Evaluation of graphene-based sorbent in the determination of polar environmental contaminants in water by micro-solid phase extraction-high performance liquid chromatography

Cellulose-based adsorbents for solid phase extraction and recovery of pharmaceutical residues from water

Cellulose has attracted interest from researchers both in academic and industrial sectors due to its unique structural and physicochemical properties. The ease of surface modification of cellulose by the integration of nanomaterials, magnetic components, metal organic frameworks and polymers has made them a promising adsorbent for solid phase extraction of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceutical residues. This review summarizes, compares, and contrasts different types of cellulose-based adsorbents along with their applications in adsorption, extraction and pre-concentration of pharmaceutical residues in water for subsequent analysis. In addition, a comparison in efficiency of cellulose-based adsorbents and other types of adsorbents that have been used for the extraction of pharmaceuticals in water is presented. From our observation, cellulose-based materials have principally been investigated for the adsorption of pharmaceuticals in water. However, this review aims to shift the focus of researchers to the application of these adsorbents in the effective pre-concentration of pharmaceutical pollutants from water at trace concentrations, for quantification. At the end of the review, the challenges and future perspectives regarding cellulose-based adsorbents are discussed, thus providing an in-depth overview of the current state of the art in cellulose hybrid adsorbents for extraction of pharmaceuticals from water. This is expected to inspire the development of solid phase exraction materials that are efficient, relatively cheap, and prepared in a sustainable way.

Transiently gene-modulated cell reporter for ultrasensitive detection of estrogen-like compounds in tap water

Abnormal elevation of indispensable steroid hormone estrogens and exposure to exogenous estrogen-like compounds pose adverse health effects to aquatic animals and human alike. These compounds generally display functionally important estrogenic activity even at extremely low picomolar concentrations. In this study we identified one critical but lethal gene (TAF1) that remarkably represses estrogenic activity. This gene is selected as a candidate for genetically modulating an estrogen-responding cell line. To overcome its lethality, instead of adopting a gene knockout strategy, we developed a transient TAF1 depletion strategy using a designed small interfering RNA. By the transient knockdown of TAF1 in the estrogen-responding reporter cell line, the maximum induction signals for endogenous estrogen 17β-estradiol (E2) and environmental estrogens 17α-ethynyl estradiol (EE2) and bisphenol compounds were enhanced by 4.8-13.3 folds. The limit of detection for EE2 is about 8 × 10^-15 mol/L. Moreover, by the established method, trace estrogenic activity (14.7-24.2 pg E2 equivalents (E2Eq)/L) can be detected in a portion of Tap water samples.

Sample Preparation and Analytical Methods for Steroid Hormones in Environmental and Food Samples: An Update Since 2012

Steroid hormones (SHs) have been widely used over the past few decades as both human and veterinary drugs to prevent or treat infectious diseases and anti-inflammatory benefits in clinical. Unfortunately, their residues in foodstuffs and environmental samples can produce adverse effects on human and animal life such as disrupting the endocrine system. For these reasons, sensitive, simple and efficient methods have been developed for the determination of these compounds in various matrices. This critical review summarized the articles published in the period from 2012 to 2019 and can be used to help researchers to understand development of the sample pretreatment protocols and analytical methods used to detect SHs. The developed extraction and purification techniques used for steroids in different samples, such as cloud point extraction, solid phase extraction based on different novel materials, microextraction methods, QuEChERS and other methods are summarized and discussed. Analytical methods used to quantify these compounds, such as different chromatography methods, electrochemical methods, as well as other methods, are illustrated and compared. We focused on the latest advances in SHs pretreatment, and the application of new technologies in SHs analysis.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate-multi-walled carbon nanotubes-coated-membrane solid phase extraction of glucocorticoids in aqueous matrices

A membrane-based solid phase extraction (SPE)-ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method was developed for the determination of nine glucocorticoids in water. This new hybrid SPE approach involved the deposition of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on a piece of polypropylene membrane that served as the extraction device. Hitherto, such a sample preparation procedure has not been applied to the analysis of water contaminants before. The use of the surfactant helped to disperse the MWCNTs effectively so that they were coated uniformly onto the polypropylene membrane. This increased the overall extraction efficiency of the procedure. Characterisation of the SDS-MWCNTs material was performed using transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The membrane device did not require a pre-conditioning step. The most favourable extraction parameters such as type of surfactant, percentage of surfactant, type of desorption solvent, stirring rate, desorption time, extraction time, temperature, salting-out effect, pH and diameter of MWCNTs were obtained. The method showed linearity ranges from 0.2 to 100 ng mL^-1 for hydrocortisone, dexamethasone, cortisone acetate and beclomethasone dipropionate, and 0.5-100 ng mL^-1 for the rest of the analytes. Limits of detection ranging from 0.019 to 0.098 ng mL^-1, and limits of quantification ranging from 0.065 to 0.326 ng mL^-1, were obtained for the analytes. The intra-day repeatability was between 1.77 and 3.56% while the inter-day reproducibility was between 2.69 and 9.53%, respectively. The method was used to analyse glucocorticoids as contaminants in the canal water samples.

Graphene and zeolite as adsorbents in bar-micro-solid phase extraction of pharmaceutical compounds of diverse polarities

A bar micro-solid phase (bar μ-SPE) extraction method using either graphene or zeolite or their mixtures as an adsorbent, coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (using a C1 column) was developed for the simultaneous determination of pharmaceutical compounds (metformin (MET), buformin (BUF), phenformin (PHEN) and propranolol (PROP)) of diverse polarity (log P from −1.82 to 3.10). Parameters influencing the extraction, such as conditioning solvents, pH of the sample, sample volume, amount of adsorbent, stirring rate, time of extraction, type and volume of desorption solvent and time of desorption were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the extraction method using graphene (extraction efficiency, % EE, ∼6–15%) resulted in the least amount of extracted drugs. However, the use of zeolite and zeolite/graphene mixtures improves the % EE significantly, i.e. 30% for PHEN and 42% for PROP using zeolite; 22% for MET and 18% for BUF using the adsorbent mixture. Under similar conditions, enrichment factors for these drugs range from 11–15. The validated method was performed for the determination of the drugs that were spiked to urine samples. Good recoveries ranging from 72.8 to 116% were achieved.

High-Silica Zeolites as Sorbent Media for Adsorption and Pre-Concentration of Pharmaceuticals in Aqueous Solutions

The present work focused on the use of high-silica commercial zeolites as sorbent media for pharmaceuticals in an aqueous matrix. As drug probes, ketoprofen, hydrochlorothiazide, and atenolol were selected, because of their occurrence in surface waters and effluents from wastewater treatment plants. Pharmaceuticals adsorption was evaluated for two Faujasite topology zeolites with Silica/Alumina Ratio 30 and 200. The selected zeolites were demonstrated to be efficient sorbents towards all investigated pharmaceuticals, thanks to their high saturation capacities (from 12 to 32% w/w) and binding constants. These results were corroborated by thermal and structural analyses, which revealed that adsorption occurred inside zeolite’s porosities, causing lattice modifications. Finally, zeolites have been tested as a pre-concentration media in the dispersive-solid phase extraction procedure. Recoveries higher than 95% were gained for ketoprofen and hydrochlorothiazide and approximately 85% for atenolol, at conditions that promoted the dissolution of the neutral solute into a phase mainly organic. The results were obtained by using a short contact time (5 min) and reduced volume of extraction (500 µL), without halogenated solvents. These appealing features make the proposed procedure a cost and time saving method for sample enrichment as well as for the regeneration of exhausted sorbent, rather than the more energetically expensive thermal treatment.

Combination of Counter Current Salting-Out Homogenous Liquid-Liquid Extraction with Dispersive Liquid-Liquid Microextraction for the High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Determination of Environmental Estrogens in Water Samples

In this paper, counter current salting-out homogenous liquid-liquid extraction was combined with dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction for the determination of environmental estrogens in water samples by high-performance liquid chromatography. In this method, initially, sodium chloride was filled into a syringe and a mixture of water sample and acetonitrile was driven to pass through the syringe. Due to salting-out effect, fine droplets of acetonitrile went up through the remaining mixture and aggregated as a separated layer on the top. Then, the collected organic phase (acetonitrile) was removed with a syringe and mixed with carbon tetrachloride (extraction solvent). In the second step, the mixed organic phase was rapidly injected into 5 mL of distilled water to further enrich the analytes. Good linearity was obtained in the concentration range of 2.0~200 ng/mL for diethylstilbestrol (DES) and 8.0~200 ng/mL for octylphenol (OP), respectively. Limits of detection were 0.09 ng/mL for DES and 0.20 ng/mL for OP, respectively. Relative standard deviations for intra- and inter-day precisions were less than 2.1 and 3.1%, respectively. Finally, the established method was successfully applied to determine DES and OP in river water, well water, bottled water and campus drinking water samples with recoveries in the range from 81.0 to 105.9%.

A nanocomposite fluorescent probe of polyaniline, graphene oxide and quantum dots incorporated into highly selective polymer for lomefloxacin detection

A nanocomposite fluorescent probe based on fluorescence quenching was fabricated and utilized for the detection of lomefloxacin. The fabricated probe integrated the high sensitivity of quantum dots, the excellent selectivity of molecularly imprinted polymer and the high adsorption affinity of graphene oxide and polyaniline. The probe exhibited good sensitivity, high specificity, and rapidity for lomefloxacin monitoring. Fluorescence emission was reduced linearly by lomefloxacin from 0.10 to 50.0 μg L^-1 and the probe exhibited a low limit of detection of 0.07 μg L^-1. The nanooptosensor successfully detected lomefloxacin in milk, chicken meat and egg samples. Recoveries were obtained in the range of 81.5-99.6% and the RSDs were below 7%. The results of this method agreed well with results of HPLC but provided higher sensitivity. This easily fabricated nanocomposite probe could be developed into a highly sensitive and selective optosensor to detect other organic compounds in various complex samples.

Simple, selective, and identifiable analysis of aromatic monoamines with a surrogate on sulfuric acid impregnated filters by derivatization with an acid chloride reagent and HPLC with fluorescence detection

A simple and selective derivatization and detection method for o-toluidine, o-anisidine, and 2,4-dimethylaniline was developed using a sulfuric acid impregnated filter, 4-(N-chloroformylmethyl-N-methylamino)-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole, and a surrogate (o-ethylaniline), which allowed simple, rapid, selective, and identifiable analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. These amines were successfully derivatized in a pH 5 buffer solution containing acetonitrile at 35°C for 10 min (linear in the range 0-400 ng/mL, n = 5, aromatic amines: r > 0.9980, aromatic amines with surrogate correction: r > 0.9997, aromatic amines in the presence of phenol and aliphatic amines with surrogate correction: r > 0.9996). The retention times of these derivatized aromatic amines were <17 min using isocratic elution. No derivatives corresponding to phenol or the aliphatic amines (i.e., cyclohexylamine and hexylamine) were detected in the reaction solution. This method can therefore be considered applicable for the analysis of samples from occupational environments, as samples were successfully extracted, derivatized, and measured by high-performance liquid chromatography following spiking of a sulfuric acid impregnated filter with aromatic amines, phenols, and aliphatic amines. Indeed, only the aromatic amines were quantitatively detected without pretreatment, with no other spiked compounds being detected.

Porous membrane protected micro-solid-phase extraction: A review of features, advancements and applications

Membrane protected micro-solid-phase extraction (μ-SPE) was introduced in 2006 as an alternative to multistep SPE. μ-SPE is based on packing of very small amount of sorbent inside the porous membrane sheet whose edges are heat sealed to fabricate a μ-SPE device. This device performs clean up, extraction, and pre-concentration in a single step. It suits best for extraction of complex samples as sorbent is effectively protected inside the membrane and extraneous matter cannot adsorb over it. This review summarizes most important aspects of μ-SPE including basic principles, extraction procedure, different formats, sorbents employed and affecting parameters. The article also provides a brief account on modified μ-SPE procedures where μ-SPE was either combined with other techniques or some major changes were introduced in original procedure. Finally, the applications of μ-SPE in environmental, food and biological analysis are described. At the end, advantages and pitfalls of μ-SPE are critically appraised.
