Abstract
Evaporative emissions release organic compounds comparable to gasoline exhaust in China. However, the measurement of intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs) is lacking in studies focusing on gasoline evaporation. This study sampled organics from a real-world refueling procedure and analyzed the organic compounds using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer (GC×GC-MS). The non-target analysis detected and quantified 279 organics containing 93 volatile organic compounds (VOCs, 64.9 ± 7.4 % in mass concentration), 182 IVOCs (34.9 ± 7.4 %), and 4 semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs, 0.2 %). The refueling emission profile was distinct from that of gasoline exhaust. The b-alkanes in the B12 volatility bin are the most abundant IVOC species (1.9 ± 1.4 μg m-3) in refueling. A non-negligible contribution of 17.5 % to the ozone formation potential (OFP) from IVOCs was found. Although IVOCs are less in concentration, secondary organic aerosol potential (SOAP) from IVOCs (58.1 %) even exceeds SOAP from VOCs (41.6 %), mainly from b-alkane in the IVOC range. At the molecular level, the proportion of cyclic compounds in SOAP (12.1 %) indeed goes above its mass concentration (3.1 %), mainly contributed by cyclohexanes and cycloheptanes. As a result, the concentrations and SOAP of cyclic compounds (>50 %) could be overestimated in previous studies. Our study found an unexpected contribution of IVOCs from refueling procedures to both ozone and SOA formation, providing new insights into secondary pollution control policy.

Abstract
Traffic emissions are a dominant source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in urban environments. Though tailpipe exhaust has drawn extensive attention, the impact of non-tailpipe emissions on atmospheric SOA has not been well studied. Here, a closure study was performed combining urban tunnel experiments and dynamometer tests using an oxidation flow reactor in situ photo-oxidation. Results show a significant gap between field and laboratory research; the average SOA formation potential from real-world fleet is 639 ± 156 mg kg fuel-1, higher than the reconstructed result (188 mg kg fuel-1) based on dynamometer tests coupled with fleet composition inside the tunnel. Considering the minimal variation of SOA/CO in emission standards, we also reconstruct CO and find the critical role of high-emitting events in the real-world SOA burden. Different profiles of organic gases are detected inside the tunnel than tailpipe exhaust, such as more abundant C6-C9 aromatics, C11-C16 species, and benzothiazoles, denoting contributions from non-tailpipe emissions to SOA formation. Using these surrogate chemical compounds, we roughly estimate that high-emitting, evaporative emission, and asphalt-related and tire sublimation share 14, 20, and 10% of the SOA budget, respectively, partially explaining the gap between field and laboratory research. These experimental results highlight the importance of non-tailpipe emissions to atmospheric SOA.

Abstract
The air-blood partition coefficient (Kab) is extensively employed in human health risk assessment for chemical exposure. However, current Kab estimation approaches either require an extensive number of parameters or lack precision. In this study, we present two novel and parsimonious models to accurately estimate Kab values for individual neutral organic compounds, as well as their complex mixtures. The first model, termed the GC×GC model, was developed based on the retention times of nonpolar chemical analytes on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC). This model is unique in its ability to estimate the Kab values for complex mixtures of nonpolar organic chemicals. The GC×GC model successfully accounted for the Kab variance (R2 = 0.97) and demonstrated strong prediction power (RMSE = 0.31 log unit) for an independent set of nonpolar chemical analytes. Overall, the GC×GC model can be used to estimate Kab values for complex mixtures of neutral organic compounds. The second model, termed the partition model (PM), is based on two types of partition coefficients: octanol to water (Kow) and air to water (Kaw). The PM was able to effectively account for the variability in Kab data (n = 344), yielding an R2 value of 0.93 and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.34 log unit. The predictive power and explanatory performance of the PM were found to be comparable to those of the parameter-intensive Abraham solvation models (ASMs). Additionally, the PM can be integrated into the software EPI Suite, which is widely used in chemical risk assessment for initial screening. The PM provides quick and reliable estimation of Kab compared to ASMs, while the GC×GC model is uniquely suited for estimating Kab values for complex mixtures of neutral organic compounds. In summary, our study introduces two novel and parsimonious models for the accurate estimation of Kab values for both individual compounds and complex mixtures.

Abstract
Incense burning is a common practice in Asian cultures, releasing hazardous particulate organics. Inhaling incense smoke can result in adverse health effects, yet the molecular compositions of incense-burning organics have not been well investigated due to the lack of measurement of intermediate-volatility and semi-volatile organic compounds (I/SVOCs). To elucidate the detailed emission profile of incense-burning particles, we conducted a non-target measurement of organics emitted from incense combustion. Quartz filters were utilized to trap particles, and organics were analyzed by a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC × GC-MS) coupled with a thermal desorption system (TDS). To deal with the complex data obtained by GC × GC-MS, homologs are identified mainly by the combination of selected ion chromatograms (SICs) and retention indexes. SICs of 58, 60, 74, 91, and 97 were utilized to identify 2-ketones, acids, fatty acid methyl esters, fatty acid phenylmethyl esters, and alcohols, respectively. Phenolic compounds contribute the most to emission factors (EFs) among all chemical classes, taking up 24.5 % ± 6.5 % of the total EF (96.1 ± 43.1 μg g-1). These compounds are largely derived from the thermal degradation of lignin. Biomarkers like sugars (mainly levoglucosan), hopanes, and sterols are extensively detected in incense combustion fumes. Incense materials play a more important role in shaping emission profiles than incense forms. Our study provides a detailed emission profile of particulate organics emitted from incense burning across the full-volatility range, which can be used in the health risk assessments. The data processing procedure in this work could also benefit those with less experience in non-target analysis, especially GC × GC-MS data processing.

Abstract
Indoor pollutants change over time and place. Exposure to hazardous organics is associated with adverse health effects. This work sampled gaseous organics by Tenax TA tubes in two indoor rooms, i.e., an office set as samples, and the room of chassis dynamometer (RCD) set as backgrounds. Compounds are analyzed by a thermal desorption comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometer (TD-GC × GC-qMS). Four new chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) are screened in 469 organics quantified. We proposed a three-step pipeline for CECs screening utilizing GC × GC including 1) non-target scanning of organics with convincing molecular structures and quantification results, 2) statistical analysis between samples and backgrounds to extract useful information, and 3) pixel-based property estimation to evaluate the contamination potential of addressed chemicals. New CECs spotted in this work are all intermediate volatility organic compounds (IVOCs), containing mintketone, isolongifolene, β-funebrene, and (5α)-androstane. Mintketone and sesquiterpenes may be derived from the use of volatile chemical products (VCPs), while (5α)-androstane is probably human-emitted. The occurrence and contamination potential of the addressed new CECs are reported for the first time. Non-target scanning and the measurement of IVOCs are of vital importance to get a full glimpse of indoor organics.

Abstract
The human sensory irritation threshold (SIT) is an important biochemical parameter for the exposure assessment of organic air pollutants. First, we recalibrated the Abraham solvation models (ASMs) for 9 SIT endpoints by curating 720 individual experimental SIT values to find an accurate and parsimonious ASM variant, which exhibited root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.174-0.473 log unit. Second, we report linear free energy relationships - henceforth called partition models (PMs) - which exploit the correlations of 9 SIT endpoints with the linear combinations of partition coefficients for octanol-water and air-water systems showing RMSE = 0.221-0.591 log unit. These PMs can easily be integrated into widely used EPI-Suite™ screening tool. The explanatory and predictive performance of PMs were like parameter-intensive ASMs. Third, we present GC × GC models that are based on the retention times of the nonpolar analytes on the comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC), which successfully described the SIT variance (R2=0.959-0.996) and depicted a strong predictive power (RMSE = 0.359-0.660 log unit) for an independent set of nonpolar analytes. Taken together, PMs allow easy SIT screening of organic chemicals compared to ASMs. Unlike ASMs, our GC × GC models can be applied to estimate SIT of complex nonpolar mixtures.

Abstract
Ship emissions contribute substantial air pollutants when at berth. However, the complexity and diversity of the marine fuels utilized hinder our understanding and mapping of the characteristics of ship emissions. Herein, we applied GC × GC-MS to analyze the components of marine fuel oils. Owing to the high separation capacity of GC × GC-MS, 11 classes of organic compounds, including b-alkanes, alkenes, and cyclo-alkanes, which can hardly be resolved by traditional one-dimensional GC-MS, were detected. Significant differences are observed between light (-10# and 0#) and heavy (120# and 180#) fuels. Notably, -10# and 0# diesel fuels are more abundant in b-alkanes (44~49%), while in 120# and 180#, heavy fuels b-alkanes only account for 8%. Significant enhancement of naphthalene proportions is observed in heavy fuels (20%) compared to diesel fuels (2~3%). Hopanes are detected in all marine fuels and are especially abundant in heavy marine fuels. The volatility bins, one-dimensional volatility-based set (VBS), and two-dimensional VBS (volatility-polarity distributions) of marine fuel oils are investigated. Although IVOCs still take dominance (62-66%), the proportion of SVOCs in heavy marine fuels is largely enhanced, accounting for ~30% compared to 6~12% in diesel fuels. Furthermore, the SVOC/IVOC ratio could be applied to distinguish light and heavy marine fuel oils. The SVOC/IVOC ratios for -10# diesel fuel, 0# diesel fuel, 120# heavy marine fuel, and 180# heavy marine fuel are 0.085 ± 0.046, 0.168 ± 0.159, 0.504, and 0.439 ± 0.021, respectively. Our work provides detailed information on marine fuel compositions and could be further implemented in estimating organic emissions and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from marine fuel storage and evaporation processes.
