Comparison of cation-exchange capillary columns used for ion chromatographic separation of biogenic amines

Phthalylglycyl Chloride as a Derivatization Agent for UHPLC-MS/MS Determination of Adrenaline, Dopamine and Octopamine in Urine

Dopamine, adrenaline and octopamine are small polar molecules that play a vital role in regulatory systems. In this paper, phthalylglycyl chloride was proposed as a derivatization agent for octopamine, adrenaline and dopamine determination in urine for the first time. The derivatization procedure facilitated the use of reversed-phase liquid chromatography with positive electrospray ionization-high-resolution mass spectrometry. An LC-HRMS method was developed that provided quantification limits of 5 ng/mL and detection limits of 1.5 ng/mL for all analytes. The 95-97% yield of derivates was observed after a 10 min derivatization with phthalylglycyl chloride at pH 6.5 and 30 °C. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of human urine samples. The obtained results were compared with those of conventional derivatization procedures with 9-fluorenyl-methoxycarbonyl chloride and dansyl chloride.

Sustainable hydrophilic ultrasmall carbonaceous spheres modified by click reaction for high-performance polymeric ion chromatographic stationary phase

Novel poly(ethylvinylbenzene-divinylbenzene) (EVB-DVB) agglomerated with ultrasmall carbonaceous spheres (UCSs) anion-exchange packings for ion chromatography (IC) were constructed. Hydrophilic UCSs with mean sizes of 62-98 nm were synthesized in quantity by the polydiallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride aided hydrothermal carbonization of fructose. The green strategy based on the thiol-ene click reaction with cysteamine in aqueous system was first designed for the hyperbranched polyquaternary amine (HPA) grafting of UCSs with negligible damage on their monodispersity. The HPA modified UCSs were evenly distributed on sulfonated EVB-DVB substrate to form one uniform layer of functional nanospheres without observable coagulum. Seven typical anions (F^-, Cl^-, NO₂^-, Br^-, NO₃^-, SO₄^2- and PO₄^3-) were baseline separated on constructed packing in 5 min with high efficiencies in the range of 44,800-71,100 plates m ^- 1. The rapid separation of polarizable anions, small organic acids and saccharides could be also accomplished under isocratic elution with competitive peak symmetry and efficiency. Good reproducibility was demonstrated by consecutive injection. Thiosulfate in water reducer was further detected on prepared packing in 4 min with detection limit of 0.04 mg L ^- 1 (S/N = 3) and good repeatability.

Mixed-acidic cation-exchange material for the separation of underivatized amino acids

Mixed-acidic cation-exchange (MCX) columns with both strongly (SCX) and weakly (WCX) acidic functional groups were developed for the separation of standard amino acids. The resins were prepared by carboxylation of highly crosslinked monodisperse poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) copolymer particles with performic acid and subsequent sulfonation with sulfuric acid. The degree of functionalization was varied independently for each processing step and controlled by measuring pH dependent retention of the obtained resins. A series of mixed-acidic resins with different SCX/WCX-ratios was chromatographically characterized by variation of formic acid and acetonitrile concentration in the aqueous eluent. The overall cation-exchange capacity was varied from 33 to 68 µmol/mL. The comparison with two commercial columns (Metrohm Metrosep C6, WCX and Hamilton PRP X-200, SCX) revealed the additive character of the different functional group properties within MCX columns and a unique selectivity which can be adjusted by both eluent composition and SCX/WCX-ratio of the resin. The retention window between neutral and basic amino acids was altered by varying the amount of sulfonic acid groups attached to the polymer. Orthogonality plots demonstrated constant selectivity for neutral amino acids. Correlating the retention data with log P data demonstrated the influence of non-ionic hydrophobic and π-π-interactions for the separation of amino acids on PS/DVB-based cation-exchangers. An isocratic IC-ESI-MS method was developed to separate and quantitate 20 underivatized standard amino acids within 30 min. Limits of detection were between 4 and 64 nmol L^-1 and a high linearity of calibration curves was obtained for all analytes. The method was validated by comparing a certified reference standard with external calibration data.

Determination of ammonium and biogenic amines by ion chromatography. A review

The amount and type of chemical compounds found in food products and the environment, which are and should be controlled, is increasing. This is associated with toxicological knowledge, resulting regulations, rapid development of analytical methods and techniques, and sample preparation methods for analysis. These include, among others, ammonia derivatives such as ammonium, and amines, including biogenic amines. Their occurrence in the environment and food is related to their widespread use in many areas of life and their formation as a result of various physical and chemical changes. Analysts use various methods both classical and instrumental to theirs quantify in different matrices such as food, medicinal and environmental samples. Nevertheless, there is still a need for analytical methods with increased matrix-tolerance, selectivity, specificity, and higher sensitivity. While in the determination of ammonium, ion chromatography is a reference method. In the case of biogenic amines, its use for these purposes is not yet so common. However, given ion chromatography its advantages and rapid development, its importance can be expected to increase in the near future, especially at the expense of gas chromatography methods. This paper is a summary of the advantages and limitations of ion chromatography in this important analytical field and a literature review of the past 15 years.

Degradation of prometryn in Ruditapes philippinarum using ozonation: Influencing factors, degradation mechanism, pathway and toxicity assessment

In recent years, prometryn was utilized as watergrass remover in the aquaculture industry, resulting in the accumulated residual in the aquatic products. The present study focuses on the ozone degradation of prometryn in the Ruditapes philippinarum. The ozone concentration in water increased along with the injection time (60min). The contents of hydroxyl (·OH) and superoxide (O2·^-) radicals increased along with the ozone injection time. The effects of temperature, pH, prometryn initial concentration and ozone concentration on the removal efficiency of prometryn were evaluated. The maximum removal efficiency of 86.12% was obtained under the conditions of pH 7, prometryn initial concentration 0.05 mg/kg and the ozone concentration 4.2 mg/L at 28 °C for 30 min. Ion chromatography (IC) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy results show that the S and N atoms in the outer layer of the triazine ring during the prometryn degradation process were oxidized and removed. A total of 30 intermediate compounds were identified using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method. Combined with the IC and FT-IR results, three possible degradation pathways of prometryn were proposed. The prometryn was finally degraded into some small molecules with reduced toxicity by 63.16% for 120 min ozonization treatment. Overall, our work provides a novel approach for prometryn degradation in Ruditapes philippinarum, which can be extended for removing the residues of agricultural and veterinary drugs in other aquatic products.

Analytical strategies for the determination of amino acids: Past, present and future trends

This review describes the analytical methods that have been developed over the years to tackle the high polarity and non-chromophoric nature of amino acids (AAs). First, the historical methods are briefly presented, with a strong focus on the use of derivatization reagents to make AAs detectable with spectroscopic techniques (ultraviolet and fluorescence) and/or sufficiently retained in reversed phase liquid chromatography. Then, an overview of the current analytical strategies for achiral separation of AAs is provided, in which mass spectrometry (MS) becomes the most widely used detection mode in combination with innovative liquid chromatography or capillary electrophoresis conditions to detect AAs at very low concentration in complex matrixes. Finally, some future trends of AA analysis are provided in the last section of the review, including the use of supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), multidimensional liquid chromatography and electrophoretic separations, hyphenation of ion exchange chromatography to mass spectrometry, and use of ion mobility spectrometry mass spectrometry (IM-MS). Various application examples will also be presented throughout the review to highlight the benefits and limitations of these different analytical approaches for AAs determination.
