Abstract
Nitrites are ubiquitous in food and pose a serious threat to human health. Therefore, the rapid and accurate determination of nitrite ion concentration in food is a prerequisite for eliminating the damage of nitrites. In this study, a robust, rapid, and sensitive method is proposed for nitrite detection in pickled food, in which Au@Ag nanoparticles are used as a reliable surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate taking advantage of the high enhancement effect of silver and the good stability of gold. Nitrites were anchored to the surface of the SERS substrate by bridging with 4-aminophenylthiophenol (PATP). With Raman scattering cross-section amplification and internal calibration by PATP, a satisfactory linear relationship (R2 = 0.987) was established for nitrite detection in the concentration range of 5.00-100.00 μM, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.17 μM. This SERS-based method demonstrated high selectivity, good precision (RSD < 7.00 %), and satisfying recovery rates (101.42-107.35 %) in real samples, thus improving the determination method for nitrites. Therefore, this method has application potential in food safety and supervision.

Abstract
A microfluidic concentration gradient colorimetric detection system consisting of a microfluidic concentration gradient colorimetric detection chip, a self-built colorimetric signal acquisition box and a self-written smartphone APP was constructed for the rapid, in-field and visual quantitative detection of nitrite. Specifically, nitrite with initial concentration of C0 can be automatically diluted into 8 concentration gradients characterized by arithmetic series, and the concentrations are 0, 0.20 C0, 0.33 C0, 0.46 C0, 0.59 C0, 0.72 C0, 0.86 C0 and C0. The colorimetric signal acquisition box avoided the interference of light spots on data acquisition. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the quantitative detection of nitrite was achieved by the proposed two-step colorimetric method based on the inhibition of AuNPs signal amplification, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.14 mg/L. The microfluidic concentration gradient colorimetric detection system was able to detect nitrite as low as 0.43 mg/L and showed a good specificity. The practical application was investigated by analyzing 10 actual samples of river and lake water, pure water and tap water. The recoveries of the microfluidic concentration gradient colorimetric detection system ranged from 94.92% to 105.60%, which indicates that the method had a good application prospect in the detection of practical samples.

Abstract
We propose a feature color extraction method that improves the accuracy of water quality analysis using a digital image and eliminates the effect of interfering ions and chromogenic agents on the color after a color reaction. The proposed method is based on color deconvolution (CD) combined with machine learning for substance measurement in water. After an ordinary camera acquires the solution image after color reaction, the CD algorithm is applied to extract the feature image, calculate the first-order, second-order, and third-order color moments corresponding to RGB channels, and construct a gradient boosting regression tree prediction model based on color moment features to detect substances in water. In predicting ammonia, nitrite, and orthophosphate concentrations, the mean square error values were 0.01029, 0.00063, and 0.1361, and the mean absolute error values were 0.08103, 0.02231, and 0.32886, respectively. There was no significant difference in the results of the comparative spectrophotometric method on the actual water samples. The spiked recoveries of the samples ranged from 94% to 120%, confirming that the method can effectively measure the content of substances in water.

Abstract
The detection of nitrite is of great significance because it is closely related to food safety. In this work, a rapid colorimetric method was developed for nitrite detection based on the reaction of propylene glycol alginate (PGA) gel interface. In the reaction of nitrite and 4-Aminoacetophenone, diazo compound formed, which could be further transformed to purplish red compound by reacting with N-(1-Naphthyl)ethylenediamine (NED). Nitrite exhibited a linear relationship with the grayscale of the gel interface in the range of 0.3-9 μg mL-1 with a detection limit of 0.3 μg mL-1. The method was applied to detect nitrite in four types of pickled vegetables with recovery of 80.9-119.02% and relative standard deviation of 0.11-6.73%. Notably, the detection process can be accomplished within 5 min. The proposed colorimetric method exhibited advantages of simplicity, quickness and sensitivity, showing potential application prospects for the real-time and on-site detection of nitrite in pickled vegetables.

Abstract
An electrochemical sensor based on stearyl trimethyl ammonium bromide - functionalized niobium carbide@multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Nb2C@MWCNTs-STAB) for signal amplification was successfully constructed for sensitive detection of nitrite (NO2-). Niobium carbide@multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Nb2C@MWCNTs) with high electrical conductivity and water dispersibility were first prepared in a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis, after which cationic STAB was added to overcome the negative surface charge on the Nb2C@MWCNTs. The electrostatic attraction between Nb2C@MWCNTs-STAB and NO2- was improved by the STAB, which enhanced the sensitivity of the constructed sensor for NO2-. Under optimized conditions, Nb2C@MWCNTs-STAB/GCE exhibited excellent analytical performance for detection NO2- with two wide liner ranges (0.1-100 μmol L-1 and 100-2000 μmol L-1) and a limit of detection of 0.022 μmol L-1. Nitrite recovery tests in milk and spinach samples showed recoveries in the range of 89.82-104.52%. The NO2- residues in ham and pickled vegetable (cedrela sinensis) samples were analysed using the presented sensor and a spectrophotometric method, with no significant difference found between the results of the two methods.

Abstract
A new eco-friendly, rapid, and sensitive spectrophotometric method was developed to determine small quantities of nitrite, based on a diazotization mechanism. In an acidic solution, sulfathiazole was first diazotized with sodium nitrite, followed by adding phosphate buffer to form a yellow-colored compound, which showed maximum absorption at 450 nm, without the need for the addition of coupling agents such as N-(1-naphthyl) ethylenediamine. The effects of reagents amount and the optimal experimental conditions were examined by Central composite design. The simplified method presented a wide linear range of nitrite between 0.091 μg mL-1 and 1.47 μg mL-1, a sensitivity of 0.447 Abs mL µg-1, a determination coefficient of 0.998, and a low limit of detection of 0.053 μg mL-1. The simplified method was found to be comparable to the Griess method. It was evaluated for the measurements of nitrite using the accuracy profile approach. The validation procedure results established that 80% of the future results would be within the acceptability limit of 10% over the validation domain ranging from 0.174 μg mL-1 to 1.37 μg mL-1. The developed method was furtherly applied in the determination of nitrite using a developed paper-based analytical device that detected a nitrite concentration of 3 μg mL-1 which is considered by the World Health Organization to be the maximal permissible limit of nitrite in drinking water.

Abstract
Traditional Tibetan medicines elaborately document the health benefits of Saxifraga sinomontana. However, there have been limited reports on its chemical make-up, presumably because of the complicated separation and purification process. In this work, a methanolic extract of Saxifraga sinomontana was utilized for targeted separation of 4 key 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl inhibitors employing the medium-pressure liquid chromatography, reversed-phase liquid chromatography in combination with on-line reversed-phase liquid chromatography-1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl detection. Pre-treatment of the sample was carried out by employing medium-pressure liquid chromatography using MCI GEL® CHP20P as the stationary phase, furnishing 2.4 g of fraction Fr3 and 3.4 g of fraction Fr4 (the percentage retrieval was 32.7%). The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl inhibitors contained in fractions Fr3 and Fr4 were subjected to additional separation using a C18 (ReproSil-Pur C18 AQ) column and yielded 106.2 mg of Fr3-1, 246.9 mg of Fr3-2, 248.5 mg of Fr4-1 and 41.8 mg of Fr4-2. The degree of purity, structures and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl inhibition activity of the isolated DPPH inhibitors were determined, and four 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl inhibitors including two new diarylnonanoids (3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenol-(6'-O-galloyl)-1-O-β-d-glucopyrano side with IC50 of 39.6 μM, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl-(6'-O-galloyl)-1-O-β-d-glucopyranoside with IC50 of 46.9 μM, saximonsin A with IC50 of 11.4 μM, and saximonsin B with IC50 of 20.6 μM) were isolated with a percentage purity above 95%. The methodology thus evolved has good efficacy for preparatively isolating high-purity 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl inhibitors from extracts of Saxifraga sinomontana and could be efficiently utilized for rapidly isolating 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl inhibitors from other natural products.

Abstract
Nitrite is widespread in the environment, and is frequently used as an additive to extend the shelf life of meat products. However, the excess intake of nitrite can be harmful to human health. Hence, it is very important to know and control the content of nitrite in foodstuffs. In this work, by the means of self-assembly induced by solvent evaporation, we used the amphiphilic PEO-b-PS diblock copolymers resol and cobalt nitrate as a template to synthesize ordered mesoporous CoOx/C nanocomposites. Then, the CoOx/C nanocomposites were modified on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), which showed excellent sensitivity, good selectivity, and a wide detection range for nitrite. Through cyclic voltammetry and current–time techniques, the electrochemical performance of the GCE modified with CoOx/C nanocomposites was analyzed. Under the optimized conditions, we found that anodic currents were linearly related to nitrite concentrations with a regression equation of lp (µA) = 0.36388 + 0.01616C (R2 = 0.9987) from 0.2 µM to 2500 µM, and the detection limit was 0.05 µM. Furthermore, the electrochemical sensor behaved with high reproducibility and anti-interference ability towards various organic and inorganic ions, such as NO3−, SO42−, Cl−, COOH− (Ac−), Na+, K+, Mg2+, and NH4+. Our results indicated that these CoOx/C nanocomposites could be applied in electrochemical sensors for the rapid and sensitive detection of the food preservative nitrite.

Abstract
A new chemical vapor generation method coupled with headspace solid-phase microextraction miniaturized point discharge optical emission spectrometry (HS-SPME-μPD-OES) for the sensitive and matrix effect-free detection of nitrite in complex samples is described. In an acidic medium, the volatile cyclohexene was generated from cyclamate in the presence of nitrite, which was volatilized to the headspace of the container, efficiently separated, and preconcentrated by HS-SPME. Consequently, the SPME fiber was transferred to a laboratory-constructed thermal desorption chamber wherein the cyclohexene was thermally desorbed and swept into μPD-OES for its sensitive quantification via monitoring the carbon atomic emission line at 193.0 nm. As a result, the quantification of nitrite was accomplished through the determination of cyclohexene. The application of HS-SPME as a sampling technique not only simplifies the experimental setup of μPD-OES but it also preconcentrates and separates cyclohexene from N2 and sample matrices, thus eliminating the interference from water vapor and N2 and significantly improving the analytical performance on the determination of nitrite. Under the optimum experimental conditions, a limit of detection of 0.1 μg L-1 was obtained, which is much better than that obtained by conventional methods. The precision, expressed as relative standard deviation, was better than 3.0% at a concentration of 10 μg L-1. The proposed method provides several advantages of portability, simplicity, high sensitivity, and low energy consumption and eliminates expensive instruments and matrix interference, thus retaining a promising potential for the rapid, sensitive, and field analysis of nitrite in various samples.

Abstract
It is still difficult to directly detect low content of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in water samples by gas chromatography (GC) because when water is the only solvent, it would result in the instability and poor repeatability of peak retention time and peak shape. The adverse effects of water on direct GC analysis of VOCs cannot be significantly reduced or eliminated by simply changing the detection condition of GC. However, it was found that the addition of methanol in samples to a certain final proportion, such as 50 or 75% (v/v), could greatly reduce or eliminate the adverse effects of water. By using 75% (v/v) methanol as a solvent, the standard curves of ethanol, acetic acid, acetone, and isopropanol with correlation coefficient (R 2) over 0.99 were successfully plotted by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) in a certain concentration range, respectively. The results showed that the retention time and peak shape stability of ethanol, acetic acid, acetone, and isopropanol in aqueous solution were greatly improved by the addition of methanol to final concertation of 75% (v/v). To verify the practical application potential of this method, the method was applied to the detection of components in isopropanol fermentation wastewater. The results showed that the method has well applicability and reliability. The key points in the application of this method were also summarized. This GC analysis method would have a wider and better application prospect in the detection of water-soluble organic matters.

Abstract
Excess levels of nitrite ion in drinking water interact with amine functionalized compounds to form carcinogenic nitrosamines, which cause stomach cancer. Thus, it is indispensable to develop a simple protocol to detect nitrite. In this paper, a Cu-metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) with graphene oxide (GO) composite was synthesized by ultrasonication followed by solvothermal method and then fabricated on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode for the sensitive and selective determination of nitrite contamination. The SEM image of the synthesized Cu-MOF showed colloidosome-like structure with an average size of 8 μm. Interestingly, the Cu-MOF-GO composite synthesized by ultrasonic irradiation followed by solvothermal process produce controlled size of 3 μm colloidosome-like structure. This was attributed to the formation of an exfoliated sheet-like structure of GO by ultrasonication in addition to the obvious influence of GO providing the oxygen functional groups as a nucleation node for size-controlled growth. On the other hand, the composite prepared without ultrasonication exhibited 6.6 μm size agglomerated colloidosome-like structures, indicating the crucial role of ultrasonication for the formation of size-controlled composites. XPS results confirmed the presence of Cu(II) in the as-synthesized Cu-MOF-GO based on the binding energies at 935.5 eV for Cu 2p3/2 and 955.4 eV for Cu 2p1/2. The electrochemical impedance studies in [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- redox couple at the composite fabricated electrode exhibited more facile electron transfer than that with Cu-MOF and GO modified electrodes, which helped to utilize Cu-MOF-GO for trace level determination of nitrite in environmental effluent samples. The Cu-MOF-GO fabricated electrode offered a superior sensitive platform for nitrite determination than the Cu-MOF and GO modified electrodes demonstrating oxidation at less positive potential with enhanced oxidation current. The present sensor detects nitrite in the concentration range of 1 × 10-8 to 1 × 10-4 M with the lowest limit of detection (LOD) of 1.47 nM (S/N = 3). Finally, the present Cu-MOF-GO electrode was successfully exploited for nitrite ion determination in lake and dye contaminated water samples.

Abstract
Sediment is an endogenous pollution source, which often leads water systems to eutrophication due to the release of nutrients, especially phosphorus (P). Calcium nitrate (CN) was dosed to the water systems under different modes to control P release from the sediments in this study. A 63-day static laboratory test was conducted to explore the effects of intermittent dosing and one-time dosing modes of CN on P locking in the sediment and the concentrations of nitrogen (N) and P in waters. Results showed that 89% total phosphorus (TP) in the overlying water and 91% TP in the interstitial water of sediment were reduced in the intermittent dosing reactor, which were 4% and 13% higher than those in the one-time dosing reactor, respectively. Thus, the concentration of TP in the overlying water of the dosing reactors was both below 0.1 mg/L during the whole experiment. Meanwhile, the mean values of oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) in the sediment increased to - 110.7 ± 42.02 mV when CN was added intermittently, which were significantly higher than those of the one-time dosing reactor (- 158.3 ± 44.61 mV) and control reactor (- 320.7 ± 0.05 mV). Compared with one-time dosing mode, the intermittent dosing not only reduced the maximum concentrations of NO2--N from 9.21 to 1.79 mg/L and NO3--N from 92.42 to 27.58 mg/L but also shorten their retention time in the overlying water, which might depress the toxic threats to aquatic animals in water environments. Therefore, the intermittent dosing of CN could not only improve the P locking effect but also minimize the risks to aquatic animals in water environments under the premise of reasonable dosage selected. In a word, this research provided an effective operation mode for locking P with CN in the heavily polluted water bodies, which is also advantageous to avoid toxic threats to aquatic animals in water environment.

Redox-derivatization reaction-based rapid and sensitive determination of nitrite using resonance Rayleigh scattering method. Anal Bioanal Chem 2020; 412:1087-1096. Abstract
It remains a problem for direct detection of small inorganic nitrite ions using resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) method based on the direct dye-binding reaction. In the present study, a redox-derivatization reaction taking only 5 min was introduced prior to nitrite detection. In the redox-derivatization reaction, nitrite ions were reduced by excess iodine ions to generate triiodide ions (I3-), which were further derivatized with a cationic dye (basic violet 1, BV1) to form the ion associates of I3--BV1. Therefore, the RRS signal was significantly enhanced, resulting from the increase of particle size and resonance-enhanced scattering effect. The analytical procedure was performed by just mixing nitrite, oxidant, acid, and dye all-in-one, avoiding the tediousness of a multi-step process or the preparation of nanoparticles. The whole detection process including the redox-derivatization reaction was less than 6 min. The reaction conditions such as concentration of hydrochloric acid, potassium iodide, and BV1, reaction time, and temperature were investigated. Under optimum conditions, the concentration of nitrite was linear with an RRS signal of I3--BV1 ion associates at 320 nm in the range of 0.015-1.2 mg/L. The limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 3.0 μg/L. The RRS method was applied to the determination of nitrite in real samples such as pork sausage, milk powder, and water with recovery of 95.2-112%. With advantages of rapidness, high sensitivity, and high selectivity, the method indicates potential applicability for detection of nitrite in complex samples. The method also provides an instructive protocol for detection of analytes that generate no/weak RRS enhancement after the direct dye-binding reaction. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
A fluorometric and colorimetric dual-mode sensing platform based on graphitic carbon nitrite quantum dots (g-CNQDs) and Fe (II)-bathophenanthroline complex (BPS-Fe2+) was designed to the sensitive detection of nitrite (NO2-) in sausage and water. In this system, the fluorescence of g-CNQDs was quenched by BPS-Fe2+ complex due to the inner filter effect (IFE). When NO2- was present, Fe2+ was oxidized by nitrite to form BPS-Fe3+ complex with BPS, leading to the recovery of the fluorescence from g-CNQDs. Therefore, we constructed a "turn-off-on" fluorescence probe for detection of NO2-. Moreover, with the increase of NO2- concentration, the color of the solution changed from red to colorless, so the UV-vis measurements and on-site visual detection were realized. The method is capable of detecting NO2- in the concentration range of 2.32-34.8 μM with good selectivity and high sensitivity. In addition, the method has the potential to determine NO2- in water samples and sausage samples.

Abstract
Detection of nitrite is important for environmental safety and human health, and the development of high-performance sensors for accurate detection of nitrite is highly desirable. Herein, a highly sensitive graphene electrochemical transistor (GECT) nitrite sensor was designed and fabricated for the first time. A single layer of graphene was placed between the source and drain electrodes by the wetting transfer method to act as channel for the transistor. Au nanoparticles modified reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (AuNPs/RGO) were electrodeposited at the transistor gate to improve its catalytic oxidation performance of nitrite with optimized electrodeposition conditions. The sensing principle was attributed to changes in effective gate voltage applied to GECT induced by electrooxidation of nitrite at gate electrodes. Due to the high carrier mobility of graphene in the channel and the excellent electrocatalytical activity of AuNPs/RGO on the gate, the obtained sensor device exhibited an exceedingly low detection limit (0.1 nM nitrite) and ultra-wide linear range from 0.1 nM to 7 μM and from 7 to 1000 μM, which are comparable or superior to the performance of large-scale instruments (e.g. chromatography, spectrophotometry, and spectrofluorimetry etc.). The GECT device also showed good anti-interference performance toward common interfering ions and stable performances. Nitrite in natural lake water has been proven to be monitored by our devices. Therefore, the present novel GECT sensor could act as a desirable practical platform for highly sensitive detection of nitrite in the food and environmental fields.

Abstract
Zwitterionic dispersive magnetic solid phase extraction (ZI-DMSPE) was developed through in situ binding of glycine on the magnetic graphene oxide, electrostatically. This highly selective sorbent was applied for the determination and preconcentration of trace levels of nitrite in soil, sausage, water samples (tap, mineral, and rain), and vegetables (potato, onion, spinach, radish, and lettuce) prior to its determination by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The major advantage of the method is the analyte adsorption in both acidic and basic media. The sorbent was characterized by SEM, XRD, EDS, and FT-IR. Several parameters affecting ZI-DMSPE were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, LOD and RSD were obtained 17 ng L-1 and 1.3% respectively. Preconcentration factor and sorption capacity of the proposed method were 666 and 238 mg g-1 respectively. Accuracy was assessed by comparing results with those obtained by direct determination using ion chromatography and spiked real samples.
