Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography using direct flow modulation to extend the secondary dimension separation time

A fast temperature-programmed second-dimension column for comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography

The short analysis time and constant temperature environment in the second dimension of two-dimensional comprehensive chromatography frequently causes wraparound problems, especially for complex high boilers. This problem can be solved by temperature programming on the second column, but since this requires heating and cooling the column in a matter of seconds, it is difficult to implement. In this study, we describe a method of accomplishing rapid heating and cooling with a resistively heated column cooled by compressed air. Critical to this method is minimizing the lag time between the actual temperature and the reported temperature by using the column heating element as the temperature sensor, virtually eliminating the danger of overshooting the temperature setpoint. This technique facilitates a ramp rate of up to 100 °C/s with minimal overshooting-well beyond the requirements of gas chromatography. A single-layer column bundle design allows a compressed-air cooling device to cool the column from 200 to 50 °C at an average rate of -21 °C/s. The secondary dimension temperature programming is facilitated by the longer secondary dimension time made possible by the direct flow modulation method. We evaluated the performance of the single-layer column bundle and demonstrated this method by applying it to a gasoline sample. We also compared this method with the traditional isothermal approach and found that use of the secondary temperature program reduced the naphthalene retention time from 12.1 to 6.3 s and its peak width at half height from 846 to 126 ms.

Influence of modulator injection width on comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography peak dimensions

This study examines how the height and width of peaks exiting the secondary column of a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) separation are affected by the width of the pulse introduced to the secondary column. A flow-modulated GC × GC apparatus was assembled that allowed input pulse widths to be controlled precisely over a range of 10 to 70 ms. GC × GC chromatograms were obtained using secondary columns containing a polyethylene glycol stationary phase with internal diameters of 0.25 and 0.32 mm. The area, height, and width of peaks emerging from the secondary column were found to be accurately modeled by the convolution of a rectangular function with a Gaussian distribution. The rectangular function represents the input pulse, and the Gaussian distribution represents the broadening that occurs in the secondary column. The minimum peak width that could be produced by the secondary column was determined for a wide range of compounds. Injection pulse widths that matched a compound's minimum peak width produced peaks that were 25% wider than the minimum width and had heights that were 76% of the maximum possible peak height. Increasing the injection width significantly above the minimum width yielded substantially broader peaks with only a modest increase (< 25%) in peak height.

Multidimensional Gas Chromatography: Benefits and Considerations for Current and Prospective Users

Two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) offers improved separation power for complex samples containing hundreds to thousands of analytes. However, several considerations must be made to determine whether multidimensional gas chromatography (MDGC) is the logical instrument choice to answer a particular scientific question, including, but not limited to, whether the analysis is targeted or non-targeted, the number of analytes of interest, and the presence of interferences that are coeluted, as well as any potential regulatory or industrial constraints. Currently, MDGC remains daunting for many users because of data complexity and the limited tools commercially available, which are critical for improving the accessibility of MDGC. Herein, we discuss considerations that may assist analysts, laboratory managers, regulatory agents, instrument and software vendors, and those interested in understanding the applicability of 2D-GC for the scientific question being investigated.
