Preparation of a reversed-phase/anion-exchange mixed-mode spherical sorbent by Pickering emulsion polymerization for highly selective solid-phase extraction of acidic pharmaceuticals from wastewater

The Effect of the Synthesis Method on Physicochemical Properties of Selective Granular Polymer Sorbents

Investigation of the effect of the polymer synthesis method on physicochemical properties of sorbents is one of the topical problems in the chemistry of macromolecular compounds that has high scientific and practical interest. Determination of the optimal synthesis method will make it possible to create sorbents with physicochemical properties that led to the realization of effective sorption. In this work, we investigated the effect of synthesis methods (Pickering emulsion polymerization and precipitation polymerization in solution) of granular polymers based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate on physicochemical and sorption properties. The synthesis by Pickering emulsion polymerization led to improvement of the n-propyl alcohol diffusion into the polymer network and to the formation of more homogeneous and structurally stable polymer networks. Creating selective polymer networks by Pickering emulsion polymerization compared to precipitation polymerization in solution led to an increase in porosity, creation of more segregated surface of granules, improvement of binding sites availability at the temperature of 37 °C, and formation of the homogeneous sorption surface with high affinity to target molecules at 25 °C and 37 °C. Selective polymers synthesized by both polymerization methods had the largest values of available sorption surfaces areas for target molecules at 37 °C.

Probing the Interactions between Pickering Emulsion Droplets Stabilized with pH-Responsive Nanoparticles

The presence and adsorption of particles at the oil/water interface play a critical role in stabilizing Pickering emulsions and affecting their bulk behavior. For water-in-oil (W/O) and oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions with pH-responsive nanoparticles, their interaction forces and stabilization mechanisms at the nanoscale have not been reported. Herein, the Pickering emulsions formed by oil/water mixtures under different pH values with bilayer oleic acid-coated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@2OA NPs) were characterized using microscopy imaging and zeta potential and interfacial tension (IFT) measurements. The interaction forces between formed emulsion droplets were quantified using an atomic force microscope (AFM) drop probe technique. A W/O emulsion formed at pH 2 and 4 is mainly stabilized by the steric barrier formation of confined particle layers (with Fe₃O₄@2OA NPs and aggregates). At pH 9 and 11, an O/W emulsion is formed, and its stabilization mechanism is mainly due to relatively low IFT, strong electrostatic repulsion due to carboxyl groups, and steric repulsion from confined nanoparticles and aggregates, leading to a stable confined thin water film. Increasing the maximum loading force and dwelling time enhances the confinement of Fe₃O₄@2OA particles and aggregates at the oil/water interface. This work provides useful insights into the interaction and stabilization mechanisms of Pickering emulsions with stimuli-responsive interface-active particles.

Facile Synthesis of Mixed-Mode Weak Anion-Exchange Microspheres via One-Step Pickering Emulsion Polymerization for Efficient Simultaneous Extraction of Strongly and Weakly Acidic Drugs from Reservoir Water

Poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-divinylbenzene) (poly(DEAEMA-co-DVB)) microspheres with mixed-mode weak anion-exchange (WAX) character were successfully fabricated for the first time via facile one-step Pickering emulsion polymerization. The obtained poly(DEAEMA-co-DVB) particles had good spherical geometry, uniform particle size in the range of 30-40 µm, a large specific surface area of 575 m²/g, and a pore size range of 5-30 nm, according to the SEM and nitrogen adsorption-desorption results. Using these mixed-mode WAX microspheres as packing material, a reliable and robust analytical method based on solid phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (SPE-HPLC-UV) was developed for simultaneous determination of six strongly and weakly acidic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, niflumic acid, diflunisal, naproxen, ketoprofen, mefenamic acid, and diclofenac) in reservoir water. Under optimized conditions, it was applicable to preconcentrate up to 500 mL of reservoir water samples on the WAX cartridges with satisfying recoveries (88-96%) for all the NSAIDs tested. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.002-0.025 μg L^-1, respectively. Our results showed that the developed mixed-mode WAX poly(DEAEMA-co-DVB) phase containing a tertiary amine with a pKa value of approximately 10.7 could be used for simultaneous clean-up and preconcentration of strongly and weakly acidic organic pollutants in real environmental water, which could not be achieved by single use of quaternary ammonium strong anion-exchange phase or weaker primary and secondary amine anion-exchange.

Recent advances in mixed-mode chromatographic stationary phases

Mixed-mode phases have become very popular in the last decade, and the number of new mixed/multi-mode sorbents is growing fast. Unlike single-mode stationary phases, perfectly suited for the separation of the analytes possessing similar physicochemical properties, for instance reversed-phase chromatography for hydrophobic solutes, mixed-mode sorbents providing multimodal interactions can render better separation selectivity for complex mixtures of solutes differing significantly in their physicochemical characteristics. The most frequent modern mixed-mode stationary phases are di/tri-mode sorbents embracing the following interactions, hydrophobic, electrostatic (coulombic), and hydrophilic. According to their structures, it is possible to distinguish silica-based, polymer-based, hybrid, and monolithic mixed-mode stationary phases. Herewith, newly synthesized mixed-mode sorbents developed within the last two and half years are categorized, discussed, and summarized. The main attention is devoted to the description of the synthetic routes and characterization methods applied for the new stationary phases.
