Graphene aerogel based monolith for effective solid-phase extraction of trace environmental pollutants from water samples

Porous chlorine-functionalized covalent organic framework anchored graphene aerogel composite for synergically enhanced solid phase microextraction of polychlorinated naphthalene in environmental water

The residues of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) produced in multiple industrial production and life processes are continuously entering environmental waters through atmospheric deposition and land drainage, and the water pollution caused by PCNs is continuing public concern due to their potential threat to aquatic ecosystems and public health. Herein, a new chlorine-functionalized covalent organic framework anchored graphene aerogel (COF-GA) was synthesized by covalent modification technology and used as fiber coating of solid-phase microextraction for synergically enhanced extraction of PCNs in environmental water. The extraction efficiency of COF-GA coated fiber was superior to commercial fiber due to the multiple interactions (π-π, hydrophobic interaction, and halogen bonding interaction). The COF-GA coated fiber has good stability, can avoid water vapor interference at 80 °C for a long time (30 -50 min) to maintain adsorption equilibrium, and can be reused at least 96 times. Combined with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, a sensitive method for the high-efficient enrichment (enrichment factors were 501 -7453 folds) and ultra-sensitive detection (LODs were 0.001 -0.428 pg/mL) of PCNs in environmental water was established. The enrichment factor for PCNs is significantly higher than in previous studies. This proposed method provides new technical support for the daily monitoring and risk assessment of trace PCNs in environmental water.

Efficient dispersive solid phase extraction of trace nitrophenol pollutants in water with triazine porous organic polymer modified nanofiber membrane

Detecting trace endocrine disruptors in water is crucial for evaluating the water quality. In this work, a innovative modified polyacrylonitrile@cyanuric chloride-triphenylphosphine nanofiber membrane (PAN@CC-TPS) was prepared by in situ growing triazine porous organic polymers on the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, and used in the dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) to enrich trace nitrobenzene phenols (NPs) in water. The resluted PAN@CC-TPS nanofiber membrane consisted of numerous PAN nanofibers cover with CC-TPS solid spheres (∼2.50 μm) and owned abundant functional groups, excellent enrichment performance and good stability. In addition, the method based on PAN@CC-TPS displayed outstanding capacity in detecting the trace nitrobenzene phenols, with 0.50-1.00 μg/L of the quantification, 0.10-0.80 μg/L of the detection limit, 85.35-113.55 % of the recovery efficiency, and 98.08-103.02 of the enrichment factor, which was comparable to most materials. Meanwhile, when PAN@CC-TPS was adopted in the real water samples (sea water and river water), the high enrichment factors and recovery percentages strongly confirmed the feasibility of PAN@CC-TPS for enriching and detecting the trace NPs. Besides, the related mechanism of extracting NPs on PAN@CC-TPS mainly involved the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking and hydrophobic effect.

Preparation of poly (methacrylic acid)/graphene oxide aerogel as solid-phase extraction adsorbent for extraction and determination of dopamine and tyrosine in urine of patients with depression

Dopamine (DA) and l-tyrosine (l-Tyr) are neurotransmitters involved in various neuropsychiatric disorders. Therefore, it is important to monitor their levels for diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we synthesized poly (methacrylic acid)/graphene oxide aerogels (p(MAA)/GOA) by in situ polymerization and freeze-drying using graphene oxide and methacrylic acid as substrates. Then, the p(MAA)/GOA were applied as solid-phase extraction adsorbents to extract DA and l-Tyr from urine samples, followed by quantification using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The p(MAA)/GOA showed better adsorption performance for DA and l-Tyr than commercial adsorbents, likely as a result of the strong adsorption of the target analytes via π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions. Further, the developed method had good linearity (r > 0.9990) at concentrations of DA and l-Tyr of 0.075-2.0 and 0.75-20.0 μg mL^-1, respectively, as well as a limit of detection of 0.018-0.048 μg mL^-1, limit of quantitation of 0.059-0.161 μg mL^-1, spiked recovery of 91.1-104.0%, and interday precision of 3.58-7.30%.The method was successfully applied to determine DA and l-Tyr in the urine samples of patients suffering from depression, demonstrating its potential for clinical applications.

Reduced Graphene Oxide Aerogels Cartridges for Solid Phase Extraction of Benzotriazoles

UV-benzotriazoles have been identified as water micropollutants that cause serious problems for human health and the environment. Their low concentration in water bodies complicates their detection by direct water analysis, slowing the corrective actions to avoid bioaccumulation. In this regard, the use of graphene-based materials with a high affinity for non-polar molecules has been demonstrated to be a potential tool for the optimal separation and concentration of this type of molecules in solid phase extraction (SPE) processes. This work evaluates the potential of novel reduced graphene oxide aerogels (rGO) as extractants of mixtures of three UV-benzotriazoles in water at low concentrations. These rGO aerogels incorporate graphenic domains into a tough structure of polymeric chains by adding graphene oxide during the synthesis of resorcinol-formaldehyde gels. Aerogels with a different content and ordering of graphenic domains were obtained and characterized using Raman, XRD, SEM and nitrogen adsorption isotherms (-196 °C). The rGO aerogels that performed better as solid phase extractants were those containing 60% rGO. Aerogels with lower rGO contents (40%) required a high-temperature (2000 °C) treatment to render competitive results. The SPE methodology using selected rGO aerogels was optimized by varying the elution solvent, elution time and volume. The best performances, i.e., recoveries of 80-100% and enrichment factors of 12.5-50, were accomplished when using 0.8 mL of tetrahydrofuran (THF) as an elution solvent. As a result, a fast (10 min) and simple extraction method of UV-benzotriazoles in water was attained, achieving a detection limit of 1 ng mL^-1. Selected aerogels were finally tested for the SPE of spiked samples of river waters, showing a similar performance to that observed with synthetic mixtures.

Nanomaterials with Excellent Adsorption Characteristics for Sample Pretreatment: A Review

Sample pretreatment in analytical chemistry is critical, and the selection of materials for sample pretreatment is a key factor for high enrichment ability, good practicality, and satisfactory recoveries. In this review, the recent progress of the sample pretreatment methods based on various nanomaterials (i.e., carbon nanomaterials, porous nanomaterials, and magnetic nanomaterials) with excellent adsorption efficiency, selectivity, and reproducibility, as well as their applications, are presented. Due to the unique nanoscale physical–chemical properties, magnetic nanomaterials have been used for the extraction of target analytes by easy-to-handle magnetic separation under a magnetic field, which can avoid cumbersome centrifugation and filtration steps. This review also highlights the preparation process and reaction mechanism of nanomaterials used in the sample pretreatment methods, which have been applied for the extraction organophosphorus pesticides, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, phenoxy carboxylic acids, tetracycline antibiotics, hazardous metal ions, and rosmarinic acid. In addition, the remaining challenges and future directions for nanomaterials used as sorbents in the sample pretreatment are discussed.

Rapid synthesis of graphite phase carbon nitride/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 with hierarchical structure and its superior adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from aqueous solution

Graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) incorporating zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocomposite (g-C₃N₄ /ZIF-8) with hierarchical structure was synthesized successfully by simple and rapid in situ growth method at room temperature. The composites were used as an adsorbent of solid-phase extraction (SPE) and the superior adsorptive removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for the first time. Under several optimum conditions, the g-C₃N₄ /ZIF-8-SPE-HPLC-FLD method show low detection limits (0.006-3.41 μg L^-1) and limit of quantification (0.02-11.3 μg L^-1), wide linear ranges from 0.02 to 1000 μg L^-1 for all compounds, correlation coefficients (r) of more than 0.9968, and satisfying reproducibility (relative standard deviations, RSDs < 4.0% for intra-day, RSDs < 8.3% for inter-day), the spiked recoveries at two levels of 10.0, 50.0 μg L^-1 were in the range of 77.4%-114% with the RSDs less than 8.66%. In addition, the g-C₃N₄/ZIF-8 nanocomposites demonstrated excellent enrichment ability and extraction efficiency for PAHs compared with commercial adsorbents, which might since there were strong π-π stacking force, hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and more adsorption sites compared with other adsorbents. Finally, the g-C₃N₄ /ZIF-8 based SPE method was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to detect fifteen PAHs in environmental water samples successfully.

[Recent advance of new sample preparation materials in the analysis and detection of environmental pollutants]

To successfully analyze complex samples and detect trace targets, sample pretreatment is essential. Efficient sample pretreatment techniques can remove or reduce interference from the sample matrix. It can also enrich analytes, thereby improving analytical accuracy and sensitivity. In recent years, various sample preparation techniques, including SPE, magnetic dispersion SPE, pipette tip SPE, stir bar extraction, fiber SPME, and in-tube SPME, have received increasing attention in environmental analysis and monitoring. The extraction efficiency mainly depends on the type of adsorbent material. Therefore, the development of efficient adsorbents is a crucial step toward sample preparation. This review summarizes and discusses the research advances in extraction materials over recent years. These extraction materials contain inorganic adsorbents, organic adsorbents, and inorganic-organic hybrid materials such as graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, inorganic aerogels, organic aerogels, triazinyl-functionalized materials, triazine-based polymers, molecularly imprinted polymers, covalent organic frameworks, metal-organic frameworks, and their derivatives. These materials have been applied to extract different types of pollutants, including metal ions, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, plasticizers, alkanes, phenols, chlorophenols, chlorobenzenes, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, perfluorosulfonic acids, perfluorocarboxylic acids, estrogens, drug residues, and pesticide residues, from environmental samples (such as water and soil samples). These sample preparation materials possess high surface areas, numerous adsorption sites, and allow extraction via various mechanisms, such as π-π, electrostatic, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic interactions, as well as hydrogen and halogen bond formation. Various sample pretreatment techniques based on these extraction materials have been combined with various detection methods, including chromatography, mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and ion mobility spectroscopy, and have been extensively used for the determination of environmental pollutants. The existing challenges associated with the development of sample preparation techniques are proposed, and prospects for such extraction materials in environmental analysis and monitoring are discussed. Major trends in the field, including the development of efficient extraction materials with high enrichment ability, good selectivity, excellent thermal stability, and chemical stability, are discussed. Green sample pretreatment materials, environmentally friendly synthesis methods, and green sample pretreatment methods are also explored. Rapid sample pretreatment methods that can be conducted within minutes or seconds are of significant interest. Further, online sample pretreatment and automatic analysis methods have attracted increasing attention. Besides, real-time analysis and in situ detection have been important development directions, and are expected to be widely applicable in environmental analysis, biological detection, and other fields. Modern synthesis technology should be introduced to synthesize specific extraction materials. Controllable preparation methods for extraction materials, such as the in situ growth or in situ preparation of extraction coatings, will acquire importance in coming years. It will also be important to adopt high-performance materials from other fields for sample pretreatment. Organic-inorganic hybrid extraction materials can combine the advantages both organic materials and inorganic materials, and mutually compensate for any disadvantages. Extraction materials doped with nanomaterials are also promising. Although existing sample pretreatment techniques are relatively efficient, it is still imperative to develop novel sample preparation methods.

Graphene oxide aerogel assembled by dimethylaminopropylamine /N-isopropylethylenediamine for the removal of copper ions

Graphene Oxide Monolith composites (GOMs) were prepared using dimethylaminopropylamine (DMPDA) and N-isopropylethylenediamine (IPEDA) with one-step method in water medium, respectively. Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) tests proved the formation of new structure and credible interactions between crosslinkers and GO. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed distinct change of morphology after complexing. Bath adsorption tests suggested that the fast adsorption of copper ions (II) was strongly affected by pH, ionic strength, temperature, and concentration, etc.. Isothermal Langmuir and Freundlich kinetic model showed the different degree of fitting conformity according to different conditions. SEM and XRD further provided a supporter of adsorption of copper ions onto GOMs, and Density functional theory (DFT) was used to analyze the crosslinking details of DMPDA and GO and the adsorption mechanism of copper ions. The theoretical calculation results clarified an efficacious and quantitative understanding for the crosslinking and adsorption mechanism.

Solid phase extraction based on trimethylsilyloxy silica aerogel

Solid-phase extraction (SPE) based on trimethylsilyloxy-modified silica aerogel was developed for extraction of chemotherapeutic drugs from water. The developed method is easy and affordable, can be performed in separating funnel and does not require a vacuum and SPE manifold. The extraction and recovery of cyclophosphamide (CYP), dexamethasone (DEX), and paclitaxel (TAX) by the aerogel from water were investigated. The factors governing the extraction efficiency such as sample pH, sample volume, volume of eluent and concentration of analytes were studied. The LOD and LOQ of the developed method were calculated and linearity was found in the range of 4–100 μg L⁻¹. The extraction efficiency of the aerogel was compared to that of other SPE cartridges, Oasis HLB, Strata-X-C, C18 and polymeric reversed phase, and the aerogel showed similar or better performance than the other commercial cartridges available on the market. The developed method was also used to extract chemotherapeutic drugs spiked in hospital wastewater.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Micro- and Nano-Particles. A review

In recent years, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have become an excellent solution to the selective and sensitive determination of target molecules in complex matrices where other similar and relative structural compounds could coexist. Although MIPs show the inherent properties of the polymers, including stability, robustness, and easy/cheap synthesis, some of their characteristics can be enhanced, or new functionalities can be obtained when nanoparticles are incorporated in their polymeric structure. The great variety of nanoparticles available significantly increase the possibility of finding the adequate design of nanostructured MIP for each analytical problem. Moreover, different structures (i.e., monolithic solids or MIPs micro/nanoparticles) can be produced depending on the used synthesis approach. This review aims to summarize and describe the most recent and innovative strategies since 2015, based on the combination of MIPs with nanoparticles. The role of the nanoparticles in the polymerization, as well as in the imprinting and adsorption efficiency, is also discussed through the review.

Magnetic-Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction Based on Graphene Oxide-Fe3O4 Nanocomposites Followed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Fluorescence for the Preconcentration and Determination of Terazosin Hydrochloride in Human Plasma

In the present study, a facile modified impregnation method was employed to synthesize superparamagnetic graphene oxide-Fe3O4 (GO-Fe3O4) nanocomposites. Based on the GO-Fe3O4 as adsorbent, a simple and fast magnetic-dispersive solid phase extraction followed by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (M-dSPE-HPLC-FL) method was established and validated for the preconcentration and determination of terazosin hydrochloride (TRZ) in human plasma samples. The obtained nanomaterials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry. Different parameters affecting the extraction efficiency, such as sample pH, amount of sorbent, extraction time, elution solvent and its volume and desorption time, were evaluated and optimized. The linearity of the proposed method was excellent over the range 0.3-50.0 ng mL-1 with an acceptable coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.9989). The limit of quantification and limit of detection were found to be 0.3 and 0.09 ng mL-1, respectively, and the preconcentration factor of 10 was achieved. Intra- and inter-day precision expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD %, n = 6) were between 2.2-3.8% and 4.7-6.4%, respectively. Accuracy, estimated by recovery assays, was 97.7-106.6% with RSD ≤ 5.2%. Ultimately, the applicability of the method was successfully confirmed by the extraction and determination of TRZ in human plasma samples.

Graphene Oxide-Based Dispersive-Solid Phase Extraction for Preconcentration and Determination of Ampicillin Sodium and Clindamycin Hydrochloride Antibiotics in Environmental Water Samples Followed by HPLC-UV Detection

In this work, a reusable graphene oxide (GO) based dispersive-solid phase extraction (d-SPE) was synthesized and used for the analysis of trace ampicillin sodium (AMP) and clindamycin hydrochloride (CLI) in water samples followed by high performance liquid chromatography-UV detection (HPLC-UV). Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of pH and volume of the sample solution, contact time, adsorption isotherms, temperature, and desorption conditions. The maximum adsorption capacities of AMP and CLI on GO nanosheets were found to be 33.33 mg g^-1 and 47 mg g^-1, respectively. The adsorption isotherm data can be well fitted by Temkin (AMP and CLI) and Freundlich (AMP), and the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model. The thermodynamic parameters were calculated, indicated that the adsorption process of both analytes were spontaneous and exothermic. In addition, the d-SPE following HPLC analyses showed good linearity in the range of 0.5-200 ng mL^-1 (R²= 0.999) for AMP and 1-200 ng mL^-1 (R²= 0.999) for CLI, with LOD of 0.04 and 0.24 ng mL^-1 for AMP and CLI, respectively. The percent of extraction recoveries, intra and inter-day precisions (expressed as RSD %, n = 3) were in the range of 96.4-101.6%, 2.2-3.0, and 3.7-4.7 for AMP as well as 94.2-98.6%, 2.2-3.8, and 3.5-4.6 for CLI, respectively. The preconcentration factor of 20 was achieved for both analytes. From these results, it can be concluded that the validated method is a simple, cost-effective and repeatable method for analysis of AMP and CLI in water samples and provide a new platform for antibiotics decontamination.

Applications of three-dimensional graphenes for preconcentration, extraction, and sorption of chemical species: a review

This review (with 115 refs) summarizes applications of 3-dimensional graphene (3DGs) and its derivatives in the fields of preconcentration, extraction, and sorption. Following an introduction into the field (including a definition of the materials treated here), the properties and synthetic strategies for 3DGs are described. The next section covers applications of 3DG-based adsorbents in solid phase extraction of organic species including drugs, phthalate esters, chlorophenols, aflatoxins, insecticides, and pesticides. Another section treats applications of 3DGs in solid phase microextraction of species such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, and pesticides. We also describe how the efficiency of assays may be improved by using these materials as a sorbent. A final section covers conclusions and perspectives. Application of ZIF-8–graphene oxide sponge to a solid phase extraction method for the analysis of sex hormones in milk and milk products by high-performance liquid chromatography

A zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) incorporating a graphene oxide sponge (GOS) nanocomposite (ZIF-8–GOS) was synthesized successfully by a simple one-pot preparation method.

In-syringe extraction using compressible and self-recoverable, amphiphilic graphene aerogel as sorbent for determination of phenols

Graphene aerogels (GAs) have demonstrated great promise as sorbent materials. However, the intrinsically hydrophobic GAs are unsuitable for extraction of highly water-soluble analytes. Moreover, lack of compressibility limits the recyclability of GAs. In this work, an interesting type of water-induced self-recoverable amphiphilic GA was synthesized and employed as sorbent to extract nine priority phenols, listed as priority pollutants by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, from aqueous samples. The water-induced self-recoverability gives the GA the characteristic of a sponge, providing high recyclability and long-life. The aerogel was placed in a 2-mL microsyringe for in-syringe extraction of the phenols. The GA exhibits amphiphilicity due to the cross-linking by polyvinyl alcohol. At the same time, it exhibited selectivity to the water-soluble phenols. The extracted phenols were eluted with acetonitrile from the GA and the final extract was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV). The results showed that this method provided low limits of detection for the phenols (0.089-0.015 µg/L), good linearity (r² ≥ 0.9956) and low relative standard deviations (≤6.8%). The optimized method was applied successfully to river water samples. The simple in-syringe extraction procedure in combination with HPLC-UV analysis was demonstrated to be efficient, fast and convenient.

A porous graphene sorbent coated with titanium(IV)-functionalized polydopamine for selective lab-in-syringe extraction of phosphoproteins and phosphopeptides

A novel polydopamine coated three-dimensional porous graphene aerogel sorbent carrying immobilized titanium(IV) ions (denoted as Ti⁴⁺@PDA@GA) was fabricated without using an organic solvent. The material is shown to be a viable carbon foam type of monolithic sorbent for selective lab-in-syringe enrichment of phosphoproteins and phosphopeptides. The phosphoproteins can be separated from a sample by aspiration and then bind to the sorbent. The analytes then can be dispensed within 5 min. The weight percent of titanium in the monolith typically is 14%, and the absorption capacities for the model proteins β-casein and κ-casein are 1300 and 1345 mg g^-1, respectively. The absorption capacities for nonphosphoproteins are much smaller, typically 160 mg g^-1 for β-lactoglobulin, 125 mg g^-1 for bovine serum, and 4.8 mg g^-1 for lysozyme. The results demonstrate that the selectivity for phosphoproteins was excellent on multiple biological samples including standard protein mixtures, spiked human blood serum, and drinking milk. The selective enrichment of phosphopeptides also makes the method a promising tool in phosphoproteomics. A hybrid monolithic column based on layered double hydroxide-alginate hydrogel for selective solid phase extraction of lead ions in food and water samples

In order to develop an accurate and precise determination method based on solid phase extraction of Pb(II) in food and water samples, a hybrid monolithic column based on layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanosheets-alginate hydrogel has been synthesized. Combining the advantages of porous 3D framework of hydrogel with selective adsorption of LDHs toward Pb(II), the hydrogel-based hybrid monolithic column shows enhanced enrichment selectivity and efficiency for target ions. Effects of hydrogel composition, pH, concentration and type of eluent, sample volume, and interfering ions on the recoveries of the analytes were also investigated. Under the optimal experiment conditions of method, the limit of detection, preconcentration factor and precision as RSD% are found to be 0.39 μg L^-1, 53.7 and 2.65%, respectively. Trace Pb(II) can be quantitatively preconcentrated at pH 6.0 with recoveries >97%. Finally, the method was successfully verified by analyzing spiked Pb²⁺ in water and drinking samples.

In-syringe solid-phase extraction for on-site sampling of pyrethroids in environmental water samples

On-site sampling is an analytical approach that can ensure the accuracy of monitoring data and enhance the effectiveness of environmental protection measures. In the present work, an in-syringe solid-phase extraction (SPE) device was designed for on-site sampling of trace contaminants in environmental water samples followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Template assisted freeze casting followed by hydrazine vapor reduction approach was used to synthesize a hierarchical porous graphene aerogel (HPGA), which was used as the sorbent in the in-syringe SPE device. Environmental degradable pyrethroids were selected as the model analytes. Owing to the large specific surface area and hydrophobicity of HPGA, the target molecules could be completely extracted during one aspirating/dispensing cycle. The analytes were stable on the sorbent for at least 72 h when the device was stored under airtight and light-free conditions, and were not affected by the pH value of sample solution. All results demonstrated that the device could meet the requirements of on-site sampling. For practical application, the limits of detection were found to be in the range of 0.012-0.11 ng mL^-1 under the optimized conditions, and satisfactory recoveries in the range of 65.7-105.9% were obtained for the analysis of real samples. The results of this study demonstrate the immense potential of HPGA for the enrichment of trace environmental pollutants, and meanwhile promote the application of the in-syringe SPE technique as a promising candidate for on-site sampling.

Superparamagnetic graphene oxide-based dispersive-solid phase extraction for preconcentration and determination of tamsulosin hydrochloride in human plasma by high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection

In the present study, superparamagnetic graphene oxide-Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites were successfully prepared by a modified impregnation method (MGO_mi) and their application as a sorbent in the magnetic-dispersive solid phase extraction (M-dSPE) mode to the preconcentration and determination of tamsulosin hydrochloride (TMS) in human plasma was investigated by coupling with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV). The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of the prepared nanocomposites were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). Some factors affecting the extraction efficiency, including the pH value, amount of sorbent, extraction time, elution solvent and its volume, and desorption time were studied and optimized. Magnetic nanocomposites plasma extraction of TMS following HPLC analyses showed a linear calibration curve in the range of 0.5-50.0ngmL^-1 with an acceptable correlation coefficient (R²=0.9988). The method was sensitive, with a low limit of detection (0.17ngmL^-1) and quantification (0.48ngmL^-1). Inter- and intra-day precision expressed as relative standard deviation (n=3) and the preconcentration factor, were found to be 5.6-7.2%, 2.9-4.2% and 10, respectively. Good recoveries (98.1-101.4%) with low relative standard deviations (4.2-5.0%) indicated that the matrices under consideration do not significantly affect the extraction process. Due to its high precision and accuracy, the developed method may be a HPLC-UV alternative with M-dSPE for bioequivalence analysis of TMS in human plasma.

New magnetic graphene-based inorganic-organic sol-gel hybrid nanocomposite for simultaneous analysis of polar and non-polar organophosphorus pesticides from water samples using solid-phase extraction

A new graphene-based tetraethoxysilane-methyltrimethoxysilane sol-gel hybrid magnetic nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@G-TEOS-MTMOS) was synthesised, characterized and successfully applied in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) for simultaneous analysis of polar and non-polar organophosphorus pesticides from several water samples. The Fe₃O₄@G-TEOS-MTMOS nanocomposite was characterized using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Separation, determination and quantification were achieved using gas chromatography coupled with micro electron capture detector. Adsorption capacity of the sorbent was calculated using Langmuir equation. MSPE was linear in the range 100-1000 pg mL^-1 for phosphamidon and dimethoate, and 10-100 pg mL^-1 for chlorpyrifos and diazinon, with limit of detection (S/N = 3) of 19.8, 23.7, 1.4 and 2.9 pg mL^-1 for phosphamidon, dimethoate, diazinon and chlorpyrifos, respectively. The LODs obtained is well below the maximum residual level (100 pg mL^-1) as set by European Union for pesticides in drinking water. Acceptable precision (%RSD) was achieved for intra-day (1.3-8.7%, n = 3) and inter-day (7.6-17.8%, n = 15) analyses. Fe₃O₄@G-TEOS-MTMOS showed high adsorption capacity (54.4-76.3 mg g^-1) for the selected OPPs. No pesticide residues were detected in the water samples analysed. Excellent extraction recoveries (83-105%) were obtained for the spiked OPPs from tap, river, lake and sea water samples. The newly synthesised Fe₃O₄@G-TEOS-MTMOS showed high potential as adsorbent for OPPs analysis.
