Hydrothermally tailor-made chitosan fiber for micro-solid phase extraction of petroleum acids in crude oils

Selective Profiling of Carboxylic Acid in Crude Oil by Halogen Labeling Combined with Liquid Chromatography and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Carboxylic acids are a small but essential compound class within petroleum chemistry, influencing crude oil behaviors in production and processing and causing environmental impacts. Detailed structural information is fundamental to understanding their influence on petroleum characteristics. However, characterizing acids in crude oil remains challenging due to matrix effects, structural diversity, and low abundance. In this work, we present a new methodology for profiling carboxylic acids by liquid-liquid extraction and selective derivatization using 4-bromo-N-methylbenzylamine (4-BNMA) followed by liquid chromatography and electrospray ionization Orbitrap mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-Orbitrap MS). The fragmentation of 4-BNMA derivatives produces a unique product ion pair, m/z 169/171, enabling the identification of chromatographic fractions containing carboxylic acids. The mass spectra of the corresponding fractions are extracted, and the acids are further computationally isolated based on the isotopic pattern. The method was optimized and validated using acid standards and systematic experimental designs, assuring robustness and sensitivity for nontarget screening purposes. This method detected up to 380 carboxylic acids in six Danish North Sea crude oils, with up to two carboxyl and other heteroatom functionalities (NSO). The results indicated that the most populated species are fatty acids (double bond equivalent (DBE) = 1) and small aromatic acids (DBE = 2-6). The predominance and diversities of compound classes in different samples are consistent with their corresponding bulk properties. Polyfunctional acids (Ox, NxOx, and SxOx) were observed due to exposure to oxidation and biodegradation. Also, the approach's applicability benefits high-resolution MS analysis by simplifying data processing for crude oil and potentially other high-organic and aqueous samples.

Modified magnetic chitosan materials for heavy metal adsorption: a review

Magnetic chitosan materials have the characteristics of both chitosan and magnetic particle nuclei, showing the characteristics of easy separation and recovery, strong adsorption capacity and high mechanical strength, and have received extensive attention in adsorption, especially in the treatment of heavy metal ions. In order to further improve its performance, many studies have modified magnetic chitosan materials. This review discusses the strategies for the preparation of magnetic chitosan using coprecipitation, crosslinking, and other methods in detail. Besides, this review mainly summarizes the application of modified magnetic chitosan materials in the removal of heavy metal ions in wastewater in recent years. Finally, this review also discusses the adsorption mechanism, and puts forward the prospect of the future development of magnetic chitosan in wastewater treatment.

SnO2–Fe3O4 nanocomposites for the photodegradation of the Congo red dye

Synthesis of SnO₂–Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites was conducted. The purpose of this study was to obtain the SnO₂–Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites, the effectiveness of photodegradation Congo red by SnO₂–Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites and determine the kinetics of photodegradation. The XRD analysis showed that the SnO₂–Fe₃O₄ nanocomposite best mass ratio was 1:1 based on the highest intensity of characteristic angle (2θ), which is 26.54° and had the smallest crystal size, which is 9.662 nm. Based on the UV-Vis DRS result, the SnO₂–Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites bandgap value was 2.3 eV. The magnetization saturation value of SnO₂–Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites was 64.96 emu/g. The morphology of SnO₂–Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites showed by the TEM image, where the dark spots spread in the lighter areas. The surface of SnO₂–Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites characterized by SEM with the result was bumpy surface and many pores. The EDS result of SnO₂–Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites confirmed the presence of Fe, Sn, and O elements. The functional group of SnO₂–Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites showed by FTIR data, the stretch band of Sn–O characteristics showed at wavenumber 590 cm⁻¹, and the stretch band of Fe–O showed at wavenumber 563 cm⁻¹. The optimum condition of nanocomposites at a contact time of 90 min and the optimum concentration of 18 mg/L showed that the percent of photodegradation was 50.76%. The photodegradation rate of SnO₂–Fe₃O₄ was fitted to Pseudo-second-order.

Microextraction and its application for petroleum and crude oil samples

Petroleum is an extremely heterogeneous material. It consists of a wide range of aliphatic, aromatic, and compounds containing heteroatoms such as metals, sulfur, and nitrogen. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) methods are used globally as accepted analytical methods for petroleum, petrochemicals, and fuels. A major drawback of ASTM methods is that they require multistep sample preparation that consumes substantial volumes of samples. Thus, the challenge in the petrochemical analysis is to develop rapid and simpler sample preparation procedures that can be automated. An assessment based on the current literature, specifically on the sample preparation of petroleum samples, leads to the authors' conclusion that microextraction provides an excellent complement to current methods. In this review, solvent and sorbent-based microextraction techniques in the context of the consideration of petroleum and crude oil, and samples related to the petrochemical industry, are discussed.

Preparation of porous aromatic framework modified graphene oxide for pipette-tip solid-phase extraction of theophylline in tea

A new material called as porous aromatic frameworks modified graphene oxide (PAFs-GO) was synthesized, and it was used as an adsorbent in pipette-tip SPE for the effective purification and enrichment of theophylline in tea sample by HPLC. The properties of PAFs-GO were characterized by field emission SEM, FTIR, thermogravimetry analysis and Brunauer Emmett Teller N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis. The results of static adsorption and dynamic adsorption test showed PAFs-GO had higher adsorption ability (93.25 mg/g) than graphene oxide. The LOD and LOQ of the method were 0.0141 and 0.0471 µg/mL, respectively. The acceptable method reproducibility was found as intra- and inter-day precisions, yielding the RSDs <4.62%. By introducing PAFs as support skeleton, the specific surface area of GO was effectively increased, and the penetrability was improved. Studies showed that the proposed method had been successfully applied for purification and enrichment of theophylline in complex tea matrix.
