Hierarchical zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 derived from in-situ synthesized CO-Al layered double hydroxide embedded within porous-anodized aluminum foil for thin film microextraction of caffeine followed by its high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection

Development of a polyurethane-coated thin film solid phase microextraction device for multi-residue monitoring of pesticides in fruit and tea beverages

A novel solid-phase microextraction device coated with an efficient and cheap thin film of polyurethane was developed for trace determination of 13 widely used pesticides in fruit and tea beverages. A round-shaped polyurethane film covering the bottom of a glass vial was fabricated as the sorbent to exhibit a superior capacity for preconcentrating target compounds and reducing matrix interferences. After optimization of the key parameters including the film type, extraction time, solution pH, ionic strength, desorption solvent, and conditions, this device allowed an efficient adsorption-desorption cycle for the pesticides accomplished in one vial. Coupled with gas chromatography-electron capture detection, the polyurethane-coated thin film microextraction method was successfully established and applied for the analysis of real fruit and tea drinks, showing low limits of detection (0.001-0.015 μg/L), wide linear ranges (1.0-500.0 μg/L, r²  > 0.9931), good relative recoveries (77.2%-106.3%) and negligible matrix effects (86.1%-107.5%) for the target pesticides. The proposed approach revealed strong potential of extending its application by flexibly modifying the type or size of the coating film. This study provides insights into the enrichment of contaminants from complex samples using inexpensive and reusable microextraction devices that can limit the environmental and health impact of the sample preparation protocol.

Urea-linked covalent organic framework functionalized polytetrafluoroethylene film for selective and rapid thin film microextraction of rhodamine B

Incorporation of highly selective and stable adsorbent with facile extraction technology is desired in practical analysis. Here we show the rational preparation of a urea-linked covalent organic framework functionalized polytetrafluoroethylene film (COF-117-PTFE) with ordered porous structure, rich functional groups, and large surface area-to-volume ratio as the effective adsorbent for convenient, selective and rapid thin film microextraction (TFME) of rhodamine B (RB). The COF-117-PTFE based TFME coupled with high performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD) successfully realized the determination of RB with the limit of detection of 0.007 μg L^-1, the linear range of 0.1 - 100 μg L^-1. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of intraday (n = 5) and interday (n = 5) for the determination of 10 μg L^-1 RB were 2.3% and 6.8%, respectively. The absolute recoveries were 80.3%, 71.2% and 67.9% in river water, chili powder and Sichuan pepper powder, respectively. The recoveries for RB spiking in complicated real samples (dry chili, chili powder, dry Sichuan pepper, Sichuan pepper powder and river water) ranged from 90.4% to 107.5%. The developed COF-117-PTFE based TFME-HPLC-FLD method is promising in practical application. This work reveals the high potential of functionalized COF film as the adsorbent for effective extraction of trace contaminants in complicated samples.

Combination of polyurethane and polymethyl methacrylate thin films as a microextraction sorbent for rapid adsorption and sensitive determination of neonicotinoid insecticides in fruit juice and tea by ultra high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry

An economical and effective thin film microextraction (TFME) for simultaneous analysis of ten neonicotinoid insecticides and metabolites in fruit juice and tea, was developed based on the combination of polyurethane (PU) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) films as the sorbent followed by ultra high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. The PU/PMMA composite was evidenced to possess rapid adsorption and strong accumulation towards neonicotinoids compared with the films used alone. A series of parameters were optimized, and the agitation mode, film size, ionic strength, desorption solvent and sample pH were found to dominate the microextraction process rather than the extraction temperature, agitation time and sample volume. The thin films are cost effective and efficient for single use analysis, but still can be reused at least 8 times with no significant loss in performance. The ten neonicotinoids were measured with good recoveries (81.1-107.9%), high enrichment factors (up to 135), low limits of detection (0.001-0.1 µg L^-1), and wide linearity range (1-500 µg L^-1, r²>0.9981) in fruit juice (apple, lemon, and pomegranate) and tea (green tea and black tea) samples. The proposed method was successfully applied to commercial fruit and tea drinks, and no samples were tested positive on target neonicotinoids. The PU/PMMA based TFME has shown great potential as an alternative to exhaustive extraction techniques for routine screening of trace neonicotinoids in fruit juice and tea by simplifying the analytical procedure, shortening the operation time, and lowering the material expense.

Recent applications of microextraction sample preparation techniques in biological samples analysis

Analysis of biological samples is affected by interfering substances with chemical properties similar to those of the target analytes, such as drugs. Biological samples such as whole blood, plasma, serum, urine and saliva must be properly processed for separation, purification, enrichment and chemical modification to meet the requirements of the analytical instruments. This causes the sample preparation stage to be of undeniable importance in the analysis of such samples through methods such as microextraction techniques. The scope of this review will cover a comprehensive summary of available literature data on microextraction techniques playing a key role for analytical purposes, methods of their implementation in common biological samples, and finally, the most recent examples of application of microextraction techniques in preconcentration of analytes from urine, blood and saliva samples. The objectives and merits of each microextration technique are carefully described in detail with respect to the nature of the biological samples. This review presents the most recent and innovative work published on microextraction application in common biological samples, mostly focused on original studies reported from 2017 to date. The main sections of this review comprise an introduction to the microextraction techniques supported by recent application studies involving quantitative and qualitative results and summaries of the most significant, recently published applications of microextracion methods in biological samples. This article considers recent applications of several microextraction techniques in the field of sample preparation for biological samples including urine, blood and saliva, with consideration for extraction techniques, sample preparation and instrumental detection systems.

In-situ formation of Zn-Al layered double oxides on electrochemically anodized nanoporous aluminum film as sorbent for chlorophenols extraction from water and wastewater followed by determination using HPLC

Herein, we present a simple, cost-effective, and robust strategy for the in-situ preparation of Zn-Al layered double oxides-anodized aluminum thin film via a facile hydrothermal method, followed by calcination treatment of the Zn-Al layered double hydroxide in the air atmosphere. The in-situ prepared Zn-Al layered double oxide-anodized aluminum film was implemented as sorbent for thin film microextraction of four selected chlorophenols (4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, and pentachlorophenol), followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection. The different variables of the thin film microextraction were screened via Plackett-Burman design and then optimized through Box-Behnken design. Under the optimum condition, the method showed good linear ranges (0.2-200 μg/L) with the coefficient of determinations higher than 0.9938. The calculated limit of detections were between 0.07 and 0.56 μg/L. Relative standard deviations of the method for determination of the analytes at 5 μg/L concentration level (n = 3) were ranged from 3.5 to 3.9% (as interday). The enrichment factors were between 39 and 58. This extraction method was demonstrated to be fast, efficient, and convenient. To study the capability of the developed method for real sample analysis, tap, well, river, and two types of wastewater samples were satisfactorily analyzed.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in analytical sample preparation

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks are a class of metal-organic frameworks that are topologically isomorphic with zeolites. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks are composed of tetrahedrally coordinated metal ions connected by imidazolate linkers and have a high porosity and chemical stability. Here, we summarize the progress made in the application of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks in sample preparation for analytical purposes. This review is focused on analytical methods based on liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, or capillary electrophoresis, where the use of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks has contributed to increasing the sensitivity and selectivity of the method. While bulk zeolitic imidazolate frameworks have been directly used in analytical sample preparation protocols, a variety of strategies for their magnetization or their incorporation into sorbent particles, monoliths, fibers, stir bars, or thin films, have been developed. These modifications have facilitated the handling and application of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks for a number of analytical sample treatments including magnetic solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, or thin film microextraction, among other techniques.
