Lab-In-Syringe automation of stirring-assisted room-temperature headspace extraction coupled online to gas chromatography with flame ionization detection for determination of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes in surface waters

Electrothermaly conditioned carbon fibre for the analysis of volatile pollutants

This study deals with the development of an inexpensive and single-step sorbent manufacturing methodology for the analysis of air pollutants. Disposable carbon fibre sorbents were prepared in a few minutes using the electrothermal conditioning technique. The sorbent conditioning current and time were optimised to obtain the best extraction of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) from the air samples. After sorbent characterisation, analysis parameters affecting the BTEX extraction efficiency, such as sampling volume, humidity and sampling flow rate, were optimised for active BTEX sampling. Under optimum conditions, validation parameters such as the limit of detection (LOD), repeatability, reproducibility, and linear range were found to be 0.07-0.11 mg m ^- 3, 1.1%-1.8%, 5.6%-9.5% and 0.24-45 mg m ^- 3, respectively. Thereafter, the BTEX analysis was successfully conducted using the proposed method, with acceptable recovery values (96%-103%) in the real indoor environments.

Lab-in-Syringe, a Useful Technique for the Analysis and Detection of Pollutants of Emerging Concern in Environmental and Food Samples

Lab-in-syringe is a new approach for the integration of various analytical extraction steps inside a syringe. Fully automated dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction is carried out in-syringe using a very simple instrumental setup. Dispersion is achieved by aspiration of the organic phase and then the watery phase into the syringe as rapidly as possible. After aggregation of the solvent droplets, the organic phase is pushed towards the detector allowing a highly sensitive spectrophotometric or fluorimetric detection. This technique is very useful not only for the preconcentration of analyte, but also for the elimination of their interferences. In this work, its application is described using solvents that are lighter and denser than water. The magnetically assisted variant and its coupling to different instruments has been also described with the aim of increasing the resolution of complex samples, especially useful for the determination of emerging contaminants.

Interpenetrated metal-organic frameworks with enhanced photoluminescence for selective recognition of m-xylene from xylene isomers

Two novel luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Zn₃(TCA)₂(BPB)₂]_n (DZU-101, where H₃TCA = 4,4',4''-tricarboxyltriphenylamine and BPB = 1,4-bis(pyrid-4-yl)benzene) and [Zn₃(TCA)₂(BPB)DMA]_n (DZU-102), based on the same ligands and metal ions were synthesized by regulating the amount of water in the solvothermal reaction system. Structural analyses show that the two MOFs have pillar-layered frameworks with Zn₃ clusters connected by the TCA^3- and BPB ligands. Interestingly, DZU-102 possessed a two-fold interpenetrated framework distinct from the individual network of DZU-101. As a result, DZU-102 showed a visual fluorescence color change from chartreuse to azure in m-xylene, while the fluorescence color was turquoise in p-/o-xylene with no change. Furthermore, compared with p/o-xylene, the fluorescence emission peak of DZU-102 in m-xylene suspension produced an obvious blue shift. Moreover, selective fluorescence sensing experiments were also carried out, which demonstrated that the degree of peak shift was related to the concentration of m-xylene, indicating the potential application of DZU-102 in fluorescence sensing of m-xylene from xylene isomers and further revealed the application of structural interpenetration for luminescence tuning of MOFs.

Determination of total protein content in biomedical products by the PDMS-assisted lab-in-a-syringe assay using 3D printed scaffolds removal

The aim of our work was to develop a low-cost, portable device for the fast and easy determination of total protein content by using PDMS-based lab-in-a-syringe technology with removal of 3D-printed channels. We proposed two designs with a one-step PDMS curing and a two-step PDMS-curing fabrication procedure. The one-step PDMS microdevices were found to be the best in the view of preparation, repeatability, and stability of the reagent. This design was then applied for the determination of total protein content in biomedical products using the Bradford assay.

The Automation Technique Lab-In-Syringe: A Practical Guide

About eight years ago, a new automation approach and flow technique called "Lab-In-Syringe" was proposed. It was derived from previous flow techniques, all based on handling reagent and sample solutions in a flow manifold. To date Lab-In-Syringe has evidently gained the interest of researchers in many countries, with new modifications, operation modes, and technical improvements still popping up. It has proven to be a versatile tool for the automation of sample preparation, particularly, liquid-phase microextraction approaches. This article aims to assist newcomers to this technique in system planning and setup by overviewing the different options for configurations, limitations, and feasible operations. This includes syringe orientation, in-syringe stirring modes, in-syringe detection, additional inlets, and addable features. The authors give also a chronological overview of technical milestones and a critical explanation on the potentials and shortcomings of this technique, calculations of characteristics, and tips and tricks on method development. Moreover, a comprehensive overview of the different operation modes of Lab-In-Syringe automated sample pretreatment is given focusing on the technical aspects and challenges of the related operations. We further deal with possibilities on how to fabricate required or useful system components, in particular by 3D printing technology, with over 20 different elements exemplarily shown. Finally, a short discussion on shortcomings and required improvements is given.

On-line coupling of fizzy extraction with gas chromatography

Fizzy extraction (FE) is carried out by first dissolving a carrier gas (typically, carbon dioxide) in a liquid sample at a moderate pressure (typically, 150 kPa) and then rapidly depressurizing the sample. The depressurization leads to instant release of numerous microbubbles in the liquid matrix. The abruptly released gas extracts the volatile solutes and elutes them toward a detector in a short period of time. Here, we describe on-line coupling of FE with gas chromatography (GC). The two platforms are highly compatible and could be combined following several modifications of the interface and adjustments of the extraction sequence. The analytes are released within a short period of time (1.5 s). Thus, the chromatographic peaks are satisfactorily narrow. There is no need to trap the extracted analytes in a loop or on a sorbent, as it is done in standard headspace and microextraction methods. The approach requires only minor sample pretreatment. The main parameters of the FE-GC-mass spectrometry (MS) method were optimized. The results of FE were compared with those of headspace flushing (scavenging headspace vapors), and the enhancement factors were in the order of ~ 2 to 13 (for various analytes). The limits of detection for some of the tested analytes were lower in the proposed FE-GC-MS method than in FE combined with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization MS. The method was further tested in analyses of selected real samples (apple flavor milk, mixed fruit and vegetable juice drink, mango flavored drink, pineapple green tea, toothpaste, and yogurt).
