Determinations of airborne synthetic musks by polyurethane foam coupled with triple quadrupole gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometer

Tree Physiological Variables as a Proxy of Heavy Metal and Platinum Group Elements Pollution in Urban Areas

Physiological variables (the content of chlorophyll, flavonoids and nitrogen, together with Fv/Fm) and the content of ten heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, V and Zn) and two platinum group elements (PGEs: Pd and Rh) were measured in the leaves of 50 individuals of Ligustrum lucidum trees regularly distributed in the city of Logroño (Northern Spain). Three of these variables increased with increasing physiological vitality (chlorophyll, nitrogen and Fv/Fm), whereas flavonoids increased in response to different abiotic stresses, including pollution. Our aim was to test their adequacy as proxies for the pollution due to heavy metals and PGEs. The three vitality indicators generally showed high values typical of healthy plants, and they did not seem to be consistently affected by the different pollutants. In fact, the three vitality variables were positively correlated with the first factor of a PCA that was dominated by heavy metals (mainly Pb, but also Sb, V and Ni). In addition, Fv/Fm was negatively correlated with the second factor of the PCA, which was dominated by PGEs, but the trees showing Fv/Fm values below the damage threshold did not coincide with those showing high PGE content. Regarding flavonoid content, it was negatively correlated with PCA factors dominated by heavy metals, which did not confirm its role as a protectant against metal stress. The relatively low levels of pollution usually found in the city of Logroño, together with the influence of other environmental factors and the relative tolerance of Ligustrum lucidum to modest atmospheric pollution, probably determined the only slight response of the physiological variables to heavy metals and PGEs.

Development of aquatic life criteria for tonalide (AHTN) and the ecological risk assessment

AHTN (tonalide) is a polycyclic musk that is widely used as fragrance additive in numerous consumer products. AHTN is of great worldwide concern owing to its adverse effects on aquatic organisms and frequent detection in both domestic and foreign aquatic environments. Therefore, derivation of the aquatic life criteria for AHTN exposure is urgently needed. In this work, AHTN toxicity data for eight Chinese native freshwater organisms were used to derive a criterion maximum concentration of 59.39 μg/L and a criterion continuous concentration of 22.43 μg/L using United States Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. Toxicity tests showed that the annelid L. hoffmeisteri and the amphibian R. nigromaculata were the least and most sensitive species to AHTN, respectively. The sensitivity of the planktonic crustacean D. magna to AHTN obviously differed from that of the benthic crustacean M. nipponense. The AHTN and HHCB correlation analysis exhibited a strong positive linear correlation (R² = 0.8622) in water. The ecological risk assessment showed that AHTN and HHCB posed a higher risk in foreign surface waters than Chinese waters, but a lower risk in foreign wastewater treatment plant effluent than in China. The ecological risks of AHTN and HHCB in most surveyed water bodies of various countries were at acceptable levels, with a few exceptions.

Assessment of dermal exposures for synthetic musks from personal care products in Taiwan

Over the past decades, synthetic musks have been widely used as fragrances for enhancing scent and covering odor in many personal care products (PCPs). The presence of synthetic musk is of potential concern since health effects, such as photo-allergic reactions and neurotoxicity due to the exposures have been observed. To assess the associate health risks from possible exposures of synthetic musks in Taiwan, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometers (GC/MS/MS) in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode was used to determine 10 synthetic musks in total 109 PCPs samples. The results showed that the higher levels of synthetic musks were found in perfume, body lotion and hair care products. Galaxolide (HHCB) and Tonalide (AHTN) were found in every category of the PCPs samples. The median concentrations in 109 samples measured were 958.19 μg g^-1 and 674.03 μg g^-1 for HHCB and AHTN, respectively. Cashmeran (DPMI) was also found in all the samples collected with a median concentration of 144.62 μg g^-1, except for categories of facial essences. Musk ketone (MK) was found in several PCPs categories, including perfume, body lotion, hair care product, and shower bath products, with a median concentration of 693.27 μg g^-1. In addition, dermal exposures of synthetic musks were also estimated for people in Taiwan. The daily exposure of total synthetic musks through applications of PCPs was estimated to be 22.54 μg kg^-1 body weight day^-1. The results indicate that the skin contact of perfume and body lotion were the major sources for human exposures to synthetic musks in Taiwan.

Simultaneous Detection of Eight Prohibited Flavor Compounds in Foodstuffs Using Gas Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry

A multiflavor detection method, using gas chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), has been developed for the simultaneous identification and quantification of eight prohibited flavor compounds in daily foods. Under the optimized extraction conditions, samples were purified directly through membrane filtration. Variables affecting the GC-MS/MS were optimized to obtain better separation. The excellent selectivity and sensitivity achieved in multiple reactions monitoring mode allowed satisfactory confirmation and quantitation. In this study, the linear ranges of the target compounds were 0.05 to 500 ng/L with good correlation coefficients ( R² > 0.999). The limits of detection of target compounds ranged from 0.005 to 0.2 μg/kg. The average recoveries were in the range of 80.2 to 110.6% (beef jerky), 82.3 to 94.1% (cod liver oil), and 83.6 to 104.1% (candy).

Biomonitoring levels and trends of PAHs and synthetic musks associated with land use in urban environments

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are some of the most studied organic compounds in urban environments, due to their known adverse effects on human health and persistence in environmental matrices. During the last decade, new groups of organic compounds with an intensive use worldwide such as synthetic musks have been raising the interest of the scientific community given their toxicity and health effects. However, literature is still scarce in studies dealing with their concentration in the environment, especially in developing countries, where they are even more rare or non-existing at all. We employed leaves of Ligustrum lucidum to assess the concentrations of PAHs and synthetic musks in different land use areas in Cordoba city, therefore contributing with environmental information in Argentina. We found higher levels of PAHs in urban and industrial areas than in the peri-urban sampling sites, naphthalene being one of the dominant PAHs in all sampling areas. Regarding synthetic musk fragrances, polycyclic musks were the most contributing compounds and the highest levels found in industrial areas as well. A high environmental risk could be expected due to the frequent occurrence of galaxolide in addition to the high hazardous potential of phantolide, which was present in 50% of the samples. The results of the present study indicate that leaves of an urban ubiquitous tree can be used to assess the spatial behavior of both "classic" and "emerging" organic pollutants, allowing an assessment of urban air quality in areas where common air sampling devices are unavailable.

Multi-residue analysis of legacy POPs and emerging organic contaminants in Singapore's coastal waters using gas chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry

A gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) based method was developed for determination of 86 hydrophobic organic compounds in seawater. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) was employed for sequestration of target analytes in the dissolved phase. Ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) and florisil chromatography were utilized for determination of concentrations in suspended sediments (particulate phase). The target compounds included multi-class hydrophobic contaminants with a wide range of physical-chemical properties. This list includes several polycyclic and nitro-aromatic musks, brominated and chlorinated flame retardants, methyl triclosan, chlorobenzenes, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Spiked MilliQ water and seawater samples were used to evaluate the method performance. Analyte recoveries were generally good, with the exception of some of the more volatile target analytes (chlorobenzenes and bromobenzenes). The method is very sensitive, with method detection limits typically in the low parts per quadrillion (ppq) range. Analysis of 51 field-collected seawater samples (dissolved and particulate-bound phases) from four distinct coastal sites around Singapore showed trace detection of several polychlorinated biphenyl congeners and other legacy POPs, as well as several current-use emerging organic contaminants (EOCs). Polycyclic and nitro-aromatic musks, bromobenzenes, dechlorane plus isomers (syn-DP, anti-DP) and methyl triclosan were frequently detected at appreciable levels (2-20,000pgL(-1)). The observed concentrations of the monitored contaminants in Singapore's marine environment were generally comparable to previously reported levels in other coastal marine systems. To our knowledge, these are the first measurements of these emerging contaminants of concern in Singapore or Southeast Asia. The developed method may prove beneficial for future environmental monitoring of hydrophobic organic contaminants in marine environments. Further, the study provides novel information regarding several potentially hazardous contaminants of concern in Singapore's marine environment, which will aid future risk assessment initiatives.
