the amount of filler was kept at the threshold concentration (1% by weight) obvious change in the dielectric properties could be observed unlike the rest of properties.

Abstract
This paper describes an analytical approach based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by analysis using liquid and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detectors for a determination of 18 organic UV filters from water samples. Extraction method parameters were optimized: 250 ml of water sample loaded on Chromabond C18 cartridges after adjustment to pH 4 and then eluted with acetonitrile. The mobile phase and the parameters of the mass spectrometer, as well as those of the ionization source, were tested to enhance detection sensitivity. During method validation, the extracted target compounds showed good recoveries (> 68%) with acceptable values in terms of repeatability (RSDr) and reproducibility (RSDR), where relative standard deviations values were lower than 20%. The validated method was applied to 10 water samples collected from different swimming pools located in Lebanon from which eight UV filters among the eighteen targets compounds were detected at concentrations ranged between 1 and 2526 µg L-1. The most detected compounds were padimate-O (OD-PABA) and octocrylene (OCR). This study represents the first available data on the occurrence of UV filter residues in Lebanese swimming pool opening hence future perspectives and insights to evaluate their degradation by-products and their toxicity on human health and marine ecosystem.

Abstract
The monomer of two-in-one molecular design strategy (i.e., A2B2 type monomer) 1,6-bis(4-formylphenyl)-3,8-bis((4-aminophenyl) ethynyl)) pyrene (BFBAEPy) was self-polymerized and coated on the modified Fe3O4 surface to synthesize a magnetic covalent organic framework (Fe3O4@COF) nanocomposite with a core-shell structure. Before high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) determination, Fe3O4@COF was used as a magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent to enrich Rhodamine B (RhB) illegally added to Chili powder and Chinese prickly ash. It had a large specific surface area and suitable pore size, which promoted the efficient adsorption of RhB dye and eliminated the interference of the matrix. Several key parameters affecting the extraction recovery rate were investigated, including adsorption capacity, adsorption time, pH, ionic strength, elution solvent, elution volume and elution time. Under the best optimized conditions, within the linear detection range of 0.05-5 µg/mL for RhB with the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.0038 µg/mL, excellent linearity (correlation coefficient R2=0.9997), and good repeatability (relative standard deviations RSD%< 3.8%), satisfactory extraction recovery rate (91.7%-97.5%). Therefore, the application of the established method to the detection of RhB in food samples has bright prospects.

Abstract
A novel extraction method named hydrogen fluoride assisted-glass surface etching based liquid phase microextraction (HF-GSE-LPME) was proposed to determine 4-n-nonylphenol at trace levels by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). After the evaluation of system analytical performance for the HF-GSE-LPME-GC-MS system, limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) values were calculated as 7.1 and 23.8 ng/g, respectively. Enhancement in detection power of the method was determined to be 22 fold when LOD values of the GC-MS and HF-GSE-LPME-GC-MS systems were compared with each other. Applicability and accuracy of the established method were checked by performing spiking experiments. A matrix matching calibration strategy was applied to boost the accuracy of quantification in both matrices, and the percent recovery results obtained for bottled drinking water and dam lake water samples were in the range of 98 - 107 and 90 - 117%, respectively.

Abstract
A novel double-microextraction approach, combining dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) and vortex-assisted micro-solid-phase extraction (VA-µ-SPE) was developed. The procedure was applied to extract endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) consisting of three phthalate esters (PEs) and bisphenol A (BPA) associated with PM2.5 (airborne particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 µm). Gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was used for determination of the analytes. These analytes were first ultrasonically desorbed from PM2.5 in a 10% acetone aqueous solution. DLLME was used to first preconcentrate the analytes; the sample solution, still in the same vial, was then subjected to VA-µ-SPE. The synergistic effects provided by the combination of the microextraction techniques provided advantages such as high enrichment factors and good cleanup performance. Various extraction parameters such as type and volume of extractant solvent (for DLLME), and type of sorbent, extraction time, desorption solvent, volume of desorption solvent and desorption time (for µ-SPE) were evaluated. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were found to be the most suitable sorbent. This procedure achieved good precision with intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations of between 1.93 and 9.95%. Good linearity ranges (0.3-100 ng/mL and 0.5-100 ng/mL, depending on analytes), and limits of detection (LODs) of between 0.07 and 0.15 ng/mL were obtained. The method was used to determine the levels of PEs and BPA in ambient air, with concentrations ranging between below the limits of quantification and 0.48 ng/m3. DLLME-VA-µ-SPE-GC-MS/MS was demonstrated to be suitable for the determination of these EDCs present in PM2.5.

Abstract
Novel montmorillonite composites including ionic liquid were prepared and utilized as coating materials for solid phase microextraction fibers. Ionic liquids containing amino terminated imidazolium cations with methyl and benzyl groups and hydrophobic anions (bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) and hydrophilic anions (bromide and tetrafluoroborate) were intercalated to KSF-montmorillonite using stainless steel wire as support by using the layer-by-layer technique. After optimization of experimental conditions, solid phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS) after derivatization by silylation and high performance liquid chromatography/diode array detector (SPME-HPLC/DAD) were developed for the determination of 16 phenolic compounds. The developed SPME-GC/MS method had wider linearity and lower limit of detection than the developed SPME-HPLC/DAD method with similar repeatability (for 5 runs, less than 4.2 %) for a single fiber. The percentage of the variance between two different fibers was less than 6.0 % in both methods. The developed SPME methods were applied successfully to fresh fruit juices and the relative recoveries and the repeatabilities from spiked fruit juice samples were satisfactorily achieved. The results obtained with both chromatographic methods were in good agreement with each other.

Abstract
Since its discovery in 2004 by Novoselov et al., graphene has attracted increasing attention in the scientific community due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, such as thermal/mechanical resistance, electronic stability, high Young's modulus, and fast mobility of charged atoms. In addition, other remarkable characteristics support its use in analytical chemistry, especially as sorbent. For these reasons, graphene-based materials (GBMs) have been used as a promising material in sample preparation. Graphene and graphene oxide, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties as a large surface area, good mechanical strength, thermal stability, and delocalized π-electrons, are ideal sorbents, especially for molecules containing aromatic rings. They have been used in several sample preparation techniques such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as well as in miniaturized modes as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in their different configurations. However, the reduced size and weight of graphene sheets can limit their use since they commonly aggregate to each other, causing clogging in high-pressure extractive devices. One way to overcome it and other drawbacks consists of covalently attaching the graphene sheets to support materials (e.g., silica, polymers, and magnetically modified supports). Also, graphene-based materials can be further chemically modified to favor some interactions with specific analytes, resulting in more efficient hybrid sorbents with higher selectivity for specific chemical classes. As a result of this wide variety of graphene-based sorbents, several studies have shown the current potential of applying GBMs in different fields such as food, biological, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications. Within such a context, this review will focus on the last five years of achievements in graphene-based materials for sample preparation techniques highlighting their synthesis, chemical structure, and potential application for the extraction of target analytes in different complex matrices.

Abstract
Monitoring the trace amount of chemicals in various samples remains a challenge. This study was conducted to develop a new solid-phase microextraction (SPME) system (inside-tube SPME) for trace analysis of n-hexane in air and urine matrix. The inside-tube SPME system was prepared based on the phase separation technique. A mixture of carbon aerogel and polystyrene was loaded inside the needle using methanol as the anti-solvent. The air matrix of n-hexane was prepared in a Tedlar bag, and n-hexane vapor was sampled at a flow rate of 0.1 L/min. Urine samples spiked with n-hexane were used to simulate the sampling method. The limit of detection using the inside-tube SPME was 0.0003 μg/sample with 2.5 mg of adsorbent, whereas that using the packed needle was 0.004 μg/sample with 5 mg of carbon aerogel. For n-hexane analysis, the day-to-day and within-day coefficient variation were lower than 1.37%, with recoveries over 98.41% achieved. The inside-tube SPME is an inter-link device between two sample preparation methods, namely, a needle trap device and an SPME system. The result of this study suggested the use of the inside-tube SPME containing carbon aerogel (adsorbent) as a simple and fast method with low cost for n-hexane evaluation.

Abstract
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) derived from e-waste dismantling, tend to easily bioaccumulate in vegetables. In this study, an optimized sample pretreatment method based on graphene oxide (GO) dispersed acid silica gel was used to determine PBDEs levels in vegetables. The recovery efficiency of the optimized method ranged between 90.3%-107.5% with the detection limit (LOD) being within 0.17-1.8 ng g-1. Vegetable samples were grown nearby an e-waste recycling plant in Nanjing, China, and analyzed using the optimized method. The concentrations of ΣPBDEs in the samples ranged from 12.1 to 20.1 ng g-1. This study developed an optimized sample pretreatment method to determine PBDEs in vegetables nearby e-waste contaminated sites and provides insights on the potential risks derived from e-waste dismantling to the surrounding environment.

Abstract
This work describes the integration of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) by codeposition of a hybrid consisting of reduced graphene oxide and silver on silver-copper alloy fibers. The morphology and structure of the coating were characterized by a variety of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques that confirmed the hybrid structure of the material. A galvanic-displacement-induced process is assumed to be involved during the codeposition of the hybrid coating on the alloy. In this process, Ag(I) is reduced to Ag(0) by Cu(0), and the presence of conjugated domains in GO facilitates the long-range transfer of electrons from Cu to Ag+. Simultaneously, GO accepts electrons and is converted into RGO. The hybrid coating exhibits a high SERS enhancement factor and good spatial uniformity. The needle-like coated alloy fibers are shown to be a viable tool for non-destructive sampling and SERS-based determination of trace levels of the antibiotics sulfadiazine and sulfamethoxazole in a spiked tissue mimic. The SERS peaks at 1149 cm-1 for sulfadiazine and 1144 cm-1 for sulfamethoxazole are selected as the reference peaks in the quantitative analysis. The linear range is from 0.01 to 100 μg·cm-3. The detection limits are 1.9 ng·cm-3 for sulfadiazine and 4.4 ng·cm-3 for sulfamethoxazole. Inhibition of water adsorption into polar solid-phase microextraction materials with ultrathin polydimethylsiloxane coating for thermal desorption-gas chromatography analysis. J Chromatogr A 2018; 1578:1-7. [PMID: 30337167 DOI: 10.1016/j.chroma.2018.10.013] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/19/2018] [Revised: 10/05/2018] [Accepted: 10/09/2018] [Indexed: 11/23/2022]
Abstract
Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with thermal desorption-gas chromatography (TD-GC) has become a powerful analysis tool for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in water samples. However, water adsorption into polar microextraction phase is usually unavoidable during the extraction process, and the burst of large amounts of water vapour during thermal desorption will cause serious problems to GC separation and detectors. Pawliszyn's group had demonstrated that the tens of micron-thick, defect-free polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating could act as a perfect barrier for water adsorption and offer much better compatibility in complex matrices. However, the PDMS overcoat largely decreased the uptake rate of polar analytes into the inner sorbent. In order to quantify the effect of PDMS coating thickness on water adsorption amount and the extraction kinetics, ultrathin PDMS layer was used to coat the polar extraction phase with polyimide (PI) as a model in this work. It was surprising to find that the PDMS coating with the thickness less than one micron can decrease the water adsorption by 96%, while the extraction efficiency for polar analytes (phenolic compounds and nitroaromatic explosives) was decreased by less than 20% at the extraction time of 30 min. Moreover, the kinetic data showed that the thinner the PDMS coating was, the less the uptake rate of polar analytes into PI extraction phase decreased. Finally, polar poly (phthalazine ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) extraction phase was also coated with ultrathin PDMS coating to verify the universality of the strategy. Generally, the water adsorption problem in polar SPME was overcome to a great extent, and the extraction efficiency of polar analytes was mainly preserved with this ultrathin PDMS coating, which could broaden the application of SPME in the environmental field.

Abstract
A poly(o-anisidine)/graphene oxide nanosheets (PoA/GONSs) coating is fabricated by a simple and efficient electrochemical deposition method on steel wire. The incorporation of PoA and GONSs allows preparing a nanocomposite that can successfully integrate the advantages of both. Then, the prepared fiber is applied to the headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatographic analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes. In order to obtain an adherent, stable and efficient fiber to extract target analytes, experimental parameters related to the coating process such as deposition potential, deposition time, concentration of the monomer and concentration of GONSs were studied. The prepared composite fiber were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The effect of various parameters on the efficiency of HS-SPME process consisting of desorption temperature and time, extraction temperature and time and ionic strength were also optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the method was linear for orders of magnitude with correlation coefficients varying from 0.9888 to 0.9993. Intra- and inter-day precisions of the method were determined from mixed aqueous solutions containing 5.0 ng mL(-1) of each BTEX. The intra-day precisions varied from 3.1% for toluene to 5.7% for ethylbenzene, while the inter-day precisions varied from 4.9% for o-xylene to 7.3% for m,p-xylene. Limits of detection were in the range 0.01-0.06 ng mL(-1). The proposed method was applied to monitor BTEX compounds in some water samples and the accuracies found through spiking river water samples showed high recoveries between 92.0 and 101.2%.

Abstract
Stir bar sorptive extraction is an environmentally friendly microextraction technique based on a stir bar with various sorbents. A commercial stirrer is a good support, but it has not been used in stir bar sorptive extraction due to difficult modification. A stirrer was modified with carbon nanoparticles by a simple carbon deposition process in flame and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. A three-dimensional porous coating was formed with carbon nanoparticles. In combination with high-performance liquid chromatography, the stir bar was evaluated using five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as model analytes. Conditions including extraction time and temperature, ionic strength, and desorption solvent were investigated by a factor-by-factor optimization method. The established method exhibited good linearity (0.01-10 μg/L) and low limits of quantification (0.01 μg/L). It was applied to detect model analytes in environmental water samples. No analyte was detected in river water, and five analytes were quantified in rain water. The recoveries of five analytes in two samples with spiked at 2 μg/L were in the range of 92.2-106% and 93.4-108%, respectively. The results indicated that the carbon nanoparticle-coated stirrer was an efficient stir bar for extraction analysis of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
