Abstract
A magnetic, mesoporous core/shell structured Fe3O4@SiO2@mSiO2 nanocomposite was synthesized and employed as a magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) sorbent for the determination of trace sulfonamides (SAs) in food samples. The synthesized nanocomposite was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, N2 sorption analysis and vibrating sample magnetometry. The results showed that Fe3O4@SiO2@mSiO2 possessed a mesoporous structure with a large surface area. Batch experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption ability for SAs. Fe3O4@SiO2@mSiO2 showed fast kinetics and high adsorption capacity, and the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm are well fitted with the experimental data, indicating that chemical adsorption might be the rate-limiting step. Moreover, the high adsorption capacity can be maintained for at least 8 runs, indicating excellent stability and reusability. The proposed method exhibited good linearity in the range of 0.2-500 μg L-1, the R2 values of all the analytes were greater than 0.99 and the LODs were all lower than 0.2 μg L-1. Furthermore, real food samples were successfully analyzed with Fe3O4@SiO2@mSiO2 and high recoveries varying from 89.7% and 110.6% were obtained with low relative standard deviations ranging from 1.78% to 6.91%. The Fe3O4@SiO2@mSiO2 magnetic nanocomposite is a promising sorbent for the efficient extraction of SAs from complex food samples.

Abstract
In the current scenario, where environmental degradation, global climate change, and the depletion of petroleum feedstock pose significant challenges, the chemical industry seeks sustainable alternatives for manufacturing chemicals, fuels, and bioplastics. Biorefining processes that integrate biomass conversion and microbial fermentation have emerged as preferred approaches to create value-added compounds. However, commercializing biorefinery products is hindered by dilute concentrations of final products and the demand for high purity goods. To address these challenges, effective separation and recovery procedures are essential to minimize costs and equipment size. This article proposes a biorefinery route for the production of protocatechuic acid (PCA) by focusing on in situ PCA separation and purification from fermentation broth. PCA is a significant phenolic molecule with numerous applications in the pharmaceutical sector for its anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic, and antioxidant properties, as well as in the food, polymer, and other chemical industries. The chemical approach is predominantly used to produce PCA due to the cost-prohibitive nature of natural extraction techniques. Reactive extraction, a promising technique known for its enhanced extraction efficiency, is identified as a viable strategy for recovering carboxylic acids compared to conventional methods. The extraction of PCA has been explored using various solvents, including natural and conventional solvents, such as aminic and organophosphorous extractants, as well as the potential utilization of ionic liquids as green solvents. Additionally, back extraction techniques like temperature swing and diluent composition swing can be employed for reactive extraction product recovery, facilitating the regeneration of the extractant from the organic phase. By addressing the challenges associated with PCA production and usage, particularly through reactive extraction, this proposed biorefinery route aims to contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly chemical industry. The incorporation of PCA in the biorefinery process allows for the utilization of this valuable compound with diverse industrial applications, thus providing an additional incentive for the development and optimization of efficient separation techniques.

A Core-Shell Amino-Functionalized Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Based on Glycidyl Methacrylate for Dispersive Solid-Phase Microextraction of Aniline. SUSTAINABILITY 2022. Abstract
A core-shell amino-functionalized glycidyl methacrylate magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized by the suspension polymerization/surface imprinting method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury porosimetry, nitrogen gas adsorption–desorption, and elemental analysis. This MIP was used as the sorbent in dispersive solid-phase microextraction (DSPME) of aniline from textile wastewater prior to high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) measurements. Since aniline is toxic and a probable human carcinogen, its determination in water is of great significance. This is a challenging task because aniline is usually present at trace levels. The effects of different DSPME variables on the preconcentration efficiency have been studied by using the Plackett–Burman screening design of experiments (DoE) followed by response surface methodology optimization using the Box-Behnken design. Thus, DoE enabled the investigation of several variables simultaneously. Under optimized conditions, aniline was effectively and selectively separated by a small amount of the DSPME sorbent and detected in real textile wastewater samples. The method detection limit of 1 ng mL−1 was attained, with good method linearity and acceptable recovery and precision. The results showed that the studied MIP could be a reliable DSPME sorbent for efficiently analyzing trace aniline in real wastewater samples.

Abstract
Hollow porous molecularly imprinted polymers (HPMIPs) are identified as promising adsorbents with many advantageous properties (e.g., large number of imprinted cavities, highly accessible binding sites, controllable pore structure, and fast mass transfer). Because of such properties, HPMIPs can exhibit improved binding capacity and kinetics to make analyte molecules readily interact with a greater number of recognition sites on the imprinted shell. This review highlights the synthesis and utility of HPMIPs as adsorbents to cover diverse targets of interest (e.g., endocrine disrupting chemicals, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and heavy metal ions). The overall potential of HPMIPs is thus discussed in the context of analytical chemistry with particular focus on the efficient extraction of trace-level targets from complex matrices.

Abstract
The review describes the development of batch solid phase extraction procedures based on dispersive (micro)solid phase extraction with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and magnetic MIPs (MMIPs). Advantages and disadvantages of the various MIPs for dispersive solid phase extraction and dispersive (micro)solid phase extraction are discussed. In addition, an effort has also been made to condense the information regarding MMIPs since there are a great variety of supports (magnetite and magnetite composites with carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, or organic metal framework) and magnetite surface functionalization mechanisms for enhancing MIP synthesis, including reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Finally, drawbacks and future prospects for improving molecularly imprinted (micro)solid phase extraction (MIMSPE) are also appraised.

Abstract
Boronate-affinity magnetic hollow molecularly imprinted polymers (B-MhMIPs) were prepared with sialic acid (SA) as the template, 3-aminophenylboronic acid (APBA) as the functional monomer and glycidilmethacrylate (GMA) as the co-monomer to chemisorb Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Furthermore, the hollow structure made the nanoparticles have more binding sites at both internal and external surfaces, which can facilitate the removal of template molecules from polymers and enhance the adsorption abilities towards SA. After optimizing, the adsorption pH was controlled at 4.0, and this was different from most cis-diol-containing compounds. Under the optimal conditions, the limit of detection for SA was 0.025 μg mL-1 (n = 3). This method was applied to analyze serum samples with different spiked levels, and the recoveries of the SA were in the range of 70.9-106.2%. These results confirmed the superiority of the B-MhMIPs for selective and efficient enrichment of trace SA from complex matrices.

Abstract
A simple and sensitive reduced graphene oxide-modified glassy carbon electrode-based electrochemical sensor was used for the concomitant determination of gallic acid (GA) and protocatechuic (PA) acid. The prepared sensor showed a significant enhancement in synergetic electro-catalytic performance towards GA and PA oxidation. A good resolution of the voltammetry peaks was obtained and a method of square wave voltammetry was developed for detection. The modified electrode was characterized by electrochemical techniques. The optimal experimental parameters were considered. GA and PA exhibited a linear increase in the peak currents with their concentrations in the range from 20 to 144 µmol·L−1 for GA and from 20 to 166 µmol·L−1 for PA, with limits of detection (S/N = 3) of 30.8 µmol·L−1 for GA and 10.2 µmol·L−1 for PA. The sensor applicability was simultaneously tested for the analytical determination of GA and PA in mango juice and exhibited a robust functionality.

Abstract
In this work, a modified pretreatment method using magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) was successfully applied to study the metabolites of an important botanical with ultraperformance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS). The MMIPs for glucoside-specific adsorption was used to identify metabolites of Pulsatilla chinensis in rat feces. Polymers were prepared by using Fe3O4 nanoparticles as the supporting matrix, d-glucose as fragment template, and dopamine as the functional monomer and cross-linker. Results showed that MMIPs exhibited excellent extraction performance, large adsorption capacity (5.65 mg/g), fast kinetics (60 min), and magnetic separation. Furthermore, the MMIPs coupled with UPLC-Q-TOF-MS were successfully utilized for the identification of 17 compounds including 15 metabolites from the Pulsatilla saponin metabolic pool. This study provides a reliable protocol for the separation and identification of saponin metabolites in a complex biological sample, including those from herbal medicines.

Abstract
An effective strategy was proposed to prepare novel magnetic porous molecularly imprinted polymers (MPMIPs) for highly selective extraction of cinnamic acid (CMA) from complex matrices. Characterization and various parameters affecting adsorption and desorption behaviors were investigated. Results revealed adsorption behavior between CMA and MPMIPs followed Freundlich equation adsorption isotherm with a maximum adsorption capacity at 4.35mg/g and pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics with equilibrium time at 60min. Subsequently, MPMIPs were successfully used to selectively extract CMA from apple juice with a relatively satisfactory recovery (92.7-101.4%). Coupling with high-performance liquid chromatography and ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV), the limit of detection (LOD) for CMA was 0.006µg/mL, and the linear range (0.02-10μg/mL) was wide with correlation coefficient at 0.9995. Finally, the contents of CMA in two kinds of apple juices were determined as 0.132 and 0.120μg/mL. Results indicated the superiority of MPMIPs in the selective extraction field.

Abstract
We herein describe a novel adsorbent based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) on the surface of magnetic carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (Fe3O4@CCNs@MIPs) for the separation and purification of six fluoroquinolones (FQs) from egg samples. The obtained Fe3O4@CCNs@MIPs not only exhibited a large surface area and specific recognition toward FQs, but also were easily gathered and separated from the egg samples using an external magnetic field. The morphologies and surface groups of the Fe3O4@CCNs@MIPs were assessed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis. The Fe3O4@CCNs@MIPs exhibited high selectivity toward six structurally similar FQs. An enrichment approach was established for the measurement of six FQs from egg samples using Fe3O4@CCNs@MIPs coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography. The recovery of spiked FQs ranged from 75.2-104.9% and limit of detection was in the range of 3.6-18.4 ng g-1 for the six FQs. Therefore, the proposed method is a promising technique for the enrichment, separation, and determination of FQs from biomatrices.

Abstract
Rapid and efficient extraction of bioactive glycosides from complex natural origins poses a difficult challenge, and then is often inherent bottleneck for their highly utilization. Herein, we propose a strategy to fabricate boronate affinity based surface molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for excellent recognition of glucosides. d-glucose was used as fragment template. Boronic acid, dynamic covalent binding with d-glucose under different pH conditions, was selected as functional monomer to improve specificity. Fe3O4 solid core for surface imprinting using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as crosslinker could control imprinted shell thickness for favorable adsorption capacity and satisfactory mass transfer rate, improve hydrophilicity, separate easily by a magnet. Model adsorption studies showed that the resulting MIPs show specific recognition of glucosides. The equilibrium data fitted well to Langmuir equation and the adsorption process could be described by pseudo-second order model. Furthermore, the MIPs were successfully applied for selective extraction of three flavonoid glucosides (daidzin, glycitin, and genistin) from soybean. Results indicated that selective extraction of glucosides from complex aqueous media based on the prepared MIPs is simple, rapid, efficient and specific. Moreover, this method opens up a universal route for imprinting saccharide with cis-diol group for glycosides recognition.

Abstract
Novel magnetic hollow molecularly imprinted polymers (M-H-MIPs) were proposed for highly selective recognition and fast enrichment of triazines in food samples. M-H-MIPs were prepared on the basis of multi-step swelling polymerization, followed by in situ growth of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of hollow molecularly imprinted polymers (H-MIPs). Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the successful immobilization of Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of H-MIPs. M-H-MIPs could be separated simply using an external magnet. The binding adsorption results indicated that M-H-MIPs displayed high binding capacity and fast mass transfer property and class selective property for triazines. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models fitted the best adsorption models for M-H-MIPs. M-H-MIPs were used to analyze atrazine, simazine, propazine, and terbuthylazine in corn, wheat, and soybean samples. Satisfactory recoveries were in the range of 80.62-101.69%, and relative standard deviation was lower than 5.2%. Limits of detection from 0.16 to 0.39 μg L(-1) were obtained. When the method was applied to test positive samples that were contaminated with triazines, the results agree well with those obtained from an accredited method. Thus, the M-H-MIP-based dispersive solid-phase extraction method proved to be a convenient and practical platform for detection of triazines in food samples.

Abstract
A novel solanesol extraction method based on molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) as the Flash chromatography stationary phase was established and evaluated. Spherical MIP particles in a size range of 250-350 μm (d (0.5)=320 μm) for solanesol were synthesized by suspension polymerization, with imprinting factor of 3.9. The MIP particles (5.5 g) were packed in common Teflon column as the stationary phase while the sample solution and elution solvent were confirmed as methanol and methanol/acetic acid solution (80/20, v/v), loading at 4 ml/min and eluting 8 ml/min, respectively. Under the optimal chromatographic conditions, the adsorption capacity of the MIP-Flash column was determined as 107.3 μmol/g, and in each process, 370.8 mg purified solanesol (98.4%) could be obtained from the extract (20 mM, 40 ml) of tobacco leaves (14.7 g), and the yield of solanesol was 2.5% of the dry weight of tobacco leaves. The results reported here confirm the feasibility to extract highly purified active ingredients directly from natural products on a large scale by MIP-Flash chromatography.

Abstract
A multiplex electrochemical aptasensor was developed for simultaneous detection of two antibiotics such as chloramphenicol (CAP) and oxytetracycline (OTC), and high-capacity magnetic hollow porous nanotracers coupling exonuclease-assisted target recycling was used to improve sensitivity. The cascade amplification process consists of the exonuclease-assisted target recycling amplification and metal ions encoded magnetic hollow porous nanoparticles (MHPs) to produce voltammetry signals. Upon the specific recognition of aptamers to targets (CAP and OTC), exonuclease I (Exo I) selectively digested the aptamers which were bound with CAP and OTC, then the released CAP and OTC participated new cycling to produce more single DNA, which can act as trigger strands to hybrid with nanotracers to generate further signal amplification. MHPs were used as carriers to load more amounts of metal ions and coupling with Exo I assisted cascade target recycling can amplify the signal for about 12 folds compared with silica based nanotracers. Owing to the dual signal amplification, the linear range between signals and the concentrations of CAP and OTC were obtained in the range of 0.0005-50 ng mL(-1). The detection limits of CAP and OTC were 0.15 and 0.10 ng mL(-1) (S/N=3) which is more than 2 orders lower than commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent immunoassay (ELISA) method, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to simultaneously detection of CAP and OTC in milk samples. Besides, this aptasensor can be applied to other antibiotics detection by changing the corresponding aptamer. The whole scheme is facile, selective and sensitive enough for antibiotics screening in food safety.
