Abstract
BACKGROUND The development of analytical techniques in the field of liquid chromatography has brought new frontiers in performance and analytical speed for the technique. The proper evaluation of the analytical boundaries achieved with those developments was not addressed in the literature, since different liquid chromatography (LC) techniques have not yet received any classification regarding their chromatographic speed. Defining chromatographic analysis speed based simply on analysis time is an outdated concept since it is sample and analyte-dependent. In this context, the application of the Average Theoretical Peak Time concept (ATPT) is proposed as a unified metric for chromatographic speed classification. RESULTS This metric was evaluated using PCA analysis in a group of more than 50 publications, which generated the classification of LC methods in normal, high, hyper, and ultra-high-speed separations using ATPT. Normal speed (ATPT values greater than 18000 ms/peak) was found in HPLC, nano-LC, SFC, and CEC methods. Therefore, high-speed methods (ATPT values between 4000 and 18000 ms/peak) were found in UHPLC techniques, while LC × LC methods presented higher ATPT values between 1000 and 4000 ms/peak being classified as hyper-speed separations. ATPT can also be used as an optimization parameter, since older methods show higher ATPT values, while recent published papers show lower values of this metric. This behavior is justified due to the improvement of the LC methods over the years. SIGNIFICANCE This work fulfills the gap in chromatographic definitions and metrics, regarding analytical speed in one-dimensional and multidimensional liquid chromatographic techniques and shows that ATPT metrics is a robust parameter that can be used to classify the separation speed as well as a metric to evaluate the LC Method optimization. It also corrects the historical application of separation time as a metric for chromatographic speed.

Recent applications and chiral separation developments based on stationary phases in open tubular capillary electrochromatography (2019–2022). J Pharm Anal 2023; 13:323-339. Abstract
Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) plays a significant role in chiral separation via the double separation principle, partition coefficient difference between the two phases, and electroosmotic flow-driven separation. Given the distinct properties of the inner wall stationary phase (SP), the separation ability of each SP differs from one another. Particularly, it provides large room for promising applications of open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). We divided the OT-CEC SPs developed over the past four years into six types: ionic liquids, nanoparticle materials, microporous materials, biomaterials, non-nanopolymers, and others, to mainly introduce their characteristics in chiral drug separation. There also added a few classic SPs that occurred within ten years as supplements to enrich the features of each SP. Additionally, we discuss their applications in metabolomics, food, cosmetics, environment, and biology as analytes in addition to chiral drugs. OT-CEC plays an increasingly significant role in chiral separation and may promote the development of capillary electrophoresis (CE) combined with other instruments in recent years, such as CE with mass spectrometry (CE/MS) and CE with ultraviolet light detector (CE/UV).

Abstract
In this work, a new open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) column was prepared using β-cyclodextrin covalent organic framework (β-CD COF) as a stationary phase. Polydopamine was used to assist fabrication of β-CD COF on an inner wall of a fused-silica capillary. The coating layer on the capillary was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Electroosmotic flow (EOF) was also studied to evaluate the variation of the inner wall of immobilized columns. Furthermore, the chiral separation effectiveness of the fabricated capillary column was evaluated by CEC using enantiomers of several related proton pump inhibitors as model analytes, including omeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole and tenatoprazole. The effects of bonding time and concentration of β-CD COF, the type, concentration and pH of buffer, applied voltage were investigated to obtain satisfactory enantioselectivity. In the optimum conditions, the enantiomers of four analytes were resolved within 15 min with resolutions of 1.63-2.62. The relative standard deviation values for migration times and resolutions of the analytes representing intraday and interday were less than 6.75% and 4.24%, respectively. The results reveal that β-CD COF has great potential as chiral-stationary phases for enantioseparation in CEC.

Abstract
The degradation of sulfacetamide with the formation of sulfanilamide leads to a deterioration in the quality of pharmaceuticals. In this work, potentiometric sensors for the simultaneous determination of sulfanilamide, sulfacetamide and inorganic ions, and for assessing the degradation of pharmaceuticals were developed. A multisensory approach was used for this purpose. The sensor cross-sensitivity to related analytes was achieved using perfluorosulfonic acid membranes with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) or polyaniline as dopants. The composite membranes were prepared by oxidative polymerization and characterized using FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, and SEM. The influence of the preparation procedure and the dopant concentration on the membrane hydrophilicity, ion-exchange capacity, water uptake, and transport properties was investigated. The characteristics of the potentiometric sensors in aqueous solutions containing sulfanilamide, sulfacetamide and alkali metals ions in a wide pH range were established. The introduction of proton-acceptor groups and π-conjugated moieties into the perfluorosulfonic acid membranes increased the sensor sensitivity to organic analytes. The relative errors of sulfacetamide and sulfanilamide determination in the UV-degraded eye drops were 1.2 to 1.4 and 1.7 to 4%, respectively, at relative standard deviation of 6 to 9%.

Abstract
A mixed-mode capillary column packed with silica-based poly(pentabromostyrene) particles (denoted as SiO2@pPBS) was prepared and applied to capillary electrochromatography (CEC) separation. With the presence of benzene rings and bromine atoms in polymer chains, the SiO2@pPBS column provides a reversed-phase/hydrophilic mixed-mode retention mechanism owing to hydrophilic, hydrophobic and π-π interactions between the stationary phase and various analytes, including alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nucleosides, phenols and anilines. In CEC mode, the separation behavior of charged solutes is not only related to the interaction with the stationary phase, but also influenced by electrophoretic effects, which may lead to different selectivities compared to high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A column efficiency of up to 1.22 × 105 N m-1 was achieved for p-chloroaniline. Besides, the RSDs of retention time of anilines for run to run (n = 5), day to day (n = 5) and column to column (n = 3) were all less than 4.4%. Finally, the SiO2@pPBS capillary column was applied to the separation of coking wastewater with satisfactory results. All the results demonstrated that the SiO2@pPBS capillary packed column with RP/HILIC mixed-mode has great application potential.

Synthesis of a covalent organic framework with hydrazine linkages and its application in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography. J Chromatogr A 2021; 1661:462681. Abstract
Recently, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), owning to their excellent and unique properties, are attracting the attention of numerous researchers in some areas, especially the domain of chromatographic separation. However, the application of hydrazine linkages COFs in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) lies in the early stage at present. Herein, a well-crystallized hydrazine-linked COF (Tf-DHzOH) was synthesized successfully from 2,5-dihydroxyterephtalohydrazide and 1,3,5-triformyl-benzene. Tf-DHzOH was firstly regarded as a stationary phase material to prepare the Tf-DHzOH coated capillaries with different coating thickness by covalent bonding in this work. The characterization results showed that Tf-DHzOH was successfully synthesized. The separation performance and stability of the Tf-DHzOH coated capillary were evaluated by considering amino acids, sulfonamides, tetracyclines and benzene compounds as analytes. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of separation time in the intra-day (n = 9), inter-day (n = 6), column-to-column (n = 3) and batch-to-batch (n = 3) were 0.76-4.97%, 1.59-5.94%1.78-8.72% and 1.66%-8.23%, respectively, the RSDs of peak areas were 1.90-5.16%, 1.73-5.24%, 1.26-7.33% and 3.77%-11.24%, respectively. It was confirmed that there was no visible change of separation efficiency after the Tf-DHzOH-coated capillary was used more than 200 runs. The results make clear that 2D hydrazine-linked COF (Tf-DHzOH) has superior potential as the stationary phase in OT-CEC for chromatographic separation.
