Electrospun nanofiber cloud for ultrafast solid phase micro-extraction of trace organics in water samples

Thin-film solid-phase microextraction of pesticides from cereal samples using electrospun polyvinyl alcohol/modified chitosan/porous organic framework nanofibers

In this study, a coating of electrospun polyvinyl alcohol/modified chitosan/hydroxy-containing porous organic framework (PVA/MCS/HC-POF) was fabricated and applied as a novel sorbent for thin-film solid-phase microextraction of pesticides from cereal samples, followed by HPLC-UV. The successful fabrication of PVA/MCS/HC-POF was confirmed through characterization tests. The functional group of MCS and a large number of hydroxyl groups on the HC-POF structure contributed to the co-extraction of pesticides. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration plots were linear within the range of 5.0-800 ng mL-1 (r2 ≥ 0.978), and the limits of detection were obtained below 4.0 ng mL-1. The method's precision was investigated through intra-day, inter-day, and film-to-film RSD (%) measurements, all of which were less than 6.5 %, 8.2 %, and 10.0 %, respectively. Furthermore, satisfactory recoveries ranging from 63.3 % to 79.0 % were obtained. Accordingly, the proposed method can be considered a suitable alternative for measuring trace amounts of pesticides in cereal samples.

Magnetic polyimide nanocomposite for analysis of parabens in cooking wine by magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with gas chromatography - Mass spectrometry

A magnetic polyimide (PI) nanocomposite has been synthesized by phase inversion of PI and simultaneous encapsulation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The Fe3O4/PI nanocomposite was characterized by a variety of characterization techniques, including infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The results showed that the prepared nanocomposite had a homogeneous structure, adequate specific surface area (76.1 m2/g) and high saturation magnetization (42.9 emu/g). Using parabens as model analytes, the performance of the Fe3O4/PI nanocomposite as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) was evaluated. The extracted parabens were desorbed and determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The parameters affecting the extraction and desorption efficiency of parabens were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the developed MSPE/GC-MS method was successfully applied to the determination of parabens in cooking wine. The MSPE/GC-MS method exhibited broad linearity (0.2-100 µg/L), low detection limits (0.04-0.05 µg/L), and satisfactory extraction recoveries (79.2 %-113.3 %) with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 0.7 % to 10.4 %. For real cooking wine samples, the spiked recoveries ranged from 91.7 % to 118.7 % with RSDs of 1.0 %-11.2 %. The results demonstrated that the Fe3O4/PI nanocomposite was an effective adsorbent, and this work provides a novel reference for the easy preparation of magnetic adsorbent materials.

A Review of the Analysis of Phthalates by Gas Chromatography in Aqueous and Food Matrices

As a commonly well-known industrial chemical, phthalates are produced in high volumes to be used in various consumer products (e.g., plasticizers, medical devices, construction materials, and toys) to enhance softness, durability, transparency, and flexibility. Phthalates are generally not chemically bonded to the polymer chain of the plastic in which they are mixed. Thus, they may leach, migrate, or evaporate into indoor/outdoor air, and foodstuffs. In this review, a comprehensive overview of several sample preparation methods coupled with gas chromatography for the analysis of phthalates in various kinds of complex matrices, with a focus on the last 20 years' worth of papers. The review begins by highlighting the environmental significance of phthalate pollution along with the various routes to their exposure to general population. Then, the discussion is extended to cover the pretreatment and extraction techniques for phthalates for their quantitation based on gas chromatographic approach. Finally, the present and future challenges for the detection of phthalates in aqueous and food matrices are discussed.

Polyaniline-polycaprolactone electrospun nanofibrous mat: new polymeric support with anion exchange characteristic for immobilizing liquid membrane in efficient on-chip electromembrane extraction of polar acidic drugs

The potential of application of an electrospun nanofiber sheet as new polymeric support for immobilizing the liquid membrane, instead of a common commercial polypropylene sheet, in on-chip electromembrane extraction (EME) of some acidic polar drugs followed by HPLC with ultraviolet detection is presented. The nanofiber sheet was prepared by electrospinning a mixture of polycaprolactone and polyaniline. The successful synthesis of the electrospun nanofiber sheet was confirmed by field emission-scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, elemental mapping, and atomic force microscopy. Several parameters affecting the efficiency of the microextraction method, including pHs of the donor and acceptor phases, applied voltage, sample flow rate, phosphate content of the acceptor phase, and sample volume, were investigated and optimized. After optimization, the linearity range of 0.5-250.0 µg L^-1 and detection limits of 0.2-1.0 µg L^-1 were obtained for the analytes. The extraction recovery values and preconcentration factors were 10.7-55.3% and 16-83, respectively. The presence of polyaniline in the composition of the nanofibers significantly improved the extraction efficiency of the polar acidic drugs due to providing the possibility of various interactions with the target analytes such as hydrogen bonding, π-stacking, and anion exchange. The obtained results demonstrate the excellent efficiency of the synthesized electrospun nanofibrous mat as a novel support membrane for immobilizing 1-octanol and as an interactive substrate for electromembrane extraction of acidic polar drugs. Eventually, the proposed on-chip EME method exhibits acceptable precision (relative standard deviations less than 9.7% (n = 3)) and good accuracy (86-112%) for determining the target analytes in the plasma samples.

Porous electrospun microfibers for low flow-resistant solid phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in tap water, egg and milk samples

In this work, porous electrospun microfibers (PEMFs) were prepared using a polyimide/polyvinylpyrrolidone/polyethylene glycol (PI/PVP/PEG) solution mixture with coaxial ultrasonic water vapor spraying. After removing PVP and PEG by ultrasonic water washing, the PEMFs were successfully demonstrated as adsorbents for solid phase extraction (SPE). Most non-porous electrospun nanofibers are hundreds of nanometers in diameter, with a specific surface area of dozens of square meters per gram. In contrast, the diameter of the as-prepared PEMFs was tuned between 3 and 8 μm, the specific surface area was 76 m²g^-1 and the pore size was ca 25 nm. Therefore, the flow resistance of the PEMF-SPE cartridges was similar to those of conventional commercial SPE cartridges, and much lower than those of SPE cartridges packed with electrospun nanofibers. Using the PEMF-SPE cartridges with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector (UPLC-FLD), five fluoroquinolones (FQs) in tap water, egg and milk samples were extracted and quantified successfully. After optimizing the extraction conditions, FQs in water samples were extracted and eluted with high recoveries of 84.8-114.8%. The inter-batch and intra-batch relative standard deviation (RSD) values for the FQs were in the range of 1.9-9.5% (n=3), and the limits of detection were between 0.0024-0.014 μg L^-1. The method was linear in the concentration range of 0.005-10 μg L^-1. The reliability of the developed method was validated by analyzing tap water, egg and milk samples, and the recovery values were found to be in the range of 74.8-116.6% under the optimized conditions.

Metal organic framework assisted in situ complexation for miniaturized solid phase extraction of organic mercury in fish and Dendrobium officinale

Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks, namely Zr-based MOF, was employed as adsorbent material in the miniaturized solid phase extraction of organic mercury compounds in food prior to capillary electrophoresis-diode array detector analysis. The synthesized adsorbent was characterized by different spectroscopic techniques. Parameters influencing the extraction and complexation of methylmercury chloride, ethylmercury chloride and phenylmercury chloride such as type of eluent solvent, type and amount of adsorbent were investigated. In addition, linear ranges contained 2.00-300.00 ng mL^-1 for MeHg⁺, 5.00-500.00 ng mL^-1 for EtHg⁺ and PhHg⁺, and the established method presented good linearity (R² ≥ 0.998). Under the optimized experimental conditions, the ranges of detection limit and quantitation limit were 0.022-0.067 ng mL^-1 and 0.073-0.220 ng mL^-1, respectively. The relative standard deviations of intra- and inter-day analysis were less than 3.2 and 3.1%, respectively. Trueness of the present method was successfully accomplished by means of the recovery assays (81.4-98.5%) in the blank samples with two concentration levels. The repeatability %RSD of the method was lower than 2.7%. Overall, the developed approach proved to have the latent capability to be utilized in routine analysis of organic mercury compounds in fish and Dendrobium officinale.

A miniature stainless steel net dumbbell-shaped stir-bar for the extraction of phthalate esters in instant noodle and rice soup samples

This work reports the development of a very-simple-to-construct stir-bar extraction device so called "a dumbbell-shaped stainless steel stir-bar." The extraction device was assembled from a rolled up stainless steel net filled with an XAD-2 sorbent and a metal rod to allow the use of a magnetic stirrer during extraction. The dumbbell-shaped stainless steel stir-bar was used to extract diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) before analysis by a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector (GD-ECD). Under the optimal conditions, the developed method provided a good linearity from 10.0 to 1,000.0 ng mL^-1 for all three compounds. Limits of detection and limits of quantification were 9.37 ± 0.29 ng mL^-1 and 31.22 ± 0.95 ng mL^-1 for DEP, 5.73 ± 0.31 ng mL^-1 and 19.1 ± 1.0 ng mL^-1 for DBP and 3.30 ± 0.06 ng mL^-1 and 11.0 ± 0.19 ng mL^-1 for DEHP, respectively. Good recoveries in the range of 81.89 ± 0.17 to 109.5 ± 2.0% were achieved when the method was used to extract phthalate esters in five instant noodle and two rice soup samples.
