Abstract
In this study, a developed chromatographic stationary phase combines the high selectivity of mixed-mode retention with a temperature-responsive property to boost separation efficiency. Copolymer brushes were grafted onto silica gels through surface initiated-atom transfer radical polymerization by polymerizing two types of monomer, temperature-responsive vinylcaprolactam (VCl) and quinine (Qun) containing benzopyridine, a tertiary ammonium positive center, and hydroxyl groups. The obtained silica@poly(Qun-co-VCl) stationary phases were packed as a chromatographic column, and the retention behavior of hydrophobic polycyclic aromatics, highly polar nucleosides, charged organic acids and β-agonists was studied for this column under different separation modes. The ability to separate different types of analyte shows that the silica@poly(Qun-co-VCl) column provides multiple hydrophobic, hydrophilic and electrostatic interactions toward analytes, achieving the separation of various compounds in one column. In addition, temperature-dependent resolution of polycyclic aromatics, nucleosides, organic acids and β-agonists was investigated using modulation of the column temperature, and the column exhibited adjustable separation selectivity by simply changing the column temperature. These results demonstrate that the grafting of copolymer brushes on a silica surface, consisting of temperature-responsive poly-VCl and multifunctional groups of poly-Qun, is useful as a mixed-mode chromatographic stationary phase for thermally-modulated multiple interactions. Additionally, this column was also used for the quantitative detection of uridine and inosine from cordyceps.

Abstract
Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) today is a well-known and largely applied technique to analyse polar compounds such as pharmaceuticals, metabolites, proteins, peptides, amino acids, oligonucleotides, and carbohydrates. Due to the large number of stationary phases employed for HILIC applications, this review aims to help the reader in choosing a proper stationary phase, which often represents the critical point for the success of a separation. A great offer is present for achiral applications in contrast to the chiral phases developed for HILIC enantioseparations. In the last case, up-to-date solutions are presented.

Abstract
Highly efficient columns are necessary for the modern analytical applications of liquid chromatography. In this work, the separation efficiency of ion-exchange capacity gradient stationary phases combined with eluent concentration gradient was studied by a theoretical approach. In the course of our work three different scenarios of capacity gradients were used with different shapes (linear, convex and concave). The resolutions of different gradient columns were calculated for each scenario. As a reference, a uniform column was considered, which had the same analysis time as the non-uniform column. In the case of separation of ions with same charges, the gradient column offered only a marginal advantage compared to the uniform column due to the bandwidth compression caused by the capacity gradient. In the case of ions with different charges, however, the advantage of the gradient column was more significant. This was mainly due to the increased retention time difference of solutes. Ion-exchange capacity gradient columns may be a new way to separate ions more efficiently.

Abstract
Various polar stationary phases have become available for hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) and help drive continuous applications in biomedical, environmental and pharmaceutical areas in the past decade. Although the stationary phases for HILIC have been reviewed previously, it is an appropriate time to take another look at the progresses during the past five years. The current review provides an overview of the polar stationary phases commercially available for HILIC applications in an effort to assist scientists in selecting suitable columns. New types of stationary phase that were published in literature in the past five years are summarized and discussed. The trend in stationary phase research and development is also highlighted. Of particular interest is the experimental evidence for direct interactions of polar analytes with the ligands of the stationary phases under HILIC conditions. In addition, two different approaches have been developed to delineate the relative significance of the partitioning and adsorption mechanisms in HILIC, representing an important advancement in our understanding of the retention mechanisms in HILIC.

Abstract
A strategy is proposed to develop a stationary phase for hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) using the synergistic effect of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and copolymer brushes. Octahedral octa-aminopropylsisesquioxane (8NH2-POSS) was first bound to silica gel, followed by bromination to form a cubic initiator. Then, using acrylamide (AM) and dihydroxypropyl methacrylate (DPMA) as mixed monomers, surface initiated-atom transfer radical polymerization was conducted to prepare a stationary phase comprising cubic copolymer brushes with amide and diol groups. The characterization of the stationary phase confirmed the successful synthesis of Sil-NH2-POSS/Poly(AM-co-DPMA). The chromatographic properties were investigated using nucleosides, organic acids and β-agonists to find that our designed column has superior hydrophilic property, better separation performance compared with classical HILIC columns consisting of diol- or amino-modified silica. The systematic investigation of the retention mechanism and separation selectivity using various types of polar compounds revealed that Sil-NH2-POSS/Poly(AM-co-DPMA) follows a mixed-mode retention composed of HILIC and electrostatic interactions. Besides, it exhibits good column efficiency and stability. The role of 8NH2-POSS in the separation was evaluated by comparing the performance of Sil-NH2-POSS/Poly(AM-co-DPMA) and poly(AM-co-DPMA)-modified silica without 8NH2-POSS. In conclusion, our designed based on POSS and hydrophilic copolymer brushes can contribute to the development of HILIC separation materials with enhanced performance.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have showed expected potential in chromatographic separation due to unique structure and excellent performance. Nowadays, COF materials applied as chromatographic stationary phases is still in its infancy. Here, we modified COF materials on silica using benzene-1,4,5-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PMDA) and 1,3,5-tris-(4-aminophenyl)triazine (TAPT) monomers by one-pot synthetic method for performing mixed-mode function, named as SiO2@COF. Five characterization methods including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), elemental analysis (EA) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) verified the morphology, structure characteristics and physicochemical properties of the materials. SiO2@COF for performing the separation of polar and nonpolar analytes on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) achieved the desired results. Retention mechanisms of the constructed SiO2@COF were researched via observing the effects of mobile phase with retention times. Results exhibited that the prepared stationary phase can provide various interaction modes, including hydrophobic, hydrophilic, hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. In conclusion, the prepared SiO2@COF stationary phase can execute mixed-mode separation abilities and show potential for complex samples analysis.

Abstract
In this paper, a cysteine-functionalized zwitterionic stationary phase (Cys-silica) was prepared based on the "thiol-ene" click chemistry between cysteine and vinyl-functionalized silica, and was further modified with bromoethane, 1-bromooctane and 1-bromooctadecane, respectively, to obtain a series of quaternary ammoniation-functionalized stationary phases (Cys-silica-Cn, n = 2, 8 and 18). These zwitterionic stationary phases were regarded as reversed-phase/ion-exchange (RP/IEC) mixed-mode chromatography (MMC) stationary phases for protein separation. The retention behaviors of proteins on these zwitterionic stationary phases were carefully investigated. The results indicated that the retentions of acidic and basic proteins on these zwitterinonic stationary phases were significantly influenced by the acetonitrile and salt concentrations, pH of mobile phase as well as the hydrophobicity of the ligand. The separation selectivity of proteins on these zwitterionic stationary phases strongly depended on the pH value of mobile phase. The baseline separation of 6 kinds of basic proteins can be achieved at pH 8.0 using Cys-silica-C2 or Cys-silica-C8 column, and 5 kinds of acidic proteins can also be separated completely at pH 4.0 with Cys-silica-C2 column. Moreover, owing to the quaternary ammoniation-functionalization on Cys-silica by using appropriately hydrophobic bromoalkanes, the selectivity and separation efficiency of proteins can be enhanced greatly. As a result, the acidic and basic proteins can be separated completely step by step from the complex sample by adjusting pH of mobile phase using a single Cys-silica-C2 column, which illustrates that the cysteine-functionalized zwitterionic stationary phase has a great potential for protein separation.

Abstract
Three series of resins with different functional groups (PS-EA, PS-MP, and PS-BA) based on D101 copolymer were prepared via the atom transfer radical polymerization method. The adsorption capacities of functionalized resins toward matrine (MT) and oxymatrine (OM) depended on the specific surface area, the surface chemistry, and the good polarity match between the target compound and porous material. It is noted that the accumulation of functional groups uploaded on the surface of resins increased the adsorption affinity difference between the MT-functionalized resin system and OM-modified copolymer system. The selectivity of modified resins to MT and OM would attribute to polarity matching. The results could provide a possible strategy for the design of efficient adsorbents applied for the isolation the bioactive compound from complex natural products.

Abstract
Stationary phases with mixed-mode mechanisms have emerged as a hot research topic. In the present research, monodisperse core-shell UiO-67@SiO2 materials were prepared and further served as the packed column for mixed-mode hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography/reversed-phase liquid chromatography. The developed UiO-67@SiO2 materials were characterized via thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray Powder diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared techniques. The developed UiO-67@SiO2 column shows flexible selectivity for separation of both hydrophobic (anilines, alkylbenzenes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and hydrophilic (thioureas) compounds. Furthermore, the UiO-67@SiO2 column was also utilized to characterize potential pollutants in lake water samples. In summary, the UiO-67@SiO2 column provided flexible selectivity and wide-range retention behaviors for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic analytes.

Abstract
Mixed-mode phases have become very popular in the last decade, and the number of new mixed/multi-mode sorbents is growing fast. Unlike single-mode stationary phases, perfectly suited for the separation of the analytes possessing similar physicochemical properties, for instance reversed-phase chromatography for hydrophobic solutes, mixed-mode sorbents providing multimodal interactions can render better separation selectivity for complex mixtures of solutes differing significantly in their physicochemical characteristics. The most frequent modern mixed-mode stationary phases are di/tri-mode sorbents embracing the following interactions, hydrophobic, electrostatic (coulombic), and hydrophilic. According to their structures, it is possible to distinguish silica-based, polymer-based, hybrid, and monolithic mixed-mode stationary phases. Herewith, newly synthesized mixed-mode sorbents developed within the last two and half years are categorized, discussed, and summarized. The main attention is devoted to the description of the synthetic routes and characterization methods applied for the new stationary phases.
